I remember the first time i ever heard this song,i was at a biker festival and i was half pissed, about 10 years ago. I just heard that opening guitar sound and i ran to the tent where the band were playing it,i was just mesmerised by it,and the band were absolutely fantastic at it too,the tent was all lit up by a green light and it was really late at night,it was just a fantastic atmosphere, loved the song ever since.
Yes yes yes.......this is what I’ve been waiting for! Adrian you have great taste in music. Loved your Siouxie and the Banshees, Smiths, PIL and Happy Monday’s riffs.....and now The Cure. You are one of the best teachers on RUclips. More Cure please.
"It's flanger time!" Loved that intro! Thank you, Sir, for an amazing tutorial of this Postpunk classic. I salute your good taste and courage for choosing this and other songs I LOVE!!! Your work on The Cure, Siouxie and the Banshees, Wire, The Fall, Cramps, etc, is a class act. Suscribed!
"It's flanger time, kids!" 😀 Just discovered this song, at 45 years of age, thanks to you Adrian, and the youtube algorithm (of course I am a Patreon member)! I will take my time enjoying this! All the best! 😊
This is just what I needed. There are so many covers and tutorials for this song, but this is the first one I've found that actually offers some explanation of the solo, the improvisation and the dissonance at the end - thank you!
This is amazing stuff. Great teaching of one of the best songs ever made ! And so easy to learn as a one month old beginner. Using a Fender Mustang to get the right effects and off we go... now needing a black wig, mascara & lipstick.
I can still remember going into Doncaster Sth Yorks UK and buying the single after hearing it on John Peels radio show, I then saw the band at Sheffield Polytechnic shortly after, to be honest, they were crap but I did see them again years later at Sheffield city hall and they were amazing a really tight polished act.
This was Ace, I am going to buy a flanger this week just to get started *I've loved this tune since University days many decades ago and I'm hopeful your lesson (watched probably 100+ times) will help me learn to play it
Great tutorial which inspired me to buy a E-guitar again after many years which I have heard music but didn't play. You teach many songs on your channel which I like very much although I'm quite a bit older than you and live in another country but music unites generations doesn't matter where they live. Thanks.
Who would have thought that exactly one year later, this comment 2:42 has people's eyebrows hitting the ceiling. Hope your well Adrian. You got me with this one buddy. You had me jamming right along with you on my air-guitar. You're a wizard! Order's in on the "Broadcaster." Thanks.
Managed to download a great patch for this song to my Katana and was looking for a tutorial. This is fabulous - thank you so much you are an excellent teacher
Thanks Adrian. Really enjoyed this one and 'Play for today'. Re the BF-3 - I just bought one of those, before I saw this video (honest) and just before I saw 'Play for today' the other week. Both videos very well explained and easy to follow, cheers.
I remember learning this by ear. And I got it right. No internet, no books or any other sources of knowledge. Just guitar and a casette tape. Primary is great. Especially The Concert version.
I think they discovered the flange effect when overdubbing a guitar track from a tape and someone rubbed their thumb on one of the flanges of the spinning tape reel causing random delays and phase shifts when the original track and the overdubbed tape are mixed together.
Thankyou for clearing up the flange part in a forrest . Its been 25 years trying to work out how they did it. The riff i am talking off is the verse riff. Its what gives the song its intensity to me. A bassline not on a bass. I have seen them live but prefer them on vinyl. The verse riff phases in and out in the track a little adding further ambience to me. I must have heard it well over 5000 times and it never gets old.....like me. I was in my 20s when it was released. Thanks for a great video....props. The beginning of fascination st with Rob playing the intro has a similar ambience and depth.
Thanks a lot. Two years ago i bought a Squier VI + Mustang GT100. Now i have time and got a nice Flanger-preset and it sounds...hmmmmm. I'm listen to The Cure since 1981. More Vids, please. Greets from Germany/Frank
That was very satisfying to watch you play this. Flanger was the first effect pedal I ever had, an old mid 80's DOD one and stereo. I way overused it for sure. lol
Bang on as usual Adrian, with one small caveat; when it gets to the 'chorus', I've sometimes heard Robert play it as thirds, (so, E string 7th fret with A string 6th fret for the 'B' chord, and then E string 8th fret/A string 7th fret for the 'C' chord. He always plays the F sharp and the F as power chords though). I'm so glad to see you using the old BF-2 flanger. The Bf-3 just doesn't sound as authentic, especially the feedback. This goes for anyone trying to get the Billy Duffy 'She Sells Sanctuary' sound as well; you need the BF-2.
Brilliant. The Cure have done some lovely guitar work. Would love a lesson on Friday I’m in Love. Sounds like there’s so much happening but I’m damned if I know what it is. Like Television. Two guitar lines intertwined.
Gorgeous song. Incredible taste demonstrated again. It's nice hearing the songs without vocals (no disrespect, Ian, Rowland, Robert, Tom or Mark E ;-) Breakdown (and then) was lovely.
