Woodturning - The Emerging Bowl

  • In this video Harry and I will turn an emerging bowl from a slab of spalted sweet gum. I saw a demonstration by Stuart Batty where he turned a similar piece and figured I should give it a try. The finish used was Mahoney’s Walnut Oil. This is my entry for this months YTCCC2021 challenge of “Balance”.
I’ll begin by marking out some rough dimensions on where I want the bowl to be located. I then cut off a lot of this bulk on the bandsaw so the piece can be more balanced before mounting between centers on the lathe. I begin with the bottom of the piece facing the headstock and begin shaping what will be the top of the winged bowl. In the end I use a jamb chuck to secure the piece so that I can turn a round bottom on the piece.

You obviously harbor no phobias associated with scale. But when you first dreamed of turning that bowl, did you dream in Technicolor with full surround sound?😇. I for one would definitely have second thoughts of something flying around that far from the machine centerline, but I'm glad you didn't. Your video was awesome to watch and you ended up with a remarkable bowl that I could not have even imagined. Does anybody know where I can pick up an horizon stretcher? I need one badly. Thank you for sharing your vision, time and talent with us. I will be looking forward to your next video.

Thanks for the kind remarks! I can't claim the credit for the design myself. I saw Stuart Batty turn a similar design and figured I'd give it a try!

I've always been a fan of the transition from heartwood to sapwood and what character it can put into a piece (I also love splated wood). The shape you chose shows both off perfectly. Another great piece, Robert

Interesting! I have seen emerging bowls before, but this one certainly has the largest "platform" I have seen! I thought, for a moment, that the jam chuck might become a lid for the bowl, it was fitting so beautifully, but.. Maybe another time.
Well done! It would have taken quite some careful positioning to avoid being cut by the platform, it was so large.
