    "Anime Souls" may be closer to From's more Lovecraft-inspired game in terms of how it plays, but it stands on its own as a good introduction to the genre - if you have a taste for its anime stylings.

    Clarification of story, beware of spoilers. Also, message to Serothel and Murasame enjoyer afterwards.
    Regarding what lies outside the Gaol of the Red Mist, those monsters were implied to exist during one of the Isis vestiges (probably the first one). However, taking into account how difficult it is for the average person to not only get the vestiges in the Cathedral, but also remember them among the many mind-burning hours of gameplay there, I’d give anyone a pass.
    Also, I’m glad to see another Rin Murasame fan out here. Her story made me cry, and it made me realize the importance of a self-insert character with low character development in video games. It allows for both the player and developers to spend more resources and time on the NPC’s, allowing for investment in the greater story. Although I love my player character, I can remember pretty much all the supporting cast’s names and most of their last names. And most importantly, I’ll never forget the image of Murasame carrying that massive backpack. That is objectively one of the best scenes in the game.

    • @serothel
      @serothel  2 года назад +3

      Ah, good catch. I've slept once or twice since then so it's fuzzy, but I must have missed that due to Cathedral brainrot. I've been considering revisiting the game, so I'll listen close if I do.
      As for Murasame, preach it! I think CV handles its ensemble cast well, and I appreciated there being a fleshed-out character who fills a non-combat role.

    Technically we're always thirsty. It's that we don't tend to think of our Ichor count as blood. But that's what ichor is so we're fine...just feeding on other vampires/lost.
    But overall Great review. I'm half-and-half on the idea of God Eater being part of the Vein universe, and I can only hope that further CV games use the aragami sparingly, focusing on some sort of smaller threat (I haven't played GE so I wouldn't know if such a thing exists in what I understand to be "Anime Monster Hunter"). The idea of some street brawl being interrupted by a giant monster that you can *try* and fight, or hide from sounds interesting. Like playing soccer with your friends in the street, and then a car comes. Someone shouts "Car!" and you guys scramble to grab the goals and ball before they get close, wait for it to pass, adn slowly set back up. That could be fun but I don't know.
    I'm with you on the lack of clothing options and arbitrary limits on accessories. Sure, framerate is important and I definitely would have made a yeti-like hair monster if I didn't have a hard limit on what I can add, but I feel like they should have compensated with more base clothing options. Even breaking down the NPC clothes and offering them as accessories would have gone a long way in letting us have yet more obscene freedom in CharGen. Also RIP dominos sign. I remember reading about that and had written off CV as "Code Geas, the game" but I think that might've been the intent. Another "Code X" IP with an inexplicable connection to an American pizza franchise.

    I actually disagree that Code Vein being in the God Eater universe makes Code Vein less interesting. I think it actually does the opposite. Think about this - how many connections does this revelation finally reveal? Are Revenants and the BOR Parasite somehow related to the creation of the Blood Unit? What about the Red Rain? Does Fenrir know about the Red Mist and if so, why is it such a classified topic that nothing can be found in the databases regarding it? Have they been researching it?
    Of course, all of these God Eater concepts were concocted before Code Vein began development (or at least, we can assume so, but there's no saying that some of these connections were planned since the game was in pre-production), but these are also concepts that could very easily be connected to Vein in some way.
    So yeah. I think the world is inherently far more interesting as a result. It makes me feel like the story and events unfolding with the Gaol are only a slice of the chaos that's occurring around the world, and it also leaves us with some exciting prospects for the future. Plus we're getting to fight a Vajra, Hannibal and Marduk in the upcoming DLC's, so there's likely to be more story there too.

    • @serothel
      @serothel  4 года назад +1

      This is an interesting interpretation, and IMO a more optimistic spin on my feelings.
      Generally, I feel like when an "original" piece of media is secretly connected to something else, it inhibits the "original" media because it must now abide by the rules of the greater canon it's taking part in. Sounds like what you're saying is sometimes that can be a good thing, which I agree with, I'm just skeptical that this will be the time it pays off whenever I see it.

    • @VendettaSoundtracks
      @VendettaSoundtracks 4 года назад

      @@serothel Indeed. We simply have to rely on them to do it right. However I believe that a connection between these two universes is really hard to screw up.
      We'll just have to wait and see. Shift might not tell the best standalone stories compared to other games, but they are pretty great with world building.

    • @EmeralBookwise
      @EmeralBookwise 3 года назад +1

      Pardon my late arrival, but if I may make a belated interjection. While I personally wasn't much phased by the reveal, I can understand why some might find it disappointing. Mostly in that all those implications raised by the reveal are sort of a one-way street.
      Sure the existence of Code Vein might raise some interesting questions for fans of God Eater over how everything now interconnects, but I think Code Vein itself benefits less from that dynamic. The revenants within the Gaol of the Mist are just so disconnected form any of the other events in the world that simply learning the "horrors" of the great collapse are actually arigami, doesn't really otherwise change anything about their situation.
      Maybe if the mists fell permanently it would have implications for how the revenants would adapt to an outside world that is far more hostile than they were expecting, but in all three endings revenants remain isolated from the outside... the only minor exception being the "best" ending where the player and comrades venture beyond the mist.
      I'd admittedly be interested to see a sequel based on that ending, which could maybe make the reveal more relevant, but given the game's lack lust sales and reviews I won't be holding my breath. I think the most we can hope for is that maybe Louis and the gang might show up for supporting cameos in future God Eater games, although having bounced off my attempt to get into that franchise, that's little comfort personally.

      The long version is that Dark Souls has been so incredibly influential to action-RPGs that the discourse is kind of tainted. Everything gets tied back to Dark Souls, whether it's deserved or not. Whenever I get a hankering for a Soulslike these days, this pops up in my search results, but I can never convince myself to give it a shot. These character designs are too much for me. I can't take this game seriously in the slightest when every last female character model is sexualized to the point of being a walking dakimakura or something. I sometimes think I've become too much of an old fart for anime these days.
    Also, great video - very informative and much appreciated.

    • @HansAlRachid
      @HansAlRachid 3 года назад +1

      @doomslayer420 Why do the fans of this game always assume that anyone who dislikes it is offended? I am in no way offended at all, hell I endorse sexualization as a tool in character desgin, so long as it is well done!
      That wasn't a political statement regarding gender stereotyping or anything of the sort - I just find this character design second-hand embarassing. Sorta like those sweaters or leggings with hentai on them.
      My point is that there is a fine line to tread with this sort of thing and for me it just flings itself so far off that line that I can't take it seriously at all. (Acknowledging the ridiculousness doesn't mean it can't have merit, by the way)

      @@HansAlRachid: Just a show of support, but the female designs in this game bother me too, at least a little, not so much it prevented me from otherwise enjoying the rest of the game, but seriously...
      The problem isn't so much that the girls are sexualized, it's how they're are sexualized in the most crudely pandering way. Two of the female companions are wearing little more the shredded rags and the third is basically slumming it in her lingerie. I could be fine with any one of these characters, but all three is overkill.
      What's worse is that they all actually have better designed outfits in the DLC... which would be great except said DLC can't even be accessed until near the end of the game, and even with the DLC they will still otherwise only wear their base outfits during cutscenes.

    In my view, these Dark Souls styled games are cheesy pieces of junk. They' pretend to be RPG's but are no different than Mario Brothers or Sonic the Hedgehog. Every one of them overuses the gravity death mechanic, much like Mario/Sonic, in an equally as annoying a fashion.
