- Right on schedule, the poppies are germinating! Direct seeded in late November, everything is growing well and getting established for the winter.
It’s not too late to sow! Here is a great seed source www.botanicali...
I have struggled with bread seed poppies in zone 5, but this inspired me to buy more seeds and keep trying. I would take all of you pathway volunteers over my tribulus terrestris.
I have struggled with germinating bread seed poppies myself I buy off the shelf fresh McCormick poppy seeds and I am I am a novice I have been having a very hard time germinating any tips would be helpful I hope for success as I am planting indoors in my large picture window which receives lots of light good luck and thank you everybody
Hopefully you got good results??
@@hassanghumman8269 I was able to get some going by direct sowing, but they struggled and that was my fault. I failed to provide them with rich enough soil and enough water as larger trees on my property soak up all the water.. I've been trying to revive my yard after previous owners sprayed everything with chemicals and never added organic matter to the soil for ten plus years.
I have sown poppies and am checking on the seedlings every few days too. The seedlings are soooo tiny! I can't wait till spring to see them mature.
LOVE your enthusiasm for poppies! Because of you I decided here in 8b Pacific Northwest to seed some more poppies. My first planting in September did come up and are doing fine but I wanted more. So we shall see --its been 2 weeks--am not seeing them yet but not too worried. We here have much cooler nights and more rain likely than you so maybe the germination will be a bit slower. Great video and I cannot WAIT to see poppies in spring!
Oh yay!!! I’m excited to start sowing poppies soon. Finally have some real weather in the forecast!
Some of the best footage of identifying poppy seedlings among other mixed flowers - wonderful video
Thank you!!!
We enjoy watching your You Tube videos! I just want to let you know by watching your You Tube video on sowing poppies I got inspired in planting a small area in my woodland garden where I have some direct sun shine. I seeded the poppies on Saturday after Thanksgiving and they are germinating as of today. They look wonderful !
Love it! Zone 6b. Sowing flowers & grains in containers with prayers & possibly fabric protection as needed.
I just sowed poppy seeds and other cool season annuals about a week ago here in 6a. Also cut back annual pots and sprinkled seeds on top. I’m visiting family next month and going to try and sow some for them as well. I can’t wait to see them in spring! They’re the easiest and most impressive sight 🤩
love ur enthusiasm, first time growing poppies and ngl one of the first plants ive ever grown before at all. i only have a couple sproutlings rn but even that is very rewarding !
Yay! I noticed mine are germinating along with the larkspur and wheat...so excited!
@brie The poppy seeds I bought from you are germinating here in Charlotte! I was pretty sure the seedlings were poppies because I used your "bowling" technique and the spread of the seedlings matches the way I tossed them! I can hardly wait until spring to see them.
That’s awesome!!!! Hooray!!! Yes the key is to remember where you sowed them 😂
Lol to your commentary on the the gravel and walkway paths lol bc that is my goal, now I know what to get that sand stuff... I just germinated peas, and lettuce around this time in year too so very curious first time growing in winter for me.
Beautiful! I’m sowing my poppy & nigella seeds tomorrow. Yay!!
Beautiful rustic bench.
I love this lady…. As much as she loves the word “adjacent” ;)
It’ll be interesting to see if the more advanced poppies survive the winter. They seem happy for now.
I was at Logan's in Raleigh on Saturday Dec 10 and they have put out a lot of 2023 seed packets (although 2022 is fine for some seeds, I did pick up 2023 if available).
I sure hope I have luck with the poppyseeds this year! I'm trying hard, I put mine in pots so I hope to have some luck with them.
After moving to upstate South Carolina, I am still unpacking boxes, but I have found my seed stash. That means, I can start direct seeding!
Absolutely fabulous.. 🌹🌹🌷🌷
I have a problem with little birds eating all my seeds, so I put a layer of soil on top of new seeds. I know you said keep them on top but I don't know what else to do.
What hardiness zone is this? Will it die off from hard freezing?
I live in central North Carolina zone 8. These seedling are hardy to -15f. I’m providing gardening advice for those living in the warm climates.
