Man, "The Dreaming" is such an interesting album. I'm listening to it again for the second time in a month and wow...
Welcome to the Kate Bush fanclub :-) The Dreaming was way too far ahead of it's time and not really appreciated at the time it was released. The Gothenburg Symphony recognized Kate Bush as one of the most important living visionaries in rock music and dedicated an entire concert to her, you can watch it on vimeo vimeo.com/269167293
Would have loved to see a first time reaction to the scream in Houdini. Or any of the bonkers moments on that album, such a great work of art.
It was the first one she produced herself. Great album. Even as a long time fan, might favourite might be the comeback album, Aerial. Quite a feat for an artist.

Yes! The Dreaming is still a very good album, It never gets old.
Yes, her voice is ridiculously high and over the top and yes, it's one of the best things the human ear can experience.

She wrote a song when she was 15 called the man with the child in his eyes. A very wise song from such a young girl.
I think that song is one of my personal favs. Along with her "Gaelic" song. Kate singing in Gaelic is...well...transcendental.
She was much younger as that was her first composition. She actually wrote Wuthering Heights at 13 and composed the music by 15 with her brother.
All of her videos are exceptional, as well.

I have to correct you here, Kate started writing songs seriously at the age of 13, but Wuthering Heights was written 5 years later.
I was very young when I first heard her and I thought she sounded like a witchy angel banshee. I was mesmerised by her voice and her beauty and her dancing. About 40 years later and I am a huge fan of hers still. She is unique and I love that she is so inspired by art and literature.

When I first heard her voice it was her debut on 'Top of the Pops' with this song.
I was just leaving the house but immediately closed the door and returned inside.
Kate Bush bewitched me that night. 45 years later I still haven't woken-up.
And hope I never will.

The novel "Wuthering Heights" was the only one written by Emily Bronte, a great book that I've read multiple times. What you don't realize is that when Cathy is saying she wants to come in the window is that she's a ghost, haunting Heathcliff.
I've loved Kate Bush since seeing her on SNL back in 1978 where she sang 2 other songs from the same album. Didn't care for her mime-choreography, it always seemed a bit silly. This song I tired of over the years, too repetitive, she did so much better work later. 'Dreaming' is a brilliant track, 'Cloudbusting' too. "Hounds of Love" is probably her peak album, several hit singles on the A side and the music suite The Ninth Wave on the B side (a must-listen).

I understand exactly what you mean but I guess the arrangement is not entirely her own. The third chorus and the fuzz guitar playing the same melody at the end is a bit too much, but the song is still one of my favorites.
It is a... unique dance style, but Look up videos for "Wuthering Heights Day." People all over the world get together in crowds to follow her dance routine.
We've ALL wanted to get into Kate Bush for the longest time.

In the UK, when this came out, as a 9 year old boy I was aware that adults regarded her as a screeching banshee - and everyone under thirty fell in love with her instantly. It was such a fresh sound and also, she wrote and creatively controlled her music and videos! The record label wanted The Wedding List as her first single but she said No! Wuthering Heights will go to number one. And gee wiz, it did! That just wasn't done here back then. I knew from that album onward that this woman was going to inspire me so I listened VERY closely. And what would we do without people like Kate Bush in the word? My favorite songs of hers are Under the Ivy and Lord of the Reedy River - both B sides and musical creativity at it's best.
I was a child when this came out. First hearing her, it got my attention like a beacon, and I am sure I thought like everyone else WTF, and then I was mesmerized forever.

Kate Bush is truly unique. She's so different that on her debut even the punk bands of the era took notice; Johnny Rotten became one of her biggest fans :-). She got a record deal thanks to David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, who was a family friend. They worked together a few times as well, for example on the song Love and Anger. Other great songs I highly recommend: Hounds Of Love, Running Up That Hill, Cloudbusting, This Woman's Work, Moments Of Pleasure, The Big Sky, The Man With The Child In His Eyes, Don't Give Up (with Peter Gabriel).
Some of the artist that admire or got influenced by her music include, Big Boi from Outkast, James Hatfield from Matallica, Tupac Shakur (yes he too his favourite song was Running Up That Hill), Ellie Goulding, Annie, Lennox, Florence Welch, Damon Albarn from Blur, Regina Spektor, Beck, Stevie Nicks, Lorde, Paula Cole, Rosalia and Chris Martin from Coldplay (Yup Coldplay took inspiration from Running Up That Hill to create their song Speed of Sound and Fix You). 🙂
She performed Comfortably Numb with David Gilmour in the early 2000s once, when she had pretty much disappeared. There’s a fan video of it here on RUclips.

