I just cut my hair folloing your tutorial. My hair is very thick, curly and silver gray, very difficult to manage. I as so scared going in, but I'm pleased ith the end result. This is my first serious attempt at cutting my on hair. Thank you for the great tutorial!!!!
I have super fine medium length hair that I struggle to keep layered for body without compromising the weight or without having a distinct gap between the crown and the ends…but the blunt square cut technique is a game changer!! I always did the round point cut but I’m blown away at the body and layer definition in my hair now using the square technique!! It works beautifully!! And you’re so right, it was the easiest cut and the fastest too! Thank you for sharing this!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
OMG after watching this I questioned all the things I'm learning in hair school. Why aren't they teaching it this way??? This is SO much easier and looks flawless, not choppy the way they showed me
This is the way I teach my students to do long layers. It’s so easy. Only difference is we stand in front of each of the 4 sections we cut and point cut on dry hair. It’s super easy and fast.
I hate the point cutting. On my hair it always looks bad. The stylists do not listen to me because they are trained to do point cutting. Have not been happy with a haircut for years no matter how much I pay!
My daughter would only let me cut her hair, even as a teen, and I've cut mine for years. She now follows an online video, such as this one. If you followed a video, taking your time, it would really be worth it, since hair dressers are not satisfactory, as so many find out. Longer hair is much easier to do, though, than short layers. All the best - start saving your money for other things! 💁♀️
@lyndaallaby2131 exactly this ❤ my mum trims my length every couple of months and I do my layers like this, I have thick hair and few times at hair salon it looks like it's been done with a knife and fork, it takes me a few days tbh as I take my time, but always happy and have compliments. I also cut my mums hair. We both have ocd 😅 xx
This tutorial is one of the most METHODICAL and CLEAR explanations! Thank you so much for your tips throughout and your expertise! I think I could actually do this! Thank YOU!! 💖💖💖💖
Hi Summer! Found you through Glam Girl Gabi... So glad I did! This is exactly what I have been wanting for my hair, but have failed to articulate. I really appreciate the videos you have shared that give us the right vocabulary to get what we want! "Surface layers" "drop the perimeter"... square cut vs round cut layers, effects of blunt cut vs point cutting... what to ask for to get what you want and more importantly, what we don't want! Pics help a hairdresser see what we want, but our head shapes and hairline along with hair density can really change a haircut. Going in to a poor hairdresser saying "I want layers" vs "I want long surface layers, square cut to protect my length"... game changer!
Hi! Thanks for supporting the channel! I am so happy I'm able to help in your communication with stylists for your hair! If you haven't already make sure to check out my other channel Summer Beauty for even more hair things. You can find a video to it on my community page!
Wow, you're very good! I wish I had someone like you to cut my hair. I'm 65 and I can probably count on one hand the number of good haircuts I've had. Consequently I've been cutting my own hair for decades. And I'm pretty good at it
Summer! Thank you so much for this great video! I did this on myself, and it turned out great! First, I cut my perimeter, and I got that darn v in the back, but I cut that longest part that travels the most, and then the vi was gone. Then I followed each step carefully as you did in the video. I did the blunt, not point, cut. After a blow out, it was PERFECT! You are the best. You are so talented and you have such a beautiful camera presence. I love all your videos! Thanks a ton!
Just found your channel today - after I already cut my own hair... 😄 I have cut my own hair many times and it turned out ok today, but it could be better. Now that I've seen this video I'm going to go back over it! Your instruction and clear videos are excellent. I especially appreciate how simple you keep your explanations. Very impressed. Thank you so much!!😍
This is the first time I’ve ever seen one of your videos. So impressed with your ability to so clearly demonstrate and explain the haircut. The lighting and camera angles were perfect The completed cut is absolutely beautiful! You can clearly see what the point cutting did! Thank you!
Me and my daughter have kind of wavy and curly kind of hair. Hairdresser take us for granted and cut Mediocre. I was not satisfied. I tried the tutorials and your popped in and I was impressed and immediately subscribed. Watched many of your videos. And did 2 times to my daughter. Both the times it wasn’t bad. Now I cut her hair, it’s so much better than hairdressers. Also will attempt mine shortly. Thank you for your help.
Hi summer, I love watching your videos. I actually did this technique the other day and it was the first time in my career that I felt just absolutely happy with the results of the haircut. I’ve been out of Beauty school for two years and have taken numerous classes and still not felt as confident as I did watching this video and re-creating it. Thank you for your education you don’t know how much it truly means to me.
