Another great video, with more to come I hope, my only suggestion would be some close up vision of you bike and trailer. That was a tough trail, well beyond me, but hats off to you for having a crack at it
We will teach you the way of the darkside, the first thing you need to do is throw out all tent pegs ! Then you head down to a local hardware store and pick up the longest wood screws you can find, you use a socket or Allen key to screw the screws into the ground and you use them at tent pegs, it does not matter if the ground is rocky or hard, you just screws it into the ground and they never pull out with the wind or if someone trips over it. And yes Urals still rule !
Awsome ride there Steve, well done to you, like the phrase, still fit for an old un, all in the mind, my school friend and I cycled around Scotland with a trailer on one bike, took turns with that, nothing stopped us, mind you we were young uns and mighty fit, love cycling even now(e bike) at 76 years young, stay safe and enjoy, Cheers
Two wheels, human power, two wheels petrol powered and 4 wheels diesel powered, same destination completely different trip. Something to be said about the slow option. Thanks for sharing the trip so far Steve.
Love your attitude to life. I went to Cultana 3 times and I would descibe it as the most miserable peice of earth I have the misfortune to tread upon. Never knew it was surrounded by such beautiful country. Happy Birthday.
Cultana…the Military always seem to always find the most inhospitable, outta the way places to train in. That’s because nobody else wants the land. It’s good for nothing else. Thanks for the birthday wishes.
The trees of the Flinders are quite different to what you would expect, been all up around the Flinders as a kid during the 70's with mum and dad and four wheel driving for a long time it's an awesome place.
Steve, I think the steps/bridges over the fences were called a stile back in the olden days. I've never been through the Flinders Ranges before, although I've been past it a couple of times after coming down the Strzelecki Track. All things being equal I'll be attending the Border Run next year and do the Off Centre Rally which is in the Flinders a week later. Then back up the Strz. That trip will probably be my swansong as I'll be pushing 75yo by then and my riding buddy is even older.
The OCR is at Arkaroola...I've been there a couple of times. It has interesting Geology all thru the Flinders. Interesting back story to Arkaroola. Privately owned. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Great video and adventure, loved the pronunciation 😆😆. Great to see the old mine, my great grandfather worked there. My only complaint is you got me homesick 😃👍👍
That's a tough slog! Good on you for doing the trail and showing us what an e-bike can do. It looks very rocky... glad you didn't break anything when you fell. I bet there were times where you wished you had that BMW handy? 😉 I look forward to the next video...
Gotta do things that make you realise you're alive....cycling thru the Flinders will do it! I do talk about Death in my next vid...gimme me about a week.
Cracker video and aerial footage Mr Bly. You certainly get around this wonderful planet. Never used toe clips off road but from your experience they dont seem very practical in your current enviroment. You mentioned late Autum so you've been sitting on this trip for some time. Looking forward to the next installments over a beer and the Christmas break.🎄
Hi justgjt, I had over 600 video files to review when I got back...it takes a while to review them and give each one a title. Painstaking process and very laborious. Next vid out in a week or so.
I like that you ride on the wrong side of the road to blinman so you can see what's coming, that's how told my kids a grand kids to do out where i live
Aloha Steve..great video as always brings back memories of my time on the MT 12y ago....i need to revisit this epic ride again !!!!!! Your right about slime it OK but never great...better sealant is Orange Seal or Stans both can be used in tubes even though made for tubeless we use it hear in Maui for the tourist rentals works well! keep making the great videos .....i hope you will make it to the US for a ride one day we have tens of thousands of KM of great biking!