Here in Portland, OR, we receive lots of rain. Can these pots by left out in the open or do I need to put them under the covered patio?
I would keep them in the open but you may want to try both approaches and see. Just know it’s way too early to sow these. You need to wait until the soil gets cool
Why dont most of you share your zone in the description or at the beginning
Because zones are meaning LESS and LESS with climate changes. Temperature fluctuations influence more than 30 year average lows. I live in central NC, so the southeast climate. That means more than a zone.
So exciting! Ours that we sowed around Thanksgiving are now under 2” of snow but maybe they will be fine.
Snow is great insulation- they should be fine. It’s the dry wind that is causing trouble for people.
We are Nov. in Utah I wonder if can sow inside close to the window.marget😅
Hi, Brie. I have an oddball question for you...
About 40 years ago my Mother-in-Law gave me some poppy pods that her husband (my Father-in-Law) brought back from the war in the Pacific. They have been growing them in a bed in front of their house ever since so they're kind of an heirloom/family tradition.
My question for you is: After sitting in their pods for 40 years what would you say are the odds of them germinating? Do you know of any applicable tips/tricks for increasing the odds? I'm in Zone 8-9 (South Florida) and only have 2 pods (but they're loaded with seeds) and I don't want to waste them. Thanks.
Just sane... :^) Saint
It’s a long shot that they would germinate but it’s worth a try. Maybe sow a few in December in a pot and if they germinate you could sow more? Def do not sow them now, it’s way too hot!
My oak tree still has green leaves on it it almost thanksgiving Soo I already sowed but did put a white cover bc the leaves won't fall until like Feb at this point the acorns are barely starting to fall. So is it ok to cover I'm not sure if will be bad for. But does get cold around Feb -March. Zone 8b Dallas, Texas. My poppies look just like yours now. I'm so like wondering how do they survive the freezes in January?? So crazy sometimes freezes in March/April lately past couple years...
If you don’t get good germination from this round wait and resow when you get cooler weather/ after the leaves fall. It’s tricky in Warmer climates where the timing is strange.
What growing zone are you in? Here in southern Vermont you can't sow lettuce in November.
I live in North Carolina. All my information is upfront in my profile. I’m not trying to advise gardeners in the north.
I thought u can only plant in spring time!
No in warm climates they need to be winter sown.
Hey is it time to scatter the seeds I inherited from u?
Not yet. The ground is still too warm. Probably mid December will be best.
Brie,
Did you water the seeds in the pots?...the ones on the ground?... or did you leave it up to Mother Nature?
Thank you. 😊
I watered them lightly when I sowed the seed and have not watered since.
Do you have a care guide for matsubara red prunus? It blooms at different times of the year and I can’t find any helpful information on them. Im not sure when it goes dormant or when I should prune. Do you have any advice? Should I leave it outside forever or should I bring it inside certain times of the year?
Never bring it inside! It needs to stay outside. Prunus mume are tough and bloom in winter naturally. Prune in June-august to reduce succeeding at cuts. Just treat it like a cherry. Plant it outside and leave it alone.
@@BrieThePlantLady Thanks!
@@BrieThePlantLady Do you recommend a certain soil mix I should use when I repot?
Is this the perennial oriental poppies?
No these are annual poppies.
Can you winter sow Dara & Orlaya now too?
Yes!!!
Do you use fertilizer for poppies?
I do not. I grow mine in compost.
Hi! I have been seeding poppy seeds and they have germinated, but I was asking myself how to use them! What is their use, please?
Nope not going to address that. They are grown for their beautiful flowers only.
@@BrieThePlantLadybut the latex is so yummy
What kind of grit?
I’m learning so much from you. Thank you.
If we have already sown and we are not seeing germination yet, what does that mean? :(
You may want to grab more seed. Generally if they haven’t germinated within 20 days they won’t.
Can you plant poppy seed in ottum
Autumn? Yes cool soil is important
Will the breadseed poppies and corn poppies cross pollinate? If so will the poppies be smaller the next year?
Good question, and I’m not sure! I guess we will see.
Yeaaaah "bread seed" poppy.
