Duran Duran always had a serious relationship with American fans since their huge breakthrough tours of the early 1980s. American angst first came up on the Big Thing album - where they juxtaposed the Freestyle House I Dont Want Your Love with the haunting Edge of America/Lake Shore Drive. With the Liberty album they featured Read My Lips opposite Down Town, and Venice Drowning - hard rock music mixed with a grungy West Californian sound. On TWA we got TMI, with Drowning Man - a continuation of the story.
From this point, Duran Duran begin to have problems with their American label - Capitol Records - who insisted they keep touring though 1993 and 1994, while writing the next album on the road. John Taylor by now lived in America, and Warren also lived in America - so it made sense to record most of their new album in Los Angeles; with John Jones mixing the tracks for 3 months (January through to March 1994) from several studios. Early songs included; Perfect Day, Watching the Detectives, Ball and Chain, Jeepster (the T-Rex song, later scrapped), Bob Dylan's Lay Lady Lay, and an Alice Cooper song (later scrapped).
March 24th 1994, Duran Duran appeared on the final episode of the cult British TV show The Word (series 5, episode 17); - featuring a new cover of White Lines, with Melle Mel, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five joining them on the stage. The band then added a number of last moment ideas after working with Melle Mel. John suggested they cover 911 is a Joke. Ball of Confusion, and I Wanna Take You Higher were also added. This made the flow of the album sound uneven, with heavy rock songs being interspersed with slow ballads. During the 1995 tour, the band played some of these tracks live with Melle Mel, and created a raw edge rock statement.
Reimagined
This year (2020) I got to hear "The Message" for the first time, and just like hearing PL YOU for the the first time; (which started me off on the Medazzaland Reimagined project); this time I wondered what the album would have sounded like as an "American Dream" concept album. The Demos for Thank You sounded good enough to be alternative takes, and I found a couple of live versions from that time which sounded unique and different.
On side 1 we have ROCK!
I agonised about placing The Message first on the album, but I really wanted a way to 'set up' White Lines, and for that matter the premise of this album, and give it a context. I felt The Message was perfect to introduce the rather nasty framework of life on the streets, even though this is not a song which is happy on the ears for most people. White Lines. The extravagance of Success, wanting to Take You Higher, the fierce Ball of Confusion. Struggling with Police, Drugs and the Law with 911 Is a Joke. Watching The Detectives is the darker side of 911, and I put in some police radio chatter into these two songs to make them into a 'major malfunction medley'.
On side 2 we find ROLL!
It seemed natural to flip over the record and go into a more thoughtful mood. Needle and the Damage Done represents the harm we all do to ourselves and others. I guess Crystal Ship flowed seamlessly on from that, although I originally had this switched with Perfect Day. I felt this reminded me too much of Trainspotting the other way around. Perfect Day feels totally different to the album version somehow, and comes into its own in the second half. The pull which 'keeps someone hanging on' is often a Heart of Gold. Then we get to the dusty, The Doors roadhouse blues version of Girls On Film/The Model. A slight echo of I Dont Want Your Love follows to lighten up the mood. Ending with the song Thank You - which always chokes me up!.. It is such an emotional song after this journey, and it speaks about LA, love, life, God, the World, and the audience listening... the fans.
I feel Lay Lady Lay would have been a great B-side to Perfect Day, but isnt on this album. Drive By is a daydream song about being stuck in LA freeway traffic, so this is replaced by Girls On Film as the 'cover of themselves' on the album.
I dont think this is an amazing transformation like my Medazzaland album project, but I'd say perhaps worth 7 out of 10.
We are so proud to have fans like you!!! Thank you
Love hearing Warren jam during the message... Dom could never get close to that
Dom es un amateur al lado del gran Warren Cuccurullo.
Pure curiosity brought me here. I couldn't imagine Duran Duran doing a Neil Young song. Needle and the Damage Done
They did Heart of Gold as well.
Needle and the damage done is the best version i was not aware till 2011. And adding Perfect Day and Success. White lines is awesome to with the way the bass is played.
Man! Success is a great song,!!!! I am just now discovering their version. Love it! Makes you want to dance with a hydrcodone!
THIS IS ABSOLUTELY SHIT HOT, THANK YOU.
That Grls on flm is amazin.
👏💗💗💗Grrrrreat album!!!
Fabulous!
Awesome post man! TY!
Can't beat the Chauffeur!!!
Hi man, didnt know you were following this channel. Hope you saw my Medazzaland Reimagined project? Yes, I guess I was never taken with Drive By, but the original Chauffeur is one of those classics which is timeless, romantic and haunting.
@lifeschool, your Medazzaland Reimagined project has this message. "Video unavailable
This video is not available." Thanks
Would it be possible to get this from you on a CD, as well as the reimagined Medazzaland?
On CD would be a bit too close to 'commercial release'. I dont have the rights to this music, and I'm not sure the sound quality would improve if it was on CD Vs RUclips. I also dont have a working CD/DVD anymore, so couldn't if I wanted to.
NO "PL YOU" THEN.
You are looking at the wrong album. PL You was Medazzaland. Check out Medazzaland Reimagined. ;)
@@lifeschool SO SORRY, MY MISTAKE. IM LISTENING TO ALL YOUR DURANTASTIC UPLOADS, AINT LOCKDOWN FUN.
