  • Today's exercise takes into account the unavoidable darker side of Caravaggio. We could romantically minimize some of his actions by calling him confrontational, a troubled man, a tortured soul, or even go as far as some people do, theorizing that he might have suffered from lead poisoning (but lbh, Tiziano painted for far longer than Caravaggio and never murdered anyone). The truth is that if you put all his genius aside, which is undeniable, he was a violent man that time and again had the luxury of being rescued by powerful people and was never held accountable for his actions. For today's vid (and I invite everyone to watch it) we connect that darker side and that privilege with a horrific tragedy that occurred at the same time Caravaggio painted his Judith beheading Holofernes. The story I'm making reference to is Beatrice Cenci's, who has publicly executed alongside her brother and stepmother for the murder of her father Francesco Cenci, a horrendous human being that had abused and raped her since she was a young girl. Today's painting is about honoring Beatrice Cenci, and acknowledging the gut-wrenching reality that the one thing that devalued her denouncing her father's crimes, was her own voice.

wow...400 years later and we're still tackling the same problems minus public beheadings but even that still a possibility in some parts of the world. Thank you for telling this story, so grateful to have a context. Amazing homage to Caravaggio, can't really describe how it makes me feel...thank you.

For me, this is your best episode yet. Great narrative, great painting. For a single episode amongst many good episodes, this has new depths. I used to be very attracted to dark paintings but now tend towards the light. Caravaggio encompasses dark and light.

Thank you for speaking about these horrible abuses and about the reality of how people with privilege get away with such horrific crimes. Brilliant piece.

wow, I am baffled by the story but most of all by your processing of the story through your own child.
It is a very very strong work.

Powerful stuff, and yes, dark and disturbing, but fascinating and thought provoking. Art history is just as much about the artists and the times they lived in and through as it is the paintings. And wow, what a time and place to be an artist that was. Very much enjoyed this shedding of light on the context surrounding Caravaggio. Thank you.

This is an absolutely brilliant interpretation of a horrible story that takes place all too often to this day. Thank you for taking it on, asking us to be aware, and creating such a beautiful painting. How I long to see it on my wall... You enrich my life.

I've watched every video on your channel, and for ME this is one of the most powerful pieces of work I've seen. It's uncomfortable....nothing worth while is comfortable. In my mind I cannot think of another painting I've seen that I could relate this to. Wow

Highly speculative and conjectural when it comes to Caravaggio‘s character and motivations.
I share your disgust for crimes like those committed by duke Cenci, but condemning Caravaggio and judging him to have been worthy of the death penalty based on sparse evidence, is not a very liberal thing to think or say.

Carravaggio by no means was a " horrible person" , because from the title one can misinterpret it...no "dark dude" , by no means, just a person of his time, no murderer, yes it happens that there was a killing, but he is not a murderer as you portrait it, he might have had a violent character, but again see it in context of the time, there were violent times, and there is dark side not only in paintings , there is a dark side of each and everyone of us, some just prefer to ignore it! To compare Carravaggio to Beatrice Cenci's rapist is a crap 👎
