- With only a day to go until Lockgate arrive to install the Reflecks Diesel Stove, I need to finish the hearth and build the fireplace surround

When PVC gets hot it can emit Chlorine gas which is lethal in confined spaces. (PVC=Poly Vynl Chloride)

That's a question best left unanswered...
Just wondering, is there a reason that the fireplace surround did not extend to the counter height? So that would carry the flow at the same height as your counters and protect the plywood, as you mentioned that the top of the heater will get very hot. Just my unprofessional opinion. Armchair quarterback and all that. You are doing a terrific job on a very difficult project. Take care.
I didn’t want the fireplace to marry up height wise with the galley. The height of the stove would have looked a bit silly I think against a much taller fireplace
