Hi all, We've seen a lot of questions asking "why didn't anyone do anything" I'm pinning Mike's answer to that here:
The national park doesn't have a wildlife biologist or wildlife veterinarian on staff with the training and equipment to provide bears with medical diagnoses and treatment. In nearly all situations with an injured or apparently ill bear, including this one, it's not feasible or safe for people to intervene. This post I wrote in 2013 when I was ranger explores park policy on intervention in more detail: www.nps.gov/katm/blogs/the-resilient-bear.htm These situations are difficult to watch, but national parks--in idea at least--protect ecological processes including nature's harshness just as much as they protect the spectacles and beauty of nature.
I believe national parks should intervien..preservation of wildlife helping nature..when possible..saving what can be saved..without help . Extinction of our precious wild life..vetinarians can save a life..then return them back so they have a chance..sick people get help..why not the animals???
I believe you SHOULD intervene, it's only human kindness, we are NOT humans if you do not CARE ENOUGH in our hearts!
INTERVENE!!!!!!!! 😠
@@texasgal3903 I totally agree !!! We have the means to save life!!!
I am sad for the loss, however the NPS did the right thing. The NPS' job is to preserve the park, not heal lone bear cubs. It is in the wild and these things happen.
Ok it has been long enogh since this happened. You should have vets and others ready and willing to go in and help these poor babies.
I am in tears watching this. It is so heartbreaking to see the mother and sibling stay with her dying cub until the very end. I believe the mother was mourning, she even put her paw on her baby and layed her head next to her face. Thank God the cub did not die alone, mother and sibling stayed until the end. Animals have emotions, they grieve just like us. This is so sad, I am still in tears. I have a new appreciation and respect for bears.
Yeah, I'm a retired Army Veteran and I shed a tear too.
@@kevinlarson9111 Thank you for your service and sacrifice, fellow Army Veteran! 🇺🇸
me 2...absolutely heart wrenching.
Donna Sartas, because you have a beautiful heart sis...💘&🙏
Nope she will look at it as food and eat it
You could see the mother mourned her cubs loss, and some people say animals are just critters. 451 was a good mom to that little one, and saw her baby off with dignity.
SHE ABSOLUTELY WAS GRIEVING. WHAT AMAZING CREATURES!
well said !
what do you mean by "just critters"
@@reallifelegend4781 People falsely believe that animals are just stupid, unfeeling, critters. They are so much more.
In the early 90's, I was studying psychology when the lecturer told us animals don't have feelings. Being a country woman, amongst animals everyday, I knew this to be an outright lie, having listened for days to cows calling for their separated calves, sheep mourning their frozen lambs, even lake birds refusing to leave their deceased partners. I left my studies the next day, disillusioned and furious. Thank god thinking has changed yet we still use and euthanise thousands of healthy animals in experiments in science labs each year. Sickening and absolutely unnecessary with computer programming these days.
Makes you realise that when Mother bears attack when they feel their cubs are threatened it is not just an instinctive response, it’s an emotional response that we can relate to.
Nope she will look at it as food and eat it. They live on instinct.
Instincts are emotional. It's just a subconscious emotion.
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 I was crying when I saw this because I'm a mom and I feel the pain of this Mama 🐻🌿🙏🌿🙏🌿🙏🌿🙏😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
@@anmerlyahong3993 don't worry about it. She is living off instinct not feeling and emotions. If a boar would of killed that cub she would of mated with him. Just like a lion taking over a pride killing all the cubs the lionesses will mate with the one that killed her cubs. Bears live off same instinct. Not feeling and emotions like a human.
@@jer6162 nope
When 451 places her paw on the cub, smells it, then pulls it toward her was just heart breaking. After watching these cams for many years, I defy anybody to categorize these magnificent creatures as lone predators lacking any feelings.
You ever see one eat a moose calf?
@@WalterEKurtz-kp2jf not the point
@@bohdaj no , it is
Some people just dont like animals.
