The counter steering into the spin is standard. What made it brilliant is the way he unwound the wheel as the car came under control so he didn’t induce a spin in the opposite direction. That’s how you drive when your dad is an F1 driver and you’ve been racing karts since you were 5.

@superbarnie It wasn't an intentional drift. That was a loss of control and a very nice save. His speed was greatly reduced when he straightened out again. That tells me he was off the accelerator but not touching the brakes. Besides, you said it yourself, these cars are almost impossible to drift.

Headaches over boring races aside, we're watching something special unfold. We were told this kid would kill himself due to his age, but it only proved to be early training for an age of domination. He might not have many championships yet, but I'd consider him one of the greats already.
Earlier yet, his "horrible father" made him drive racing carts on frozen racetracks all winter to be able to do this in an F1 car. Max probably hated freezing his ass off, but it taught him to control a car in conditions that nobody else can. It's common knowledge that Max prefers the car tight out front and loose out back. His early teen years is WHY he knows this. He knows it's faster IF you can control it. Racing in ANY discipline of motorsport has always been a scenario of "who's the closest to the edge of disaster". At this time in history, Max is that driver. On the edge and completely in control. Then there's Checo and Hammy (who is still complaining that he needs more grip out back) who need the car to fit their abilities and make them feel secure, rather than them as drivers learning to drive the car provided.

I’m 76yo, started racing karts in 1960, and motocross in 1970 and SCCA sports cars in 1980. I knew I’d never be in f1 even though I dreamed of it. Those years of racing taught me to believe in myself, and were a great part of making me the man I became.
Anyone miss the old Max from the STR days? It was much more enjoyable watching the "kid" fight for positions in a mid pack car than it is to watch him lead flag to flag with the best car on the grid like he does now. Some of his wet race drives back then were spectacular.
What you're missing is other team doing their job right. Why are people blaming Red Bull and Max for "doing their job". If the other teams are not there to win, maybe they should step aside and let new teams come in.
What's really ironic is that only Max has the best car and his team mate apparently has something else. Shouldnt his team mate finish 2nd every week if not fight for victories if the car is that great?

An F1 sat is designed to go around corners fastest when not sliding. The downtown they generate comes from their speed and sliding just causes the vehicle to loose that traction with the road. This video however shows a brilliant recovery after losing control.
