Ameterasu from Okami is NOT based on a kitsune! The kitsune does appear in the game, but Ameterasu is the name of the sun goddess and the form she has taken is a wolf, not a fox. Japanese wolves are extinct. Wolves were thought to have mystical powers and some were even worshipped as either deities or messengers of deities. The reason Ammy is fiery is solely because she's supposed to be the sun goddess.
is the fur/face paint not the same design element as like the ones on kitsune & other traditional masks/art though? i assumed that's the connection he was making
And coincidentally sheep who grow a ton of wool on them become round and fluffy in shape. People saying "There are so many ways to draw a cartoon ship and they picked this one" are just ignoring the entire concept of caricature...
yeah I've seen sheep mons that used rolling attacks in multiple RPGs. it's not exclusively pokemon. Heck, some of the are even way before gen 8 even released.
Yeah, when I saw Lamball, I did realise it is sorta similar to Wooloo, but while Wooloo is a great and beloved pokemon, the aspects of "sheep but round and rolling" is not original enough. And apart from this detail, Lamball has pretty much no copied aspects
I will go to bat for Floppie; it was shown in a trailer before Tinkaton's design was publicly known or even leaked. It could not possibly have been based on Tinkaton and the fact they look anything alike is simply a huge coincidence. It deserves to move up one tier at least, possibly even two because without the "Tinkaton fusion" elements it's not really that much like Sylveon either.
@@bastionsea2829 and how were the Palworld devs supposed to know about it in order to plagiarize it, then? Garbage tierlist. But then again, it's a Pokemon fanboy channel.
@@LichCrypt exactly my point, something could be apparently 'pokemon inspired' while the devs didn't see it, but Twitter will still claim it was copied Also, calling Lockstin a 'pokemon fanboy channel' is being REALLY shortsighted
Same. It would be great if the online discussion over Palworld design was more like correcting a rough draft of a good paper. It’s a paper that would get a C or B as is, but with some polish it could be thesis material.
i would make an argument for some of these just being irl animals and neither design being all that original. chillet is just a ferret, jolthog is just a hedgehog, direhowl is just a wolf. those pals looking like furret, shaymin, and lycanroc are just because they are also just a ferret, hedgehog, and wolf.
Nah, I’m fine with penking. However they DEFINITELY should have renamed Digtoise to either Rotortoise or Rotatoise. I mean it’s a tortoise that rotates really fast!
"There is no such thing as bad publicity If you want something to fail follow these steps simply; Number one shut up." Is maybe the most iconic thing Lockstin has ever said.
I just hope people don't start parroting this without context just so they can rebutt on an argument online regardless if it's applicable or not. It's still okay to call out immoral acts as long as we're doing so with honesty (his words as well). It'd be harmful if people just stopped speaking up in moments where it's much needed. Lots of people go into online debates only to one-up the other guy, so they would use every quote and post they've seen as ammunition rather than having an honest discussion, much like how both sides of the palworld v pokemon debate goes, and much like the potential misuse of this particular quote from Lockstin as well.
@@spacejunk2186 yess, and it's called infamy. Unfortunately, people don't necessarily support/withdraw support for something because it's moral or not, and so most of the time infamy only really separate those who don't care from those who do, and not push away a whole fanbase entirely.
I gonna bat for Jolthog here. Its not that its just copying Shaymin, its that they are both uninspired designs. They are both just an actual hedgehog, but the spikes are an element. Heck, pokemon made a better hedgehog inspired pokemon with Togademaru, the hedgehog is clear, but different enough. Shaymin is lazy in that its just hedgehog but literally hedge, the hedgehog shape doesn't even change, its head, its back, its legs, its all just real life hedgehog. If Jolthog had a another Pal thats supposed to be its counterpart, and that counterpart looks more like a deer, like how Shaymin sky form is, then fine I will accept thats its a copy. But it doesn't, its just an electric hedgehog. So in my opinion, its shouldn't be F tier. I do think that "Since its palworld" criticism is coming a bit too much in some of these.
I love the distinction that they're both unoriginal. Call it what it is. PalWorld is just Pokemon with guns. Down to the philosophy of stealing ideas. Pot taking notes from Kettle. That's what this is, and people need to stop pretending Pokemon is this innocent IP that hasn't done the exact same thing for a long time. You can love the games and series, and find originality in both, but there are clearly a lot of uninspired ideas here and there. If we don't have the courage to call them out, can we really take ourselves seriously as gamers? 6:59 Never forget this. Also, I love the design of Jolthog, and it may have one of my favorite abilities. I can forgive it's lack of originality for the ability to throw an exploding hedgehog at dudes.
