I saw Kate Bush live (twice) in London and the concert was like Rockets Tail, but times 10! She roared like a Goddess. The drummer and percussionist were phenomenal. Everything was phenomenal. Kate Bush is a true genius, and we can thank Dave for helping her get a break as a kid. It was a moment where God had to intervene to release this incredible talent to us, because no one would sign her. Fancy that, no one would sign her. And then EMI tried to control her (like all production companies) so she gave them the finger and created her own studio and her works of art in her own time. Absolute legend.

Personally, I think this is one of Kate's best tracks. It has so much much. The acapela vocal element, the eastern European folk element, the blend between them both, the hard tack away and into electric solo, the drums... wow, hard hitting, and that Kate allows the instruments to have their moment, not just a singular solo electric guitar moment.
Kate isnt afraid to let the instruments shine. She isnt afraid to do that.
Kudos to you, your review smacked.

The first time I heard this song, oof, there was a lot going on in my life, and I just latched on to every layer of this song: the opening lyrics, which were so meaningful to me at the time, that rock 'n' roll aggression, the harmonies, Kate's vocals, which were kind of something we'd not heard from her before - she was on another level with this song. This song, in the annals of Kate Bush, is one of her masterpieces.

This is one of the best reviews you've done. It gave me more to think about Kate Bush. Since the album is very poetically about sensual relationships it's always struck me as two fierce personalities sharing the sky together at night that invokes the uniqueness of those two people's individuality experiencing the same propelling journey both similarly and differently and the resolution remaining bright, but excitedly uncertain. I capitulate to Kate's brilliance and her cat.

In Britain when somebody says "rocket", we generally think of a firework.Especially when kate says "November night". That's referring to Nov 5, a night we in UK commemorate with bonfires and fireworks. You can I think almost feel the massive rush of soaring high into the nights sky and exploding into a great ball of dazzelling lights. Then for the stick (tail) of the rocket failing back down to earth on its own unseen. A metaphor for yes, just living an exhilarating experience that you previously thought somebody else was crazy for wishing. Be the rocket, Be the firework.

Another great reaction Justin! No wonder as "Rocket's Tail" is, for me, one of Kate Bush's most powerful songs in her full discography. When "The Sensual World" was released, the first time I listened to it, I felt soooooo disapointed (I still think it's one of her 2 "weakest" albums with "The Red Shoes") until that song came along. And I felt "Rocket's Tail" really was THE track which made the whole album worth it (I also love "TSW" and "The Fog" now). A great great song!
If you want to know more about Kate's collaboration with Bulgarka, you should watch this short (about 5 mns) documentary about it in which you see her recording "Rocket's Tail", talking about their work (she's so gorgeous in this interview!) and learning to sing bulgarian vocal technique. It's really interresting! Here's the link:

This song came out just after my boyfriend died in 1990. He was very much a dreamer, and I connected it to loss, to viewing the soul of this friend streaking across the night sky like a rocket. It has been many years now, and I still get emotional when I hear this song.

@JustJP thank you. I have been listening to the song and it does seem to have the gravitas of a dirge, especially at beginning. The unique tonal quality of the Bulgark Singers underscores it. Plus the reference to the friend who is no longer present when she shoots into the night " HOME to the quickening ground/ with no one to catch it"
But it seems like Kate Bush was dealing with a private loss.

@JustJP her guitarist and close friend Alan Murphy died in 1989 from complications from AIDS/HIV. He was her guitarist on her cover of Rocket Man. In a later performance, she set an empty chair on stage in memory of him. He was born November 1953 (that November night). In 1989, there were no reliable treatments for HIV, so he had probably been ill for a long while. Back in 1989, there was a long way to go regarding gay rights and a certain amount of stigma .
Mostly, I think Kate Bush was very private about her grief. He obviously meant a lot to her.
I found this at Kate Bush Encyclopedia website.

Hi JustJP, Love all your Kate videos! Have just been bingewatching them. As for the 'meaning' of this one, it helps not to thinks of rockets as in space travel, but rockets as in fireworks. The November night refers to Guy Fawkes Night on the fifth of November, which is the UK's traditional bonfire and fireworks night. So the other person enjoys the fireworks: the brilliance of the flash which only lasts a few seconds, whereas Kate in the beginning only sees a fleeting moment which is over too soon leaving only a smoky trail. Until she steps into the other person's imagination and becomes a rocket herself, enjoying the excitement of the moment with one big bang. Brilliant!

That November night, looking up into the sky
You said, "Hey, wish that was me up there
It's the biggest rocket I could find
And it's holding the night in its arms
    If only for a moment
I can't see the look in its eyes
But I'm sure it must be laughing
But it seemed to me the saddest thing I'd ever seen
And I thought you were crazy, wishing such a thing
I saw only a stick on fire
    Alone on its journey
    Home to the quickening ground
With no one there to catch it
I put on my pointed hat
And my black and silver suit
And I check my gunpowder pack
And I strap the stick on my back
And, dressed as a rocket on Waterloo Bridge
    Nobody seems to see me
Then, with the fuse in my hand
And now shooting into the night
    And still as a rocket
    I land in the river
Was it me said you were crazy?
I put on my cloudiest suit
    Size five lightning boots, too
    'Cause I am a rocket
    On fire
Look at me go, with my tail on fire
    With my tail on fire
    On fire
Hey, look at me go, look at me...

To me this is a very Katey song, no one else could have come up with this. The next song "This Woman's Work", was the last song on the LP, but the CD release had another song "Walk Straight Down the Middle" which Kate wanted on the album but couldn't fit on the vinyl. As to your question, no this isn't the peak, the next song is one of the greatest songs ever written, by anyone, not just Kate.

