As an Indian who grew up in America, Karan Johar’s films have been landmark in helping me and many many others like me find our Indian identity and actually be proud of it. Cult films like kabhie khushi kabie gham, kuch kuch hota hai, kal ho na ho have had a greater impact on my life than can be described. They are literally my comfort place because I associate them with the happiest part of my life - when I was 5 or 6. They were family movies, that everyone sat in the living room and enjoyed and there’s just no comparison to that feeling. As I grew up, I was shocked to learn that people in India don’t actually appreciate this man or his work. It’s saddening because he’s genuinely talented - his movies may not be for everyone but not every movie has to be ground breaking in its approach, some of them can just be feel good movies that take you home. The reason there exists a grand and gorgeous image of Bollywood around the world is because of this man - something I can deeply appreciate because for a large part of my life growing up, people just looked at me and thought I come from this dirty slum called India. So sure, realistic cinema is appreciated but there is also an audience that appreciates the beautiful part of things.
I’m sorry but this is why 2nd generation Indians in other countries are so ignorant about India and have bizarre mythical ideas about the country. It’s nice to have something in the culture to celebrate but if this is what people have built their cultural identities on it’s totally a fail
@@dia606 If the fact that people in India are able to own big houses, wear nice clothes, and have grand lifestyles is a mythical to you, maybe it’s you who is failing.
@Robert C Mark Hamesworth so everyone who isn't rich, effluent or nris are dirt and dust? Horrible mentality. And if you cared about your Daddy Johar so much, why have his last 5 movies flopped, didn't you go support it, rich guy? You're just a pahjeet pretending to be white 🤣 🤣
That's funny as Indian living in u.s. I associated with t.v show fresh of the boat. Somehow bollywood films were aspirational and artificial but it's fun to watch cringefest like this directors movies.
It was hilarious. So many truth bombs. Such self awareness. Loved it. And yes, as I have said many times before as well, Shah Rukh Khan is the greatest star ever. No one like him. Let's enjoy this time when we can witness the boundless talent, the unmatched charisma and the mesmerizing overwhelming aura of this once-in-a-thousand-millennia super duper megastar ...the SuperGod called Shah Rukh Khan. Love n more power to Khan sahab. ❤❤❤
in Bollywood. Don't mean the world over....in india. and even that is questionable. Older stars like Rajesh Khanna or Sanjeev Kumar were bigger stars and better actors.
Only in Hindi belt , I don’t think srk has the same fan base otherwise his movies would not have flopped. Gone were the days when ppl would hide their true self now everything is dissected in social media and everyone understands no one is god and all are human beings. This is the truth. It takes 1 sec for any person to pull him down from the pedestal . Audience of today should be given credit for this
@@playstationaccount4473 RK & SK including other legendary actor/actresses of golden era were belonged to Hindi film industry not Bollywood ( parody of brand Hollywood)
I don't care what people nowadays say but I have loved Hindi films. I have loved Karan's films. I find films directed by Yash Chopra, Adi Chopra, Karan Johar have so much sincerity, honesty, innocence n purity that they just work for me esp the ones starring Shah Rukh Khan. Some of Karan's movies i loved - Kuchh Kuchh Hota Hai, K3G, My Name Is Khan, Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, Kal Ho Na Ho ( he was a writer on this one) , Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.
My name is Khan is a bloody gem and maybe his finest film of all time. It was also a very necessary social drama and it hit home. There are very few films in Indian cinema that are made with an empathetic lens towards a Muslim character.... Kudos to Karan Johar for making it!
When he speaks... It's like you are captured to listen to him... Speaks with such emotions... enthusiasm... You can see the words with pictures in front of you... I wonder why all actors mentions they love when Karan narrated them a movie ... Hopefully some day those narrations too would be captured and will be shown to the world. I am sure those too would be impeccable
32:40 - completely agreed. Reviewers are so biased. If KGF, RRR etc had come from a Hindi filmmaker starring Hindi actors, they would have been lynched for no rhyme or reason. Maybe it's just because of too much competition n negativity in bollywood. I don't think there's that kind of negativity in South. I hope this gives way to more positivity n everyone can just celebrate Hindi films like they do all other films.
South just makes better movies be it commercial movies like KGF, RRR or classy movies like GGVV, 777 Charlie they've got all bases covered. There's absolutely nothing that Bollywood has and south doesn't except Drugs and pan masala maybe 😆
That's not true. Movies like Singham, Simba and heropanti wouldn't have worked then. Machoism in the movie doesn't mean the screenplay and dialogues have to be lousy and cringy. And that's what is happening in Bollywood of late.
Nonsense, most of Salman Khan's filmography is south Indian remakes, Shahid Kapoor revived his dying career by doing the same, should we even talk about our SINGHAM Ajay? All of them were celebrated by the reviewers aswell as the people, stop pretending like Hindi movies are completely different & pure.
Look how these people in the reply section are defending the South Indian movies. They proved my point. People in south love their movies n stars and there is no negativity. Even if they don't like some of their South movie, they won't tear it apart by giving devastating reviews or abusing the actors, directors. In bollywood, it's totally opposite. If people don't like a movie of if the movie did not live up to its hype they wud go out of their way to ridicule every single thing about the movie. Fans of one star would fight with fans of other star as if their life depends on it. Reviewers are easily bought by rivals to spread negativity about a particular movie of their competitor so that a perceived negative word of mouth can be spread to bring down the movie. So, all of it happens that affects Bollywood. Also, you wouldn't find any hindi film viewer going out of his way to defend their loved films, contrary to what these people in the reply section are doing.