@@Aflay1 This is unrelated to the bulk of your comment but I want to say, I really liked "Pot taking notes from the kettle" i'm absolutely using that phrase going forward
About Chillet: how would you make a ferret creature? ferrets look a certain way regardless. there's no way around it, it will look like Furret in shape
I agree furret is such an unoriginal design of a ferret. all it does is change the fur pattern and flaten the face. At least chillet has a much more dynamic design and combination of creatures with the clear influence from axolotls and with far more exaggerated ears and a far more exaggerated facial structure and more sculpted body with a clearly thinner neck that expands into the body. Chillet is far more creative and original than furret.
@@TopOfAllWorldsby "the exact same features" do you mean the body? Cause that's really the only similarity between them, is long body, which is just what ferrets are known for. It isn't even the same type
don't you know? According to internet people (who are defo real people and not bots farming outrage clicks), Nintendo owns shapes of all anime-fied animals, color schemes and fantasy concepts. No, literally, try drawing anything, and there's some asshat with nothing better to do run it against 1000+ pokemon and xyz million fakemon to prove you stole something because the shape of the curve you used somewhere is similar to how someone else did a curve. At what point do people stop caring about baseless accusations? If everything is plagiarized, nothing is. You have several times bigger chance of winning a lottery than coming up with a completely original thing nobody ever thought of before. There are countless billions of pictures on the internet. And just how ppl stopped caring about being called nazis on the internet by the lefty activists for... literally everything under the sun, most people also stopped caring if something looks vaguely similar to something else. Except for ppl whose lives are so empty they have nothing better to do. And if it's parody, it's even more clear cut. It's just internet slobs have no sense of humor, only an incessant need for internet upvotes (or downvotes, clicks are clicks)
I want to point out that flopie was in one of the first trailers that released before scarlet and violet were and before we knew what tinkaton looked like.
This kind of stuff just makes me wonder if it's less Palworld stealing from Pokemon, and more just Pokemon having a ton of super generic designs and over a thousand Pokemon (and especially counting megas, g-max, and Hisuan/Alolan versions) so you could have someone who has never heard of Pokemon or seen one in their life draw an anime creature with some sort of elemental gimmick and it would look just as much like a Pokemon.
@@blackfang0815 The fact over 1000 of them exist makes it easy to claim any "catchable monster" looks like a pokemon. Game Freak will eventually do gen 10 and even more designs will come along which fanboys will claim can't be stolen/copied/derived from.
For those who don't know. Sheep as well known to roll on Thier backs. When the wool gets too dense it can cause Thier balance to be thrown off and they will fall down and roll on their backs making it difficult to get back up. It is very dangerous for them to be near hills and cliffs because they can end up rolling down them. The idea of a sheep ball that rolls around comes from the cartoonist interpretation of this.
My favorite thing about Anubis is trying to point out something actually matches Lucario aside from the silhouette The legs have a different number of joints and different pants. its hand have human fingers and arm guards. Its chest has that clothing piece. the face patter is fairly different. The tail is different. And the color scheme is different. Look at all the check features Lucario has that it doesn't. No shoulder wheels, extra spikes, fluffy shorts?, and no dread things. Rayhound is far worse imo and never gets talked about. People just hate Anubis because its on the cover and everyone really likes Lucario.
Or, you know Bothering to literally take 10 seconds googling to see what Anubis is. Dude doesn't seem to realize the Pal Anubis is just cutified Anubis, the Egyptian God. So is Lucario but Anubis is more... literally just Anubis.
In defense of Chillet, both it and Furret are basically just big ferrets so I wouldn't say that Chillet is just a pokemon when the pokemon is just an animal.
On Google Images, look up Pokemon Dragonquest Copy, one of the first few pictures shows DIRECT copies of Dragonquest creatures that Pokemon were. Koffing, Ghastly, Dragonite, etc were ALREADY copies themselves.
Yeah that's the one I DISAGRRE WITH STRONGLY. So many pal that look identical to pokémon but that one's a ferret come on it's not literally furret it's fairly original
I'm bothered by his opinion of that white electric porcupine being F tier. Yes, it may share some similarities, but in no way is it a ripoff, because, palworld.
Tombat is Tom from Tom and Jerry turned into a bat. The floating sushi looks like the ones from PacMan. Surprised he didn't point those out and even gave Tombat S tier.
So far the only ones I hard disagree with are Chillet (It's an ice ferret Dragon. Pokemon don't own ferrets. by your other metrics, this one is being done injustice.) And Flopie For literally being revealed before Tinkaton. Also, Loupmoon has Absols face. Orzerk has Garchomps head, bodyshape and stance - It's an Electric Orca Dragon instead of a Ground Shark Dragon, so it's literally the inverse, which is neat honestly. Some of these thou, they're clearly getting ranked higher or lower then they should b/c of your personal opinion, which is fine honestly.
