Last year (At age 50) I learned that I am undiagnosed autistic. My school experience was absolutely terrible - I hated every moment of it - and I didn't understand why I'm not like all the other kids - and why I can't learn anything. Now I know as someone with a neurodivergent brain - following a path that is suited for neurotypical people is never going to work. I did very badly in all tests my whole life - but it's interesting to see that even as a 'gifted person' academically - your life really isn't any easier than mine was. It's actually surprising to me that you are working driving for Uber or working in a restaurant with no relationship or children - and I have a nice house, an IT job and a wife and child. It ain't all roses by any means. I guess life is just tough for everyone in different ways.

Honestly and I hate to blame shift, but this is the massive problem with the school system in general, The system that's supposed to "set you up" for later in life ends up hindering you because it doesn't teach you to learn, it teaches you to pass.
Have had a pretty similar experience. Was considered "intelligent" by my friends and my parents, but i never fit in into school. I ended up getting diagnosed with depression at 12, and was homeschooled for 4 years. Now I'm in gymnasium (basically highschools in Denmark) and don't know how to study. My self discipline has just regressed throughout the time I've spent hear. Most days i feel incompetent, cause i feel i am smart, but i don't perform particularly well in school. So as you stated in the video, it's kind of a paradox. I'm just very worried that I'm not actually "smart", because it's become one of the core features about my personality. One of the only things i really value about myself, so if I'm not smart, I'm basically nothing. The part where you mentioned getting lower grades than you expected in subjects that you enjoy, and are supposed to be good at, really resonated with me btw. I really love your videos, cause i feel like i can relate to them. Stay awesome my guy.
the nasty truth of it is that it really doesn’t fucking matter, unless you’re an actual genius which you most likely aren’t, you’ll probably work a job that requires much less intelligence than you either have or perceive to have but that’s ok! you shouldn’t live hoping to be better than everyone you interact with because most people won’t really give a shit (especially if you’re smart and have bad social skills)
Totally understand this experience you have had. I forget if people really propped me up like that but your parents in general try to build up your confidence whatever way they can but its not always in healthy ways and then you get a big ego and go through life believing you dont have to try hard to succeed when in reality everyone does
this is a bit of an eye opener for me since i can relate to some of these things you said. I do study but only to get the grade that i want and not to truly understand the things and i sometimes have to backtrack to understand the new things related to the old stuff we went through. thanks-
I dont think being a gifted child is always a bad thing, it depends on how you deal with it. I also never needed to study to get good grades in high school but entering university the level was much higher. However instead of being overwhelmed by it I was motivated to prove myself so I studied quite hard. The further along I went with education (ended up as PhD) the less smart I felt since there are much smarter people around me. I know everyone is different and has different life situations but I think a change of mindset can help a lot.
I’d say I grasped the simple concepts right away also growing up, was a slacker when it came to putting the work in to truly be smarter. Also realized later that putting that intellectual work in through studying for example is a great thing to do.
I agree with your first point so much, i'm in first year of uni and i'm already starting to struggle with exams, i've never studied as i always just learned from listening in class and remembering and I was always told how smart I am yet i never learnt how to study properly (or at all really) and I have no motivation to study really. Now that lectures are our own chores to get to and try and learn from and the information is now much more complicated especially since i'm doing the base sciences in first year. The fact i could suck up information and get amazing grades up until i was about 16 is not going to help me now in Uni and all I care about is barely passing.
Uno sometimes I start to zone out and my brain gets clouded and it’s this weird feeling inside of me but these types of videos is really enjoyable to watch during those moments
Id say the worst part of being a top student in hs and then going to college is that the material you learn in hs is way easier. Once you get to college its basically a requirement to speak with everyone around you and develop social skills to drop the entitlement. To be frank this just reeks of asocial, being smart still requires you to socialize and select good influences/block bad ones and get good at things through practice. Everything else is an excuse so dont fall for the scam of making yourself the victim

I was the opposite. Written off as stupid, and would not amount to anything. One of the hated students as I call them. It made me hate myself for many years, and I didn't really reinvent myself until I was 32, fixing past mistakes and pushing myself forward at light speed to catch up to others. With everything I did I was trying to prove something to myself and prove others wrong. I aced a networking in college, I built a body of steel, sometimes running, not jogging for 6-10 miles, death and black metal blaring in my ears through 2-3 hour workouts. I wound up with a serious injury from overactivity, and my degree was a real test of my sanity. Sometimes I would call myself names and slap myself to get myself going, having no mercy on myself. I accomplished a great deal, but I never should have let school and teachers destroy me like they did. I never should have let it fill me with such hatred and self loathing to begin with. I was fully capable all along. School destroys so many different people for so many different reasons. Great video, as I saw it from the point of view of the "gifted."

Also, I kind of think a lot of parents obsess about their kids and want to see tham as gifted. Once, when I was in high school, I talked with my classmates and we found out that all of us were indeed "wonder children". Well, most probably not really. It was just something our parents wanted to believe...

Success comes from education, if went back to college in your you get years, and got a part time job. You could have applied for financial aid and student loans. Im sorry for what happened to your mom but you ahould have stayed strong and tuff put your education. You can still do it but you need to stay strong.
Its always so amusing to me how many children were “gifted” simply because a teacher once said so and they didn’t struggle to keep up with the public school curriculum 😂 If you’re a *truly* gifted child, you get sent to the rich kid boarding school for free and you have to go sit in class with the older students, of which there are only 8-12 kids in each whole grade. I know in my case I went to a public school in the southern US where standards are in the ground because most people are retarded and so I thought because I was excelling at school that I was a genius. The education system is terrible for neurodivergent kids, the whole system of incentives is designed in many ways to uplift the slightly above average intelligence student and highlight their abilities, and is completely oblivious to the ways the abilities of gifted kids may manifest. That is why a lot of midwits that were so praised in school, and even later in university still takes them a lot of time to understand that they are not that smart, actually, they just like to study a lot and people told them they were smart because of that. Meanwhile, often gifted kids that do very poorly in school only after they are free from all that BS system end up doing pretty well by self-teaching skills, in things like programming, writing, etc.

the assessments of other people as to how "gifted" you are is unreliable at best. to refer to another guitaring analogy, it's like playing the most basic, bare-bones blues-scale improvised solo in front of a group of average non-guitarists, and them all mistakenly thinking you're some kind of virtuoso - all attempts to convince you that what you played is actually extremely basic and easy, requiring only the bare minimum of guitar ability, fall upon deaf ears. if you excel even a slight bit in whatever field and normies catch wind they'll think you're some kind of genius.
I relate to this. Always makes me laugh how someone can just start playing thunderstruck and no matter how sloppy they start, the layman will have their mind blown. I can mostly just play chords and I haven’t even bothered to learn any scales at all and yet people around me think I’m a big talent.
