I am still in love with Duran Duran...*sigh* This sure does take me back... all of it, everything... just perfect. Roger and John Taylor... mindblowing.
@@gumusluk05 They have been. Critics panned them all the time. Their fans and actual musicians know better. I know some musicians in their 50's and they say that Duran Duran was the most underrated band. They love the rhythm section the most. John and Roger were great. Andy was when he played with Power Station because he could show off his guitar solo skills with that style of music.
Actually as a bassist John is highly regarded but as a musician and ironically as the founder of the band who has made the greatest contributions to the band, he is overlooked.
Four years before I was even born. That gets you thinking. Even though you think you're special, the world was the world long before you and will be long after you.
Nick is so sexy as always! Love Andy’s high-pitched background vocals on “Rio” & love the audience members jamming to what was to be ultimate greatness! 💕
As a engineer this sounds like right off the soundboard...Their studio tracks really highlighted the bass tracks....Duran Duran were an awesome group...
great footage and sound ! it must have been one of their first shows on the other side of the Atlantic..they seem highly motivated!! I was 8 years old that time and already a big fan
Amazing audience ! Great dad dancing! I guess this was one of their second series of US gigs (?) hence the age group of their audience before MTV got its dirty hands on them.
I was a "duraniano" back in the day, that magic 1 and 1/2 years span between late '83 and the Live Aid when Duran Duran were the most crazily followed band in Italy... and they NEVER bothered to come and play live! Someone even shot a movie here about that craze. I was in intermediate school and we had to suffer from the view of tour after tour after tour of Spandau Ballet and NOTHING from our beloved Durans. Every girl had her favourite, my friend Marta loved Roger, Enza drooled over Nick, and mostly all the others were after Simon and John. I still think that it was the most exciting time of my life. Then life itself went by, meaning Duran Duran "played" (not really the right word) the Live Aid and well, I simply outgrew them. I never went to see them on their reunion tours in recent years. Of course I still have their 33's and still totally love them, and still feel what I felt back then, when every thrill, shiver and breath was somehow tied to their music. And I love this concert, even with Simon jumping cluessly off beat, and forgetting to introduce Roger on the Girls on film coda, and yeah, watching that scattered bunch of 30 somethings that look like 60 somethings drink their way through new year's eve.
This is the first time I saw Duran back in the day. It was on some cable show. My friend Cindy had cable, we all went to her house and watched it at 11pm. I was in a rock band for years and I was 19, this band changed my life. Caused me to stop playing metal, and immediately cut my hair and buy white pants! Lol

What is it with New Wave bands having such great bass players? Like redefining the instrument level bassists? Taylor and Hooky from New Order come to my mind mostly. Tina Weymouth too.
Really great concert and they're all on FIRE!!! The energy is fantastic! Yet... Roger sometimes looks a little like getting instructions through his headphones and trying to hit the right parts of the drum kit ;)) No offense Roger, you're great!!! Btw: Their 2nd Album and that much hits! Wow!!!

Roger Taylor, most underrated drummer ever. Solid rhythm always and precision. His skill is way above many of the thrash metal and harder rock genre drummers who just bang away loudly to get attention. Great drummer and all around cool guy.
ABSOLUTELY ! The rhythm section of Roger and John ! They both played with the dexterity of Fusion musicians with out EVER stepping on each others toes, or any one else's in that band. Bad Cats for Sure !