@@lucykelly7152 And I am not one of those people, I have many animals and I have always taken care of animals, but I am realistic
I will never forget witnessing this live, on stream. I remember staying up late, getting up early. Checking the cams often hoping for a miracle. I was amazed, as we all were, at how devoted the mother was to her cub. She spent so long with it, protecting her cub. And after several bears passed by without disturbing the cub. Truly amazing.
All it would have taken was a little intervention and some antibiotics, I don't want to hear that bs that therec was no vet available. Find one! There are thousands of wildlife rehabs that have access to vets, none of them would have let him die, just leaving it by the road is inexcusable.
All animals grieve. I’ve seen it countless times with my pets and in nature. That mother bear dearly loved her baby and was heartbroken. She touched her cub with her paw to reassure it and to let it know she was there. 🐻
I am a firm believer that animals feel loss. And happiness, anger, and so much more. Unlike us, they can let these emotions go after a short while. Afterall, they have to get on with the daily routine of finding food, water and shelter. Seeing this mom stay with her cub til the bitter end was both beautiful and heartbreaking.
Oh, my God, this absolutely broke my heart.
Look to the lord in death.🙏
Its obvious to anyone watching that 451 and the surviving cub mourned the loss.
Life is precious.
But nothing lasts forever.
RIP little furry one.
A mother's love is universal. Again and again animals display emotions and compassion and love... We still try to deny their abilities.
May this little cub run across that rainbow bridge with all the berries and salmon it can ever eat.
Yes! 🌈🌉 That story is one of my two favorites. The other is The Dash….if you don’t know it, please look it up. 💕 Actually The Dash is a poem, not a story. But still beautiful all the same.
Isaiah 11 vs 6-7-8.🐻
Except for some species of birds, especially storks. It is all about survival even to the point where if there isn't enough food all babies get eliminated so that the parents can try again another day.
@@KatiTheButcher same with bears lions really all wild Mammals if a male kills a baby the females will mate with ones that killed their offspring they don't live off feelings and emotions they live of instinct that's it.
A human mother but not wildlife. If a boar would of killed that cub she would of mated with him. Just like a lion taking over a pride kills all the cubs the lionesses will mate with him. They live off instinct not feeling and emotions compared to humans.

Man I'm in tears. Beautiful yet so heartbreaking. What a great loving mama 421!
If she gets a chance she will eat it. Point we're no longer a cub but food.
No worries it's 451
I have watched many videos and cried each time on this event. 451 loved her coy so much. It broke my heart to see her putting her paw on her cub. She came back to moan even after the rangers removed her cub. I also remember she traced her cub scent to the water where the boat ducked.
She dose not love her cub she lives off instinct if boar would of killed it she would of mated with him wild animals live off instinct that's it. Just like a lionesses would mate with same lions that killed her cubs when they take over a pride. It's instinct not feeling and emotions like a human.
@@jer6162 Correct. I just watched a show this morning where a dominant male Zebra killed a foal by stomping it to death, then ended up mating with said foals mother. I think people in this comment section are overemotional and not very bright.
They try to understand and make sense of things that are out of their element by attaching human emotions it, thus coming to the wrong conclusion. Animals aren't human beings, they don't feel what we feel. Instinct, hunger, survival...these are things that drive them and are the reasons for their behavior.
If you can't understand this basic premise, then your IQ is pretty low and you should probably refrain from commenting on videos.
@@jorgeillueca5260 get over yourself.
@Bullseye You need to stop fooling yourself and accept reality. If the bear loves its cub so much then why during the next mating season (when yearling is around 16 months) does she kick it out never to have further contact with it again? Not only that, she'll aggressively attack it and chase it away whenever she does encounter it.
Where's the love then? Did it suddenly just stop loving its offspring? Or Is it because maybe, just maybe it's behaving the way it does due to genetic encoding in its DNA in order to ensure the survival of its species?
@Bullseye Facts don't care about feelings princess.
The moment she put her paw on her babies head got me. She really loved her baby.
This is so sad poor mom and little sibling . Rest In Peace little one 🐻😢😢
You can see that she is sad! She is a mother and as mother bears know are very close and very protective of their cubs. Those who do not see the pain and sadness in these images are people without any sensitivity!🥺
That's so sad, seeing how she tried to comfort the cub like a human mother gives me a whole new respect for bears.
