    Ok allow me to go on a little tangent here because this one has been worded pretty weirdly and is sort of incorrect. Tampons weren't originally made to plug up bullet holes in WW1, but nurses in WW1 made tampons out of the absorbent bandages they would use to cover up wounds, when they weren't being used on the soldiers. The first tampon (the ones we know today) were made in 1929, with WW1 ending in 1918. So the op wasn't technically all that wrong, they just sorta jumped to conclusions. I'm guessing they either got the info from an incorrect source or just decided to make it sound more interesting.
    That being said, makeshift tampons have been discovered going back to the Egyptians, apparently it was made from the papyrus plant. The Romans used wool, and the Greeks supposedly wrapped lint around wood according to Hippocrates (I haven't fact-checked that last one, so take it with a pinch of salt). The Japanese used paper but there isn't a lot of factual evidence surrounding that, so it may be fake or altered slightly.
    Also that Caesar calendar one is completely wrong too, but other people have explained why so just scroll down to see it.

Although it was just a fun fact sort of thing, since Lincoln was our tallest president and 6'4" was pretty tall back in the 1800's, that's probably why it's a well known fact.

    0:54 Incorrect. In 44 b.c. Marcus Antonius re-named the 5th and 6th month of the year after Julius Caesar and his adoptive nephew Octavianus Augustus. He did not "add" the two months because the Juilian Calendar considered March as the first month of the year; so, counting from March, we have September, October, November and December as the actual 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th month of the year. No adding random months to the calendar guys, it ruins the harvest ;)

      Vendémiaire, Brumaire, Frimaire, Nivôse, Pluvôse, Ventôse, Germinal, Floréal, Prairial, Messidor, Thermidor, Fructidor.
      The 10 days of the week went like this:

    Another more intersting thing, back a few years, Morocco "invaded" a spanish rock off the coast with 8 spec ops units. Spain sent in a helicopter and arrested the 8 soldiers as POWs.
    Morroco had the Arab league backing it, and Spain had NATO. boi we were gonna have a mediterrainian war over a small rock off the coast.

A yankee doodle was a buffoon colonist, I believe, in the eyes of the British, and the "macaroni" thing was like saying "I'm decorating my tri-cornered hat to make it look dope!" The British had several songs made to mock the colonists and Patriots, which the Patriots then just embraced and used themselves, even changing the lyrics a bit to be more relevant to them. Yankee Doodle was probably the most popular of these types of songs.

      Galileo tho

    • @robertstegmann9260
      @robertstegmann9260 4 года назад +1

      @@nothankyou4432 The Galileo affair is complex. The prevailing idea at the time was Geocentrisisim. One of the big factors in this was that, if the Earth was really moving, you would be able to observe a Stellar parallax. However, stellar parallax was not obeserved until 1806. This is becuase stars are so far away the parallax is very small. Nobody knew that however, and instead of assuming the stars were so far away, the simpler solution was that the Earth was stationary and at the centre of the universe. This arguement was not something Galileo was able to disprove, which made people skeptical. There was scripture that, interpretted literally, would support the geocentric model. Although it would not be impossible to change the intereptation of scripture so that it does not conflict with scientific thought, Church officials like Cardinal Robert Bellarmine felt Galileo had insufficent evidence to establish the Heliocentrism as physical fact. Therefore the Church did not have a problem with people placing the Sun in the centre of the universe for hypothetical calculations, but instead had a problem with advocating the heliocentric model as a real phenomenon. Additionally, Francesco Ingoli wrote an essay disputing the Copernican system, which contained physical and mathematical arguements as well as theological. Now to the trials. There were actually two trials. The first one, in 1616, condemned heliocentrism and ordered Galileo to "to abstain completely from teaching or defending this doctrine and opinion or from discussing it... to abandon completely... the opinion that the sun stands still at the center of the world and the earth moves, and henceforth not to hold, teach, or defend it in any way whatever, either orally or in writing." Galileo accepted this and recieved no other punishments. Fast forward to 1623, when Pope Gregory XV died and was succeeded by Pope Urban VIII, who was an admirer and friend of Galileo. Pope Urban VIII, although a believer of the geocentric model, allowed Galileo to write a book about the two systems, as long as Galileo did not take a side. So Galileo wrote his book
      Galileo's Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, which was published in 1632 to great popularity, was an account of conversations between a Copernican scientist, Salviati, an impartial and witty scholar named Sagredo, and a ponderous Aristotelian named Simplicio, who employed stock arguments in support of geocentricity, and was depicted in the book as being an intellectually inept fool. Simplicio's arguments are systematically refuted and ridiculed by the other two characters with what Youngson calls "unassailable proof" for the Copernican theory (at least versus the theory of Ptolemy - as Finocchiaro points out, "the Copernican and Tychonic systems were observationally equivalent and the available evidence could be explained equally well by either"), which reduces Simplicio to baffled rage, and makes the author's position unambiguous. Indeed, although Galileo states in the preface of his book that the character is named after a famous Aristotelian philosopher (Simplicius in Latin, Simplicio in Italian), the name "Simplicio" in Italian also had the connotation of "simpleton." Authors Langford and Stillman Drake asserted that Simplicio was modeled on philosophers Lodovico delle Colombe and Cesare Cremonini. Pope Urban demanded that his own arguments be included in the book. which resulted in Galileo putting them in the mouth of Simplicio.
      The Pope, understandably, took this as an insult. Galileo lost the support of the Pope and the Jesuits, and a second trial occured in 1633. It decided that Galileo's book was proof that he had not abandoned the heliocentric model and was placed under house arrest.

    I always assumed Tumblr's view of history was "Straight White Men ruled all two nations of the world, America and Europe, and enslaved and oppressed women, black people, lesbians and other less important people all the way up until (insert current year), when they finally broke free of their shackles and gained equal rights but somehow also didn't gain any rights at the same time".
    In all seriousness, this was super funny and I really did manage to learn a thing or two from some of these posts!

    The Julius Caesar thing is so wrong though. Octavian didn't change his name to Augustus until after Caesar died first of all, and second it was January and February that were added. Then the gregorian calendar moved January to the beginning of the year to make more thematic sense. June and July replaced Quinius and Sixtus, the 5th and 6th named months

      Knowing tumblr and their love for poetry, Emily Dickenson.
      Sappho and Patricia Highsmith are also often mentioned.

      Or Virginia Wolf

    • @hunterkoons2008
      @hunterkoons2008 6 лет назад +3

      @@celinak5062 Well, it spacifically referres to two women, so the gay/bi dudes are out. Emily lived alone, Patricia was openly gay so no historian could deny that, and Virginia stated in letters her only reason for marrying her husband was his energy (she otherwise hated him because he was jewish) and she wasnt forced into it (she was very athiest too. Openly hated the church so if she was gay she wouldn't have religious or societal reasons to hide it, since she wouldn't care what they'd think). Sappho might be the best candidate, since a lot of her works are lesbian-based (though it may have been just an artistic fixation) but things involving her personal life were vague, with nothing pointing to her raising kids with another woman, and she didn't openly have any partners in any documents or works to raise those kids with (it was ancient greece so they were more than ok with it). Thanks for that though. I had fun researching who they were to try and figure that out.

    • @skulllatte3352

      Yeah I mean with what's going on at the moment and with what history has taught us, it's pretty obvious that not all of us Brits are in their right mind.
      Just thought I should say though, Thunder-snow is a real thing and while albeit is rare (because it can only take place in a few certain months in the year) can happen because of conflicting warm and cold air currents, so they weren't wrong for predicting that might actually happen (although it didn't). I must admit that the name isn't the best choice though, it does sound like someone's making it up.