When I was a teenager in the 70s, Zeppelin, Floyd, Bowie, Elton, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac. Rock, Disco, Motown, Punk and in this era my thoughts were, "What the hell is this?" Followed her career ever since.

“Don’t Give Up” is a great duet between her and Peter Gabriel. Peter chose her for that song because of the tender loving motherly quality of her voice and it works in that way. That song is also a totally different side to Gabriel than you heard from Security. Definitely worth a listen.
Forgot to add that I like this song. Never heard it before but it has an interesting chord progression in the chorus. Also not sure what the beat is but i don’t think it’s straight 4/4. Her voice also caught me off guard but I ended up liking it.

it is Catherine ( Heathcliff lover's ) who died giving birth to Cathy ; and the song is ( for me ) about Mr Lockwood, the new tenant at Thrushcross Grang , snowed in for the night at Wuthering Heights , who had a nightmare in which a ghostly Catherine begs to enter through the window .

She sings backup on Peter Gabriel's "Games Without Frontiers" and duets with Gabriel on "Don't Give Up".
I've been listening to this track for long about 30 years and it doesn't get old. Totally enchanting and haunting performance by Kate. And that guitar solo at the end by Ian Bairnson of Alan Parsons fame... knocks it out of the park
She wrote a couple of songs on the album at 13.
Kate has an incredible 4 octave voice, and she obviously used the upper ranges of her vocal abilities on this song to portray the ghost of Catherine coming back from death to haunt her true love Heathcliff. Kate did a lot of vocal gymnastics on her first 3 albums with swooping back and forth from lows to highs. From the Dreaming album onward her voice became more sensual and she used her middle ranges more. Her current mature voice (from Aerial through 50 Words For Snow and her 2016 live Before The Dawn release) is incredibly rich, strong, and soulful. One of the most beautiful voices of all time.
There is a LOT of nuance in this song. Her voice is actually not quite as high-pitched as it sounds. She is purposefully singing and holding her voice near the point at which it would crack, in order to give it a somewhat strained, shrieking quality. Not unlike how you might imagine a ghost would sing, and the character she is singing as is indeed a ghost. Also, the music has a great deal of key changes, and large parts of the song don't really have a definite key. This again is to symbolize Catherine being stuck in the spirit world, while trying to get back to Wuthering Heights. The music goes back and forth, forms a key, falls apart again, as Cathy tries to go home and fails again.

The first time we saw her was on Saturday Night Live in a gold unitard, sitting on a grand piano, and dance/gesturing along with exaggerated expressions. My friends and I all looked at each other in awe and said, "WHO is THAT?????" Soooooo different and theatrical (we were all theatre students, so...you can imagine the impact she had on us.) She's very young in this song. It's her first album, and like Joni Mitchell, her voice deepened, although not as much as chain-smoking Joni. Please try Running Up That Hill, Wow, and Babooshka (all official videos)! ~ Joni is the Sun and Kate is the Moon ~

Kate has used her voice as one of the instruments in her songs right from the start. She puts lots of thought into how she wants it to sound, to complement the lyrics, the tone and overall musical ensemble of each track.
She's amazing. I've heard her music my entire life, so I don't know what it's like to hear her very unique style and sound for the first time having not experienced anything quite like it. It's a lot to take in, I imagine.
I heard this song, my first Kate Bush. when I was 10 and I was blown away by her voice. I listened to the whole album and fell in love with. She has been a big part of my life ever since.
She recorded it at 18/19 but she wrote it at 16/17.

A novel written by Emily Bronte in the late 1800's, Wuthering Heights. Several movies made if u dont want to read the novel, watching the movie will give u an ideal about what this is about. It is a classic novel. Beautiful