Yeah, him going "Arsox is pretty unique, but this one random ass fangame did something similar, so it's a blatant copy." Like huh?! I wanted to stop watching right then and there, but I had to finish it. Then Chillet, my precious little boi. I don't even want to talk about Chillet.
They should have made Wixen a dog pyromancer so the Wixen and Katress rivalry made sense and so it wouldn't be so close to looking like the Delphox line.
Issue with that.. vixen is last half of the name. If you gotta change the species then gotta change the name too.. Wog?.. dizard?.. dozard?.. I dk what name would work in that.
As a die hard pokemon fan that also understands GF needs to improve in their ways, thank you for making this video. You have eloquently put into video form all the arguments as to why i love palworld AND pokemon and why whatever happens in the end (lawsuit or not) this is for the BETTER of the monster taming community. It is literally a WIN-WIN for everyone. Its ok guys, you are allowed to enjoy both Pokemon and Palworld while also recognizing one needs to put in more effort like they used to in the past, and the other one SEVERELY lacks originality (at best lmao). Thank you so so much for this Lockstin!
They should actually do more of these 99% copy Pals. The Verdash copy is actually a 10 for me as I prefer Sepak Takraw to Football, so I have this head-canon that he weaves ratan balls for his attacks.
At this point the lawsuit and all the legal stuff going in the background are just rumours and threats, I hope that this never reaches a courtroom, because in worst case scenario Gamefreak and Nintendo will win, just because they have more money to toss around, and that will mean that a lot of people will be discouraged to try and oppose them again, which will really stifle the game industry more than what it already is, and in best case scenario Pocketpair wins, and that really inspires a ton of developers and people, to start making games and such that rival Nintendo's ideas and things, and then we get a big boom of games, and possibly Pocketpair continues to develop for Pal World, where since its still in early access the sky is really the limit for its potential. I mainly hope that nothing really happens though, since the current status quo is pretty good, and the negative outcomes are just too bad for them to become a reality.
27:28 When I was in Iceland we went on a tour and they talked about how sheep get down hills. Apparently a lot of sheep can’t climb downwards well so they tumble and roll. Does it mean Palworld was basing it off of this real world thing? No, but it’s just a thing I figured id point out
Admittedly I'm extremely confused by your thought process behind most of these picks, with Eikthyrdeer it's "this is S tier because it's just a cartoon animal pokemon already did and they dont own said animal" but then with Jolthog/Chillet it's "this is F tier cuz it's just a cartoon animal pokemon already did and knowing the devs they were just ripping it off". Same with a bunch of other designs where it's "pokemon doesn't own fire horses" and "this is an ice moth so it's frosmoth" like come on lol.
I feel the whole "considering the game we're talking about" point really starts falling flat when nearly 90% of the D&F tiers use that justification for being "ripoffs" despite them being fairly generic furry/cartoon animal designs you'd see anywhere else
Especially with jolthog it a largely different concept on the same animal chillet has a better argument of it being a rip off in my opinion but not by much

there are tons of ways to stylize a ferret, there are tons of ways palworld could have stylized chillet to make it not look like furret, but they didnt. they could have changed the shape of the front paws, gave it actual limbs, made a more clear distinction between the tail and the body, changed the shape of the feet, added claws, made the body thinner, changed the position of the front paws, literally ANY of these, but nope, they stylized it the exact same way pokemon did. heck, *i've* designed ferret creatures before, and even with my pokemon-esque art style they still turned out completely different looking than furret

How does dragon ferret get so low on yours, but the wolf that high? Yeah, the wolf is just any anime wolf, but the dragon ferret is basically just an anime ferret with dragon features. I think of furret seeing it, but I don't actually SEE furret in it between generic anime ferret and dragon features. And there's still plenty of ways to make an anime wolf stand out more, I mean, I absolutely saw theirs and immediately thought "that's lycanroc at home."
Eh, when I first saw the wolf pal, I didn't even think about Lycanroc. The first thing that came into mind for me was Wolf Link from Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess.
The pal at 18:42, I don't think we can compare pals with 9g pokémon, it depend of when the pal was created before the release of Palworld as we know TInkakon only since november 2022 and Palworld is in developpment since longer
Same for the two pals at 30:40, I do think that this is a pure coincidence if they were created before the release of the trailer for Scarlet and Violet who showed Armarouge and Ceruledge. However if these two pals were created like AFTER the release of the Scarlet and Violet games, yes they are copies of Armarouge and Ceruledge but as centaurs.
