I don't know why you don't have alot more subscribers. Your videos are entertaining, informative, meditative, and good for the soul. Thank you for continuing to post as I look forward to seeing you my friend. Much love to you and Brian.
Her voice is calming, she is extremely smart AND intelligent, lots to learn from her, articulate AND easy on the ears. Anyone would be grateful to call her friend.
You're so kind, Cheryl ❤️ Thank you!
In Lithuania this dish is called "herring in the feather-bed". We normally don't grate the vegetables but chop up them into small cubes. Thank you. 🙃
I just ate this for the first time at a restaurant called Kachka in Portland Oregon. It was so good! Now I know how to make it! Thank you ❤. Happy holidays!
Hi Paula! Wow, what a tasty coincidence 🥰 Hope you will enjoy making it! Happy holidays to you too ❄️
In my home country, and I think other Latin American countries, there's a salad made with hard-boiled eggs, potatoes and beet, everything cooked and chopped in cubes mixed with mayonnaise, it's often called "ensalada rusa" Russian salad. I always wonder why it's called like that.
I'm going to try it this weekend but with vegan mayonnaise. I love that you layer your seasonings. A lot of people don't realize how important that is when preparing a dish. Thank you for sharing the recipe. Much love to you.
I remember your Siberian cooking videos--blini and tofniki pancakes, cream of wheat with raisins and flaxseeds, veganized New Year potato salad (with vegan sausage), quick dill pickles, and Pelmeni dumplings were some of my favourites.🧡New Year blessings to you and Brian!🎇
In Finland we have similar dish called rosolli or sallatti or sillisalaatti (herring salad). I just made rosolli this morning for our Christmas meals. I boiled 8 carrots, 3 firm potatoes and 3 large beetroots in salted water. Then I peeled them and chopped them. Then I chopped some pickle (1 fermented cucumber) and 1 hard apple (Antonovka). I had to leave out onion as I can't eat it raw. I don't use any herring, most Finns haven't mixed herring in this salad for a long time now. But some still do. As a dressing we serve whipped cream with some vinegar and sugar, the cream is dyed pink with beet root juice. This salad is a traditional part of Finnish Christmas dinner. Very interesting to hear the different traditions in different places!
Hello Ana. I know this salad quite well. My parents are originally from the Ukraine, so their relatives made them in winter time. I don't remember my parents preparing it 🤔. For my taste it's too heavy, but each to their own 😊. Thank you for making the effort to prepare this salad, your version looks lovely. As always best wishes to you 🙏
Thank you, Anita! ❤️
Сельдь под шубой! 🥰 I love your cooking videos. So much aesthetic in them. I really missed them and so glad you released one of them now.
I remember a video about Russian pancakes you made, but I can't seem to find it anymore? Love your content, It often resonates with me. I use homemade mayo, made from silken tofu, , oil, pepper and salt, lemon juice, and a bit of mustard. It is so much lighter than regular mayo and it is vegan
Thank you so much for sharing this salad recipe ❤
I am Swedish and my mother used to make a similar salad with herring, eggs, beetroot and mayonnaise, I don’t remember her recipe exactly. Another version that is popular on our Christmas menue is Beetroot salad without herring, but with apple, mayonnaise, salt and pepper.
Our girls love it too. It’s also delicious with meatballs of ham. Yum 😋.
Wishing you and Brian all the best this Christmas and a very Happy new yrar ❤️🎄🎉🎇
In the Netherlands we call it 'Haringsalade', but the ingredients are mixed together. Don't think we use carrots, but can be with pickles and sour cream. But I did not eat it since my childhood, about fourty years ago. Not very common anymore. But the raw salty herring with onions is still my favo.
I am a Pole in exile : ) We also have a similar salad in Poland. It was more popular some 20-30 years ago, a little less today. I remember that when I was a child, in my house this salad was made in a beautiful crystal salad bowl so that the layers were nicely visible :) In my house it was with herring and a lot of eggs and without carrots, the rest is like yours. As for the name, it functioned as a herring salad, herring under szuba, szuba or herring under a cloud. Regards
I'm a Russian in exile. :)) You got the name right, it's called seledka pod shuboy :) As long as I can remember myself, it's been a staple dish for most holidays. To this day, I can't imagine celebrating New Year's without it. My mom also adds a bit of shredded apples to the salad, and that's my favorite take on the recipe. :) Happy holidays!
Oh, I know those big crystal bowls! My mum had a couple and they were always used for centerpieces 😊 Thank you for sharing the traditional Polish version, it's super interesting!
