Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

I think it depends on what you want from your castle experience.
When you get to the top of Edinburgh Castle it's very military, one of the main buildings being the war memorial makes for a kind of quite somber vibe. I think a lot of tourists get up there and are like, um, where's the castle stuff?
Stirling Castle really delivers the old, great hall, people lived here, castlely vibe.
However, as an ex ticket chick at Edinburgh Castle I would suggest you investigate an explorer pass or membership to make the most out of Historic Scotland properties during your visit... Wait! I have a pamphlet! It has a map!

Stirling all the way! A wee side note. I had to laugh at the guide at Edinburgh Castle (not this chap) telling me that this was the original Stone of Scone on display in the Castle, "quarried in the hills of Perthshire"! When I said that it was supposed to have come from Princess Scotia who brought it over from Egypt it suddenly became her tea break and she dashed off😅. My English girlfriend commented she wasn't too impressed with the Scottish crown jewels, or lack of them, I had to remind her that old Queen Lizzy nicked all the good bits for her own collection in Buckingham Palace 😅. Nah, it's got to be Stirling, the best wee Castle in Scotland! ❤ Oh! apart from Airthrey Castle where I was born, about two miles north in the grounds of Stirling University😂 Keep the vids coming buddy, I always look forward to them!

Greetings from Nova Scotia. Visited Scotland with my daughter last fall and we toured both castles. Really enjoyed Stirling Castle. Found Edinburgh Castle a bit of a tourist trap but still glad we visited. The highlight of the visit though was our visit to Huntly Castle in Aberdeenshire. That is the ancestral pile for the Gordon Clan which is my Clan. Fascinating history. Would love to hear your spin on that history.

Bruce , you forgot to mention ,during your chat about sieges , that Stirling castle was attacked by The WarWolf , which is believed to be the largest trebuchet ever made, and According to modern estimates, the trebuchet would have risen to a height of 300 to 400 feet. It could effectively raid stones at a wall 200 yards away, hurled at a speed of 120 miles per hour.

When I was in Scotland recently, I only had time for one of these two castles, and I picked Stirling based on its historical significance and the fact that while it's definitely a major tourist site, it's not as busy as Edinburgh. I'm very glad I did, because it was the most interesting castle I've visited, and I've been to several in Britain, Ireland, and continental Europe. It's rare for so many buildings from so many periods to survive intact, or for restoration work to be so well done. And the views from the castle are truly spectacular. The only one I've enjoyed more was Duart on Mull, but that's largely because it's our clan seat. We had our gathering there, so the visit was an entirely different experience from a normal tourist visit. Definitely great views over the Sound of Mull there, too, and it looks great from the Oban - Craignure ferry. Edinburgh is most definitely on my list for my next trip, though!

If you want to see something specific related to Edinburgh Castle (crown jewels, Mons Meg, WWI memorial, etc), go there. If you just want to see a great Scottish castle and how it evolved over the centuries, go to Stirling. Lower prices, smaller crowds, and an ability to really look and ask questions.
It's the same for USS Constitution and USS Constellation in the US. If you want to see Old Ironsides; the oldest afloat, commissioned warship in the world, flagship of the USN, and survivor of the War of 1812, go there. If you want to learn about an age of sail warship with time and space to talk to docents, see Constellation.

I've visited both castles a few times. Edinburgh Castle is just huge and the views of the city and beyond are stunning. That said, it is very military, commercialised and there's quite a formal vibe. Stirling Castle in comparison is more homely, and the guides dressed in contemporary costume make the past come to life. You can imagine what the Court was like there in King James VI's time. I also love the Stirling Heads gallery and the tapestries are amazing! So, for me it's Stirling.

I visited both last week and by far Stirling is my choice. Never mind the fact that my direct ancestor laid seige and took control of it. LOL

You always make it fun Bruce. For a second there I thought this was going to be another "who's got the biggest"... and a bit worrisome that Ross was "un-spooned" in a debate could have taken a nasty fork👀. Cooler heads prevailed....See Both!

If a Welshman's opinion counts it's Sterling. In 1972 our family visited Sterling Castle and as we walked through the castle one of the wardens whistled a fair tune and beat time with his walking cane on a radiator. What joy for an eleven old who expected Scotland sounded like that.
    Edinburgh castle is ok though.

I’m a sinner! I have only visited Edinburgh castle (several times) and once watched the Tattoo live at the castle. … 😅 But I have only passed by Stirling castle, from a far on a rainy day.

A bit biased as my mum was from Stirling. I always felt it was the better castle. If Scottish history is your thing, Stirling checks all those boxes. Both are amazing places to visit however and I would encourage you to do both. Edinburgh to Stirling is a very easy train ride if you don’t have a car.