I live on the trail at kapunda most of the year .met many who have suffered on bikes .and many who have walked both trails .brave man with a trailer .I've done 80 thousand kilometres with my dog in them .they suffer .and done 15 thousand with a ebike .all good till ya flat .and got hills .in sand and jaggered rocks ..have fun .it's worth it
are U riding at the moment mate .might be able to catch up if U stay at Kapunda for rest .I'm the gardener at van park there .headed back soon .plus .it's when the ride gets hard ..lol to the coast is hard slog .but .there is no hills higher than 3 ks long .just hundreds of rollers 😉
could not believe how clean the city looked no bums doing drugs with tents and garbage strewn about, nice to see you back on the bike again, sorry about the fall. at our age they are a little harder to come back from
I find that the best pedals for mtbs are the ones with a flat on one side and an spd cleat on the other. For tough terrain use the flat side. You should be able to instantly twist your foot out of the cleat if you need it.
Hi Steve from Philippines, I was in struggle street in the early eighties, picked up stomach bug in Blinman, crook as driving back to Perth. So glad coming down Greenmount seeing the lights of Perth..Flinders Ranges, beautiful place.
Great little adventure, you never cease to impress. Well done. Wilpena is not a meteorite crater (I spent years thinking it was!) Its just the result of massive rock folding.
Wow more used to seeing you on the bike! You are so inspirational and truly living the dream! I recall you said you have retired? A new way of seeing SA! I might try to get my friends out of their Jeeps to do this!
I admire your grit mate. Absolutely love your videos, I have learnt a lot from you thanks very much. I am planing to go to Perth from Tassie next year. Just another old bloke on a gs. Would love to meet you one day. Happy trails.
Love your work mate. You need to come to York peninsula and walk/ride the York. It's only 500kms, you should be able to knock it off in a couple of days. 😂 It's fairly flat but the wind could be challenging. If you do come, call in and see us in Coobowie, love to catch up.
Goats were used for meal and milk/cheese. They were also used for dragging small water carts in rural towns where you had to get water from the town bore or water tank and there were no water connections to the dwellings. Goat skins have been used for clothing/boots/harness making for centuries as well. They were/are also used to clear out unwanted vegetation as they will eat a lot of fodder other grazing animal's wont. So, for those isolated communities' goats made a lot of sense as buying fodder for animals in drought would have been extremely expensive and goats simply ate anything in front of them.
Great progress in these first few days Steve. When you first showed us your recently-aquired war wound I was sorry for you, and wondering how/where it happened. 2018 I drove down from Darwin via Woomera-Roxby Downs-William Creek-Maree then down across to Blinman & Wilpena Pound. Camped near the Chinaman Hills. Special region The Flinders. As always, really enjoying being taken to experience places I cannot go to, as well as those I've travelled before. Thanks Steve. Merry Christmas stay safe. 🤠
Glad you did the mine tour. I thought it was fantastic when I did it. You should have stopped into the Blinman pub as well, it is very historic. Thanks for the video. The Flinders is a wonderful area. If you are going back with a 4WD club check out Willow Springs Station and the SkyTrek drive.
Hi Michael, I had visited Blinman a couple of times before and visited the pub then. The Mine Tour is something i hadn't done and i'm glad i took the time to do it. Thanks for watching. All the best for 2024. 😀
Awesome trail, beautiful scenery . I agree , those pedal clips are dangerous, i went back to normal strapped pedals , much safer , anyway , thanks for the great video, cheers.
Hi Steve! That goop is great stuff, where I live the bindies are terrible. Saved me walking home a few times. Don’t think ide like those clip in shoes at all. I always wore good walking runners. Bring on episode 2! 🍺🍺
I ride a r1250gs and follow your travels, I’m also an avid cyclist! The Mawson is on my bucket list and I’m aiming to ride it over 5 days, South to North though, done plenty of research and know it’s a tough gig so big kudos Steve. Hope you enjoyed your stay at the caravan park in my hometown Tanunda. Safe travels mate