In Poland it's also called 'herring under duvet' (śledź pod pierzynką) with additional egg layer. Sometimes also with grated cheese on top
It looks so interesting! I've never had the salad, but I'm sure I would like it. I may give it a try. Have a great holiday 🎄🌟🥂
Thank you, you too! 🎄
What a feast for the eyes! When i can find the Nori i'm going to make this salad. Thank you. And enjoy this special season.🎄
Thank you, Helen ❤️
This salad was awesome! A friend from poland said it reminded him of his childhood so maybe it's a common dish across Europe. On the beet layer i added veg yoghurt garlic and peppermint which is a Mediterranean addition. I recommend it 😋
Aww, I'm so glad the salad was a success! I love your twist and will try it too ❤️
Hi Ana, what a beautiful jewel salad. I will definitely make it❤thank you for sharing. Take care Gale❤
The salad looks beautiful. Love your cooking video. Would like to see more of your childhood recipes.😊
We have something a bit similar in Holland that is called hussars salad, so now I realize it must have originated (roughly) in your part of the world. My mom often made this with just potatoes, beet root, raw unions, (chives sometimes) and mayo, simple and delicious
I love your 'beeting' heart.
Thank you, dear Ana! I love food videos bc one can learn so many little interesting details, e.g. I never knew that you peel a cooked carrot nor that you can grant cooked veggies ❤ Love the colours and layered style of your salad 😍😍
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video, Claudia! 😊
What a pretty dish, so colorful especially at this time of year!
Thank you for sharing Ana … a lovely recipe ❤
I will definitely make this.I shall use herring and I shall omit the onions too because I cannot stomach raw onions. Thanks for the inspiration Ana!❤
Beautiful idea ❤😊 thanks for sharing!!
I will definitely do this salad for Christmas!🎄🌟❤
This looks great Ana, thank you so much for showing us, can't wait to try it!
This salad looks delicious. I will definitely make it on Christmas day. Thank you for sharing. 😊
Happy Holidays! Good luck to you and your family from Georgia, USA
Thank you, my friend! Happy Christmas to you and to your family ❄️
I love your collar. 🌿
I know it sounds odd perhaps but i really liked your Siberian town...and snowy winter
Thank you for saying this ❤️I love my Siberian hometown and I miss it a lot.
I know this as a Ukrainian salad and its delicious. Wishing you and Brian a peaceful Christmas time.
Thank you, Lilian! ❤️
Dear Ana, thanks for the recipe, I will definitely try it. I think I will mix vegan mayo and cashew yogurt to make it lighter. I have never had seaweed before, I am very curious obout the taste.
Also, it is so lovely to see you sharing a recipe again, I remember your early videos and would love to see more. I think kitchen is a very good place to practice mindfulness and simple living, thanks for inviting us! Happy holidays.🍀
Thank you, dear Melike ❤️ I hope you will enjoy the recipe! I will try to incorporate more cooking episodes further on 😊
Thank you for the recipe! I’m going to try this and use a little Greek yogurt to replace some of the mayo. Looks so delicious! ❤
I definitely will try it. Looks yummy. The healthy beetroot, carrots and seaweed balance out the mayonnaise, so not that unhealthy. Some of the vitamins and minerals are a better absorbed with a bit of fat anyway 😊
Haha, it's a good point about fat, Val! 😊
Hey, Ana and Brian! Thanks so much for sharing your taste of home. I absolutely love seaweed snack sheets, carrots, potatoes and beets, but never thought to combine them. I'll substitute something else like oil and apple cider vinegar or a prepared raspberry or balsamic vinaigrette for the white stuff. (I'd never be successful as a Russian on that one point. lol) Beet roses? Cool skill! Happy holidays to you and yours. 💖🎄
Happy holidays to you too, Belinda! ❤️
I think the darker atmosphere in your apartment makes the video very interesting! Salad looks delicious.
Thank you for sharing a childhood memory and recipe. If I didn't live alone, I would make it with pickled herring which I love.
It was so pleasant to watch you prepare this salad. I will make some and take it to my daughter's home on Christmas. Thank you very much! Happy Christmas to you and Brian.
Enjoyed this video! Thank you!
In California we have a vegetarian version called "Fruity Beety" from the vrgetarian cookbook Laurel's Kitchen. It is a Berkeley tradition. It has no fish, though.
very pretty! it would be lovely on a banquet table.
For Christmas I’m actually also making a Russian salad with similar ingredients, but it’s Costa Rican style. Chopped carrots, potatoes, beets, onions, celery, hard boiled eggs, mayonnaise, lime juice or vinegar and some cilantro.
I'm going to make this salad on Sunday, for Christmas lunch the next day (using beets and carrots from my garden) and vegan mayo. I will be surrounded by meat eaters so it will be nice to have something different but festive to share. Thank you Ana.