I completely lost it when I saw you pick up the firefox and use it as a flamethrower. It's a perfect combination of cartoon antics and that machinegun cat meme, and I have no idea why I have never seen this concept executed with Pokemon.
Because Pokemon tries to distance themselves from weapons, as even in older designs like Blastoise or Remoraid, the references are weak, and in cases like Gigantamax Inteleon, he's only got the water gun (the main pun here) for a limited time
Why were FPS games able to escape the “DOOM clone” stigma, but creature collectors haven’t been able to escape the “Pokémon clone” stigma? Most of them have nothing else in common with Pokémon
Hold on! Ōkami's Amaterasu is NOT a kitsune! She's closer to the Ōkuchi-no-Makami, the deified Japanese wolf. Overall, good work!

When Palworld first came out, I was one of THOSE Pokemon fans, who saw the game as nothing more than a game that was likely made from spite towards the current Pokemon product, with the guns and slave labor basically being the developers saying "Look at what WE can do that you're NOT doing!" But after watching this video, especially the second half, I feel my opinion on Palworld has changed quite a lot. I've been a fan of Pokemon since Gen 2, but ever since Gen 6 or so, I've grown increasingly frustrated with the franchise for a multitude of factors. Asides from rushing each game, the franchise honestly feels stagnant, like it's permanently stuck in 1999, and still runs itself like a franchise from the 90's, with an apparent prioritization of selling merchandise over actually making quality products. It honestly feels like they are afraid to innovate, afraid to leave their comfort zone, like they're still worried about the early controversies like Jynx, Porygon and the Christian moms who thought the franchise was "Satanic", and decide to play things SUPER safe to avoid any potential controversy or lawsuits. If anything, that's why I think Palworld is so successful, partly because of the whole "Pokemon with Guns" novelty and meme, but also because it's doing things that Pokemon should have done a long time ago. Think about it, Gen 6 came out in 2013 and was the first all-3D (main series) Pokemon title, when it's contemporaries like Mario, Zelda and Sonic made the jump to 3D over 15 years earlier, back when _Gen 1_ was the current generation, when the franchise was in it's infancy. And that's just barely scraping the iceberg! We're currently in the 9th generation of Pokemon, and the 3D graphics look like they're from the Wii era. Pokemon Colosseum was released 20 years ago and it somehow looks better than Scarlet and Violet do... and that game wasn't even made by Game Freak! This is one of, if not THE biggest multi-media franchise in the world right now, it should be a leader and an innovator with that status, and yet the franchise still functions like it's an 80's toy-driven franchise from Hasbro, when even franchises from that decade like Transformers and TMNT have gotten with the times. Face it, Pokemon NEEDS to improve, and yet for some reason, it's not, and at the rate things are going, I don't think it ever will...

I think the big thing that keeps bugging me about the Palworld vs Pokemon debate is so many people saying 'This is what Pokemon should have done already.' I wouldn't mind one bit if Pokemon made a more action/survival game as a spinoff similar to Palworld but I cannot stress enough how heartbreaking it would be to me if they just completely dropped turn-based gameplay for the mainline series. I understand it's not everyone's cup of tea, but being able to take my time, get to know what my mons can do, seeing them grow throughout the journey of the main game... It's Comfort Food gaming to me. I'd ESPECIALLY hate to see the state of Competitive Pokemon without turn-based combat, completely losing the strategic elements the system offers. I'm SO stoked folks who enjoy Third-Person-Shooter/Survival gameplay have a fun monster collector they can sink their teeth into... But I absolutely don't want mainline Pokemon to become that.

They can keep turn base game and still make another game based on the same ip. Like league of legends has TFT and trading card game other than their moba. Blizzard World of warcraft mmo, warcraft rts, blizzard moba, hearthstone.
The battle system in Palworld is garbage. The type system and move pool of pals are simplistic. There is no strategy, just spam whatever designated attack the pal has and hope it dmgs enough. The pal combat was definitely an afterthought compared to even something like the building mechanic. Palworld should fix that gameplay cause it gets boring really fast.
Actually, Woolliepop isn't a dog. Ive also seen people compare it to Alcreamie because of the sweets in its hair, which is also incorrect. It's a sheep made of cotton candy with peppermint horns.

I fully believe that they weren't thinking of Lucario when creating Anubis, I think they just made the Anubis from Craftopia into a Pal and stylised it as a throwback. they're both based off Anubis, so similarities are obviously going to happen, and in this sole case when it comes to pals and pokemon, this one is pure coincidence.