I had to look over my shoulder when i read this...how did you know i stayed at Tanunda??? Are you watching me? 5 dayz...gutsy effort if you pull it off! The bus will not be operating from 2024 (Adelaide to Copley or vice versa). Good luck.😀
That was heavy going Mate. ditch the pedal clips, they are fine for the "Tour-De-France" no good in your environment. Than you for posting, looking forward to the next one.
Goats were introduced to Australia for meat and milk , not much else you'd bother bringing them over for . Goats are a lot easier to keep going in harsh undeveloped country to gain meat and milk out of than cattle , hence why you see so many of them all over the country . Metal food storage box would be to put your food in so rats and mice don't get into your food at night while staying there
Looks like a great trip, apart from your mishap. I have been to Flinder's Ranges before, but by car, amazing place. You are certainly doing it the hard way, well done. Have you thought about taking a solar panel with you. These days they are fairly light and compact, Coupled with a small MPPT charger to boost the voltage, they can charge your battery in a reasonable time. Looking forward to continued videos.😀
Probably just as easy (in this case) to manage the battery and plan the 'fuel stops'. A solar panel would be handy for crossing the continent. 250km between fuel stops out there. Next vid be out in about a week.
I really enjoyed watching this video Steve. I rode the Mawson last year on the way to Alice but, apart from a few photos didn't have any film of the excursion. So it was really interesting to see it again through your eyes. Especially, that really gnarly section through the Flinders. As a chap of some antiquity(68) i did find those 50 odd creek crossings a tad exercising(bordering on type 2 fun). Although, I would have readily opted for pedal assist later, for example on the Oodnadata highway, having to find places to recharge the battery especially on those longer stints (sometimes 2 or 3 days betwixt power-points) would , for me, add complexity and bother to the endeavor. There must be some pedal assist folk who have done long, remote rides, where the power-points are far apart so i would be interested to know how they managed it.
@@kenbaker347 Hi Ken, the ‘experts’ would probably start talking solar panels etc. I don’t have the inclination to go down that path. I’m glad you enjoyed your journey down Memory Lane. Thanks for watching.
@@mongreldogproductions Thanks for your response Steve. I do use a small solar panel to recharge phone and lights, on longer rides but i'm guessing i'd need a fairly big rig for a pedal assisted ride. So... i guess, for now , i'll continue with my less complicated analogue energy system 🙃
was wondering when you would post another video. a cycling vid in austrailia! really surprised you tackle this trip with cleats. I would have changed them out for some flats. your brave! I'm guessing you'll be posting this trip every couple days as you edit the footage / trip. one thing, glad your not crashing on the motorcycle adventures..😁, just the bicycle excursions
Great stuff mate - interesting to see how dry the country is. Having done the Munda Biddi I'm guessing the next route for you to conquer is the Hunt 1000 thro Kosi? Thanks for sharing the journey!
I hope you will do a summary of your trip at its end Steve, i have numerous questions, like range with the trailer, range without the trailer, output of the pedal assist motor, load trailered etc etc. Keep enjoying it, as we are. Do you own a house, and if so, why ? You are never there !
Hey Steve I did this with my hubby a month before you. Great footage to relive the trip ( and trauma of first day!). That was the toughest part of the trip for me..
Yeah, I carry a lot of shit. I have to cross borders, have 2 seasons worth of gear (cause Autumn in SA is different to Autumn in WA), carry all my camping gear, food, clothing, parts (for emergency repairs), charging cables for bike, drones, camera gear and phone, plus an extra pair of socks and jocks (just in case) but if you compare my one bag (plus the small one on top which carries my drone and bike charger) compared to traditional panniers or several items on a 'bike packing' set up i think you'll probably find it is much for muchness. Besides, I'm the Scmuck who has to hump it all; believe me, if i didn't need it, i wouldn't pack it. 😀