Omg I am so happy to hear that and that means so much to me!!! Keep on at it girl! Even 16yrs in I have my moments of feeling like I could have done better!
Great tutorial! I learned how to do square layers way back in 1996 as a student of Graham Webb Academy. The only difference was, they taught to take pie shaped sections around the back, which after seei g how you do it seems counterproductive. I suffered a neck injury shortly after graduating from GW, so never pursued a career in hairdressing. But doing hair for family, square was always my favorite to do! Thank you for showing point vs blunt cut on the same head. That was so helpful to see them together in the same haircut. That being said, my stylist always point cuts my hair. Next time I'm telling him to blunt cut the layers instead. STUNNING!!!
I get my hair foiled and toned. If my ends are point cut, they end up looking straggly. The only stylist that blunt cut my hair was Amber. I don’t go to that salon anymore. However, my husband and I did this today to my hair and it came out great. I needed him because my arms aren’t long enough to hold my hair taut enough to cut straight
Love all of your videos! Thank you! Have been struggling for a few years now trying to locate a stylist that can do these simple cuts and have gone through way too much money ending with tears and long waits for regrowth. You made this so easy and clear that my husband (HE WAS SCARED) able to help me make even parts and I was able to do this cut myself! I've always been able to cut and style hair pretty well after being a hair model back in the 80's (yikes dated me) I still cut my hubby and son's hair and am now confident to continue cutting my own thanks to your help!
You saved my hair! I had choppy hair cut I did myself. Been cutting my thick hair for years. I’ve watched a variety of videos. Yours is the best! Wow! I followed your excellent and easy to watch video and viola! My hair looks amazing! I prefer the point cut. Thanks for comparison! I always wondered! THANK YOU! 😅
I followed your tutorial and my hair looks great! Blunt cut is the way to go for my thin long hair. Finally I can cut my own long layers how I want with great results. I’ve given up on hairstylists paying $8o for a cut and still not getting what I want even when I show her pictures!
Wonderful! Great cut tutorial- can’t wait to try this. I prefer the blunt cut visually, but I love knowing both techniques. Thanks a bunch! Keep up the good work ❤
That’s exactly the hairstyle I’ve been looking for. I just didn’t know what to call it to tell the hairdresser. I think I’ll have to show the video to the hairdresser so it comes out right, I hope she doesn’t get insulted. Well done tutorial, thank you.
I’m going to do the square layers with blunt cuts because it looks easier to do on myself. As a male I like the thick fullness of the blunt cut square layers along with the greater amount of definition that shows up in the layers.
I wish you lived in Florida. I just got my hair cut a few days ago (have fine, but thick hair-wanted to keep my medium length, but asked for some tapered layers to help the crown from looking so flat), and the stylist gave me extremely apparent chunky, disconnected layers. It looks like she put a bowl over my head and cut one thick layer at ear level, and then cut a long layer 2-3 inches below the bowl pieces. I am insecure about a lot of things, but my naturally nice hair has never really needed to be one of them. I have a shoulder/neck condition that limits my ability to do anything beyond waves from a braid, so unless I want to spend the next six months in a ponytail to hide my horrible haircut, I’m going to have to pay to have someone take 3 inches off my length. Thank you for making this video, as it has given me hope that my cut is at least somewhat salvageable.

I’d love to, got thin fine hair & first cut since hair thinned out a ton - went all wrong 😕Unfortunately, I’m not local but always really enjoy your vids. Hopefully I can find a good hairdresser that’s open to watching this. Good luck on your search!
This is how I remember it was always done in the 80’s and you can never really mess it up. So easy yet for thicker wavy hair which I have, it always worked. Except I added bangs and thats where it would be chipped into to soften the front. My original muse was Stevie Nicks.
Thank you summer I like the square cut for me cuz I can cut it by myself I have curly medium length hair and I really enjoy that cut thank you my first time cutting
If you had the crown at 4 1/2 inches and did a square layer cut, then trim the back outline to the shoulders (or so that the hair is not thin). In the front, comb part from ear to ear; comb forward, cut about one inch across at the middle of the nose and connect this cut to the length of the sides which match the back. Huge difference and looks nice.
Finally, I bit the bullet and followed this cut today. Thought for sure that I was going to cock it up! It has turned out really good! Thank you so much for this video. I've got naturally thick hair and now I've got this like 90s dimension haircut going on. My hair comes to my chest and I took about 2 inches off initially, to follow around. Honestly, slightly more than that could have been cool. Did a little face framing, too. I love it. Thank you again for this video. ❤
Thank you Summer for another great video. I guess I'm going to have to show it to the next stylist I go to. I have been to several over the past few years, but sadly cannot find one that gives me what I ask for. Wish I could find someone like you.
