ANDRE THE GIANT - Thursday, Week 74 (19/08/2021)

  • Today is a strange day. A day that scrambles my brain. Because I've been on a path of detachment for quite some time regarding my paintings. I've tried to teach myself to see them all as byproducts of the exact same act. A daily ritual that promotes self-acknowledgement thru the repetition of painting. And I think we've been faithful to those principles in our project. We've now done 74 Weeks of videos (almost 370 videos) upholding those beliefs. But today something happened. A painting just grabbed on and pulled at my heartstrings. And it wasn't a painting of my mother, or Dani, or Samu or Fer. I would've expected that. I thought I saw that coming. No, it was a painting of Andre the Giant's wondrous torso. And I feel I genuinely LOVE this painting. I honestly thought saying something like this would betray our project, but I now know that a painting can feel absolutely singular. So, with your permission, I'm going to treat this one painting, this one only, differently. Because I feel I HAVE to. I invite you all to watch and listen to today's vid where I try to make sense of this feeling. I also did a portrait of Andre which I'm super, super happy with and you can also check out the prelim drawing for Andre's chest painting where I was trying to figure out the proportions that I wanted for the final painting. I don't know if this painting is better or worse than the 370+ paintings we've done for our project, but it just feels different. And I think I have to honor and acknowledge that sentiment.
Donations to ourpaintedlives.com of $20 or more will automatically enter you into a monthly raffle of a special daily painting all throughout 2021.

"A memory is made up of so many things....I'd rather go with the memory. " Love that you explore our remarkable human psychology when you discuss your workings as a painter. Way more important than whether you are using Winton or Holbein paints. Thanks once again.

Aaah that's amazing to hear. I feel proud that you've struck a heartstring unknowingly and can be so honest about it.

I agree - not trying to re-live magic. It’s like going on holiday to the same place and trying to conjure the same good time. I watched Big Daddy v Giant Haystacks on youtube a while back because for the same reason as you - it was magic as a kid and the big challenge in the UK. It was still magic because the crowd was still the same crowd and wound right up. Loved it. I love this one too and maybe you should keep it Thanks, NIck.

I didn't really think it was particularly special when I saw it on ig earlier, but with the backstory I changed my mind completely. Very cool piece and I love the nostalgia surrounding it! Also the pinkish highlights at the center of the chest are really captivating!

This is GREAT! I just sent your site to a young gal pal of mine…telling her there is so much you can learn from you. Looks great!!! Great narration by the way. You’re such a great talent. I’m glad I discovered your page here. Best wishes always.

Really love this painting, especially the way the focus fades outwards and just the interesting proportions of the subject himself, really cool!

not a fan of WWF at all but love this painting. The skin just came across gorgeous. Can we get this painting up in the down loads, glad to have the portrait that you did of him but would love to get a closer look at that belly :) You and Danni are AWESOME for doing this. It is how I start my mornings as I get ready to work. PS there was no link in yesterday post to the download.

Dark Crystal is OK. I bought the DVD for my kids, then they outgrew it. I played it last year & enjoyed it, especially the music!

Amazing video! I'm sure you've answered this somewhere else but, how do you prime your paper before oil paint and also how do you keep it from buckling from the moisture? I'd love to just spontaneously paint on paper but whenever I want to I never have enough prepared etc, so frustrating!
Also, as someone who was spellbound by dark crystal as a child and rewatched as an adult, it was absolutely still wonderful and not "cringe" (although I love your perspective on preserving memory)
