I see a lot of our colonial past in the insecurities and preferences of many latin american painters. This desperate need that perhaps we all have to be recognized and to fit-in by defining ones endeavor in terms of the dominant narrative of some metropolis (in this case Europe) is not new but is ultimately degrading. Although Rembrandt is great why him and not someone closer? Rembrandt himself did not look too far for inspiration and did great. I'm glad that you don't see it that way. Good work as always. I like where your heart is with respect to the notion of character. Cheers.
Offf qué buena sugerencia Gabriel! Discúlpame si te respondo en español, pero creo que corresponde hacerlo con base en tu comentario. Elegir a Rembrandt creo que no es la negación de mi calidad de ser Colombiano. No es optar por una eurocentricidad por encima de reflejar raices latinomericanas. La Historia de la Pintura en Colombia, seguro lo sabrás, hace eco de la colonización a la que fue sometida. Pero no por ello, creo yo, que deba negarme ante la posibilidad de disfrutar de semejante genio que nos otorgó la humanidad. Y aunque es cierto que la pintura nace de un espacio/tiempo específico, creo que el fundamento de la Pintura es universal. Mi calidad de Colombiano no me impide ser conmovido por un pintor Holandés que vivió hace casi 4 siglos. Pero, te cuento, la próxima semana vamos a hablar un poco de Armando Reverón, un artista que admiro muchísimo. De nuevo gracias por tu comentario!!!
@@OurPaintedLives Gracias por responder. Respeto tu opinión pero Rembrandt ciertamente afirmó su nacionalidad, lo mismo los escritores de la Toráh, y así muchos otros. Ser pasivamente Latinoamericano moverlo al fondo es una negación. Las artes han sido o son un vehículo de afirmación irrespectivame si las usamos para circumvenir aspectos de nuestra vida que nos hacen sentir incómodos cómo nuestra identidad y lo que esto significa en un mundo hostil y competitivo.