Hi... Summer... I m from India.... I like to watch your videos of different haircuts.... Awesome... I like the way you cut n explain.... Pls mam my request to you is whenever you show any haircut pls show us how to blow dry n style that haircut.
I think the blunt side would suit finer hair better-is that right?? Getting your hair cut and colored is now on the 300+ side and I just can’t do it. I’ll color my hair at home but I think I’ll still go in for a cut. My mom however is 70 and can’t afford it either so I decided to find a cut tutorial and landed here. I’m so happy you made this so user friendly- thank you! And I’ll be coloring her hair on the same day I’ll be doing my own color too.
I love it! First time i'm seeing this type of layered cut. I'm going to try this over the weekend. Both sides are pretty but for me, I like the blunt ❤
This is such a fantastic tutorial! My sister has asked me to cut her hair when she comes to visit me, and this is exactly what I've been looking for. I am no professional, so forgive me if this is something obvious, but how would this cut work with a part to the side instead of the middle?
Hi Summer!! Omg! I am sook glad i came across your channel! I am a new cosmetology student and your videos are sooo beautifully put together. I really love the fact that you show how to do BOTH sides. Most videos simply say "repeat " other side..i love love your videos.. ❤❤
Loooove it! Your tutorial is so clear and easy to follow. Thank you!!! It's been a while since I cut hair and I miss it. This was an easy refresher crash course.❤❤❤❤❤
Summer, I love watching your videos! I am 67, with natural greying hair and a round face. My hair is fine, but I have LOTS of it. I've never been particularly happy with the haircuts I have had and never had a stylist with recommendations on what cut would look great on me. So disappointing! Heat tools seem to turn my hair yellow in spots so usually I air dry and go with my natural wavy texture. Any recommendations without seeing me in person??
Hi, what will happen if i do these layers only on top of head? Will it look good? I want my hair on top to be short and seperated from long sides, something like Lars Ulrich had in 80s.
Thank you so much 💓 😊 you are very good 👍 to teach a beautiful haircut 💇♀️ 😊 that easy to cut ✂️ my own hair cut at home 🏡 I will cut ✂️ my hair like this soon I love it 😀
This was REALLY educational. You're a great teacherq. Both methods are beautiful. I think each may look different depending on if the hair is freshly washed vs 2 or 3 days "dirty" if that makes sense. I would ask client how often they wash their hair.
I like the blunt better but both are great. I’ve been cutting and coloring my hair for over 20 years. I’ve decided to get my lisence later in life. Would you recommend barber or cosmetology school for someone only interested in hair.
I love both sides..always had the softer cuts in the past.. Now I really love those edgy cuts as I've gotten more mature..lol Still love length just vavavoom look..if possible..lol Great video.. 🩷👏👏👏
**Follow up comment** Could you do some tutorials focusing on cutting thinning mature/senior hair in various lengths? My mom has this 80’s short bang on top that she pushes back and is totally disconnected from the length in the back which is to her mid back. It ends up looking like a mullet and the back looks stringy because it’s super thin now. What would you suggest to resolve for that? I know I could get her to part with some length so please feel free to give some less conservative options. Please and thank you!❤✨💇🏽♀️
I enjoyed your super detailed cut! I enjoy watching and learning from others! Not everyone takes the time to teach new ways! Thanks so much! Going to cut my hair now 🤣
Wow this is the hairstyle that I want i screenshot side side by side.. it’s look easy to do it but it’s better if the expert will do.. I will teach him/her how to do it based on your video… Thankiee 😘😘😘
Hi Summer! Your tutorials have been super helpful! How would you describe the difference between these layers vesus the butterfly cut you did about a year ago? Is it just the fringe is heavier on the butterfly cut and more cut out of the length on the sides? I'm looking for something to do on myself that would also look nice diffused with a 2c/3a natural curl. My hair is fine, but I still have quite a bit of it to work with. Thank you for explaining things so clearly!
Excellent tutorial~ thank you! That's about the length I want as well, so even if I mess it up, I should have enough left for a professional to work with since my length is now well past my shoulders. =) I am a bit nervous about the initial perimeter cut/length however, so maybe I'll have my husband do that part, the back I should say~ thx again Summer
I just cut my hair folloing your tutorial. My hair is very thick, curly and silver gray, very difficult to manage. I as so scared going in, but I'm pleased ith the end result. This is my first serious attempt at cutting my on hair. Thank you for the great tutorial!!!!

