With today's high prices I budget the same way you are doing. Sometimes it forces the grocery store algorithm to pop up sale options and other brands that are better and or cheaper. Walmart is now having a big sale on their flavored tuna pouches in my area for .76 per pouch verses their normal .98 cents. They are definitely on my grocery list for some yummy sandwiches this week. I love to add in a 14.5 oz can of no salt added petite diced tomatoes to my tomato soup. To add a bit of protein to my soup, I'll add fairlife milk vs regular milks or creams. 😊
There is a recipe that came from a Midwest living magazine, where you take a can of condensed tomato soup and jazz it up with celery, green pepper and onions that you cook in the microwave and then diced tomatoes with heavy cream and a can of chicken broth it is very, very good
My mom always made tomato soup with milk. In my teens, I worked in a restaurant where water was used. I fell in love and have NEVER made it with milk since. I'm an OLD lady now and would never go back. A little garlic powder & water - BOOM, SO GOOD!
I usually fold the corners, but if it's real cheese, you get the lovely burnt cheese crust, which I notice she made sure to gather up on the sandwiches. Fold for american cheese, let it burn with real cheese. Yum.
My mother bought cheap meat and saved money on groceries so she could buy us toys and clothes. My dad was in the military and only gave her so much money a month for groceries. She bought us things at the thrift stire on base or on the economy downtown. She pressure cooked her meals to make the meat so tender. She even pressure cooked the veggies and gravy.
I'm curious - when you do a $5 meal, for example, do you ever consider like 1 onion's cost? or if you are doing an Aldi challenge, do you use the cost for an entire bag of them? For example, my tuna casserole recipe, if made from Aldi, would be 0.89 for tuna, 0.73 for cream of mushroom, 1.05 for elbows, 0.63 for mac and cheese, and 0.73 for peas. Adding 1 onion would still not make this hit the $5 mark; however, a bag of onions would. Love your ideas! I came from a poor family, and my mom made some amazing food to feel all 7 of us. So do you!
My cheapest meals usually happen when I turn leftovers into something new by adding pantry or freezer items. I seem to spend the most when I actually go shopping with a specific meal in mind.
Fantastic idea. I also like using the seasoning called Salad Supreme. It's similar to Old Bay. Salad Supreme also taste good lightly sprinkled on scrambled eggs or an omelette when there are no other ingredient options because the budget is too tight.

Love grilled cheese, love tomato soup! My mom always used water in it, never milk, so that's what I got used to. Not a fan of the milk in it. I'm 70 and I still use water in it Lol
You have been such an inspiration to me! It took me back to my roots somehow we have evolved into a society that thinks that each and every meal needs to be gourmet. Well with the cost of groceries today, I know I can't afford that. Also, I'm getting up in years and still cooking for a family you have inspired me to get back to simple meals and using our seasonings to really ramped up the flavors by the way, we always call tomato soup that has dairy products in it, yum yum soup. Something that started in my childhood that I've never lost. Thank you and I cannot tell you how much I enjoy your videos keep up the great work!!! Hi to everyone in the family, the boys are growing up so fast!
Brooke, by chance in your city do they have a day old bakery store or they may call it the bread store? It's where bread is marked down and sweets as well and sent to the day old bakery to sell at lower prices.
We just started a RUclips channel hoping to inspire people to save money and cook from scratch, canning and gardening. Thanks for all your ideas! ❤lifeatthenutthouse
Brook I really enjoy your videos they help my situation a lot. Could you do a video using $5.00 a day to eat 3 meals and 3 snacks, I’m ona fixed budget and find myself with a $100 for groceries for the month. I’m running out of ideas fast. Thank you for sharing with us.
At dollar store they have pepperoni. Add some to the grilled cheese and use mozzarella cheese. Add some oregano, basil, garlic powder, and a very small amount of sugar to the tomato soup. Italian night for just 1.25 more. One cheap, comfort meal I love. Cabbage and instant potatoes with mustard and mayo. Hot dogs on the side. Cheap and satisfying.😊
Two of my favorite cheap “struggle”(comfort)meals are- 1 lb of of pasta cooked, add in 1 can rotel tomatoes while still hot and then slowly mix in stick of cold cubed butter to make the sauce-it costs around 4 bucks at Walmart, if you can get a clearance loaf of bread, makes it around 5 bucks and you should have another stick of butter to make some cheapy garlic bread. 1 can spam-as much rice as you need to stretch it to fill bellies. Crisp up diced (fairly small) spam and add to cooked rice. I top it with butter and soy sauce and green onions l (always have these In my pantry!)
We had some left over frozen garlic bread from a spaghetti dinner and made grilled cheese sandwiches with the garlic bread to go with tomato soup. So yummy!
