I did not want to come home. We are already planning our next visit for 2024. If going to visit to explore different cities and other areas, it is better to apply for a Chinese Tourist Visa. It is totally your own responsibility to sort all those immigration and visa things before you going to a country, It is the same immigration and visa requirement for Chinese citizens visiting your country too. The same thing happened to your Thai girlfriend who did not fulfill the visa requirement to go to South Korea. How come Western tourists alway seem lost when they travel to China and some other Asian countries? Why would they expect local residents speak English while they don't speak a word of Chinese? FYI, China has implemented a new policy extending visa-free entry to travellers from six nations: France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Malaysia for a duration of 15 days. The policy will kick off on December 1, 2023 and run through November 30 of 2024. Hopefully your stay in Chongqing is a pleasant one at least despite all the confusing visa requirement.

The city is really big by area, so the metropolitan region outside of the downtown area is also really big - making it one of the top 3 most populated cities in China. For example, Atlanta in the U.S. has about 500,000 people in the downtown area, but its metropolitan area contains over 6 million people.

Quick tip... That "sausage u were eating was pig intestine. All those "VR" stations you saw (and showed in video) were massage machines.
Most importantly.... next time if you're not going to do any sightseeing and for the most part stay around your hotel then you should at least try to talk to more locals and meet people. It's the best and really only way to get a true "vibe of a city"
Just a observation I've learned over the years traveling. Good travels to you.

It's really important to read all of the conditions for the "144-hour transit visa free" to visit China in this way, and follow the rules to the letter. This means your flight leaving the city you arrived in (in China) must be to a third country. So...
LHR - PEK - FRA - LHR: this is fine - Heathrow to Beijing, then Beijing to Frankfurt, then Frankfurt (Germany is your third country) back to Heathrow.
MAD - PVG - BCN : This is not ok. You are flying from Madrid in Spain to Shanghai (your destination in China), then returning to Spain (in this case Barcelona)
    🙂

How did you navigate around Chongqing, without knowing how to read/speak chinese? I'm heading there in 2 months, and although I can speak/read chinese, I'm not too good at it. And i am aware google maps does not work there... and the local map apps (Baidu map) are all in chinese.

Chinese masses treat foreigners extra nice. I am Chinese myself. I lie to you not. If you are a foreigner, and preferrably a guy from one of those developed countries, a lot of the locals would treat you extra nice, trying their best to help you anyway they can. Don't worry about the language barrier.

Both Chongqing and Hong Kong just have cyberpunk aesthetic, maybe Hong Kong a bit more claustrophobic with the housing conditions, but if you want real cyberpunk, go to South Korea.