November the 5th is Guy Fawkes night. Night of fireworks to commemorate the failed gun powder plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605 and the execution of Guy Fawkes. The aftermath of the plot has the first recorded shoot out, between the plotters and the English army.

So nice to enjoy Kate along with you.....Thanks .....and just because a memory jog.... sticking in a recommendation for Tommy Bolin - "Dreamer" is a good start.... or if you prefer.....his work on Billy Cobham's "Spectrum" (or with James Gang -replaced Joe Walsh...or Deep Purple "Come Taste The Band" album-replaced Richie Blackmore) (the kid wasn't called upon for no reason....... he deserves to be remembered.)

"This Woman's Work" was in the soundtrack of a Kevin Bacon movie, in the late 80s. His character's marriage is on the rocks and toward the end, she lies dying in hospital due to a problematic pregnancy. That's when Kate's song comes in.

For another Gilmour-Bush collaboration, you need to listen to The Game (Part II) which I think has been recommended before. It's actually from a Roy Harper album, but features all three of them.

Martin Rixx Actually, he does not. On "The Kick Inside" electric guitars featured Ian Bairnson and Paul Keogh with David Paton on acoustic guitar and bass. Dave's first contribution was backing vocal for "Pulling Out The Pin" on Kate's 4th album "The Dreaming"

November 5th is Guy Fawkes night or bonfire night in the UK ("remember remember the 5th of November"), and the initial imagery is meant to be watching a firework shooting up into the sky, and two people's different views of the same thing. Then the second part, to me, is so powerfully sad: Kate dressing as a rocket (I always imagine something like the 1940's Rocketman serial) and jumping off Waterloo Bridge (in London) and hitting the water below, presumably a suicide attempt? And at the same time, the music is spiralling higher and faster as she images herself flying through the night sky. Haven't we all be saying how good this track is all along?

Huge fan of Kate Bush's work. A trendsetting musical genius that redefined/influenced the art form of modern music through her creativity, experimentation, and passion. Love when you react to Kate's music JP! 🔥There is still a ways to go in Kate's discography but I assure you that the journey is well worth it 😁👍

Perfect, articulate, precise and outstanding, and thats just your review mate. Delighted you got as much out of that song as many of us Kate fans hoped you would (I very sadly fist pumped the air at the use of the word 'awesome' ha ha). The next track, oh man, ...for me, if the chaotic vocal brilliance of Rocket's tail is Everest, then the fragile and haunting beauty of her vocals in 'This Womans Work' will see you momentarily looking out from Olympus Mons or it may take you as it did me to the depths of the deepest abyss your soul will be found in and sooth you to tears, if you'll allow it to. I suspect, just suspect, that any resistence will be futile and that your total capitulation will ensue. And its not even her best song in my opinion, 'Among Angels' and 'A Coral Room' will take you higher and deeper still...oh you lucky so and so, wish I could start that journey of discovery again. Your reviews are the closest I will get. God bless bud.

Kate is always good ..... another reminder .. Sweet Thing / Candidate / sweet thing by Bowie ..... I will say this ... you have listened to many songs where the singer really shows emotion .... Kate being one of them ...... if you made a list I think sweet thing would be at the top of the list ....... you listened to Diamond Dogs, which described a dystopian society ..... well, sweet thing gets more first person, David playing the part of a person trying to survive in this dystopian realm by what ever means needed

Hi Justin. I know everyone values you for your intelligent breakdown of songs but that reaction was fantastic. The song may have been inspired by her cat but the Rocket in question is a firework. In Britain on Nov. 5th we have Bonfire night where we celebrate the saving of parliament from the gunpowder plot by lighting bonfires and setting off of fireworks. Its an all ŕound fun celebration filled with warmth and cheer just when things are getting cold. I love this song but I'd say you've got 2 more to go. Don't forget Walk Straight Down the Middle. It's not on the original vinyl but it's been on every digital copy since. I believe most people would want you to include it. Don't know if there's been a Kate Pink Floyd collab except the odd live performance with Dave Gilmour but there has been a Kate Bush Peter Gabriel collaboration. Is that one in your archives somewhere ?. Thanks Justin see you for the next one :)

It seems maybe you weren't clear about Kate's lyrics for this song. If you'd like insight as to what this song is about, Kate said in an interview in 1989 (and I'm paraphrasing here), that it's about someone with a seemingly unrealistic dream (wanting to be a rocket, so they can soar into the night sky) and the person who is in love with him, judging this dream as impossible (seemed the saddest thing I'd ever seen). It's why she sees "only a stick on fire, alone on it's journey to the quickening ground". She's certain this dream will fail. But then, because of her love for this person, and not wanting him to fail on his own, she gets swept up in this ridiculous dream, and before she knows it she's strapping her own rocket to her back, and she has a moment of "whoa, was it me, who said you were crazy?" as she also comes crashing back to earth. So...it's basically about someone who's clarity of vision gets clouded by their love, and they get dragged along into their lover's delusions of grandeur, and in the end they also become deluded because of the love intoxicating they experience. It's a wee bit grim...but Kate can be that way sometimes.

I always felt the Trio Bulgarka was trying to drown out Kate, I'd prefer her vocals a little higher in the mix.
Hopefully you'll get to her Christmas single from 1980 in the next 2 weeks, 'December Will Be Magic Again'. The b-side is 'Warm and Soothing'. These can be found on her anthology box set "This Woman's Work: Anthology 1978-1990". I already had all of the studio albums but bought it to get the 2 discs full of non-album tracks.
