I actually don't mind these "experiences" coming to PSVR2 and want more to be made. Something about being able to just go to a location and have that experinece without an objective or mission is nice. I still want a full outdoors VR game that includes hiking, scuba diving, climbing kayaking, and camping. Make that multi-player and I think a lot of people would be interested. As always, awesome review Bryan. I will be picking this one up for the holidays.
Yep. It should be the holodeck. If you want to go play a game, have fun. If you want to just go hang out, enjoy! VR should definitely be everything, not just for shooting anything that moves
I definitely think there's room for less gamey experiences in VR, and I'm looking forward to picking this one up. They even provide a demo so anyone can give it a shot and see if it's their cup of tea. I wish more developers would do the same. Great job on the review, and kudos for calling out the swim turning option. VR very rarely makes me feel ill, but this one got to me a little bit. Turning with the analog stick instead of with my hand gestures, and unlocking the fins and weight belt helped make the movement more uniform and comfortable.
@WithoutParole its crazy. I have a thing with water due to trauma for when I was 6 years old, I literally held on to that rock where the rubber duck is for probably a couple of minutes before I finally let myself submerge
It's been my most anticipated game this year, but after trying the demo on my PS5 Pro I couldn't believe how good and crisp it was. Surpassed all my expectations! Really can't wait for Friday! 😍
Played this on PC with Q3 and PSVR2 and it’s an amazing experience, especially in the caves. I think most people will be aiming to unlock the shark cage where you get to swim with a Great White. When that shark swims towards you it’s one of those moments it tricks the brain and you actually reach out to stop it coming in for you, well, it did for me.
i remember Hubris the most for how cool the swimming felt - but yeah i think the haptics did a LOT for it - i really felt like my hands were moving through water with tiny little vibrations...! hopefully they can add some haptics for that at least!
Ocean Decent was my first vr experience and that was on a demo disc with the psvr1 ,this looks so good I might download the demo...great review Bryan..
VR was created for experiences like this. I finished it on PC VR, and I'm going to buy it on day one on PS VR2. We have to support this developer to death. I hope he releases DLCs with new scenarios. It would be cool to explore a sunken pirate ship...
Blown away by the demo. Defo picking this up The dev said on twitter the reason there's no haptics for swimming is it'd be constant and drain the battery something chronic. Makes sense
That does make sense, but it would be nice if there was an option with a warning about battery life. Some people will want to jump in and play this for 30 minutes and have the most immersive (pun intended) experience just to relax. I'm sure the controllers would last that long.
We've had an hour of comments and there's a preponderance of people talking about feeling unwell playing this. Much to my surprise, I have to include myself in that group. I can play for 15-20 mins before the discomfort goes from mild to moderate, and then I have to take the headset off. No other PSVR2 game has made me feel this way and I've been been playing since launch. It's a slickly made swimming game however, and the early demo is a very agreeable move from the dev. I really hope people aren't putting VR novices into this one for their first game over the Christmas break.
Yeah it got to me a bit too, which is rare. Disabling the swim turning option like Bryan mentions helps, as does purchasing the flippers and weight belt, which allow you to swim forward by holding a button, and ascend/descend using the left analog stick respectively. It makes movement more uniform and comfortable.
What great professional review Bryan you’re the highest on the list of opinions I trust I’ll definitely be picking this up when I’m done my backlog!!! I tried the demo and it was amazing but I didn’t like the swimming it felt weird, slow and trying to push myself down felt like it wasn’t working but maybe I don’t understand the physics or that’s just the demo either way can’t wait to try this one day👍
You summed up my own impressions from the demo perfectly. Whether this qualifies as a 'game' or an 'experienence' really doesn't matter, it's "exactly what it needs to be"
Just got off the demo not too long ago. It’s pretty awesome, can’t wait for the release. Got a bit nauseous playing through the first level, but I haven’t played VR in sometime (getting back into it), and I had a large glass of ice coffee (yes, my mistake) 😬
A technical showcase that apparently has no haptics while swimming or surface water particles / reactive ripples (again!). Or even story, but still scores 9/10? OK Bryan I'll take your word for it! ❤😂 Maybe we all just need this kind of holiday in VR experience. I might have to dust of my "Holiday in VR" video series for this one!
I really want this developer to take a cue from Wander's. Take all that they have already accomplished, use all that they have and make an underwater adventure game and rerelease it as a complete edition with a paid upgrade path
Cool thing about psvr2 is if you get the headset to work again. You can just plug the headset into the ps5 and still play games using the headset without having the ps5 plugged into a TV.