This was also before low wattage LED lighting too. Those can lights back in the day were HOT. Like, cook your skin if you touched them hot. That is why they were always sweating so much on stage back then.
There was an analogue version of simple auto-tune back then, as well as very effective de-essing, compression, and most effects that are available today. I would think that, by this point, Duran Duran had made enough money to afford those sorts of rack effects and/or the venue had them. Regarding this video, there is plenty of software capable of auto-tuning instruments and vocals, correcting timing errors, de-essing, etc even with final stereo mixes (look up "Melodyne"), and a lot of it can be done quite subtlely. They were so beautiful that nobody noticed the musical quality and professionalism of composing playing and singing, a very complete group that reaped many successes
Nobody noticed? Are you nuts? They’ve always been huge! At least during my whole life! It was the music for me first and then the looks! Yes they’re handsome as heck but amazing musicians and masters at their art!
Totally Agree! I can never understand how most critics skip over John Taylor when talking about great bass players. They were heavily influenced by bands like Chic (you can tell with the bass) and of course kept working with Nile Rodgers. I have seen them live many times and they are always an amazing show. One of my favorite bands of all time.
@@deepakrama Yes. The interplay between John Taylor and the guitarist on Rio reminds me of Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson of Rush. I love bands that feature a prominent bass.
Priceless and nearly 40 years in the business outstanding thats why im alife long fan, i knew back then they where brilliant and had something especial, i first heard them on the radio in around 1980 a couldnt wait to see them on top of the pops couldnt believe it sounds great and first saw Simon le Bon wanted to marry him i though he was the most handsome man on earth, Duran Duran are a very underrated band Simons a great song writter they should be in the music hall of fame.
Watching this a few days after DD were finally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I was 12 when they did this concert. I was lucky enough that my parents let me see them in '84 when I was 14. My first concert ever and I'll never forget how magical it was. Such electricity. They're still so amazing live, even 40 years later. So lucky to have grown up with DD. So glad they are finally getting the accolades they deserve. What a fabulous band.
@SNORKYMEDIA John was self taught BUT he's more proficient player than anyone who learned formally that's one of many things that so genius about John. He wrote all his basslines and the music himself long before duran was signed by EMI. Bernard hadnt even met with John yet, or involved in the making of any duran's albums.
How could anyone have called them a boyband? Fascinating to see them play this gig. Great musicians that get overlooked way too often. Their sound was so much more original and creative compared to the usual rock bands that were big at the time. Simons dancing hasn’t improved much though ha
They didn’t get any respect from the “true musicians” because they were a dance rock band and were “pretty boys with cool hair.” The story’s different today, though. People are waking up to what the fans have always known. Dx2 are an amazing group of talented musicians.
John Taylor is total beast mode on bass. It's his beautiful rock solid timing and syncopation with always hitting the root note on the one beat. It's just the driving force behind all their music.
@@playbassken Yes, the thickness in the mids is what it gives that bass it's character. Nowadays most bassplayers have a lot of lows and highs but no mids...Btw. I do own an Aria SB-700 which is the model that John used on their first EP. It has that thick growly tone!
in 82 I lived around the block from the Palladium but could not get tickets so I just hung around 14th street to listen to the concert in the alleyway . 2 years later saw them at MSG,I was 18
Man these guys are fucking awesome players. I can't believe how good they sound live. Just crazy good. You can tell they played a lot to get where they are. Bass lines are crazy. Drums solid. Guitars are making the songs so much better and great backing vocals. Keyboards are very unique. Simon's voice is fuckin strong and just like the album.
@@morkygorky Simon's voice, like it or not, is iconic to the DD sound. It has pleading quality to it that is endearing to this fan and many others and no one else sounds like him. There are some DD songs I can't see anyone else doing justice as he owns them vocally. I will say that there are a few DD songs that I would have liked to hear with Andy's voice more out front (Careless Memory comes to mind) or maybe have Andy switch off in terms of leading vocals with Simon on a few songs to add a different flavor. Andy's early solo career showed off his voice more and IMO he had good enough vocals for this too have seriously been considered on a few tracks. His backing vocals added nicely to DD songs as it stands
@@needahandle I must admit that Simon Le Bons singing is better NOW than it ever was! - Shame John Taylor isn't singing, I liked his 7" for "Nine and a half Shades of Grey".....
@@morkygorkyThis reminds me of the story where U2's guitarist Edge was told by his GF that Bono can't sing, dump him. Yup, Bono and Lebon sort of proved all that wrong in an epic way as they became icons.
John, Andy, and Simon are wearing sweatbands as they jump around on stage. Roger's got sweatbands too as he pounds the drums. Nick is wearing a spacesuit, with perfect hair, standing still and pushing buttons. LOL
It's now August 2022 ( thats 40 years after this concert!) Duran Duran just played at MSG in NYC and they still sound great and after all these years Simon's voice still sounds great!