Chills! I love this song so much. So ghostly and lovely.
I loved her voice. Kate plays the role of Cathy's ghost, appearing at Heathcliffe's window. Her voice is meant to be emotional, near-hysterical, screaming and haunting, so the high-pitched vocal is perfect for this. Kate pretty much invented a whole new genre of literary, mystical music, and influenced artists like Tori Amos, Toni Halliday of Curve and Lana Del Rey.
It was years ago when I first heard Kate Bush's incredible voice. And it was the song Wuthering Heights. I was almost in shock while listening and after a few listens because I'd never heard anything like her or the song before. I couldn't really make out the lyrics and I hadn't heard much about her or this song at the time, so it caught me off guard, but in a good way. You know that feeling when you've first seen or heard or experienced artistic genius and it's like nothing you've experienced before? It was very much that. It makes you feel like you've been reborn in a way because there's been nothing like her song experience that you've felt before. As much as I was stunned, I was enthralled, enraptured by her voice and the song and the story of it, the journey it took me on, and I became obsessed not only by this song, but many of her songs, and I've listened to them all countless times over. I couldn't get enough of them. And I haven't stopped being a devotee of her and her music. You just never know where her songs are going vocally, lyrically, musically or narratively. That is true genius. Kate Bush is an artist and a brilliant songwriter, vocalist, producer, director, musician, storyteller... and I'll listen to her music and watch her videos all the rest of my days. Just wish I could've seen her perform live, but I doubt she will again, sad to say.
My dad had a total crush on Kate Bush. I grew up with not only this album, but a laser disc of an early live performance. Kate Bush was a true part of my childhood, but only in my own house. She seemed so obscure in the rest of my world. It's always nice to see people appreciate her.
The best of the best. Just wish she would release more. As for more live performances ..........

The string arrangements on this particular song are out of this world. Great solo at the end too, 1978 was such a great year of music. On the same vein, Taeko Ohnuki released 'Mignonne', an overlooked fusion masterpiece.
The remade version from the 80s extends the solo wayyyyy out. It’s great. She also does a crazy good high belt towards the end in that version too.
Strings were arranged by the producer, Andrew Powel, who was behind the arangements of most of the output of the Alan Parsons Project - Alan Parsons, of course, engineered Dark Side of the Moon, which featured David Gilmour... It was David Gilmour who discovered and supported Kate Bush and arranged for her to be signed by EMI Records. It's all one big circle...!
I was 8/9 years old when I heard this song for the first time.. I was scared yet so moved by her voice. Like a "possessed" angel. And although being Dutch and to young to understand the lyrics I had the image right away I figured years later to be spot on. It felt so hauntingly/ghostly..yet so inviting. So I can say that this song is so important for me because for such a little boy.. I felt it.. I understood it. I had never experienced something like that before!
Now I'm 44 and still she puts this spell on me.. it touches me in my core! So thank you very much for this video!

Such a badass move by Kate to make the chorus of her hit song in 10/4 time, and her band makes it sound effortless.
When I first heard her voice (which was in this song) I found it arresting, exhilarating and spine-tingling. I was also watching her at the same time and what she was doing produced the same effect, so it was quite an intense experience. I loved all the startling swoops that she did with her voice, the uniqueness of the sound, and the originality of the song's subject.

Kate Bush featured on a Go West track called The King Is Dead. She did the backing vocals, and has recently been remastered. You will find it on RUclips. There is a nice extended version too, with the piano.
You asked the question so I will answer it:
This was in the year of grace 1978; and we have a large number of pirate radios and one of them in particular diffused this song of Kate Bush.
I had never heard it before as it was in her debut album.
I was charmed like my soul was touched by a fairy.
My thought cocerning Kate was similar to what Sean Connery said about Karen Matheson - "Karen Matheson has a throat that is surely touched by God".
He just put it better than I ever could.
Later on I found the wax copy of her album debut album - this was times before the Compact Disc (CDs).
For me, this song had always set the standard for voice and for music.
Haunting and beautiful, her voice is so unique. I don't think anyone sounds quite like her to this day (more than 4 decades since her debut). She maintains the high pitch for so long. No one else has done that so effectively, at least within this genre. Army Dreamers and Breathing are also great songs of hers.
What you have to take in to account how much of a pioneer she is and was. She was one of the first artists when she toured in 79, that but on a show, with the music, including magic , mime and dancers. She was the first artist to wear a head mike on tour, invented for her by her sound tech guy at the time. She was among the first artist to embrace sampling . Using sound other than music to enhance her tracks. Look at most modern female singers and some where you will find some bit of Kate there.
The guitar solo in Wuthering Heights, played by Iain Bairnson... Oh. My... It is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever. INSIDE this already gorgeous songs... Heavenly!