Adrian, you’re the best guitar tutor on RUclips. You cover such great songs.
Anyone else here after ceremony?
@@rageagainsthememe71 Hes fucking brilliant is Adrian
Superb teacher.
Spellbound
I can't agree more.
Early Cure had some really unique guitar parts. Robert Smith is underrated as a guitarist. Simple but very distinctive and unusual

This song inspired me to pick up the guitar over 30 years ago. It was the first song I learned.
Same, except it was just 2 years ago
What age are you now?
Same, this was really the first Cure song i discovered on my own. I was instantly drawn in, crazy how tremendous the trilogy was in the early days.
same.. in 82
Yes yes yes.......this is what I’ve been waiting for! Adrian you have great taste in music. Loved your Siouxie and the Banshees, Smiths, PIL and Happy Monday’s riffs.....and now The Cure. You are one of the best teachers on RUclips. More Cure please.
True
It's not just your playing , it's your attention to detail with the gear that makes you the best on RUclips, keep them coming master
This song is so beautiful it makes me cry
Thanks!
Could not even tell you how much I appreciate your stuff . Thanks for all your brilliant vids always presented with class and humour.
Amazing stuff.. More Cure please!
I second that more Cure please
I third that!
#metoo !
I fourth that. There just isnt enough of the cure on youtube
Yes - Jumping Someone Else's Train
"It's flanger time!" Loved that intro!

Would love a further delve in to the solo and ending dissonance. Part 2 needed!!!
This is amazing stuff. Great teaching of one of the best songs ever made ! And so easy to learn as a one month old beginner. Using a Fender Mustang to get the right effects and off we go... now needing a black wig, mascara & lipstick.
YES!!! Fantastic video... the Cure is so overlooked in the guitar community
True true total guitar band 3 pc in the beginning
johnny marr 🔛🔝
Flanger is such an incredible effect!!! Great vid
This is one of the best guitar lessons I've ever seen
Robert Smith thought of us the beginners at the guitar when he composed this song 😂💜😙🔥Thank you for doing such an understandable tutorial!
Good man keep the great work up, the only guy I can understand on RUclips when describing how songs are played
Wonderful tone, wonderful lesson(s). Thanks mister.
Great tutorial. Really opened up a whole new world of dusty black coats, black nail varnish and patchouli. I'm off to swirl now. Watch my cider chaps.
Awesome content! I like that you add a bit of theory in there too for us nerds. Thank you, Adrian, thank you.
Your name rings a bell. You're not from Barnsley by any chance are you?
First Andy Gill then Robert Smith - you are the gift that keeps on giving.
This was Ace, I am going to buy a flanger this week just to get started *I've loved this tune since University days many decades ago and I'm hopeful your lesson (watched probably 100+ times) will help me learn to play it
You're on a roll with the indie favourites. Brilliant!
Thank you. I knew some parts of the song, but you filled the missing partsnin a clear and educational way. Easy to learn and follow.
Great tutorial which inspired me to buy a E-guitar again after many years which I have heard music but didn't play. You teach many songs on your channel which I like very much although I'm quite a bit older than you and live in another country but music unites generations doesn't matter where they live. Thanks.
You are the greatest on RUclips.
I would love to CCR’s Green river.
Absolutely amazing video. Probably the clearest guitar tutorial I’ve seen. Glad you showed up on my feed.
I'm going to savour this one! You might have unlocked a massive list of requests for other Cure songs (Killing an Arab, being one!)
Saw this performed live three times and this lesson is the perfect way to teach it as Robert noodles more on this song than others.
Massive Cure fan, absolutely love this song, great cover!
Managed to download a great patch for this song to my Katana and was looking for a tutorial. This is fabulous - thank you so much you are an excellent teacher
Hi David, Please could you point in the right direction to find the Katana patch? Cheers, Neil.
Really amazing song. Thank you. And I agree with the commet below. You're one of the few turors on this site that I acutally learn something from.
Thanks Adrian. Really enjoyed this one and 'Play for today'. Re the BF-3 - I just bought one of those, before I saw this video (honest) and just before I saw 'Play for today' the other week. Both videos very well explained and easy to follow, cheers.
Just found your channel. Where have you been all my life? New order and cure songs and Andy Gill! Bless you
I remember learning this by ear. And I got it right. No internet, no books or any other sources of knowledge. Just guitar and a casette tape. Primary is great. Especially The Concert version.
Thanks, realize I've been playing it a bit wrong, those accents make a massive difference, one of my favourites
One of the first songs I ever worked out on guitar. Classic.. and beginner friendly....
Oh and every new guitarists fav pedal ;)
I really appreciate you putting this together and explaining the effects used! 🙏 👍 Great playing as well!
Love the way his head wobbles about like its on a stick hahah . Great song choices by the way .....Your de Maaaan ...
I think they discovered the flange effect when overdubbing a guitar track from a tape and someone rubbed their thumb on one of the flanges of the spinning tape reel causing random delays and phase shifts when the original track and the overdubbed tape are mixed together.
