Make sure you are getting unsweetened banana chips- I see so many people just buy whatever they can find at their local grocery store, however those banana chips are usually loaded with added sugar! I get all my rats' ingredients for their homemade food from the health food store- all organic and no added preservatives- mostly grains...its more natural.
Hey there, I am a Pet Nutritionist and Vet Assistant, I do not agree that this should be their main diet. Rats NEED a main high quality pellet such as Oxbow Adult Rat Food, Mazuri Rodent Feed, Harlan Teklad. What you are feeding should be a supplement beside the pellet as seeds are actually bad for rats if given in large quantities and puffed rice is basically nothing and has no nutritional value whatsoever as well as cheerios, they have sugar even if it says low sugar it still has a lot. Rats need a HIGH QUALITY protein and nuts just won't cut it, they need a meat protein such as chicken or tuna. Another option is dog food but this has a few bad stuff in it as well but these are the ones I suggest: Solid Gold Holistique Blenz, Wellness Healthy Weight, Natural Balance Vegetarian, Natural Balance Lite, and Blue Buffalo Lite or any dog food with a protein less than 18% (dog food can be higher protein because it's high quality protein) and fat at 4-11% depending on your rats situation. I personally feed 2 tbs of Blue Buffalo Lite with 2tbs of oxbow and 1tbs whole rolled oats because my rats situation is that I have an underweight nursing mother so she needs all the good protein and fat she can get , and her babies need those things too, plus 20% of her daily food is fresh veggies daily too
Time To Get Fancy This sounds shitty. You probably haven't done a biological study on the effects of porphyria, so let me warn you: Carbohydrates and sugar are extremely important to these animals. You are ruining their lives because you think that sugar will cause tooth decay and you refuse to give them it. "Oh no" you say, the American Dental Association warned me about those bad old cavities. News flash: The red stains on the teeth are porphyrin deposits and the decay is caused by the condition, not by the food they eat or their gnawing habits. Those gnawing habits, by the way, are also rooted in the genetic condition Porphyria which causes lifelong muscle tension and jaw clenching. They put shit in their mouth to taste it, to think about it and to keep their rear teeth from grinding on each other too much. Also THEY NEED SUGAR. You can not have a diet in humans or animals WITH NO FUCKING GLUCOSE the animal will melt away into the floor, unable to think or act, just sleep, for it's entire life with no sugar. Complete misnomer about rats: Their teeth will rot if you give them sweets! Truth: Porhyrin deposits on teeth, causing red stains and extremely slow tooth decay. Outside influences have almost no effect on the teeth, the biological makeup of the animal dictates the speed of tooth loss. STOP SPREADING LIES, STUDY PORPHYRIA IT IS A HORRIFYING ILLNESS AND YOU NEED TO LEARN ABOUT WHAT THESE ANIMALS GO THROUGH ESPECIALLY IF YOU OWN THEM
Time To Get Fancy 20% Vegetables is too much. This is what makes their shit stinky and moist and horrifying. It horrifies them too. They can't believe how stinky their vegetable poop is, and they don't like it being around. The digestive aid is necessary, but only during the summer when colic torments them. 2 Days with vegetables per week is good, 3 days for a stupid hot week. Limit vegetable consumption during the winter to 1 day per week and increase protein intake moderately. Protein scabs and porphyrin welts won't be a problem during the colder months so you can provide meat 2-3 days a week.
Maybe you should read what I wrote before arguing with me, I never once said that sugar destroys rat teeth! I'm saying that eating these cereals everyday has no nutritional value whatsoever. Natural sugar from fruits are the type of sugar they need. Feeding 20% of veggies are the healthy amount and if they are having moist and stinky feces it means that you probably introduced it way too quickly into their diet, it needs to be gradual like switching animals food should be. Rats are Omnivores meaning they need veggies, meat, grains and a small amount of seeds (once in a while).
+Hydrolysate I fed my male rat Oxbow adult rat food as a main diet and fruits veggies daily and he lived to be 4.5 years old! He was my world. I don't think processed cereals are good. They lack essential vitamins and minerals that they need. I know that everyone has the right to feed what they desire but don't hate on people who feed commercial diets. Obviously the commercial diets with all the seeds and dyes are no good but I loved Oxbow food and my rat loved it too!
I'm going to stop buying rat food from the pet store and start making this! Thank you so much for sharing this, my rats are going to love it. :) One question though, do you make them this once a day and at what time do you give it to them?
Hi, thank you so much this really helped me because I live in a country where animals are not a big thing and they sell the rats but they don't sell the food!!!!! So now I can make the food myself!!
Mixes from stores are usually not very good, you can make better ones at home. Mix as many whole grains as you can, a few nuts and seeds, and some dried fruit and thats a good dry mix for variety. I feed leafy greens such as kale and lettuce daily along with a fruit(usually bananas or berries) then other veggies like cooked sweet potato and carrots. I also pick one protein source for the day, cooked beans, mushrooms or meat are my three main ones. And since at the moment i don't feed a dry....
Great video Ive had 2 male rats in the past and I always gave them store bought food which was really expensive This gave me some great ideas thanks :)
What do you think about my rats diet? I feed them that shop bought 'rat Muesli' it contains animal protein in the form of chicken meal, as well as the usual stuff like crushed peas, oats and barley it's also got maize in it. In addition I feed them fresh vegetables everyday such as; Sweetcorn, peas, banana, carrots, apple and occasionally kale. I'm worried about the antibiotic thing with the chicken and possible harm to my rats.
It's nice to see people care abotu what their rats eait insetad of giving them "Rat"-food. I asked a six year old kid what dogs eat, she said "dog"-food. So I asked her if she eat "human"-food and she said "no". I can't help but think thoose processed foods that has a "tag" for a special type of pet is the same thing no matter what pet-tag they have. This is bad for rats since they get fat from too much seeds and too much nuts. Making it yourself will ensure they dont get too much fat seeds.
Good to know others do this as well. I was told by many that I spoiled my rats but they loved my food and had a great sense of smell because they would jump around when they knew I was eating lol broccoli and avocado and grapes were their favorite foods. Store rat food would last me months since they didn't like it (hence "spoiled rars" comments)
I give my rats cereal, veggies, and treats.. they do not eat the store bought food. Rat's spice of life is food. They need something healthy and tasty! This recipe seems perfect. I will fav. this video so I can remember it! ~WandasCutePetsNStuff