The play on words is fun- Rio means river, Rio spelled with an accent over the "o" means she laughed (in the past tense, not the past perfect tense), and Rio is the name of the girl the song is about. "Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand. Just like that River twisting through a dusty land." When my high school Spanish class had to chose names from a list of common names used by Spanish speakers, I chose Rio- a name not on the list. My teacher allowed it only if I put an accent over the "i" so as not to confuse it with river or she laughs. · Reply · 44m My all time fav song.
@@andreamariterickson5885 Great analysis! The only wrong thing is that "Río", with the accent (tilde) actually means river. Greetings from Argentina :)
Duran Duran, one of the greatest NEW WAVE band of all times, in top of their game, throwing a epic new years party to a crowd that didn't deserve them. Oh, the injustice! Amazing display of everything, those were the times!!!
AMEN! NYE in NY, an iconic venue at MTV party!!! They were on top of the world this night and it shows! This was their moment to grab the "world domination by 1984" dream and they knew this filming would take them beyond the drunken execs at the party...A great moment in time captured.
Andy and John gave Duran Duran some balls along with the solid drum playing from Roger, creative soundscapes on the keys with Nick and the pure sounding and distinctive vocals of Simon.
Everyone comment and praise the bassist this and drummer that but without the genius voice of Simon the band wouldn’t even exist. The guiatarist was replaced and the band still goes on. If the bassist and drummer are replaced the band will still go on. Try to replace Simon and we’ll see if the band goes on. Genius and unique voice
The singer is the frontman and is always irreplacable but often not for his or her voice but because they are the "face" of the band. Personally, I think that Simon Le Bon is the less talented of all of them
I have always been of the opinion playing a guitar before moving to bass affects how you see and play that instrument. I agree John Taylor is an example of that.
OMG! amazing! Never seen this, looks similar to 1982 hammersmith concert. Andy Hamilton should be a member of the band for all his conributions over years! He joined them for comeback in 2004. Loved this, thanku x
Hope you are doing well. I’m going tonight to the United Center for their concert 8/20/2022. Had tickets back in ‘87, 10th row, Milwuakee, WI. Fast forward 35 years later 🎶🎤🎹🎸🥁
Why don't there exist any more good footage of the early years of this band? It's outrageous there's so little from this early, most vibrant era. It's just like how there's no footage of Van Halen and Ozzy with Rhoads. Its ridiculous. Thank you so much for posting this rare, great show. Just amazing

Tonight in Chicago, they’ll play six of these songs from 12/31/1982! Almost 4 decades later the set hasn’t changed much.

yes. and still doing quite well. new album in the works!
Totally 💯 still excellent as well which is wonderful 💕
Nobody noticed? Are you nuts? They’ve always been huge! At least during my whole life! It was the music for me first and then the looks! Yes they’re handsome as heck but amazing musicians and masters at their art!
are you a 12 year old girl? This band had no musical acumen whatsoever, there were pants.
U speak the truth, GODS !
Man Duran Duran is the sh**!! This bass player is one of the reason why I fell in love playong the bass
John taylor is THE MAN
You are correct....great bass playing! Exquisite tone, too.
Best Bassist in the music industry!!
It is 2023, and I still love Duran Duran! I'm 56 and proud😊
56, you should know better then. This was a band with no talent other than image.
I am 55 and I am proud too. I only listened to the singles back then, but now I want it all...
it's 2024. i'm sooooo fan too !!!! love DD forever :D
It’s 2024, I’m 50 and I agree with this statement.
57 here and still kicking it old school!
John Taylor with awesome bass. I still think your bass part is one of the best ever
Can't get enough of Save A Prayer. My all time favourite song from my all time favourite band! This one is historical
best songs of all time is Rio. Too Much Information, Come undone a view to a kill , tonight united, pop trash ,sunrise reflex
In my opinion for this being 82' DD were in a way ahead of their time. This concert sound damn good. Lead singer is perfect for this .
That's why they were called "New Wave" at the time. DD was way ahead of many bands.
no, new wave was 1979-1980. This was the aftermath of New Romantic.@@MrSean03839
Simon Le Bon. Could you get a less charismatic front person? And have you noticed how tiny his feet are?
1984
It’s amazing how well Simon can sing, even when performing live and dancing around!
Powerful lungs!. People dont realize how hard that is to do and still sound good
And he still does at 60 something years old! I just saw them live this year of 2023 and they’re still amazing and Simon sounds exactly the same!❤
right out of the gate, Duran Duran's bassist is phenomenal...I never realized! Wow!
He's a tasty funky player. I reckon he is the Key to their sound
John taylor is also the key to their success.
@@mshadow6147 also wouldn't be Duran Duran without Simon's vocals!
Yeah but there wouldn't be duran if john never started the band at the first place
@@mshadow6147 absolutely true! There wouldnt be duran duran without John Taylor!
And to this day they are still not inducted in the rock n roll of fame which is a joke anyway.