I like the blunt side better. And thank you for showing how each one compares. I like the choppy side.
The comparisons are so fun for me! Glad you liked it!
Blunt cut for fine hair to build weight and point cut for thick hair to create softness
This tutorial is one of the most METHODICAL and CLEAR explanations! Thank you so much for your tips throughout and your expertise! I think I could actually do this! Thank YOU!! 💖💖💖💖

Love the blunt cut side. Can see all the layes.
Totally agree, if you go too short with the layers you will definitely see a disconnect. Great job, loved the cut.
By far the best video I’ve ever watched demonstrating this technique! Thank you Summer!
I was scared to do my own haircut but tried as it's easy to learn and follow this video. It's a success!!🙌
Thankss
I get my hair foiled and toned. If my ends are point cut, they end up looking straggly. The only stylist that blunt cut my hair was Amber. I don’t go to that salon anymore. However, my husband and I did this today to my hair and it came out great. I needed him because my arms aren’t long enough to hold my hair taut enough to cut straight
The explanation was done so well that everything was easy to understand and one could see the effects of different cutting techniques.
THANK YOU! 😅
Glad I could help!
I did it on my own and guess what it was my first and it turned out amazing thank you! it was easier than it looks
Both sides look great but I love the blunt cut it really has that old school feathered look! 😉
It does!
I'm sorry to hear about your bad cut experience!

I’d love to, got thin fine hair & first cut since hair thinned out a ton - went all wrong 😕Unfortunately, I’m not local but always really enjoy your vids. Hopefully I can find a good hairdresser that’s open to watching this. Good luck on your search!
WAY easier method for square layers than what I learned in cosmetology school! My goodness🙄 Thank you!
They just like to make it difficult in school sometimes!
This is how I remember it was always done in the 80’s and you can never really mess it up. So easy yet for thicker wavy hair which I have, it always worked. Except I added bangs and thats where it would be chipped into to soften the front. My original muse was Stevie Nicks.
Ok, so this is the the most promising tutorial for diy layers, I've seen so far. I just don't trust, the ponytail method 😆.
Excited to try this out!
I really like the way that you handled both cuts vary vary unique
Thank you summer I like the square cut for me cuz I can cut it by myself I have curly medium length hair and I really enjoy that cut thank you my first time cutting
Square layers are for sure easier to do on your own!
Thank you!!!!! I just did this on my own hair and it came out perfect !!
Def my go-to diy haircut
Blunt cutting it great for fine hair but I would point cut for clients with thicker hair to give a softer effect on the layers
Hi Summer! I just cut my mum's hair with this tutorial and it turned out great! Thank you for your beautiful and detailed tutorial ❤
This is the best tutorial on the different layered cuts I've seen. Thanks ❤😊
This was such an informative video. Thank you. I am wondering if you could show us how with this same model/method how to cut in a light curtain bang?
Best self haircut I have ever done on myself. Thank YOU❤😊
Happy to hear this!
I'm so happy to hear this! Bet it looks so good!
I definitely prefer blunt cut. Both are nice but for my hair I think blunt would work better. Thank you for such a helpful video! ❤
Thank you Summer for another great video. I guess I'm going to have to show it to the next stylist I go to. I have been to several over the past few years, but sadly cannot find one that gives me what I ask for. Wish I could find someone like you.
Hope you are able to find someone!
Wish I could find a talented hair stylist like you! I just never seem to get the precision layered cut.
Hi... Summer... I m from India.... I like to watch your videos of different haircuts.... Awesome... I like the way you cut n explain.... Pls mam my request to you is whenever you show any haircut pls show us how to blow dry n style that haircut.
The square blunt cut does give more definition. These videos are great, thanks.
I was surprised how much I liked the blunt when watching back!
You just made my haircuts so much easier, Miss. Thank you from my heart❤
thank you for your help!!
great advice and technique!!!

I'm so glad this helped!
LOVE this horizontal cut!! I’m truly grateful for your method & explanation! 🌟👏🏻👏🏻Can’t wait to do it!🧜🏼♀️
I have really grown to love a horizontal cut like this!
Hands down best instruction video I've seen
I like the point cut. Yet both sides look amazing 😊
Thank you so much Summer for this tutorial. Both cuts look amazing, you make it look so easy!
Thank you so much!!