I wish this wasn't coming out the day after Alien (and weeks after Behemoth) . The budget can only fit so many games in a week or month, especially around Christmas time. But I'll definitely get around to this, the demo was a lot of fun
Subside does enough to warrant your time even as a "non-game" where Kayak (minority opinion) did not with no searching and tons of mura. So glad subside has a demo cause I might notve given it a chance otherwise
Snap turning might also help if you need it. And try to unlock the two items in the demo (flippers and weight belt) as soon as possible. They let you move around in a more consistent and comfortable way. Another user said turning down their brightness a bit helped them feel less queasy (could be an image persistence thing).
@@GreyMatterShades Thanks. I've dropped the brightness when I first bought the unit, which made a big improvement. Next time I load it up, I'll try the other movement settings.
This is a great game!! Not a usual one but original! After 20’mins I started to feel the motion sickness a bit…. I turned ON snap turning and tried not to use them but turn myself around physically. 👍 Using one hand to rotate cause a bit of sickness anyway. Super clear graphics!!! Awesome for showcasing PSVR2 to friends!!
Yeah definitely worth disabling swim turning. Also unlocking the flippers and weight belt helps, as they can make your movement more smooth and consistent.
Man I still think that Kayak is great. I just loved the kickback and relaxation effect of it. I also don't get how everybody talks like there isn't a game in there because it has RACES which are great and work out your arms to paddle too. Subside does look like another great getaway too, though. I'm glad to see it turned out great.
Lol dude omg your reviews are crazy good man. Described perfectly what i felt from the demo. The full game seems even better (obviously). But that demo was just so fucking good. I hope all VR games look this clear now.
The demo made me so nauseous, but turning down the headset brightness seemed to remedy that for me. If anyone is having issues with nausea try that, the lower brightness leads to faster pixel response.
That's interesting, thanks for the tip. The flippers and weight belt items also help with nausea, since they allow you to move forward and ascend/descend using a button and analog stick, which makes the motion more consistent and comfortable (at least for me). Downside is you have to be able to play for a while to unlock them.
Buying this and alien,no question. All we need now is PlayStation to open up the AAA catalogue, and vr the lot . Do that and near everyone would buy a vr set
Might be a great way to face your fears. At least give the demo a try. It's a pretty small environment and the water's very shallow. Technically there's one shark, but it's very smol, and it doesn't do anything even if you poke it (except swim away).
If this was a legitimate survival game with base building, thirst and hunger, where you can harvest materials from the sea, from shipwrecks or from land such as wood, stone, sticks etc, and you can make a fire and cook food, and fight sharks off with spears like stranded deep or subnautica, I'd 100% be on board. From what I've seen, this is just a swimming sim where you look at fish.. can you even fight the sharks?
I'm excited for this when I get back from my trip but it seems like a wasted opportunity here to add some kind of fish photography element. I was hoping for some pokemon snap feels. It sounds like exploring for the sake of collectibles to...explore more.
played the demo for five minutes before I puked into the sweathelmet. Let's see if I'll try it again. :D Demeo Battles just came out. Sure this looks good but I bet it's getting boring real soon.
It's hard to explain what I mean. I'll try though. If your head is out of the water and you see like the rock poking out of the water, it looks far away but in only a few strokes you are close to it. It's like it's room scaled I think.
Why do so many VR games not have any arms or legs? There are only a few games in VR. I have played with arms and legs and it's fine. I have no idea why developers feel the need to only show hands.
To expand a bit on what Bryan said, getting a full body in a VR game and having it not look like a broken janky mess is very challenging for developers. Some have pulled it off, but it takes a lot of work. That's mainly because the game has no way of knowing where your elbows are, or how long your arms are, so they have to do a ton of stuff in terms of limiting joint rotation and coding in different rules about where your elbows go based on your hand positions. Otherwise it constantly looks like you've got broken wrists/arms, which can be more immersion breaking that only having hands. And for a game like Subside, dragging a body around that you can't properly control and trying to get it through tight spaces would just be cumbersome. I'd like to see more VR games add full bodies for our characters (ideally via some sort of third-party software so they don't have to waste a ton of dev resources), but in this case I think they made the right call.
@@quboidgames6702 Nope, the demo only includes the first environment and two pieces of equipment that you can unlock and then purchase with the coins you find around the level. Why do so many VR games not have any arms or legs? There are only a few games in VR. I have played with arms and legs and it's fine. I have no idea why developers feel the need to only show hands.