I hav a question, If I feed my rats lab blocks mixed in with some cherios rice crispies and banana chips. and sunflower seeds everyonce and a while . And iin another bowl would be the veggies she has in the video.. would this be ok to feed them every day if u mix it up everyonce a wile?
.... mix I give a 1/3 cupper rat of cooked or dry grains a day, these are oats, rice, wheat, spelt, and a lot of others. I also give them a small portion of what I eat daily to ensure variety and balance. I also give fresh and dried herbs such as basil and parsley. If you are worried about harmful substances in your pet's food stop feeding it and call/email the company. I have a blog for my rats and rat care that is linked on my channel, I will be going into feeding more VERY soon.
I never eat over-mature avocado so I wouldn't give them avocado like that. They never ate the shell or core, too smart for that lol Thanks for the tip/info!
not that this is right but my 1st 2 rats I ever got lived off a diet of junk food mainly crisps and and store boughtrabbit and G-pig food and water and the occasional apple or carrot lol and they lived for4 yrs
Her rats may not like them. Only one of my rats will eat Oxbow pellets, and she only does it from time to time. My two other girls refuse. I feed them a homemade diet because of this.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIDEO. I FEED MY RAT OATS AND LIFE CEREAL. THESE ARE HIS FAVORITES. HE ALSO LIKES SPINACH, CHICKEN, AND FISH. HE LOVES RAW POTATOES. I WILL TRY THE BROCCOLI AND CAULIFLOWER YOU MADE. MAYBE HE WILL LIKE THAT. THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP. FROM ONE RAT LOVER TO ANOTHER. REMEMBER WE ARE THE LUCKY ONES.
Just to let you know this is not a complete diet alone and needs to be supplemented by Harland teklad lab blocks or high quality low protein/fat dog food such as nutro natural lite. Also adding a vitamin/mineral rich cereal such as Total would help. :)
It took me about a week. They were 10 weeks old and I was worried because they were quite skittish but after about 5/6 days they were fine. I left them alone for a day or two and then began stroking them and giving them treats and then I finally just bit the bullet and picked them up and they were fine.
How incomplete, I've been feeding my rats a shop bought rat feed, that contains animal protein(chicken) and fresh vegetables and other fresh foods such as; plain pasta and rarely eggs. However I've heard that the antibiotics and such things fed to chickens could be harming my rats.
Great video. You are feeding them great things, and they are definitely going to live long lives. To all the stupid people out there that are giving their rats store bought pellet food. The pellet food can actually be very bad for them, especially with things in them like alfalfa and more. I suggest doing what this smart lady has done!!!
I think that rats need nothing like cereals for people (not enough fibre), dried fruit (too high concentration of sugar, possible conservation by SO2), too much nuts (fat). I personally feed extrapremium granules (each granule contains the same amount of every ingredient, it has balanced ratio of proteins, fats and saccharides, contains vegetable as well as animal products, herbs, extra vitamins and minerals) - rats cannot choose what to eat, thus they always get all they need.
No, most rats do not get diarrhea from greens they get loose stools. There is a big difference, diarrhea can not be held in. So start off slow with mostly grains and gradually increase greens and other foods. A wild rats diet(that does not live in a city) is composed of 70-80% grains or carbs, 5% fatty foods, 10% protein, and the rest are fruits and veggies. I feed a way higher amount of fruits and veggies because they have a wider range of nutrients.
Nuts are not healthy for rats and neither are banana chips. Your ratties are better off with a healthy high quality store bought food such as Oxbow. You can buy it on Amazon
You should cook the potatoes, raw potatoes are poisonous to most animals, they contain oxalic acid(I think) and they're in fact poisonous to humans raw, it's just that we'd have to eat a lot of them. Cooked potato is a good thing to feed your rats. Also remember rats are sociable animals, if you can it's best to get more than one.
Sorry but this isn't what they should be getting, you need to be feeding them a proper Pellet food, that is in there house all the time and anything else is extra food.. not mixes.
Overfeeding dog food can lead to a lot of health issues in rats, you should only have a small amount of good dog food mixed into your base food. If you love your pets you won't feed them things you know will hurt them just to save a little money. $50 a week!? what kind of food do you think people buy!? with $50 I could buy ingredients to a basefood that would last for several months.
Lets say my rats eat the veggies and then they leave the food then what do I do with the other mix? Do I keep in in the cage or do I remove it for a day or a while and then try putting it in agin. So u can email me back at popgirl2020@gmail.com and please keep in touch. Thank you and please reply back as soon as possible
Not bad, most people just give their rats some mix they buy at the pet store and think that's enough... fresh vegetables and some kind of protein is the most important part, I don't like to give my rats dried or processed food...
There is a BIG diffrent between wild animals and pets. The pet cant handle the bacteria from raw meat that been laying aroud but the wild animal can! and if you dont belive me, look at the high death rate of young wild animals, the ones that survive can handle the bacterias but the one that doesnt, they die. Pets dont get in contact with theese bacteria and therefore more of the young survive but the one that survive can NOT digest the bacteria without complications.
It's realy dangerous to alter the amounts of a homemade mix. Every thing in the mix is there for a reason, giving more or less based on their likes garentees that they will not get what they need in vitamins and minerals. You can change parts of the mix safely with a little thought and research so that they will eat it. There are also a couple of good rat foods out there, like oxbow. Supplement with a mix for variety, and you will be sure they are getting well balanced nutrition.
The diet in the video is high in fat, low in b vitamins, low in vitamin k, high in phosphorous and low in calcium. So unless this girl feeds a much more varied diet(with meat, different grains, beans, more varied fruits and veggies, mushrooms, and much more) her rats will have deficiencies. I feed my rats an almost fully fresh diet with a whole grain cracker or pasta now and then, they are fed a lot more varied diet than this. I have done extensive research on the topic.
I think you give to much cabbage vegetables. Like broccoli and cauli flower, these are gas producing veggies and nog healthy for rats on a daily basis.
Make sure you are getting unsweetened banana chips- I see so many people just buy whatever they can find at their local grocery store, however those banana chips are usually loaded with added sugar! I get all my rats' ingredients for their homemade food from the health food store- all organic and no added preservatives- mostly grains...its more natural.