That was so tough to watch. I feel terrible for that poor momma and the remaining cub.
My heart was so sad…but also felt so many other emotions reacting to mom’s love ❤️ once again the cam’s bring science & education to all Thank you !
Not love it's instinct. If a boar would of killed it she would of mated with him. Just like a male lion takes over a pride kills all the cubs the lionesses will mate with him. Not love it's instinct.

Wow that was just really something. The family looked so concerned. Poor little thing.
This was really sad but interesting to get a peek into a bear's world.
I think it's sad that nobody did anything.
Beautifully done documentary.
This was very sad and most poignant. Is there anything being done to control this virus? Thank you for sharing.
CAV-1, the virus that causes infectious canine hepatitis, appears to be endemic among brown bears in Katmai and Kodiak Island. On Kodiak, for example, one study found that 93% of adult bears had antibodies for the virus. Scientists are unsure how it might affect young bears though. It could be more harmful to cubs than adults since the aforementioned study didn't find antibodies in cubs younger than 2 years old. Although there are no efforts to control the virus in Katmai (there is a vaccine for it for dogs), the virus doesn't appear to have major population level impacts on the bears. Katmai's bear population appears to be large and robust. Additionally, with more than 2000 brown bears living in the park and a more living outside of it, then a control effort targeting the virus is not feasible. It also infects wolves, foxes, and lynx so those animals would also have to be vaccinated. The virus is one of many challenges that bears may face in this wild ecosystem.
@@mikefitz6837 Thanks so much for this educational reply.
I watched this live and was glued to my computer hoping for a miracle. Just completely heartbreaking! Everytime I see that corner, I remember that event.
Sweet little "Angel's Corner"....
How did the Cubs die was it sick?
Heartbreaking Rip little one 🥺What a great caring Mother 451 is , and I hope her other Cub is ok . 🐻
This was so sad, watching the Mommy mourn, and place her paw on her baby. You can tell that she felt emotional pain. I hope she and remaining cub got enough to eat, to survive winter. Prayers for God's amazing creatures!
This broke my heart. Rest In Peace little one ❤️
This proves animals feel and have emotions. It was obvious in her actions and facial expressions. Just because we can't speak animal language doesn't mean they don't feel.
I will never forget watching this as it happened. It was very sad, but also a glimpse into a mother bear and how she handles this type of situation. It was incredibly moving.
How did the Cubs die was it sick?
@@christianWilliams-pc4jn it says in the video. It died of an infection that affected its liver.
I had read misinformation about this event, seeing it and Mom's obvious bond with her cub is touching. We're told bears are not social creatures. Watching them on the cams provides us with moments of just how much more there is to their lives. 💜
Seriously, who thought bears aren't social? They have made friends with humans on occasion so they have to be.
Who taught you this or even said that??? ALL animals are social creatures. They feel, love and grieve just like you and I would.
Until she goes into estrus and a big male comes around, that bond gets broken pretty quick about 18 months in.
Video of this event and also the event of bear 803’s smallest cub’s passing, pops up in my feed periodically. They both really make me sad even though I know this common in the lives of wild bears. They are so beautiful.
I can't watch this. I can't watch any animal dieing even if it's prey being hunted. Not since I seen Koalas being burnt alive 3 years ago here in Australia.
I love bears and this chanel.
❤❤
Wow, that had to be devastating. Im sorry you had to see that
The love and devotion shown by mama bear for her baby is amazing. Much respect for these animals. ♥️
You can see that this mother was devastated. As her cub lay dying she put her arm on her as if to comfort the cub and let it know she was there. It is so heartbreaking. 😢
Bless that little one’s precious heart. So sad to watch it stumble and fall.
So Sad for the Bear Mother and the Cub that died but you said Bears are Intelligent animals so it must be wrong to kill Bears for so called hunting i call it Murdering.
Me too. There's no excuse for needless killing. I have a very low opinion of people who hunt for "sport".
I remember watching that it was heartbreaking 💔 and Mum did indeed mourn the loss of her cub that can’t be denied 😢
How did the Cubs die was it sick?
