"Lola had to go through some sh!t" One of the best summations of this disco ditty ever. I was born into a Barry household, with a ‘70s housewife mother playing his records all day, so not sure whether I’d be a fan otherwise. I don’t particularly care for love ballads, and even my wife derides “gushy” music----but she’s a Barry fan as well. However, as others have stated, in my 51 years on the planet, I've never heard a more beautiful love ballad than "Weekend in New England," and it certainly must be one of the greatest love songs ever written/performed. This sort of music comes down to sincerity, which Manilow has in spades. You don’t see that today. I’m not knocking millennials, but I am knocking the music industry that mostly feeds them drivel. Only raw, heartfelt sincerity could pull off a line like “With you, there’s a heaven, so Earth’s not so bad,” and you knew he truly means it.

I was lucky enough to see Barry Manilow in concert in 1987. He was one of the most amazing showmen of that time! The scenes, prop, costumes and lighting were simply amazing! Neil Diamond in concert was awesome too, but Barry Manilow concerts were simply over the top entertainment!

Barry Manilow was one of the great talents in the music industry. He could sing, write, compose etc. I grew up on him along with many others. Back in the day he also wrote numerous famous commercial jingles. In one of his stage shows back in the day he did a melody of them to.

Fun fact: in the 1980s there was a made-for-tv movie about this story, with Barry Manilow starring as Tony. It then ran as a stage show for a couple of years. I'm sure some footage is still out there somewhere.
Manilow's music is just so singable, I always loved it for when I felt like singing, or it's good for those bad nights on occasion when you're having a pity party and you need a good cry lol. I saw him in concert once at Radio City Music Hall, he puts on a fun show.

When you reacted to the line, '...she lost her love' with a "NO" and you arms up in the air, young me was with you. I'm not sure when I first heard this...maybe the eighties...but we all sympathised with Lola. There seemed to be a calypso vibe around the time of this song, because there was also the Peter Allen song, "Rio de Janeiro" that was also hugely popular. I reckon you might enjoy that one too.

  • @joolzessam1824

I have always like Copacabana. It not only tells a moving story but you get to hear what happened to Lola decades later so it become the narrotive of someone life rather than just an event.
