How To Play Amsterdam By Van Halen - Amsterdam Guitar Lesson

  • In this video I demonstrate how to play the main opening lick and dominant guitar phrase in the song Amsterdam by Van Halen. This is a great track off of the album Balance, and is a tribute to where the Van Halen brothers were born. Revered as one of the best Van Hagar songs from the album Balance, this tune has some pretty tricky licks that are fun to learn and play. It's in drop D tuning and there's some serious stretching going on so warm up and get ready! I hope you enjoy the video. Please subscribe!

Eddie definitely left a legacy of challenges for guitar players of all levels and "Amsterdam" is extremely difficult to figure out and play; therefore this particular lesson is priceless.
    Thank you!

This is one of the few songs Eddie sat on for years. There’s not many guys that would take as much time trying to perfect a song. Right Now was written in 83 but didn’t come out until 91.

Amsterdam goes clear back to around 1985 or so. I saw a video of Eddie jamming informally and bits and parts of it were coming out. The one where he had the green beer bottle and lit cigarette going. Pretty sure it was filmed in 1985 so that means Amsterdam was at least 10 years old before it made it on Balance in 1995.

The brooding Don’t Tell Me had signaled to my small circle of Van Halen buddies that the mighty Van Halen might have succumbed to the grunge wave. Nevertheless my brother and I decided to give the album a shot. When Amsterdam kicked in we rejoiced as if we’d heard a song from the great 5150 !

But loved the Wolfgang - almost instantly. And the Music Man got us to the Wolfgang.... so hey - all is right in the Guitar Universe!

This just became my favorite riff of all time, and that’s saying a lot. Once you realize how wet and dripping with style it is, you can call off the search. I saw a video of him playing this in 1985 AS HE’S WRITING IT, 10 years before release, and I realized he was the coolest person to ever walk the planet.

I tried to teach myself to play electric guitar 10 years ago and had to quit as my fingers were pretty much toast from 35 years already in the Autobody field and YOU are the first I have watched in all these years that have Eddie's tone and playing style down very well as you are NOT rushed with playing Eddie's riffs and stuff, everyone I have watched through the years seems too hurried and rushed and it doesn't come off sounding right! Eddie had a smooth playing speed and FLOW to his playing, many are rushed to get to the next note or something, you have his feel & playing down very very well !!!

My favorite on Balance. I wish it was an instrumental because there's so much going on even while Sammy is singing (let's be honest) some pretty lousy lyrics. The studio version is great, but the live version in Toronto 95 is even better. Check it out if you haven't seen it.

Actually, if you want to play the lick at 08:58 correctly (or as Eddie plays it), you shouldnt hit the 0 on the b string. Its wrong. You should be sliding up to the 9 and pull of to the 5 of the same string. That way its 100% authentic