We have made grilled cheese using hamburger buns. My husband and I were camping last summer and decided to stay a extra day. Used what we had left to make meals. It was delicious and will do it again.
I went to my local Independent Grocery store ( IGA) yesterday. They always have a good amount of clearance items early in the day. In the clearance meat cooler I found several packages of preformed Hamburger Patties reduced to $3.99. Each package was 21 ounces which is 1 and 1/3 pounds . I cooked two packs as Cheeseburgers, and two I broke up to go in Cottage Pie, Spaghetti etc - ALL to be frozen once cooled. THAT GIVES ME MONTHS OF MEAT FOR JUST $.19/ OUNCE ! A meal with three ounces will only me $.57 for the protein ! ! Love your videos . I am inspired by what you do Thank You
Yummy! I've used hamburger and hot dog buns the same way. Jazzing up your dinner may not always be possible, sometimes it's all you can do to just get it on the table. But, oh, when it is possible your options are limitless. Thank you, Brooke, for keeping it real. Your boys are growing up so fast. I had 2 boys with a girl between them. The boys went from boys to men overnight. One of the most important things I did was eat together at the table. We did have "make your own pizza and a movie night," I was on an extremely tight budget because I was a stay at home mom until they were older, so most of the time I used flour tortillas. My kids highlight was picking out their toppings and their choices often surprised me. It has been proven that a family that eats together at the table for at least one meal a day has a closer relationship. Watching your family brings back a flood of memories. My kids and I are still very close. Their ages are 37, 32, and 30. You and Dusty are doing a great job as parents in my opinion. It proves family unity can and is possible, even in today's world.
That's what we still eat often during Winter! I love you, your videos and appreciate your mission to help stop hunger. You're always inspiring me to be better. Have a great weekend and be blessed always, my Southerland Squad! xoxo
I am not worried BECAUSE Gods Word says..take no thought for tomorrow....We work had,pay tithes, give, and thank God everyday that today is a good day! 😊❤ Brook, Thank you for being so consistently encouraging.
I work in a school kitchen, sometimes we make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on hamburger buns, the kids love it and call them peanut butter and jelly burgers! 😂
My son has cooked in many restaurants. He makes grilled cheese extra special. He makes a mixture of parmasean cheese and Italian seasoning. Then, spreads the bread with Duke's and dips the Duke's side down into the parmasean mixture and puts it in the buttered pan. He adds the cheese and makes the other side the same way. Let me tell you... that's a delicious way to boost flavor and still inexpensive. Now, your soup is gonna be delicious with half n half!
i never heard of milk in tomato soup till last year when my hubby said he didnt like tomato soup cause i made it with just water tahts how we always made growing up i guess i never bothered to read the can now i must try it this way gotta try the grilled cheeses too :) he DOES look grown up lol
I use leftover hamburger buns for grilled garlic toast. Another tip is you don't have milk or half and half use the water but add about a tablespoon of butter it gives more of a silky texture kinda like the milk does. My preference is always going to be adding milk but ya know there are times you have to make do. I'm glad this week I have my stock of food since the electric bill for 2 houses was over $800 for 1 month and just got next month's bill and it's over $900 so looks like my stock pile will be being used till the bills go down!
"I look like a heathen."😂😂😂 I just really enjoy your personality, girl. You make me laugh. 😊 Thanks for all the work you do in putting all these informative videos together.
I bought Jiffy cornbread mix on sale, made a 9x13 pan of corn casserole (add corn, creamed corn, sour cream, egg), cut in squares and froze. Now when I make soup I throw two of those in each bowl...so good.
I had to laugh when I saw you adding half and half to the tomato soup. Our mom of four only used water but it reminded me when my son and his boys were living with me. Two went to grade school. I was out of milk and left them a note. “Sorry but grandma is out of milk. Fix yourself eggs or peanut butter toast.” I brought milk home after work. They ran to me and said “grandma, you had plenty of milk and it was extra delicious.” They had used my half n half and heavy cream. Too funny!
My dad would make tomato soup with milk a little pat of butter and pepper. Brooke all 3 of your boys have gotten alot taller especially Breydon and Kylen 😊❤
You look so beautiful in those blue glasses. They are so pretty. That was an awesome meal with a lot of food. We used to have that quite often with bread that was going stale and Campbell’s tomato soup with added water. Milk was saved for other meals. Your version looked delicious. When we had grilled cheese sandwiches, we always knew supper was served when the smoke alarm went off.