@@mongreldogproductions Have to call you the Quartermaster from now on, or the Trails Mobile Mechanic. Some mad blokes do it in 48 hours you know the whole 900ks. All they carry is a bottle of water and some Tuna oh to be young again. They dont even drink beer. A pretty sour strange lot they are.A couple of years ago a bloke did it there and back. Came through here with Heatstroke on Friday came back Wednesday with Hypothermia! Oh and they dont take money with them either, very tight they are. Its some form of personal challenge I guess. Been there done that cant see the point when you dont stop to look around. The MTB boys only look down 10 yards ahead of them.
Slime does help if you remove the double gees fast (Hopefully, not too many.), add a bit more air and keep riding the bike for a while. That's been my experience. And some of those trails look very similar to those old Apache trails in southern Arizona/New Mexico. "Keep yer eyes peeled, pardner."😉
Good job champ.. if you shipped a spare battery you would have been laughing. This was shared on the SA ebike group so you should get some fresh visitors.
It varies so much...I nurse it all day just to make sure I've got some power left to get me over the snotty stuff at end of day. I pedal the bike a lot more than most people would think. It is still physically challenging, E Bike or no E Bike.
Yes, the variation in power usage is difficult to calculate on those tracks. I've got a cargo ebike and the battery usage changes with weight. Good stuff.. Enjoying it.
25:58 Goats were given to the families living in railway sidings along the train line to provide milk and meat as fresh cows milk was not available for the babies of the workers so goat milk was a suitable alternative because the country was too harsh in places for cows.
You are correct the last of them that I know of that were issued by the South Australian railways were in the 1960s. along the line that went from Adelaide to Perth. Railways crews working at the Wirrappa and Pimba siding had them.
I literally had a slimed tube rupture inside my condo where I park my ebike what a mess.I hate the stuff those little green valve cover caps can GTH. 🥴..I have the same type ebike with the battery in the down tube, made by Electric Bike Company have an extra battery fits nicely Basil panniers & I hit a park by me Florida's nature coast it's 8300 acres..Between that bike and another I put 50k MILES combined on them last 10 years. I always click your videos last few years same intrests..outdoors, motorbikes, bikes just picked up a 1 owner alpine white BMW 5 series taking up all my time playing with this German thing..amazing cars
I want to do do the Mawson but Genesis Transport have shut down so there is no bus transfer to or back from the northern end of the track anymore which makes it a nightmare.
Hi person X, join the MawsonFB Page…there are a number of options that may suit. If not, put out a call for assistance. People are only too willing to help. Regards.
The trailer draws a lot of attention (especially from blokes in SEAsia). They are intrigued with the rear suspension set up and the general engineering that has gone into it. That trailer (BOB, Beast of Burden) has done over 24,000km and is my preferred way of travelling. Low centre of gravity, packs up for travel on the aircraft, easy to hitch and unhitch on and off the bike. Winner, winner!
Love the fact you crossover to cycling regularly. You see the world differently. Lots of the cycle haters in 4wd should do the same.
Toyotally agree. Also one aquires a nasty wake-up re consideration for ALL road/track users/twavellerz
Steve you’re a machine, so many adventures.
Thanks for allowing us mere mortals to tag along.
You're welcome...glad you enjoy the Channel content.
Also Steve if you want the bike to walk for you, just hold down the minus button and the bike will walk slowly
I use those long screw in pegs when I'm 4WDriving. They are pretty effective. And yes, Urals still rule (according to you).
"You're a better man than I am, Gunga Din". 🚴♂️
Thoroughly enjoyable. I love my ebike, (65) and confess it has reinvigorated my enthusiasm for the open road viewed from a saddle. Keep on…
Glad you enjoyed it!
You’ve impressed me again Steve,, you’re a tough bastard for a young fella
You are certainly an adventurer. I think you were born a couple of hundred years to late. I could imagine you blazing trails. Good onya👍😁
Goats for meat and milk, similar stuff up to all the other ferals we allow into our beautiful country. Thanks for the video. Ray.