@@christianWilliams-pc4jn yes it contracted a disease 🦠 which can be in the wild bear population 😭
@@wendyhood1006 okay thanks. I know humans are not supposed to intervene in nature but I feel like in this case we should have. If it's a predator then we have to let nature take its course but if it's sick I don't see why the biologists following this bear family couldn't tranquilize them and give the cub a shot or something to help it. 😥
How sad...
The mother mourned the loss of her cub.
This video shows that bears have complex emotions and feel things just as people do.
This was like losing a member of my family. I have five rescues and I still miss my Benny that passed away a year ago.
She mourned the loss of her baby I don't care what anyone says animals have feelings they understand more than we realize
You could see the mother and the other cub sensing that the cub was dead. Was so moving how she put her hand and head on the dead cub. You can feel their sadness
That is so sad. Mom was petting it. How sad
Hi Diane
How are you today?🌹🌹
Amazingggggg the love she has for her cubs and then when one just stops living. The mother and other cub are devastated beyond our imaginations.RIP BABY CUB.
This is such a touching and sad video. Now that they know what the cub died from I hope this helps. I hope that this virus doesn’t spread to the mom and other cub also.
These bears are so much more then we humans think. Rest In Peace cub. Nature is a amazing and harsh thing. We need to respect it.

R.I.P. Little One ... Your lovely Mom stayed close by to comfort you in the last days. You were loved... we all need that at the end. ❤
This is my first time seeing this channel and finding out about this place! Thank you RUclips algorithm…..sometimes you get it right! This is exactly the type of thing I’m interested in. Animals in the wild dealing with life, and death.😢
I thought they were going to say the little one had a stroke or seizure or something neurological like that. I’m so happy they told us what happened to that beautiful little babe. Poor mom and sibling. The way she put her paw on her baby was absolutely heartbreaking. And to stand vigil like that with her other cub, UGH! 😢 Thank you so much for putting up these cams and showing us. I bet this changed a few peoples minds about wild animals, well, at least bears, and how they deal with loss. 💕
How did the cub pass away?
Very sad, but natural.
Poor mama. She is obviously a good mother, too. The surviving cub looks very healthy.
Few humans understand the complexity in the relationships of the animal world.
This is so sad and heartbreaking. I'm in tears .
Poor mama bear. When she patted her cub and laid her with her face so close it was heartbreaking. Animals do mourn. We bought a mare one spring whose foal had died at 3 days old. Every spring, for the rest of her life, our mare would stop eating for several days right around the time her foal had died.
OH MY heart is breaking. The way she put her paw on her cub. 😭
This is absolutely heartbreaking!!🙏🏼🙏🏼💙😱😢💯
You can see the sadness & despair of the momma bear. This was absolutely heartbreaking.
This is/was so sad. Animals love thier babies, and mourn their babies too.
2:15 - I rarely cry, but that was a moment.
Great! That proves you're a man with HEART and SOUL
Wow, that was a very powerful, sorrowful video...beautiful to see the love of a mother bear for her cub
That was one of the saddest moments I've ever seen with a mother bear and her cub how she put her paw on him and rested her head as if to say it'll be okay Mama's here
How did the cub contract the virus? Is the vector known? What kept the mother bear and the sibling cub from not getting sick too?
CAV-1, the virus that causes infectious canine hepatitis, appears to be endemic among brown bears in Katmai. It is spread through bodily fluids like urine and can be transmitted between different species. Wolves, lynx, and fox may also carry the virus in Katmai. This mother bear may have had antibodies from previous exposure to the virus or if she contracted it when her cub did, then maybe her body was able to cope with the infection easier, much like how COVID-19 and the flu don't affect all people in the same way. The same might apply to the other cub, although it did not return to the river the following summer with 451.
Very heartbreaking Moment for this Bear Mother, Her Devotion to her Cub shows these Bears do have feelings, as evidenced by her Touching her cub Gently sensing what had happened but Hoping her little one would recover. Most human Like I would say. The Cub's Death will not be in Vain as they were able to determine what caused it as they said to better understand it. These Cams do a Lot of Good in Many ways as shown in this Tragic Moment in History of Bear Cams.
