PAINTING VS. DRAWING - Wednesday, Week 71 (28/07/2021)

- We've explored what happens when drawing is somewhat imposed on a paint layer with Monday's painting - perhaps it feels a bit iterative, almost over-emphazising elements that were already present in the first layer. With yesterday's painting, the nature of drawing feels a bit more complementary, filling in gaps that were inherent to the initial encounter. Today's painting is super interesting in the sense that the two layers seem to be at odds with each other. First layer of paint is expressive, almost Corneliu Baba-esque (lol I WISH!) while the second layer has very specific filament-like drawing marks. So how do we make sense of this clash? No easy answer here, I guess that's for all of us to reflect upon. No better way to do it than with a painting of Lump with owner.

I have a very good drawing technique that often gets praised by my teachers, but I suck at painting, I hope this video can give me lights on how to improve my painting skills, as much as I paint (3 years of almost non stop painting) I still paint like an amateur
Thanks for sharing this thought Nico!!
Made me think of the line drawings/scratchings in Gustave Moreau‘s paintings. Especially combined with the more gestural painting layer underneath. Love your videos!

Have you tried doing the same, but with mixed media? Like base oil painting, but then draw with oil pastels or charcoal. Great video, as usual :)
Do you have a video explaining the paper you are using and whether its prepared to accept oils?
He mentioned it in many videos: Now most of his painting surfaces are unprepared pieces of sketchbook (moleskin) or cheap watercolor paper. A year ago he often prepared the paper with acrylic medium. Hope that was helpful. 🙂
Are you painting on mat board?
Hello, can you share your reference photos with us? Thank you