In another couple of vids, you'll be introduced to a bloke (Kenny) who was riding a recumbent. He was 90! Bloody amazing.
Two wheels, human power, two wheels petrol powered and 4 wheels diesel powered, same destination completely different trip. Something to be said about the slow option. Thanks for sharing the trip so far Steve.
I am a man for all seasons...thanks for watching.

I would have struggled on some of those tracks with the R1200. The Ebike was a more sensible option but still tough going in places.
Arrr. So satisfying to watch an old bloke knock him self around for fun !
Well … actually it hurt me to watch almost as much as it hurt you to do it !

Oh kudos to you for this. Bloody great stuff. Love to be there.
Glad you enjoyed it
Really enjoyed that. I've done a couple of rides, not as tough as this one though. Looking forward to the rest of it. Keep upright.

We don't bounce as well as we used to...
RM Williams boots and toe clips and straps worked for me in that type of terrain.
Ironic that you mention RM Williams...I stayed in the town of his birthplace, Jamestown.
Brilliant video, we have happy memories of Wilpena Pound and it’s unique trees and animals. Can’t wait for the next episode. Hope your arm is better!

Thanks 👍

Amen to that.

Nice work, looking forward to the rest of the series.
More to come! Gimme about a week.

Lovely watching MC
Another great adventure to add to your list.
Glad you enjoyed it
was wondering when you would post another video. a cycling vid in austrailia! really surprised you tackle this trip with cleats. I would have changed them out for some flats. your brave!
I'm guessing you'll be posting this trip every couple days as you edit the footage / trip. one thing, glad your not crashing on the motorcycle adventures..😁, just the bicycle excursions
Hi John, next vid out in about a week or so. Ho, Ho, Ho!
use a stretchy bungy cord for your tent, that way when there are rocks you can strecth it out in places where there may be not as much rock or no rock
Good advice!
I enjoy watching all your different types of adventures.👌
Glad you like them! I'm a versatile kinda guy.
Tougher that what it seems. The drone views the perspective of distance.
As a South Aussie, your pronunciations are amusing. Well done though, from a new e-biker!
Potarto, potato...gimme a break!
😂😂😂
Great stuff mate - interesting to see how dry the country is. Having done the Munda Biddi I'm guessing the next route for you to conquer is the Hunt 1000 thro Kosi? Thanks for sharing the journey!
I had to Google Hunt 1,000. BUGGER THAT! 😂😂😂. That would kill me. The Munda Biddi nearly did! I might stick to Rail Trails from now on.
@@mongreldogproductions If I remember your video correctly you did the MB with an acoustic bike - you'd love it all over again on an ebike :)
Hahaha...yes, i do have a house. It is nice to return home and sleep in my own bed occasionally.
Next vid out in about a week or so.
food storage was for mice protection?
I live on the trail and Ive never seen anyone with as much gear as you have.
@@1mmickk you’ve pricked my curiosity…where exactly do you live ‘on the Trail’??? If I had known, I coulda called in for a beer.
That is nuts!
Thank you (I think)
Slime does help if you remove the double gees fast (Hopefully, not too many.), add a bit more air and keep riding the bike for a while. That's been my experience. And some of those trails look very similar to those old Apache trails in southern Arizona/New Mexico. "Keep yer eyes peeled, pardner."😉
Thanks for the tip!
So this is what you’ve been up to.
Good luck mate , you’ll get there !
I dont have a lot of downtime...always something going on. I'm usually home long enough to produce the vids and then I'm off again. Watch this space!
Good job champ.. if you shipped a spare battery you would have been laughing. This was shared on the SA ebike group so you should get some fresh visitors.
Thanks for sharing the vid…I hope they enjoy the journey.
@@mongreldogproductions don't want to take credit for sharing, someone else did but I've watched 5 of your videos now and enjoyed them greatly..
Steve, your barking mad 🚲🔋🙃. 👍🏴
Guilty as charged...
10👍/10👍 as always. The solivigant lives on HHOOOw RAHhaaa, Sergeant Major, Hhoo Rah
What distance do you get on the battery on that last stretch?
Children were allowed to choose a goat as their pet; they got to ride it, but they had to milk it. I think that lasted up to the mid 1900's.
Glad you enjoy the Channel content...thanks for watching. 😄
That's an excellent adventure. Thanks for sharing. Is that a mirror on your wrist or simply the cover for your smart watch?
Hi David, that’s a collapsible convex mirror…very useful when riding on major roads. Glad you enjoyed the vid…next one out in a few days.
Great video. Thanks for sharing
Regards.
@@mongreldogproductions Thanks. I did look at that. It looks like the solution for now is a bus to Port Augusta and to begin cycling from there.
@@person.X. Angorachina Tourist Village will run a shuttle from PA I think…it might be worth investigating.

old news but i have 'Trail pedals on my mountain bike, much bigger platform than most clip in pedals you can pedal without clipping in (shimano pdm530)
Emu's have the best camouflage and they're tough as old boots, that's why they kicked our ass in '32 🤕
How does people react to your trailer. I'm toying with the idea of making a trailer for my postie bike, and maybe one for my grandson.
Some pronounciation issues 😁Good stuff so far 👍
I tried lol.
If you get a chance, visit and stay in Melrose. New tracks have recently opened and are fantastic fun.
I'm back in Perth...maybe next time. 😀
It’s pronounced ANGORICH NA Keep up the good work.
Hahaha...I've been waiting to be corrected. Potato, potarto. Thanks for watching.
Yeah, cycling is dangerous stick to the motorcycle 😂
Good advice...I think.
Better you than me. I'm RAEME, give me a vehicle and an orange esky and I'm fine.
A second class ride, is better than a first class walk.