My first exposure to Kate Bush was her live TV debut on Saturday Night Live, hosted by Eric Idle, back in the 1970s. I vaguely remember her performing this song, but the song that really knocked me out was "The Man with the Child in His Eyes," which to this day has remained one of my favorite songs, ever. This song is based on the book Wuthering Heights, and Cathy is dead... Here's Kate is playing a ghost, trying to reunite with the man she loves (but is not exactly a very decent person.) Kate was "discovered" by David Gilmour, and over the years, became one of the most revered female artists. Many famous female vocalist cite her as an influence, for instance, Tori Amos. She rarely performed live, and was planning a US tour, but as I recall, her only concert tour was in 1979. She was persuaded to perform concerts in residency in 2014, playing 22 shows at the Hammersmith Apollo, titled "Before the Dawn." All 22 shows sold out in 15 minutes, and drew people from all over the world. I would have gone myself, flying from Kansas City to London, and paying whatever amount for a ticket, had I not been extremely ill, and planning some major surgery when the shows were announced. Kate released audio recordings of the concerts, and it's spectacular. I wish with all my heart that she would release a concert BluRay... "Kate Bush at the Hammersmith Odeon" from 1979 just isn't enough.

For me it is a song that gets better every year. I hated it when I was 8 and it was released, in 50 now and it is one of the best songs I have ever heard...

Quick note, I play piano and that verse chord sequence is really unique. A / F / E7 / C#7 , dropping major thirds like that is really ominous

Major props for covering Kate Bush. I happened to be in London in 2014 when she did her four week residency at Hammersmith Odeon (as documented in the Before The Dawn live album) but sadly I could not make an opportunity to go. And yes I kick myself regularly for not making a way.

Being a rock/metal fan i was like WTF but her voice and performance of this song mesmerized me. She said her inspiration for this song was when she was younger watching Wuthering heights and the scene of cathy pleading to be let in the house on the moors in the rain and cold and it was such a powerful scene it stuck in her mind and later she wrote this song about it .

I was about 8 when I first heard Kate. So her voice felt like someone more more my age. It's grown with me. Kate is playing a ghost trying to lure her obsessive lover to his death.

here in Brazil we have a famous singer called Tetê Espíndola and she has a very similar singing tone, so when I first heard this song (YEARS ago) I immediately remembered her.
The thing that many don't appreciate is that she went through extensive "training" before recording this album. She was brought to Dave Gilmore's attention who put her in touch with EMI as a youngish teenager. She has some sort of "training" from EMI (who saw or were brought to see her potential), went through mime and dance training with Lyndsay Kemp, played with her older brothers pub band before recording this album. Her brother is a talented musician. Her parents were middle class and relatively wealthy and well educated (her father was a GP, general doctor), all of which feed into her musical upbringing.
I remember clearly from 1978, I was 18 years old when this enigmatic sound came out of the radio, I was literally speechless for about 5 mimutes until I could actually accept what I had heard, incredible beyond description, song & vocals, kinda still feel this way!

Ok. Like you, I was totally taken aback by her voice. At first she sounded a little bit like a little girl, or how a doll might sound if it could sing, but also like you, it kinda grew on me as the song progressed and I found myself enjoying it. Weird. Seriously, it felt a little weird that I kinda started enjoying her voice and the music, in the way that I did.
I see from the comments that many just love her and I think that's really cool. Had I listened to her more, I might feel the same. Gotta give her all the props though for how unique and different she is. That alone is a real gift.

I thought you were going to say, “Tori Amos,” for some reason she’s who I was thinking of-not Joanna Newson, but I hear that now as well.
The first time I heard Kate Bush’s voice, “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God),” and I never thought about how high pitched her voice is, but re-listening to that song I can hear it there too, but her voice clearly becomes more diverse in range than in “Wurthering Heights.”
As an English major, I urge you to read the story, it’s not that long-there’s also a film adaptation.
Fun fact. When Tori Amos got started making records, people were saying to her: Kate Bush yo!!! You are soo inspired by Kate!
And Tori was like, "who is Kate Bush? I'd better check her out"
And sure enough, Tori saw why people would say that, but she didn't know. One of those things 🤷♂️

There is this interview with Kate around the time "Wuthering Heights" came out which caught people completely by surprise. Because this wide eyed elf-like girl who'd throw her body around with wild abandon in very intricate dance routines, turned out to be a very prim and proper, somewhat demure, very English lady.
The one who interviewed her was well informed and respectful, one question he asked her if singing "Wuthering Heights" strained her voice. At which Kate said that she never sang in a way which strained her voice or made her feel uncomfortable.
You should really hear the version of this she did on her "greatest hits" album (The Whole Story). The vocals are re-recorded with AMAZING power. Goose-bump inducing power. I prefer it to the original release, but probably only because it was the version I heard first, as The Whole Story was the first Kate album I ever bought. But you should hear it at least once.