my girl loves strawberries.....and most of all sharing , what rats need most is your time, they are all about love.
You feed your rats pretty good with that type of food. Nice video.
Honey. No. No no no.
you are a wonderful ratmom
I'm going to stop buying rat food from the pet store and start making this! Thank you so much for sharing this, my rats are going to love it. :) One question though, do you make them this once a day and at what time do you give it to them?
Haha, right when you started messing with the cereal, my rabbit went crazy. She thought i was opening her treats.
Great video. I will definitely try the dry recipe! Much better than the premixed garbage rat food.
Thanks! Getting them tomorrow and have normal food but I wanted to give them a treat once in awhile and wasn't sure what was safe

Mazuri brand feeds has a large-pelleted food for rats. good for the main diet. the mixture shown here looks really good. lots of variety.
If i put a bowl of food in my rat's cage, one of my rats decide to transfer all the food inside the bowl, into their igloo.
cool I will do the vegetable thing because my dad has a vegetable garden :)
Mice and rats have basically the same food habits, so yes, this works wonderfully for mice ^^
THANK YOU SO MUCH. I LOVE THAT LITTLE RAT SO MUCH.
Sorry about the fot I was typing to fast I actually ment for
thanks though, i am not even doing this much for mine. i am learning though,, i need to get him more veggies and stuff... so thank u
Dry pasta and rice can swell up in their tummies, so it's not recommended! Cooked is fine tho and a normal add to their fresh food.

your poor rats are not getting the nutrition they need with this diet!
agreed
Is that really how much you should feed them everyday? I'm hoping to get pet rats soon, so I'm curious. Thanks!
hey thanks im asking for two rats for my birthday and i hate most storebought pet food for rodents . this helped a lot thanks!

oooh cherry tomatoes! never tried them with rats ... coool
great video helped me a lot but if a pet store sells rat food how can it be bad if it is made for rats?
awesome thank you !!! ..