Your salad really reminds me of Labskaus in north Germany, where it seems to be very popular - I know my husband and our cousin loved it. They often got a fried egg on top... Anyway, same basic ingredients!
Wait, that name? Labskovs in Danish. I thought it was a Danish dish (well to be fair the actual line (not the physical border) between Dane and German is pretty fluid.
We have very similar salad in Poland. It's called Śledz pod pierzynką which means Herring under the featherbed. I also heard the name Szuba (shub). Polish and russian dishes and languages are very close sometimes :)
It's so great to know! Thank you for sharing this 😊 Indeed, the languages have a lot in common - I can understand some Polish, also because my father had several Polish books at home.
I have a friend from Finland who makes a similar dish. I will definitely try your recipe for Christmas. Spacibo!
My favourite childhood salad. Still have it when go to visit mum un Latvia , but she is also Russian from Siberia
very interesting salad!
Beautiful video. Thanks for sharing.
I made it and I loved it!! Thanks for sharing ❤
Yay! I'm so glad you liked the salad :)
Thanks!
Thank you so much for your kind support, my friend ❤️
Thank you for sharing this tasty recipe. The salad looks very delicious, I will make it for the New Year's Eve! Beets are one of my favorite vegetables, Borshtsh is my winter staple. Ana, I don't know whether you already showed it, if not, could you cook Pelmeni at some point? I lost my mother's recipe and don't remember it properly.
Your knitted collar looks wonderful! 😍
Hope you will enjoy the recipe, Christiane ❤️ There's a video on the channel where I cook pelmeni with beans, but there are so many dough recipes available, I want to try some and come up with an improved version 😊
Yay!😊
Hi, Anna. That recipe looks delicious and it's very simple to prepare it, just as a similar salad that we have here in Brazil: instead of grating the veggies we chopp them. Ingredients: boiled potatos, carrots, eggs and some sweet corn optional, mixed with mayonnaisse. Merry Christmas for you and Brian. Feliz Natal (Brazilian Portuguese).
Lovely ,yummy food. Merry Christmas Ana! 🌲
It actually looks good even though I don't like beets!!! HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO YOU AND BRIAN From Pennsylvania, USA!!!!
Thank you, dear Susan!
I would never have guessed that mayo is a popular (and traditional?) condiment in Siberia. And being a landlocked region I wonder how seaweed became another staple?
Hi Ted, it's not a traditional "Siberian" recipe, but rather a "Soviet" recipe. Also, Siberia was a landlocked region very long time ago, then it became a connecting artery for the country with the East. I share recipes and experiences from my childhood which was in the 80's and 90's, and mayonnaise alongside with seaweed were always available and affordable 😊
this is so interesting to learn! I really enjoy hearing all this information about your homeland. @@anagoldberg
Thank you Ana, Merry Christmas to both of you!
Hi Anna - I haven’t heard of this salad before but it looks really delicious & I will definitely make a version of it but without the seaweed. Loved this video please share more recipes ❤ Happy Christmas to both of you🎄 with love from Sharon in Israel 🇮🇱 ❤
Thank you, dear Sharon ❤️ Love to you too!
Looks delicious! It looks so simple to prepare. Happy Holidays to you!
Happy holidays to you both !!!
The salad looks great and I love all ingredients so also I want to try it after Christmas. I don't know something like this recipe here in Germany. Thank you very much for sharing.
This was a fun and different video. I always love seeing recipes from other countries. Especially vegetable based recipes. So fun thank you for sharing a childhood memory. I hope you have a very Merry Christmas.❤
Very colorful! Beets are suppose to be healthy, antioxidants, vitamins, all sorts of healthies. I think iron as well! Looks yummy, Ill be there for lunch😄😅😉. Thank you for sharing this.
Always, my best, G
that looks wonderful and will probably test it out this holiday season. yum! thanks for the recipe!
this reminds me of your recipe for the beet salad; it was delicious. Thank you for sharing your family recipes. Your apartment looks so cozy! ❤
Thank you Ruthann! Yes, it was so nice to experience the festive atmosphere in that rental 🥰
Hope you have a great Christmas ana
It looks really good and I like all the ingredients. I may have to try making it
That looks delish!! I would like to wish you and your family happy holidays may they be merry and Brite! 🎄
That looks delicious! And so pretty too! I will definitely be trying.
Hi Ana, thank you! 🥰 I enjoy this and what a beautiful salad. The colors and heart are sweet too. I can't wait to try. Lastly, I think the names are fun and what others have said as similiar too, below.😋🍽👩🍳🎄💗💗
Hello Ana, I missed your cooking videos :) Thank you for lovely video, which always help me to keep calm and happy. Have great Xmas !!! xxx
Sounds delicious! There are homemade mayonnaise options that are healthy :) My favourite mayonnaise is actually vegan, tastes even better than the conventional one!
