    Oh crap, I missed that you did this one. Back in the early 90s, The Cure put out an album of remixes of some of their most popular songs (the album was called Mixed Up). The remix they did of this song, "A Forest - Tree Mix" is my favorite Cure song ever. They just took this song and really elevated it, giving it a very electro style. Since you've already reacted on camera to the original, there's no need to do it again, but I highly recommend you listen to the remix on your own when you get a chance.

    • @bschuler6216
      @bschuler6216 2 года назад

      Mehta, 80's remixing was not all that. They just extended songs by about 3 minutes with the same overused drum beat.
      The 90's had better remix albums. Bjork had a great one called Telegram I think. Skinny Puppy had a good remix album called Rhy Distemper or something. Even Fear Factory's remix of Demanufacture, Remanufacture was kind of interesting.
      But at least Mixed-Up gave us a new Cure single, Never Enough.

    Yes, Joy Division and The Cure are both considered "post punk", as punk was thought to come in around 75-76, peak at 77, and die by 78 - at least in that iteration (it of course has gone on in other iterations, but for that first wave, it's considered dead by 78/79). The bands that came after that had the punk energy and rawness but were more creative and they could play their instruments a little better than their punk predecessors. Many of them started as simple punk bands but evolved, like Joy Division.
    Joy Division is considered the first goth band, they were the ones that really brought in that dark style and many were influenced by them, including the Cure who were operating at the same time. The Cure have covered Joy Division before, so for sure Robert Smith (the singer) was into Joy Division. This darker end of the post punk scene is the start of goth music, long before anyone thought of goth as Hot Topic and Marilyn Manson, it was just dark post punk.

    • @pinkraven4402
      @pinkraven4402 4 года назад

      Yeah, first wave of punk was short, but punk despite its primitiveness gave sooo much to rock music because of the genres that were born as an inspiration and development of punk. All alternative rock genres come from punk. Hardcore punk, crust punk, my beloved post-hardcore (90's wave), indie, alt, grunge, post-punk, math... Kinda ironic that genre that embraced simplicity gave birth to such progressive genres as post-hardcore or math rock :)

    Very good analysis. I would also highly suggest Fascination Street from the Disintegration albumn. It has the same dark atmospheric sound like A Forest with an incredible baseline. Fascination Street is another signature Cure sound. The Cure was part of the post punk scene, specifically Goth New Wave, Coldwave, Darkwave of the 80s. They also produced quirky alternative pop tunes as well, typical of the 80s.

    The Cure was another great early '80s band with fantastic bass elements. This was one of the first songs I knew of theirs. I've liked them from the early '80s and even when I borrowed a boyfriend's bass in the mid '90s, along with Sex Pistols, I was playing bits of Cure songs by ear, despite not knowing how to play bass at all. Simon Gallup is probably my most familiar bassist of theirs. I get a kick out of you thinking this song was upbeat. It's definitely a dark song to me. Later Cure songs that I can think of (Kiss Me3) had a more upbeat aspect to even some of the darker songs. This one is definitely dark to me, in part because of the bass. It's always ticking away in the background, to the final element of the song. Oh, but I love how you talk about how you'd buy the album and listen to it while looking/reading liner notes/lyrics, etc. I just bought three Japan CDs that arrived yesterday and I'm working my way through them that way. I miss that element of music. I used to buy the vinyl and devour every element of text and photos. I had The Cure's Standing on a Beach compilation on cassette which folded out to include all of the lyrics. Now I need a damn magnifying glass, but I miss that element of music listening, which is why I still buy physical copies of stuff I really like.

    The Cure's best album is still "Pornography"(1982 their darkest album and atmospheric as hell) "Cold and "Siamese Twins" are both off that album and my two favorites to this day. Everyone seems to know only two songs "Just Like Heaven" and "Friday I'm In Love" overplayed.I love every single song from The Cure. Seeing this live which I have many times two years ago being the most recent. Robert Smith played live for three hours straight and it was fantastic. "Swimming the Same Deep Water As You"-(played at my wedding) off "Disintegration " is my other favorite as well. "A Forest" live is on a whole other level too. Robert Smith was also in another phenomenal band Siouxsie and Banshees if you get a chance listen to her "Overground" is amazing as well as "Swimming Horses" which Smith is on.

    There's a distinct line between 80's SYNTH POP NEW WAVE and the music of the 70's and 60's. Not only in technology but in purpose. New Wave was meant to sound different musicality and tone. We thought technology would not only save us but destroy us with nuclear annihilation. This music sounds nothing like the 60's and 70's because artists were creating a new sound that was the foundation for genres to come. Awesome time to grow up in.

    Good connection between this and Joy Division since Joy Division were a big influence on The Cure. If you listen to the Joy Division song Atmosphere you will really notice, especially in the music the influence on The Cure that Joy Division had (especially The Cure Album Disintegration). And Robert Smith play lead guitar for Siouxsie & The Banshees for a short time and said that experience taught him how powerful this type of music could be. So have a listen to Joy Division's Atmosphere and Siouxsie & The Banshees Spellbound or any of their singles in your own time, no need to react to them. Cheers from Down Under;)

    Seventeen Seconds is a very simple album. For a while it was my favorite, especially because of A Forest and Play For Today. There's an album for every kind of mood, though. First time I listened to this album, I was already in my 20's. Still, this is nostalgia triggered every time I hear one of those songs. Up to that point I listened to songs with guitars, exclusively. These still have guitar, but they were the gateway to music that doesn't need it.
    I was not one of those who discovered stuff in their teens. Prior to the internet, I knew only what was on the radio with a few exceptions. So, I was familiar with Friday I'm In Love, of course. Lovecats and Close To Me. The Cure's past was entirely unknown to me. I probably heard Boys Don't Cry before, but I didn't connect it to that band. Exploring the entire discography of The Cure was full of surprises...can't recall any similar experience since that time. Not even with Pink Floyd.
    Lonely Soul is pretty neat! Need to check out some more. However, it does not remind me of A Forest or The Cure in the slightest.

    Joy Division are from the same era. They even played together once. But The Cure as the eighties came along, were heavily influenced by Joy Division, and it's known that New Order were one of Robert's favorite bands throughout the eighties. The Cure covered JD's "Love Will Tear Us Apart". It's nowhere near as good as the original, but it's a decent cover

    The Forest is one of their best early songs. Since I believe you have stated that you enjoy synth pop, you might check out “The Walk” or “Let’s Go to Bed”. These are some good examples of their 80’s more “synthy” more “poppy” middle era which culminated in the album “Disintegration” which is arguably the pinnacle of their creative accomplishments.

    The Cure are one of my faves. There is SO MUCH to choose from. You should do another reaction soon. The following are a few of my favorite songs: Disintegration, The Holy Hour, and Play for Today. As far as Joy Division, check out: Disorder, Shadowplay, Dead Souls, and Heart and Soul. JD are a bit of an acquired taste and honestly I'd recommend just listening to full albums as opposed to songs to get a true feel. It took me a little bit to get used to Ian's vocals, but once it clicked, it *clicked*.