ak bass no. doubt
He played so dominantly in the early 80s.
@@marlasecrist9537 John Taylor is a pure genius
Watching this a few days after DD were finally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I was 12 when they did this concert. I was lucky enough that my parents let me see them in '84 when I was 14. My first concert ever and I'll never forget how magical it was. Such electricity. They're still so amazing live, even 40 years later. So lucky to have grown up with DD. So glad they are finally getting the accolades they deserve. What a fabulous band.
That bass is legit
Should be, Bernard Edwards of chic invented it and taught it to him
@SNORKYMEDIA John was self taught BUT he's more proficient player than anyone who learned formally that's one of many things that so genius about John. He wrote all his basslines and the music himself long before duran was signed by EMI. Bernard hadnt even met with John yet, or involved in the making of any duran's albums.
And so was Neurotic Outsiders.
@@SNORKYMEDIA he met bernard during the Power Station time, years after these songs were performed loll
The greatest band of the '80s, by far! Man, those guys can play. Saw em again live, a few years ago. And they still rock!

CANNOT believe this album/preformance is going to be 40 YEARS OLD this year. Holy Mother of God.
They called them boyband because they were all hot as heck and people were jealous that they were that hot and could also play amazing music.
Love this band always have❤
John Taylor is total beast mode on bass. It's his beautiful rock solid timing and syncopation with always hitting the root note on the one beat. It's just the driving force behind all their music.
Yup. Should get more props
He certainly is and love that tone. It is so thick in the mids.
A beautiful beautiful man. Favorite bass player of the 80s for sure.
bass in Hold back the Rain is one of the best ever, and John Taylor is master true
@@playbassken Yes, the thickness in the mids is what it gives that bass it's character. Nowadays most bassplayers have a lot of lows and highs but no mids...Btw. I do own an Aria SB-700 which is the model that John used on their first EP. It has that thick growly tone!
They single handedly kept the white pants industry alive!
Yes. And only with white shoes.
Hahahahahaha I admit I have a pair of white pants and a white jacket BECAUSE of Simon
Oh yeah, Simon looks very sexy with those white pants!!!
@@marialemos3121 Only Simon can pull those white pants off...I had a pair of tight white pants back in the day... lol
Yeah, look at Nick's pants, really cool.
Andy Taylor as backup vocalist. Wow! Awesome!
He’s an amazing singer. You should listen to his solo albums!
Andy Hamilton is also performing backup vocals.
Outstanding! The Taylor's are all full throttle. Takes me back.
Yeah..no kidding great memories....!!!!👍✌🇬🇧🇨🇦🇺🇸👍✌!!!!
Simon looking a bit like a young, energized Elvis.
John Taylor and that bass.