Love his self-awareness, proves why he's been so successful as a marketer and producer. He's an ok director but the fact that he realises that and knows his target audience are either NRIs or aspirational folks, speaks a lot about his experience. Yes 90's n 2000s were about flashy films directors like him made, but he is smart to know a K3G will never work today, and thus his sharp intuitiveness about the market.
He always gives me some positive qoutes in his interviews i always write it down somewhere & for sure i use it in my life... This guy is very intelligent director and made Indian films globally famous for Indian diaspora especially in UK and US. His first two directorial works are done very cleverly. This kind of work needs big picture vision. Almost whatever he has directed became hit with few exceptions. And he is the one to make Shahrukh Khan big and famous in international world.

I can’t believe people made him feel that way about his movies to the point he stopped creating films. Honestly as a fan of your movies growing up I could tell your films apart by just watching them without any knowledge about who made them etc. They also have an aura ! ✨✨ and I’m so glad that you said it doesn’t have to be a buffet. If filmmakers just focused on their best genre we’d always have great movies to watch. It’s truly evident when you stick to what you believe in.

This interview literally made me introspect, the part where he said “connections made need to be furthered by communication and emotion” was like dammnn good
Stardom is recognized by the very fact that in a shot of a leading film critic and a film maker, your eyes are still drawn and your imagination running wild about a superstar, Sri Devi, who rocks a massive section of the backdrop. That seems a bit absent today.
Karan Johar is the brand ambassador of promoting pan India films from south . He promoted Bahubali vey well and admires Rajamouli ,Shankar, Mani Ratnam ,Prasanth Neel .He openly talks and appreciates good films and concedes the fact that Bollywood is falling behind and gives reasons behind.
Don't think so as those "pan india" films are the run of the mill but better made and performed. All this guy did is take advantage of their stars and its fan base and got more money with nationwide release. Every telugu and Tamil big budget spectacle can earn 500 crore in South India itself, with rest of the country it got 2x the money. Other than that bahubali, rrr or kgf can earns it audience on their own since it's just another entertainer that audience post pandemic will find worth spending money on. There'll be more success from big telugu films because bollywood has lost its creativity in making even big budget entertainers as it did in the past and audience are giving chance to actors from other industries. With ott one can get used to seeing other industries so bollywood doesn't have the luxury of being exclusive now.
@@Finnola but if SSR had not approached karan for bahubali 1..it wouldn't have collected even 50 crores in hindi version..as he distributed and gave screens with influence of dharma productions...now u see the case of vikram and charlie..both were great films but no one gave many screens because there is no big production house for distribution..

