    Not sure if you know the backstory to the "A Forest" performance. They were told to cut their performance short to make time for Robert Palmer which Robert Smith wasn't happy about. To show their displeasure, they played this nine minute version of this song with much being impromptu. You can see the unhappiness and intensity in Robert Smith's face during the song too. That's why at the end Robert yells, "I hope you like the rest of it" and Simon Gallup yells, "Fuck Robert Palmer. Fuck rock 'n roll."

    This drummer seems to be able to adapt to many different styles. The first song was more of a punk song, so the drummer hit a lot harder and went crazy with the fills and cymbal hits. The second song was more of a dance track, so he just played a simple groove with very minimal fills. A drummer who is this easily adaptable to styles that are so different could easily land many gigs with many different bands.

      One thing to note: this live version of "10:15 Saturday Night" was actualky several times faster than the studio (or any other version I've ever personalky heard, for that matter); not sure why they chose to do it that way, but there you have it.
      Also, from 1984 on (from their 6th studio album "The Top") Lol Tolhurst was no longer utilized as the drummer; from then on he was primarily utilized as a keyboardist (along with some other miscellaneous instruments). I have heard it was because he couldn't keep up with the beat patterns that Robert Smith (guitarist/singer/band founder/primary composer and lyricist) wanted, so they hired another drummer to take over the role (who has also been replaced). Eventually, Lol was let go from the band (after the 1987 release and tour in support of the album "Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me"), due to being unable to perform to standard attributed all or in part to alcoholism. Not sure what or how much of all of this is true, as it's just what I've heard and have not corroborated.

    A forest is very interesting live years after years. This song is built tour by tour by new line ups, new sound of album areas, new instruments. It really can be taken as a cure-meter through the ages.
    One of the few songs that will always be in the track list any tour.

      And because of the way it's structured, it's the perfect song to throw in new twists, ad-libs, and impromptu riffs. Besides being THE most played song at concerts, it is never exactly the same.

    Very well known Cure songs but USA did not jump on the wagon until years later. But since you didn't know the songs it would perhaps have been better to compare the studio versions. Both songs are often considered as one of their best.

      The Patron requested this particular live battle, we didn't just randomly find vids

    • @annatraustadottir4387
      @annatraustadottir4387 3 года назад

      @@ReactionsToTheClassics I know, my reply was response to the patron's choice. These two live videos do not show the brilliance of the songs well enough (my opinion). I guess, I just wanted music that I love, being showed in the best light possible 😉. Especially since many people (maybe watching this video) don't know The Cure's music prior to the late 80's (and some may not know their music at all or very little). As a Cure fan, it's fun to watch these early performances (10:15 On a Saturday night very raw) and the difference in Robert Smith's appearance compared to what came few years later. The music change is huge from the 1979 album "Three imaginary boys" (punk influenced, sometimes poppy) with "10:15 on a Saturday night" on the tracklist to the 1980 album "Seventeen seconds" (long intros-atmospheric-gloomy, post-punk music) with "A forest" (although there are some similarities). The Cure's third album, which is maybe my favorite, is still more gloomy and you can see the Joy division influence (An another band which music is even more depressive and I of course love even more 😉)
      But if you don't know the songs beforehand, I don't think these live videos will make you a fan and battle comparison between these songs based on these live videos makes little sense to me and to decide which performance is better is also for many reasons difficult.

    Shawn and Trey, The video on the first song is cool the way the stage is set up and the way they play the crowd, which is large. They are good musicians and there is a lot of instrumentation. The song has a Punk Rock sound, a hard rocking song. The song has a brisk tempo and has energy. The second song is also a video presentation. This is a solid rocker. I agree Trey on the tone of the guitar as he is playing. These guys are excellent musicians. This song has more stability and structure. You guys are right about the visual effects in the video. I agree the guitar is the highlight. You guys both chose the second song A Forest as the winner. I agree and also choose the second song as the winner.. The music has a unique tone on the instrumentation.

      Michael Dempsey toured for "Three Imaginary Boys" during 1979 and 1980; he left before they started recording for "Seventeen Seconds" (which was also released in 1980), being replaced by Simon Gallup.

    Definitely prefer ‘a forest’, a more unique /authentic sound and the begging of their transition to alternative (for lack of a better term). The live versions are always great too, it apparently became tradition for them to extend the song and improvise those parts.
    Definitely looking forward to album reactions of pornography or 17 seconds (the latter being the album this song is on.
    One hundred years is a good song to react to from pornography, it’s simulate to a forest in how dark and atmospheric it is, I’d 100% recommend listening to a studio version rather than a live one tho.
