The McLaren F1 is considered by most to be the first hypercar ever. When McLaren and its lead designer, Gordon Murray, released it back in 1992 it shocked the automotive world with it unique design and race inspired functionality. The McLaren F1 was full of firsts, it used carbon fiber, space grade metals, it had a Formula One derived engine by BMW, and it had three seats! Three seats in a hypercar! And those are only a few of the incredible engineering features in the McLaren F1. Today we are going B2B on the car that managed to hold on to the title of fastest car in the world for TWELVE straight years, the McLaren F1.

Gordon and McLaren was a match made in heaven. I was 12 years old when the F1 came out. I had posters of it everywhere and grew up with it, watched every video about it, read all the car magazines about it. One of those cars that is just awesome but I'd never get to see on in real life. Fast forward to when I am around 37 and when we went to LA, decided to go to the Petersen car museum. Little did I know there would be a silver Mclaren F1 on the one floor. My wife wasn't understanding why I was tearing up looking at the car for 30 minutes not saying a word... She just didn't get it. Veyrons are cool and so are all the other hyper cars but honestly this has a place in my heart. For being 20+ years old, it STILL looks awesome. I'd like to hear one in real life one day so perhaps that's another story. But being inches away from a real Mclaren F1 is still something that I cheese about when I think about it.

Inconal is used on The Rolls Royce K17 and K34 gas turbine engines that I work on in the Navy. It's used as liner for the power turbine (PT) section right after the combustor section where the exhaust gases reach extreme heat.
Fun fact: The ecu modem was modern and forward looking at the time but nowadays the F1 can only communicate through the modem to an old Macintosh computer that has gone out of production.

This makes me miss Need for Speed Hot Pursuit II.
Using the F1LM NFS Edition, clipped a spike strip with the left side tires.
The car spun a 1260° in a second. Best moment ever.
That makes me want to try it out
Would really cool if McLaren produced improved replicas of this same car some day, like Jaguar did for their vintage whatever car
we need that BMW V12 too
One of the best BMW engine ever made !
Agreed but it was still McLaren who designed and specified it, back then they didn't have the money to build and tool a new factory for a limited run car
I think Honda was their first choice for tooling reasons to adapt an existing block
@@Michael.Talbot I am not sure about that. Paul Rosche was part of the project and he was the head engineer for race engines at bmw at that time. I guess that he was the head engineer for this engine too. BMW already started to develop the engine before mclaren ask for one and noticed that it will fit perfectly. Thats what i know. I don´t think that mclaren was designing the engine.
Can we see a past Gas show on the future of Hypercars, for the track (ultima RS, Aston valkyrie, amg one etc, czinger 21c), top speed (Hennessey f5, Jesko, Chiron super sport etc), and acceleration (pininfarina, lotus, rimac). Would be cool

I love how he always assumes that they won’t use a clip, and then it gets used.
That 14k modems pretty cool.
It comes with a sat transceiver so McLaren can diagnose the engine from England to anywhere in the world.

The McLaren F1 is _truly_ a race car for the road.
For real, no marketing bumf.
The tyres are _still_ $20,000 a set.
Because you have to hire a race track, test driver, engineers and ambulance to set up new tyres.

Because half the parts have a shelf life even if you don't use them.

I got the chance to seat in an F1 while in Malibu when Jay Leno himself went to ride the snake, he showed alot of us the car and opened it all up, at the time I had no real idea what it even was, wicked cool and the 2 side seats are really small btw, the tool bag of tools that it comes with are also super super light weight, and he's 100% correct about the engine bay having all that gold, it is really something to behold in person! Another interesting fact about the development of the F1 is that, even though Gordon Murray had tested all the supercars available at the time as a reference for the Mclaren's design, it was the Honda NSX the car that set their standards and targets in terms of handling, ride quality and setup. Which, not only says a lot about the engineering of the Honda, but also it says a lot about why the F1 had such success at asserting itself as the ultimate road car: it's goal was clear from the start, and every inch of the car was thought to achieve that objective in the most efficient way. The fact that this car holds relevance after almost 30 years serves as proof, as no other "hypercar" has been able to be as practical for daily use and effective on track as the F1. What Murray is doing with the T50 is just an update of a concept he developed 30 years ago.
And that's on that.
its so nice they gave that shout out at the end :)