Got a recipe for ya! My mom did this once and our family have been making it ever since. We grew up poor still are but we had been wanting tater salad, we had all the ingredients except for the taters. So my mom made instant potatoes without butter just plain and added all the normal tater salad stuff and it was so good! The only difference was the texture smooth instead of chunky. Just make sure when you make instant potatoes you leave them a little thick because adding the mayo and mustard it thins it out.😊❤
Creamy 'mater soup & grilled cheese sandwiches is one of my favorite meals. I like dipping my sandwiches in the tomato soup too. So yummy! So glad I found your videos, your tips help a lot. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, and your family, with us. ❤

I love grilled cheese and soup. My first husband, though, wouldn’t have been happy with soup for dinner. But he did heavy work sometimes, so that’s understandable.
I LOVE grilled cheese and tomato soup (I make the tomato soup exactly the same!) but my husband is a “meat man!” There has to be meat at every meal as the main entree’. I can scour the ads for cheap meat but it is rare in my area to find that, even at Aldi. It’s quite frustrating as I’d LOVE to do $5 meals! Thanks for the inspiration! 🫶🏼 I’ll keep trying! 😜

That's wonderful. It reminds me of our"tuna dags" we make tuna fish sandwiches and use hot dog buns
❤ every time I watch one of your videos it makes me so jealous of your meat prices.. here in California it's ridiculous.. 😢
Love seeing those young men enjoying there MoMAs cooking 😊
I had to laugh when I saw you adding half and half to the tomato soup. Our mom of four only used water but it reminded me when my son and his boys were living with me. Two went to grade school. I was out of milk and left them a note. “Sorry but grandma is out of milk. Fix yourself eggs or peanut butter toast.” I brought milk home after work. They ran to me and said “grandma, you had plenty of milk and it was extra delicious.” They had used my half n half and heavy cream. Too funny!
If you want to add flavor to tomato soup.. try adding a little butter, garlic powder or salt and a splash of Worcestershire sauce. Yummy
Your little one is growing up, this is one of the meals my mom always made
Great video
Yummy 😋 adding Italian seasoning and garlic powder to grilled cheese makes a world of difference. So good!
My dad would make tomato soup with milk a little pat of butter and pepper. Brooke all 3 of your boys have gotten alot taller especially Breydon and Kylen 😊❤
another idea with the tomato soup and ground turkey plus some instant rice would be porcupine meatballs. tastiest served over mashed potatoes
I utilize my local food pantries to help with my grocery bill so I know I don't have to purchase certain staple foods and omg does it help
Me too really helps alot
Same here.
I love your new glasses! $5 dinners are still doable for sure...just takes some work. You look as cute as ever, Bestie!!
Just make sure when you make instant potatoes you leave them a little thick because adding the mayo and mustard it thins it out.😊❤
I always stock up on soups when on sale. Easy filing meal that can be great for those busy nights or extra tight budget times.
Creamy 'mater soup & grilled cheese sandwiches is one of my favorite meals. I like dipping my sandwiches in the tomato soup too. So yummy! So glad I found your videos, your tips help a lot. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, and your family, with us. ❤
You picked an all time favorite to make for an inexpensive supper✅
Have never made grilled cheese sandwiches on burger buns before, but definitely plan to give it a try the next time.
Love 💕 the challenge of making yummy but inexpensive meals as well!✅ Take care, stay safe and I look forward to your next video. 💕
One of my favorite meals!!!
Haven't had this in years. Thanks! Gonna add this to my meal rotation and start stocking up. I also do a meatless/chunky tomato spaghetti for a quick, cheap meal.
What the heck Brooke ? You look beautiful ! You are real, and your videos are awesome !❤❤❤❤❤
You know its good when everyone is quiet😊
Im in Canada and i dont think we can get a meal for $5 here 😢 our groceries are double here than what you pay in U.S. new subscriber here . I love these kind of videos ☺
I love grilled cheese and soup. My first husband, though, wouldn’t have been happy with soup for dinner. But he did heavy work sometimes, so that’s understandable.
I had one of your no meat meals last night. It was yummy. Leftovers tonight.
That's how Five Guys makes their grilled cheese so you are in with the big time!
That was incredible for 5 people!!!! Great job!!!
You can also use evaporated milk.
I love hamburger and hotdog buns. There is a sweetness to them. I grew up using milk in tomato soup.
I never noticed your mascara because I was admiring your glasses and earrings ❤ Are they cactus? So cute 🥰
Use mayo instead of butter for the grilled cheese you'll never go back
I LOVE grilled cheese and tomato soup (I make the tomato soup exactly the same!) but my husband is a “meat man!” There has to be meat at every meal as the main entree’. I can scour the ads for cheap meat but it is rare in my area to find that, even at Aldi. It’s quite frustrating as I’d LOVE to do $5 meals! Thanks for the inspiration! 🫶🏼 I’ll keep trying! 😜
grilled cheese and tomato soup is my FAVORITE....never heard of turning hamburger buns inside out...gonna try it