One thing gotta love about Karan Johar is his self awareness and his unapologetic attitude ! ❤️ Looking forward to his new films and kofee with Karan'snew season ! Yes it's frivolous, fun and gossips but still need not be taken too seriously! Let's enjoy it for what it is.
You're not indian bruh, if Karan Johar films gave you your "Indian Identity", stop claiming you're indian
KARAN you should do a podcast show on bollywood, it would be lovely.
Yes pls , ngl his talk are entertaining yet can learn sm about it .
@@saisha8565 spot on .
I still remember Hrithik mania back in the early 2000s, no one in this generation has that kind of stardom.
What he said about stardom vs popularity is absolutely true.
Yaa it's actually true
🔥
😎😎 h
true in bollywood not in South.
@@Sagar-sb2wz even if not at present but surely after the present stars would age up we would find a similar trend in south too
I don't care what people nowadays say but I have loved Hindi films.
Agree totally! It's a favourite of mine too. Karan really surpassed himself there
Agreed!
I like the fact that Mr. Johar put Anupama on the spot by saying what she too thought about him as other people did/still do 🙌🏽
This human speaks his heart and i have immense respect for him ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Have grown up watching his movies, his show, his interviews...He is truly gem of a person.
Karan Johar needs to direct more films like alternate years💖💖💖💖Please.....Direct again with Srk, Rani, Kajol and Salman😜🔥💯💖🥂
Omg yes pls
he played important role in popularising Bollywood outside India in ,90s & 2000s with the movies he made with SRK..
He gave my childhood the best movies. Which I will cherish for my whole life. ❤
Sridevi is the background is simply amazing.
So true ....love her
32:40 - completely agreed.
And South audiences roots for their stars not starts online wars joining an army created by a witch name Kangana
Binge watching all his interviews . He is so eloquent and says whatever is inside without mincing words and he has always been so fun to listen to, does not shy away from calling spade a spade and is so effortlessly charming. More interviews with him please…
The best part of this interview is Sridevis poster ! Sri looks so beautiful !
Whatever anyone says, I loved Ae dil hai Mushkil and watched it over and over again as I have a similar story…as for Karan, his interviews itself are more interesting than most Katrina Kaif movies. I can hear him all day long. He is entertainment. Period
So true... pple made memes of Varun jumping from the train to save the kid in coolie.. so badly criticized... and then i saw the applauded and raved RRR... and i am what ??? 😂😂😂😂 and yes if bollywood had made it pple wld hv lynched
Who cares what people think about him. He is a proud son, producer, director and father. Rest is noise.
one of bollywood's most aware film maker and one of bollywood's most sensible journalist... a terrific combination
I think I might have cried a little when he talks about his regrets off not having a life partner. Kind of got me.
Kjo you are an icon to many of us. Firstly, you may not have said the three letter word, but we all know and love you for it. You have mainstreamed so many conversations for so many of us. Your movies may not be "appreciated" in the current times, but all your movies have had fantastic moments. Keep doing you big boy.
I love Karan… he is really humble and honest .. all the best Karan !! Totally agree with him
About stardom… new generation actors are just very casual and easy going…
19:30 🙌...That's the stardom of SRK 👍..He's always magical 💥
Tnxx
Totally unrelated but....Can't take my eyes off Sridevi in the background. Larger than life star she still gives me goosebumps. Ya ya nice interview as well .
Absolutely I was just looking at her when the zoom out.
I just loooove watching Karan Johar interviews; he's the best speaker in Bollywood (coz SRK isn't competing with anyone).
“You make cringe, but you still binge” awesome said. Should be tag line of your biography
Ae dil h mushkil is my favorite film and I absolutely love his movies whatever anyone say as a 90's kid K2H2 and K3G was iconic.. And I can listen to his interviews again and again. Can't wait for koffee with karan how much anyone deny it has been guilty pleasure for lot of people including me 😅😅
I'm a big big fan of koffee with Karan. I was so sad when karan pranked us and said there will be no more seasons. Also I wanted Ranbir and alia in the couch together and see their chemistry!!!
I am actually delighted that Koffee with Karan is continuing.
Sridevi’s picture from Yashji’s Chandni is my biggest takeaway from this interview :)
Happy Belated Birthday to Karan Johar! Also, the huge Sridevi Ji banner at the back is fabulous!
He always gives me some positive qoutes in his interviews i always write it down somewhere & for sure i use it in my life... Just admire him,his work ,his sense of humour, his fashion sense, his confidence in himself & self acceptance which is so rare in this tough world whoz always ready to pin point your flaws...kudos to you Karan :)
what i like about him his that he is brutally honest also . i liked the part where he said there people i dont like and certain people do not like me also .
Anu ma’am Karan Sir, this was such a smooth watch! Not only as an audience but also as a small part of the film faterinity, there was a thing or two to learn from it❤️
Thank you for watching Aparshakti!

