Stay at home mom here. She is speaking facts. I learned this when I was younger, I helped my mom mange her money. I managed my money just like that too but my goal was to have a whole year saved of mortgage payments and 50% of bills like the light bill and water. Once I did me and my hubby started a family. I started managing his money and at first it was a little tighter than he would like but I wanted to save at least three months of bills including mortgage quickly. It wasn’t easy he had to do over time and side jobs. 😂 but he thanked me. Now our goal is to save up for retirement and for the kids.

I had to listen like 13 times to fully completely understand exactly what she's doing. This is awesome. Once I get back on my feet I'm certainly looking into doing this. Folks who do this are those who tend to have a difficult time keeping track and not overspending. Which is true of a lot of people. They use credit and get in over their heads. This makes it all very present for them and helps them. When they deposit the cash it’s all at once not sep deposits into different accounts. So for the cost of one trip to the bank each month and some risk by having cash around…they are able to stay on track. It’s like logging food or keeping a to do list. A system that helps you focus.

Not hard. Just take your bills individually, one by one, and divide it by 4 (which is 4 weeks of paychecks). That’s how much you take out of your check per week so you have the bill money set aside. For example:
Your phone bill is 100.00 per month. Divide it by 4(weeks)= 25.00 you take out of your check per week..
Then go to the next bill. After you have done this with each bill, then add it all up any the total is how much you take out per week do you have the money to pay your bills. If you don’t have anything leftover, or don’t make enough, you gotta start unloading things you don’t need.

This is now no longer the simplified version which is where were coming from. No hate on the moves, just dont say its something that its clearly not. Also, i stand by my first comment, if your budgeting why waste money on cute-sy binders to stock it in??? Thats a glorified waste of money if where worried about pennies, which op seems to be.

It's fascinating seeing this level of organization. In my country we've gone completely digital for maybe 4-5 years now (could be inaccurate since my memory is a bit fuzzy). Most people here haven't even seen physical money since before the pandemic and everything that requires identification (schooling, work, gov docs, insurance, healthcare, etc) requires you to be set up with one of our countries online banking apps. The one I use has a built in _savings_ function where you can set how much of your balance at the end of every month to be put away. It's really helpful for people like me who don't have good impulse control because it always appears as if I have less than I do and I'm very much an "out of site, out of mind" person so it's nice checking the savings and realizing I've gotten a decent cushion.

I had to watch this video like 4 times to understand that part where you explain the bill account and having 1 month in advanced. When I understood it, I realized how horrible the American education system is with financial literacy.
It should not have taken me that long to understand such basic words.
I couldn't, and still can't, afford to take classes I do not need for my degree. So, finance classes beyind what's required are out of the question.
I thank you. I'm also paid weekly, working for a small LLC in my town as it's all I can get without a completed degree. I don't make enough to save yet, but it's nice to have the thought for when we get more work and I eventually do make enough.

This is great as a first step or for someone who need to visualize where their money goes. Another way to do this is to have three accounts at a bank. The paycheck will get direct deposited into the first one. Transfer 1/4 total bill amount each week (if paid weekly) into bill account. then transfer spending cash to the spending account. An additional benefit is your debit card for the spending cash is more likely to become compromised but your bill account money would be safe. You could use the transfer account to save up money or start a savings account as well.

Calculate your monthly expenses and the total divide it by 12. That’s the amount you’re gonna save per month for a year (or the time you decide) to have one month ahead so you don’t have to wait for your paycheck to star paying your bills. Then when you get paid that’s for the next month expenses.

I always had 3 months living expenses in a no-touch account, with no checks or debit card on hand for that one. I also used direct deposit for my paycheck and put a specific amount into savings each payday. Never pass up on matching 401k opportunity, it’s free cash. You are NEVER too young to save for retirement. To build and maintain your credit rating, get and use a few credit cards, but NEVER miss your minimum payment each month. Making on time payments is how you build your rating. This will ensure you get the best interest rates when you purchase a car or home.

This is a fantastic way to get your budget and spending under control. One month is a great goal at first but I challenge you to not stop there. Keep saving until you have 2, 3, 6, 10 months saved and beyond. Seeing the money come and go (and not just in a spreadsheet) is the best teacher. I was taught to only take cash to the grocery store, that way you cannot overspend. This was difficult to do but I did it for years. Lastly don’t forget to set aside money monthly for oil changes, prescriptions, birthday/Christmas gifts, and dental visits. Many people think this is a really restrictive way to live but it is actually the opposite. If you save for entertainment too, you can spend with glee (within that planned expenditure). There is so much less stress when you plan how to spend your money so that your lack of money doesn’t weigh heavily on you.
