In tears I am. I am the proud inheritor of almost 35 hours of recordings of this man and have listened to wonderful recordings since I was a nipper but never ever seen any video. What I would give now for my father to have seen these videos.

This is a bona fide treasure. We get to see and hear the great McCormack in recital (and wow, at age 47/48 he looks so healthy and FIT!!). Live video footage of ANY opera/concert singers from this era is rare rare rare. A few Vitaphones have survived but not much else. Bravo Mr. McCormack. Bravo Mr. Schneider.

The “audience” for this recreated recital were actually paid to be there and had a rare opportunity to both see and hear one of the great tenors of his time which being paid. John McCormack was himself paid $100,000 which was a huge amount back in pre-income tax 1929. The story is a sappy one but that doesn’t matter because it gives us the opportunity to view a McCormack recital as it once was and to see him perform with “Teddy” Schneider his longtime friend and accompanist. McCormack also made it clear that the story line better not have scenes where he romances a girl.

I’ve got the dvd of this movie. It’s wonderful indeed, even if the storyline is weak. This concert and the other songs in it are heavenly. The little boy shown in the Little Boy Blue song is Wally Allbright, a child actor from the 1930s. Also check out ‘Wings of the Morning’ movie from 1937, starring Henry Fonda, as John McCormack is in it singing a few songs. I’ve got that one on dvd as well.