I'm so happy to see positive comments about KJO on comment section. He deserves this.
Karan Johar is far more intelligent than most people give him credit for.
I have always been a fan of KJ’s interviews - he certainly has the power to make an interview engaging. His brutal honesty is a quality to admire! Thoroughly enjoyed this one! Thanks to Anupama for asking such thoughtful questions, more power to you both!
completely agreed
Extremely honest. Witty. Supremely intelligent. Hope he finds love
It's so interesting that one thing common between Karan Johar and Ram Gopal Varma is their common love for Sridevi and Amitabh Bachchan. Would love to see their joint interview one day.
Karan Johar is absolutely incredible! I truly agree with so many of the things he's mentioned here.
P.S. Also looking forward to watching light hearted, illogical, laughable, joyous movies.
Karan has amazing knowledge about marketing and distribution of film. he has potential of being great director. I love his personality and so his movies.
Might not like his movies much. But I just really really like it when he talks. So much fun and genuine everytime.
I find KJo so consistently authentic ... His eloquence steals the show ❤️
Hehe, find him to be a typical Gemini - saying something and doing exactly the opposite as long as he can get his way…
He's a rare and amazing storyteller. Every small incident he narrates from his experience in his interviews is so vivid and has the right amount of good humour.
I love KJO! so much, he is just amazing and so passionate about his craft, Dharma and Karan has given Bollywood one of the best films. He is still so irrelevant and so Lovely so talk to. ❤️❤️❤️ whatever the world says, totally love you kjo 💕
SRK ♥ : The Star post liberalization India 17:00 to 20:30
Karan johar interviews are always very interesting. He is the only one who can speak about his personal life, his life as not critically acclaimed director and amazing producer.
Being a fan of his movies since the day i can remember and even a bigger fan of karan, the person as i grew up and got to know him from his interviews! I agree with everything he says except that he doesn't believe his movies are any special. KARAN JOHAR MOVIES IS LIFE AND I WILL LOVE YOU FOR LIFE!! Your biggest fan from Sri lanka!
My eyes were only focussed on the supremely beautiful , talented and only empress of Bollywood Sridevi, rest all was background music by someone I and am sure many don't even care about. Huge respect to YRF for honouring Sridevi with such huge wall. Love her ❤️❤️ 🧿
Greatest Legendary Superstar Sridevi Ji image in background is just beyond of words
Shah Rukh Khan truly is THE LAST OF THE STARS. SRK defines STARDOM

31:36 'You don't want to be in a Buffet when you are an A-la-carte' ! Well said, so to say not one of my favourite indian filmmakers :| .. Kuddos to You being You and respecting the A-la-carte's of Indian cinema :)
Love Karan johar ... no matter what people say but whenever he gives an interview it's so human and you relate to it ... he is like the long-lost friend that you catch up with, without any inhibitions about who he is, its always a pleasure listening to him ... wishing you a very happy 50th Karan Johar ... and don't worry folks are going to always talk about u and you are always going to be relevant ... but one thing I would tell you as a human to another human ... being relevant to self is more important and meaningful then being relevant to the world for the wrong made up reasons ...
I don't understand this over intellectual thing that has come into cinema...
Cinema can be anything, it's just need to be enjoyable by the audience it's getting catered to.
I love KJo's movies....bcoz i like cinema... about romance, good clothes, good location, melodrama and everything but I am also the person who ll watch Dil chahta hai, Great Indian kitchen, Swades etc.
And I must say his interviews are always fab. Always adds two new words in my vocabulary 🤣
100% agreed. Not sure why people are running behind logics and intellect so much.. Cinema can be light, glittery and take us to the world that we can only dream of
Love his honesty! It takes courage to publicly disclose who you really are!
I would just love to appreciate the positivity in this chat. This is the first time I have seen something awesome being said for karan johar and I loved it idk why ❤️😁
It is always a joy to watch Karan speak. He is so true to his heart and so human . Love u Karan . May god bless you.

We love you Karan, no matter how many people try to tarnish you. My childhood was made better thanks for the films of Dharm. your haters in the industry secretly wish they were in your films. Eagerly waiting for KWK, hopefully Shahrukh comes this season

Hes a total entertainer 🤩... Love this guy...really enjoy all his interviews... Wishing him the best for his upcoming Blockbuster BRAHMASTRA 🙌🤲👍
Sweet Karan Johar. He has literally matured in public eye. We love him for his movies, fashion sense, flamboyance, sensitivity, sensibility and insecurities. If I could be a match maker, I would set him up with Ekta Kapoor. Success and accomplishment, fame and creativity, family and traditions. They can give it a go. But of course only they know their best.
He is truly turned 50 in his body and mind which is called maturity, yes,he is so real on so many ways...feel happy we have some great people in bollywood