Ps: lovely haircut / outfit :)
Thank you 😊
I cannot eat raw onions either so I'm glad you can omit them. I'm not fond of beets but I would try this salad. Thank you for sharing this recipe. I would like more cooking videos if you are able to do them.
💓💓💓
Mmmm, this salad looks absolutely yummy and I shall definitely give it a try over Christmas. I think I might omit the seaweed though as I’m not a huge fan of it. Have a lovely Christmas Anna and Brian and thank you as always for your channel and the videos xx
Love this salad but too lazy to cook )) It always makes me think of a “where do i buy pink mayonnaise?” joke about Shuba salad 😅
Hi Ana, the salad looks beautiful and festive. I would like to try it and may make it one day this winter. Your Christmas 🎄in the background is gorgeous with the twinkling lights. Just what we need on dark days. A very Merry Christmas to you and Bryan. 🎉
Thank you, dear friend! ❤️
😊😊
I will definitely make this salad! I make tofu mayo all the time, as vegan. Just put drained mori nu silken tofu (probably hard to get near you), 2 Tbp lemon juice, one teaspon caper juice, one tsp dijon mustard in a wide mouth deep jar. I use a quart mason jar. Then I blend till smooth with my stick blender. Its pretty good substitute.
It's a great mayo recipe, thanks!
Love suba it my favorite
It’s not 31
But I’m after 3 suba salats , every weekend 1
My version
Herring with onions
Appel
Potato
Carrot
Beet root
Eggs
End big portions of homemade mayonnaise
Happy holidays
Ana, I think I remember when you made this same salad in a video a couple years ago? Except the vegetables were cubed. I was worried about your back watching you bend over that table! I hope your back is ok. 😅 For some reason I have it in my mind that you have hypermobility, maybe because I have it myself and I see something in your hands that reminds me of my own hands. Anyway I have always enjoyed the food videos you have done in the past, it was fun to go back to the classic Siberian theme of your channel!
Haha, I had to watch my back a lot but it was fine, no painful accidents 😊 i do have some hypermobility issues, you're right to notice it, my friend. Two years I made a recipe video with Olivier (a.k.a. Russian Salad), the veggies were cubed and there was no beets there 😉
Oh, we have something similar in Denmark, but it is literally called "Russian Salad", so it is clear where we have it from. We mix the ingredients rather then layer them. The we make smørrebrød with ryebread, herring, and this salad on top.
I don't like it, unfortunately. There are only two things I really don't like now as an adult, and it is mayonnaise and creme fraiche.
Oh, Brian also knows a similar salad under the name of "Russian Salad", and we actually saw it in grocery stores in Serbia and Romania as well 😊
Селедка под шубой! 😍 Now I think I will not be able to resist and will also make one, along with Olivier for this New Year. My Italian husband will be trying it for the first time so I guess it's going to be that 'love or hate" thing you mentioned :) haha :) How about Brian? Did he love that salad? 😋
Haha, Brian is not a fan of it (and of Vinegret either) 😊 He adores Olivier though. Hope your husband will love it!
Welcome to Romania ! I can't belive you are here ! How long are you staying here ? ❤
We actually arrived in late September:)
Hi Ana, that looks so tasty! But Im not sure if I would like the seaweed. What is the traditional ingredient used instead of the seaweed? Thanks for another lovely video! 🤗
If you eat fish, you can use herring or salmon. But if you want, you can omit the "sea" ingredients and just follow the recipe without them:)
@@anagoldberg Thank you! 🤗
Sounds good. Just wondering what type of potato is best? Yellow, red? I think i will try it with tuna.
Choose pptatoes that hold their shape well, I used yellow potatoes but red can also be good. Just make sure to cool them completely before peeling and grating. Hope this helps!
The 'L' in 'salmon' is silent. It's pronounced 'sammon' 😊 I think I will make this. It looks good 😊
👩🍳 ❤
the seaweed appears to be Nori seaweed. in a previous video you pictured a pair of boots that you didn't like wearing in your youth. can you please tell me what they are called.
Yes, it's Nori seaweed. The boots are called 'valenki'.
I’ve had a hard time finding a good plant based mayonnaise - if someone in the US has a recommendation let me know
Beautiful salad ❤ Ana
In the US, Veganaise (I think that’s the right spelling) is good. I’m not vegan but prefer it over regular mayo.
Did i miss the herring or did you not use it?
I used seaweed instead of herring.
Beet soup iti traditional in Russia?