in 82 I lived around the block from the Palladium but could not get tickets so I just hung around 14th street to listen to the concert in the alleyway . 2 years later saw them at MSG,I was 18
Holy-moly, they were so freakin' hot..musically, aesthetically, kinetically!
Man these guys are fucking awesome players. I can't believe how good they sound live. Just crazy good. You can tell they played a lot to get where they are. Bass lines are crazy. Drums solid. Guitars are making the songs so much better and great backing vocals. Keyboards are very unique. Simon's voice is fuckin strong and just like the album.
just a shame about Le Bon's voice - their songs were great but the squealing vocals..... tsk tsk
@@MrSean03839 maybe she was referring to the LOOKS factor 😆
Amazing JT bass line!!
John, Andy, and Simon are wearing sweatbands as they jump around on stage. Roger's got sweatbands too as he pounds the drums. Nick is wearing a spacesuit, with perfect hair, standing still and pushing buttons. LOL
Well, being Neatness Nick. To much moving around might create wrinkles! Lol. He does give some fabulous smiles tho!
Lily but Nick's smoking habits throughout the yrs.... :/ wrinkle-maker
OK, as fans we would like DD logo sweatbands, please.

Amazing Roger Taylor on drums! Solid! Perfect sound.
So good!
indeed although Stewart Copeland was my drumming hero at the time.
Go Andy!! Miss him in DD.
Always best with the orignal Fab Five.
Duran Duran la mejor banda de todos los tiempos gracias a sus fans y sus grandiosos temas y videos sin olvidar la fabulosa voz de Simon Le Bon
Andy had a good voice too
John's voice is good, too.
It's now August 2022 ( thats 40 years after this concert!) Duran Duran just played at MSG in NYC and they still sound great and after all these years Simon's voice still sounds great!
This band has a lot of future potential.
bianchi1885 This is from 1982 ....it’s 2020 and Duran are still performing

I don’t think the audience realized they were in the presence of greatness.
Love that John had to remind Simon to introduce Roger heheheh :P
i dont think the flat audience appreciated what was in front of their eyes...this was epic raw duran duran wasted on a ny crowd
I was thinking the same exact thing.....

Duran Duran's rythhm section was so powerful. Man, they could support any frontman... Love their early years...
Rio has such a busy and addicting bass line. The muted notes he doesn't hit are just as important than the ones that ring out
Yeah, just love the way he tickles them!!

My all time fav song.
The only new wave part about them is Nick’s synths... and with that in there, they are the total package
When I was 9-13 years old they were my favorite! Now I'm 46 years young, time flies bye.
48 here, I was just riding my bike it seems yesterday in jr high and seeing these guys on MTV. Yes, time is a cruel motherfucker.
50 here. I also like Kajagoogoo (1st album).
Yup, seems like yesterday. They were a Truly talented and Unique band. And SOOOO CUTE!!!
Troll Mctrollerson I think about that all the time. I’m almost 48 and next thing you know, it’s over. I’m afraid of growing old.
I am the same age as Simon...... but my favorite has always been Nick since 1981... "Planet Earth" 😍
Im watching this in 2021 and remembering how they never got credit for their musicianship, which is a shame because the band was tight!
ABSOLUTE PURITY ON VOCALS. THE FINEST CUT DIAMOND VOICE IN THE BUSINESS. DONT MESS WITH LE Bon. 🙌🙏
Tony Hadley and Martin Fry both up there with le bon inches genre. Great generation of male vocalats (Adam Ant, Freddie Mercury, list goes on).
He did mess up at live aid though.
Roger is killing it!!
John, Roger and Andy make a good rhythm section. New Religion is tight.
Steve Steele To. Duran. Duran. I. like. missing. persons
Andy and John gave Duran Duran some balls along with the solid drum playing from Roger, creative soundscapes on the keys with Nick and the pure sounding and distinctive vocals of Simon.
Damn, Roger Taylor, you are a stud, you awesome drummer...😍🥰😘
Eighties had the BEST music. 14 months before I got to see DD for the first time.
Personally, I think that Simon Le Bon is the less talented of all of them
John Taylor started out as a guitarist and it shows on his cool bass lines. The sound engineer needs a slap though!
being a rhythm guitarist prior, doesn't equate to being a great bass player.
I have always been of the opinion playing a guitar before moving to bass affects how you see and play that instrument. I agree John Taylor is an example of that.
@@dookiebot yeah it does. I played guitar first. Now I play bass I use a pick instead of my fingers
OMG! amazing! Never seen this, looks similar to 1982 hammersmith concert. Andy Hamilton should be a member of the band for all his conributions over years! He joined them for comeback in 2004. Loved this, thanku x
