What Can I Learn From Rembrandt - Friday, Week 38 (16/10/2020)

- We finish our "What can I learn from" Rembrandt week with a simple yet confusing word : Flesh. Let's rip the bandaid quickly - we're NOT talking about the light pink hue that sadly has been associated with this term. We're talking about the soft tissue underneath our skin that covers our bones, with some of us being softer than others (I'm going to blame 2020 for that because why not). I think Rembrandt understood perfectly how to use paint to depict our plumpness. There's something palpable about his paintings. You can sense the moments of the body where bone would sit right underneath the skin, making it feel taut, and you can also sense other areas where there was mushyness (I'm sorry, I'm running out of terms to describe something soft). It's incredible how a painting can prompt our other senses. What my eyes observe when looking at Rembrandt stimulates my sense of touch and I'm reminded of what our body feels like, what running my hands through my cheeks feels like. That is to me fascinating. Btw, wanted to paint the amazing Dani, because my part of the job is honestly quite simple. I get to paint and talk nonsense every day. But she has to watch me struggle through a painting, edit my bald head that gets in the way constantly, listen to all the dumb things I say and then attempt to make me sound somewhat competent, and after doing that for hours she still looks at me lovingly. She's incredible. We're not a traditional couple (what does that even mean btw) but we found each other, we're best friends and we're equal partners in everything we do. Without her, I'd probably still paint, but I wouldn't be a happy painter.
Thank you ALL for your incredible support. Dani and I could not be more grateful. If you like what we're doing, please consider donating :) If you're in a rough spot, no worries, we TOTALLY get it! Just know that our content will ALWAYS be here, and our only sponsors are YOU, the wonderful generous people that choose to support us in some way or another. Thank you ALL!!!

Thank you Re Jan!
@@OurPaintedLives youre welcome sir. By the way, did you study painting from watts atelier?cause your painting style kinda have the same vibe with jeff watts
@@rejan5163 Nope, but Jeff is a brilliant draughtsman and painter though! I went to SVA ('99) had Steven Assael and Max Ginsburg as teachers. But I absolutely love Illustration (graduated as an illustrator) so that's what I prob share with Jeff!
thanks for this, lovely.
Love it, thanks allways
“...the team is strong again.” (16:53)❤️❤️❤️

Gracias Camilo!!!

Gracias mi Feeeeer❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
gran video
Our painted lives , another video and I agree with you for the most part but Theres nothing wrong with using a master as a teacher. There is much to learned from the old masters , the standards of realistic painting has been lost for the most part nowadays. This is not to say that you cant strive for a high standard like this. I've always been a firm believer in the push for this perfection even though there are many reasons we might not reach that level . That said the level we can achieve will be great , that's always been my reason.
One thing i ve learned from Rembrandt was to paint only with round brushes. No flats allowed. They where not invented as rembrandt lives. I also beginn to make my own brushes from hogs hair. Try it. It is easy and awesome.
Buenas tardes - I just found your channel this morning and subscribed. One of these weekends (los fines de semanas) I'll get caught up on the previous 37 weeks' worth of videos. (If my Spanglish seems a bit mangled to you, aprendi de los Mexicanos. That's my excuse and I am sticking to it.)
Gracias!!! Jajajaja!!! You have all the time in the world to catch up! No rush whatsoever!!!
Love how you also give shoutout to craig mullins, I would love to hear your thoughts about sculpting with values and really talk about subtle form changes and value shifts and how you control it! Because I think sculpting and painting are also very close and would love to hear your thoughts about it
Oi, parabéns pelo seu trabalho. Seus vídeos são ótimos, mas não falo inglês e não tenho como ativar as legendas no IPhone e ipad. Daria pra você enviar vídeos ativando as legendas em português? Te agradeço...
Oh and also use no blue. 😁
ugh I haven't painted in six months why
Don't feel bad Sneha!!! After graduating I did 3 paintings in 3 years!
@@OurPaintedLives it must be tiring to want to make people feel better but thank you for saying that.
Grab a brush, some paint, and do up something quick and easy ... if nothing else, you won't be able to say that this evening!
Why you didn’t analyse texture from Rembrandt?