I love Summer’s instructionals 👍🏻❤️
Ill definitely try this technique. Looked so gd for me to use when cutting my own hair. Thk U.
lovely style cut...will teach my student with this style cut.
Wonderful!
I love this!! I'm a fine thin girl but I miss layers because I've always been afraid it would go more thin that way
Square layers are great for finer hair
I love it! First time i'm seeing this type of layered cut. I'm going to try this over the weekend. Both sides are pretty but for me, I like the blunt ❤
Beautiful, easy haircut, but I'd love to see this cut done in shorter layers!
This is such a fantastic tutorial! My sister has asked me to cut her hair when she comes to visit me, and this is exactly what I've been looking for. I am no professional, so forgive me if this is something obvious, but how would this cut work with a part to the side instead of the middle?
Soprattutto per capire la posizione giusta e, sembra importante, del punto giusto di divisione cercata con il pettine all'inizio. Grazie
Hi Summer!! Omg! I am sook glad i came across your channel! I am a new cosmetology student and your videos are sooo beautifully put together. I really love the fact that you show how to do BOTH sides. Most videos simply say "repeat " other side..i love love your videos.. ❤❤
Hey! Glad you found me 😊. I only recently started doing these side by side videos and they are so much more fun!
Thank you for sharing your technique, i watched so many, yours is the easiest to understand and folow❤
You are a good teacher for me .i am from Morocco.tks❤
Thank you! 😃
Hi beautiful
I love ur cutting. Plzzzzzzz make a video on blow dryer of this kind of hair cut. Thank u😊
Will try this tutorial to cut my daughter's hair. Thank you so much for this great video!
Blunt side is my fave!
So many love the blunt!
My hair has a natural wave / curl. I wear it natural and sometimes will blow dry and style. Would this work for both curly and straight?
Loooove it! Your tutorial is so clear and easy to follow. Thank you!!! It's been a while since I cut hair and I miss it. This was an easy refresher crash course.❤❤❤❤❤
Awesome!
Love this cut! Reminds me of feathering from back in the day!
I like the slight edge to it...that is what I need.
Thanks for sharing! Are you using too high of heat with your hot tools and using a heat protectant?
@@StylesBySummer I don't use heat tools at all anymore.
Perfect haircut, great explanation, yes I will be able to explain this haircut to my hairstylist. Thank you❤
Yay! So happy to hear that!
You're so pretty and your hair is so pretty! 🥰
Thanks for the tutorial.
I love the point cut side!
Hi Summer 😊 love your Channel!!
Im wondering what cut exactly do you have? I love it!
Hi, what will happen if i do these layers only on top of head? Will it look good? I want my hair on top to be short and seperated from long sides, something like Lars Ulrich had in 80s.
Thank you so much 💓 😊 you are very good 👍 to teach a beautiful haircut 💇♀️ 😊 that easy to cut ✂️ my own hair cut at home 🏡 I will cut ✂️ my hair like this soon I love it 😀
Love the way you explained and show
Thank you! I'm glad it made sense!
This was REALLY educational. You're a great teacherq. Both methods are beautiful. I think each may look different depending on if the hair is freshly washed vs 2 or 3 days "dirty" if that makes sense. I would ask client how often they wash their hair.
Would love to see how this looks on curly hair.
I like the blunt better but both are great. I’ve been cutting and coloring my hair for over 20 years. I’ve decided to get my lisence later in life. Would you recommend barber or cosmetology school for someone only interested in hair.
I love both sides..always had the softer cuts in the past..
Now I really love those edgy cuts as I've gotten more mature..lol
Still love length just vavavoom look..if possible..lol
Great video..
🩷👏👏👏
Glad you could see the difference! Thanks for watching!
Hi! Great! This is the best tutorial on the different layered hair cuts, I like it. Thank you!
Very nice! I prefer the blunt cut for more definition.
Thanks for popular explanation about the texture of the different cuttings❤
Glad you appreciate it! Thanks so much for watching ❤️
Please and thank you!❤✨💇🏽♀️
Thank you so much, I am totally trying this on myself now!
very nice tutorial,thanks for sharing
I enjoyed your super detailed cut! I enjoy watching and learning from others! Not everyone takes the time to teach new ways! Thanks so much! Going to cut my hair now 🤣
Thank you so much for this.. now I hav something to show my hair stylist!!
I hope this style can be for little longer hai too.. pls reply.. pls❤
Okay, this turned out amazing. Thank you!
Love the cut..can't wait to try it on myself!!