Could this be prepared in bulk and kept in a container?
I never eat over-mature avocado so I wouldn't give them avocado like that. They never ate the shell or core, too smart for that lol Thanks for the tip/info!
What brand of sunflowers is that
thank you
Do you feed them twice a day or just once? Btw I love your videos
rats should always have there bowl full
Mangos, too!
does any of the food have high fructose corn syrup
Hi,does anyone have any suggestions of what to add to my dry rat mix? There's a video of it on my channel! Thanks :)
not that this is right but my 1st 2 rats I ever got lived off a diet of junk food mainly crisps and and store boughtrabbit and G-pig food and water and the occasional apple or carrot lol and they lived for4 yrs
i have a question for you. how many rats did you feed with that and how many times do you feed them a day with that portion?
u should use black sunflower seeds my rats love them and look for them everyday
Could they then not be at risk of getting diarrhea? I'd always thought that you could over do it on the leafy greens.
How many rats are you feeding? I gathered from the comments that you have 2. I'm thinking about getting a pair of girls somewhere down the road.
What about steelcut oats?
You should give them a bowl of oxbow with that! Oxbow is the best rat food for rats! And sunflower seeds are only for treat
Her rats may not like them. Only one of my rats will eat Oxbow pellets, and she only does it from time to time. My two other girls refuse. I feed them a homemade diet because of this.
This helps me a lot!

Can i use this for mices?
How long did it take you to tame your rats when u first bought them?
It took me about a week. They were 10 weeks old and I was worried because they were quite skittish but after about 5/6 days they were fine. I left them alone for a day or two and then began stroking them and giving them treats and then I finally just bit the bullet and picked them up and they were fine.
Eeek. Please go with Oxbow and Harlan Telklad.... And add these things as treats once in awhile....
Can i use flavored oats ? 0;
I like your rat's diet. Nice and healthy
I want to be a rat at your house...wow! they are well fed.
For just a little more money you can get all those things organic and non-GMO.
What's wrong with GMO
Nicee.. gonna try this with my rats :)
well cheerio's have more sugars then kik's might want to try them instead, thats why they love'em more lol
it doesnt swell in their stomach. since it makes them gassy and rats cant burp people think its bad its not they can still fart.
I suggest doing what this smart lady has done!!!
that is partially true but oxbow adult rat food has NO alfalfa and it is healthy for them
+Taylor Rose Agreed, I give my rats Oxbow.
they do have seedless
Why is it bad to give them sweeter food?
I think that rats need nothing like cereals for people (not enough fibre), dried fruit (too high concentration of sugar, possible conservation by SO2), too much nuts (fat). I personally feed extrapremium granules (each granule contains the same amount of every ingredient, it has balanced ratio of proteins, fats and saccharides, contains vegetable as well as animal products, herbs, extra vitamins and minerals) - rats cannot choose what to eat, thus they always get all they need.
And what will happen if you feed your rats broccoli? It's nothing wrong with it.
Please give me a good explenation.

nuts are fine if they plain and roasted, and banana chips are fine if there not sugared

not really, it's perfectly fine, as long as you enrich their diet with treats and stuff.

WHY ARE RAW POTATOES BAD FOR HIM. HE REALLY LOVES THEM.

+Taylor Rose Coliflour?
+Triple_A_Queen oh yes they cn have cauliflower
+Taylor Rose lol thanks
+Triple_A_Queen no problem 😝
The diet in the video is high in fat, low in b vitamins, low in vitamin k, high in phosphorous and low in calcium. So unless this girl feeds a much more varied diet(with meat, different grains, beans, more varied fruits and veggies, mushrooms, and much more) her rats will have deficiencies. I feed my rats an almost fully fresh diet with a whole grain cracker or pasta now and then, they are fed a lot more varied diet than this. I have done extensive research on the topic.
I think you give to much cabbage vegetables. Like broccoli and cauli flower, these are gas producing veggies and nog healthy for rats on a daily basis.
give them Cheerios
you meant home-blended food....since you don't make any of these ingredients yourself at home....
Oh, ok..
Unsalted and unroasted