Animals have deep love too..rip little one..staying with him till the end ❤
Life isn't always fare, but it is always life. When I was a teenager I came across a momma opossum that had been hit by a car. The car ran over her head and crushed it. I stood there watching her dead body move. Then I noticed that she was having contractions. She was pregnant. I watched her give birth to 13 premature babies. One by one each was forced out of her womb in a last ditch effort to her offspring a chance at life, but it wasn't to be. Each one in turn was born and died a few minutes later. I stood there awe struck at just how strong a mother's will was to give her offspring a chance at life even tho ahe was dead. Nature can be cruel but maybe even in its cruelty we can find beauty.
Held vigil until the very end and still did not want to leave it. Just like a truly loving parent
Not just to the end, but she came back to check on the cub after it had been removed.
Awesome coverage beautiful moment of nature and God's will
A poignant moment for this Mother Grizzly and her remaining Cub The Cub layed there for two days before it expired. The Mother Grizzly then waited two more days with her remaining Cub. Laying down next to the deceased Cub. Never moving just laying down watching her unmoving Cub. This was difficult to watch. It showed a Mother Grizzly Bear mourning her loss. Finally the Mother Grizzly and her remaining Cub moved off. This was certainly a rare glimpse into the life and death of a young Grizzly Bear. 💪🏼🙏🏻✨
This is absolutely heartbreaking 💔
Well this wasn't what I wanted to watch early in the morning 😭
This is hard to see, but it IS nature's way. I'm mourning along with mama bear, because animals DO feel loss & sadness. Saw an elephant documentary which followed a herd around, & one of the calves died. The mother elephant stayed by her dead baby for 5 days, defending it from scavengers alone; because although the herd stayed with her about 2 days, it finally moved on, leaving mama alone. Eventually, she had to follow, because she hadn't left the calf even to eat in those 5 days. And she cried, tears running down her face. No one will ever convince me that animals don't have souls - from magnificent bears & elephants, to even all the pesky insects. They're all God's creations, just as surely as we humans are. May He bless "all creatures, great & small".
This shows how animals have emotions and love for their family. I am heartbroken watching her stroke her baby as if to comfort her. It's so sad. I hope her other baby is OK.
Poor baby, and momma. you can really feel her emotion :( She is devastated about the loss of her daughter.
Как жалко малыша и маму . Она все ждёт когда он встанет. 😭
Нет переводов, не ясно, что же с малышом случилось. Мужчины смотрели и что там, не ясно. Да, жалко их.
I was trying to sleep when I saw this in my recommended videos... Now I'm going to cry myself to sleep.
A beautiful story of a mother's love, and grief. The other cub showed interest in what happened to its sibling.
I believe you could show this very sad film to almost any human any where on earth and they could tell what 451 was feeling and how she expressed it with touch many times. 452 stayed close to keep the cub warm but also because touch let the cub know she was safe and not alone. We humans are not the only creatures to express these feelings and the sooner we realize and except that fact the safer and better the world will be for all.
It breaks my heart to know that we can't save them in twenty 1st century after we have done such harm to the environment and the animals. I think it's just selfish for one human not to help animals or in that case humans.
Once you understand the psychology and characteristics of narcissists/sociopaths you'll understand that some people can appear human on the outside, but they are non-human on the inside
Thank you for sharing such a heart moving moment with my husband and I as well as the world of people who watch animal videos.

Omg that made me cry as a mother, and seeing her mother, you could tell she was grieving 😢
The way the Mother bear 🐻 was rubbing her paw over the cub was so sad 😥 of course animals have feelings for Gods sake, they feel emotions too 💔
You can see how she mourned her baby, placing her paw gently on the it and putting her head down. I’m assuming that’s mom returning to find her cub gone and she just sits in the same spot where her baby had been 💔
So sad she wanted her baby to get up😥
Were all related..Don't lose sight of that..
She stays with her lil baby threw it all. A mother's love is strong. What a good mama! But I could see her loss and at moments looks around as it to ask for help. Brought me too tears! May her lil baby rest in peace!