What new piece of sweetness is this! Great (unexpected) choice. Flange it!
I have literally no idea how to play the guitar but only after 30 min I can play the melody of my favorite song because of you!🙏🤝
Thankyou for clearing up the flange part in a forrest . Its been 25 years trying to work out how they did it.
The riff i am talking off is the verse riff.
Its what gives the song its intensity to me. A bassline not on a bass. I have seen them live but prefer them on vinyl.

The beginning of fascination st with Rob playing the intro has a similar ambience and depth.
Always great song choices with your lessons. Thanks!
Thanks a lot. Two years ago i bought a Squier VI + Mustang GT100. Now i have time and got a nice Flanger-preset and it sounds...hmmmmm.
I'm listen to The Cure since 1981. More Vids, please. Greets from Germany/Frank
Flawless song from a flawless album
I don’t usually comment. But gotta say you rocked it Adrian
Jesus 1980 I bought the single. Another great choice Adrian.
Such a great song for a beginner to learn, since almost every modeling amp nowadays has some built-in effects! Thank you and get well soon!
This is great. At one point towards the end of the intro, during the third repeat of the opening riff, Robert seems to be practicing his scales...
Thank you Adrian, great lesson, and you had a cold too, respect mate!
Another great video Adrian it’s like you’ve ransacked my record collection
Probably my favorite Cure song ever. It's so damn moody.
Wow! Great lesson, great song.
Awesome - great job. Lot's of fun.
You are a fantastic and cool guitarist. Cheers from France
One of my favourite guitar tracks - learnt this a while back but wasn't so good on the power chords, so going to watch you do it the right way ;-)
Absolutely fantastic lesson video!!! not to mention one of my favorite Cure songs. Thanks a lot!!!
keep it up!!!
love this guy, such a good instructor
Great. There's that tiny bass accompaniment bit before the song gets going at the end of the first change. Priceless video thanks 🙂
The Low Spark of hi heeled Boys!! Yes,thnx Mr A love your choices.
Amazing selection and tone as always Adrian!
i had no idea about flange being, a Lennon thing... wow, also, i love your authenticity with this style and attention to detail, great channel.
I really reallyreally enjoyed practicing this even though i play mostly bass, you are an excellent teacher thank youso much
the final solo is really different every time, it's more like a jam. I really liked when they did these extended live versions
I wish you lived in my town so that I could take lessons from you. Brilliant tutorial!
Best tutor on the net! Great songs and great lessons
That was very satisfying to watch you play this. Flanger was the first effect pedal I ever had, an old mid 80's DOD one and stereo. I way overused it for sure. lol
Adrian...you are a legend buddy and your taste in music is the same as mine (bloody awesome). Please never stop doing these 🤣👍
Excellent Adrian...A great lesson on a fabulous song!
Awesome video! Another vote for more songs by The Cure please :)
Wonderfull ! i love this song. You're a good teacher and you have a very good feeliing with your Jazzmaster. Thank you very much from France.
love this lesson Adrian. Learning so much from your channel
Loving the song choices on the channel, cheers mate! :)
Great Adrian! Many thanks, what a dark atmosphere that this song has, from a pure 80s post punk era
You really are the best tutor! Having so much fun! Thank you
Thank you. A very good breakdown for an intermediate player.
Excellent clear & logical video.Well done!
Hy Adrian. Will you be able to do a little session en PUSH van CURE please. Have a great day and many thank for your class. Love it.
You play some of the coolest songs on youtube. Nice to have variety.
This song is meditative, thankyou👍
Dammit why did I get rid of my flanger!?
Another classic.. another great lesson. Thanks Adrian.
Thanks for covering these songs
Thank you for this. Really helped me tonight.
They are different recordings, because the original masters were lost. So the Mixed up 12 inch recording was a re-recording.
This goes for anyone trying to get the Billy Duffy 'She Sells Sanctuary' sound as well; you need the BF-2.
when i want to learn a song in music to my taste...This is the place I go...thanks mate
I’m loving the Jazzmaster
Brilliant. The Cure have done some lovely guitar work. Would love a lesson on Friday I’m in Love. Sounds like there’s so much happening but I’m damned if I know what it is. Like Television. Two guitar lines intertwined.
What a lovely version, really like this
Volume went to FULL....and stayed there! Great tone and awesome lesson.
From the best Cure record. A fav of mine since the mid 80's.
I need to grab a flanger pedal. I am thinking of the mxr 117. Then will hit this video in the coming week or so.
O and more Cure songs please.
Gorgeous song. Incredible taste demonstrated again. It's nice hearing the songs without vocals (no disrespect, Ian, Rowland, Robert, Tom or Mark E ;-) Breakdown (and then) was lovely.
Thanks for these lessons man. I love your song selection
I wasn’t a big fan of the Cure... but I still thought this lesson was terrific. Well done as always!
Very cool
My all time favourite Cure
Thx
