Caravaggio's Theatrical Composition - Wednesday, Week 72 (04/08/2021)

Caravaggio Day Three! Drama! It was unavoidable, we HAD to at least once deal with the fact that chiaroscuro was going to make a histrionic appearance. This outstretched thespian-esque Dani is a perfect way to experience the theatre-like nature present in many of Caravaggio's work. In this case I'm particularly interested in a wonderful aspect of painting which lets an image activate a space outside the parameters of the painting. I know it seems farfetched, but I love love paintings that react to something that resides beyond the realms of the painting. In bocca al lupo!

I was watching the short version of this and I couldn't help but latch onto the 'one of us' statement, as that came up in the movie "Freaks" when the freaks were welcoming the new non-freak bride of one of them. She didn't like iT. I hope my memory got that right.

MAN, your construction is awesome! Congratulations by your effort to achieve it!
If you let me confess - I don't like much doing drawing / construction before painting... I kinda do some lines and tackle the mass drawing (although I love to draw with charcoal pencils - long tip - side of the lead...). But - by not doing a strict construction - my proportions get wacky - and I need to correct a lot - meanwhile painting... I struggle a lot - so - to see your process - made me think...