By now, I suppose you know that she's a ghost appearing at the window looking for Heathcliffe. Wuthering Heights is a big Gothic tale.
Her voice on that song was a huge barrier for me -- like someone else said, just nails on a chalkboard. I missed out on a lot of her stuff after that for that reason. All that changed when Hounds of Love came out and a friend lent it to me to convince me to give her a second chance. That's the album that has Cloudbusting, a song inspired by the story of Wilhelm Reich and his son. It also has Running Up That Hill and the whole album is packed with great stuff. If you want to listen to Cloudbusting at some point, don't wait too long and do yourself a huge favour and listen to the whole album.

Your question. When I first heard this. 6 years old. I had never heard anything like it.. I remember feeling something new, something inspiring. And I still haven't heard anything quite like it, except from all the younger singers who clearly are inspired by her. #fanforlife

All you got, back in the day, was Top of the Pops, every Thursday, 7pm? Once a week for music. Such a great time. Unique voice and talent.
When my brother first played me "Hounds of Love" in 1985, I said "She sounds like a Hoover vacuum cleaner." But I couldn't get that voice out of my head! Later, I heard her song "This Woman's Work" in the film "She's Having a baby" and I ran out and bought her album, "The Sensual World". Maxwell later covered it, but nobody can top Kate's version.

You need to watch the movie/read the book (which the song is based on)... in brief: Kathy and Heathcliff were in love, they fall out, Healthcliff leaves, Kathy marries someone else, Heathcliff comes back, they still love each other, Kathy dies and comes back as a ghost to haunt Healthcliff... a haunting story, a haunting song, and to me, one of the best songs ever written. (also, just a picky note: in your description you list the Album as 'Wuthering Heights', but even your video, in the bottom right corner, it shows a thumbnail of 'The Kick Inside', which is the album!).

Her first song and one of the first she wrote at age 16 I think or was it 13? First time I heard her was on Running Up That Hill. Her voice sounded witchy(in the sexy sense), enchanting and wise. Check our AL of HOUNDS OF LOVE as a complete album from start to finish.

I was hooked immediately when I first heard this song. She forced her emotions on me. It was overwhelming and intoxicating to me. Listen to The Kick Inside, her debut album. Recorded at age 18. A masterpiece, a classic album.
In this song the main character Cathy is trying to make contact from 'the other side' with her lover Heathcliff, after she died. You can hear the urge in her singing the story.

Kate was so young when she recorded Wuthering Heights. It’s recorded on another album (not in front of me- plz don’t ask which one). But I will say her voice is less tinny. To me her voice is actually soothing and angelic. I know not everyone feels that way.

I was 12 when this song came out and in the UK and Ireland all the kids watched this weekly tv show called top of the pops that showcased different songs on the charts, it was always very exciting because at the end you'd get to find out who was at #1, that was always the last song. When Kate Bush was on top of the pops for the first time with Wuthering Heights everyone in school was buzzing the next morning about this singer with the crazy voice and the crazy movements and we couldn't believe it, we'd never heard anything like it. Everyone was an instant fan and we were always thrilled when we heard she had a new song.
And thats how a lifetime fan is born😃

Kate Bush's family produced a demo tape with over 50 of her compositions, which was turned down by record labels. Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour received the demo from Ricky Hopper, a mutual friend of Gilmour and the Bush family. Impressed, Gilmour helped the sixteen-year-old Bush record a more professional demo tape. Three tracks in total were recorded and paid for by Gilmour. The tape was produced by Gilmour's friend Andrew Powell, who went on to produce Bush's first two albums, and sound engineer Geoff Emerick, who had worked with the Beatles. The tape was sent to EMI executive Terry Slater, who signed her.
You probably already know all of this but I just discovered you and I can’t help myself. Wuthering Heights is the kind of book that an 18 year old falls in love with (I did) because it is passionate and heartbreaking. What you said about it being a song written by a young person and a narrower view than adults made me think of how consuming the book was for me (as it must have been for her).

When I first heard her voice I recoiled a bit, as i listened more and more and my musical tastes matured I grew to love her so much. I've not delved deep into her extensive career but everything I've heard, I love it.

This song has one of my favorite bridges of all time. This song still sounds wonderfully well produced to this day. Kate's family is very musical, they often played on her records.
Oh, I didn't think I knew this one, but I remember it from long ago. Probably had this cd, lol. Very cool! I like her voice, it's ownable, and intimate. It's is like a delicate ballet dancer, reaching out in beauty with sparkle and radiance.