I think Killamari might be based on 2 things: 1: Cute mascot hats. The long tendrils and the droopy ear-like things and big eyes really make me think it wants to be worn. 2: Mindflayers: Mindflayers are squid-like brain eaters, and its Pal entry seems to suggest it does this very thing. The hat-like appearance might lure in unsuspecting victims into putting it on where its razor-blade teeth take care of the rest. It could also take ideas from Metroids which are also tentacled beings that eat brains, but the first two ideas presented are definitely more direct.
Yeah mindflayers are the first thing I thought of when I saw the lamprey mouth, it's not far off when you consider they're both squids and that d&d is one of the most popular games of all time (alongside Pokemon)
I will say in regards to the ‘Pokemon never tries anything different’ thing, there are tons of spinoffs that do try different genres with Pokemon, but they often never sell as much as the main series, and it’s not due to a lack of quality in most cases. I do agree GameFreak should take bigger steps towards evolving the series, Arceus is a prime example of what they can do if they choose to. But I can also understand that straying too far away from Pokemon’s core tends to result in numbers that don’t compare to the basic turn based battles. I do hope that this does push them to consider trying further innovation or genre experimentation. If Final Fantasy made a smooth jump from turn-based to another form of RPG, Pokemon can too.
I think the main problem with getting rid of turn based gameplay for pokemon is that at the end of the day its still made with kids in mind, and younger kids have an easier time with turn based gameplay, it allows kids to understand the game better and not get frustrated to the point of not wanting to play it, yes would it be a nice change for older gamers yes, but I think the turn based gameplay is what allows pokemon to be a game for everyone
@@manen2391something I suggested was simply improving the turn based to be more interesting but still core and easy to grasp for new players. Or better yet what many have suggested for years, difficulty settings. If they could pull off two game modes for two different difficulties for different players, it'd be perfect
I do believe it was said in a didyouknowgaming video that pokemon is purposefully made to be a game accessible to everyone. It has to be easy enough for kids to play and simple enough for old people to operate. Granted, on the old people side, we're talking mostly computer illiterate folks which was a lot of people 20-30 years ago so that might not apply as much now. On changing gameplay, it's extremely difficult because every single move is tied to the turn-based nature of the combat. Unlike Final Fantasy (and many similar games) where the turn-based combat fairly gives each side a chance to do their turns, Pokemon has turn-based combat where both sides choose their moves and the timing and order of actions is acted out. Pokemon battles then play more like Magic: The Gathering matches than traditional jrpg battles. (Put another way, pokemon battles simulate a full round of combat between the player and the enemy per action rather than doing a "my turn, your turn" thing.) Therein lies the difficulty (and also the reason why Pokemon Conquest made sense as a spin-off).
I hate they way people disrespect turn based RPGs. Pokemon being a Turn Based RPG isn't the issue, that's the series's genre, it's like being mad that mainline Mario games are platformers and not FPSs. Pokemon's issue is the severely sloppy incompetent management, half baked ideas, rushed releases, and unprofesional apathy. They are shaking up changes recently, and do have very good ideas at times, but never reach their potential due to being incompetent programmers/designers with impossible deadlines and work ethic. Scarlet/Violet have so many fantastic elements, but they're buried in a tangled mess of abyssmal coding, and half finished ideas, that ruin the experince for so many people and are a hard pill to swallow even for enjoyers. A rwal time Pokemon game cpuld be really cool, But SV's concepts were great and had creativity to them, issue is, it was never handled with any form of care, and was left a tangled broken mess without it's potential realized and so many glaring flaws weiging it down.
The hedgehog one is literally just a cartoon hedgehog though. Hell i have one right next to me that looks exactly the same and its from a grow your own crystal hedgehog kit.

@@Jibboe0214 The pal in question wasn't revealed until game release. It wasn't in original trailers so nobody can claim in was finalized back then. There's many questionable pals that were not in original trailer.
However, one could argue that by throwing so many different things from so many different places it creates its own original sort of identity. Like, the main gameplay loop revolves around using Pals, ethicaly or not, to advance industry. This is a, at least to my knowledge, never before seen type of game; even Ark's Dinosaur based collection system wasn't this indepth as the Dinos in Ark were mostly just for Transport and Boss battles with only a few dinosaurs being able to collect materials. So I would argue that its ability to successfully merge elements from many diverse sources gives its own sense of originallity.
@@MinervaMayhem07 Yeah, it can be argued Palworld is original/unique the same way something such as Undertale was in 2015. How many other turn based bullet hell mother influnced RPGs with SMT negotation can you name? Likewise, how many monster taming 3rd person shooter survival games qhere you get your brainwashed monsters to run factoriew for you with comedic tonap whiplash between adorable and morbid can you name. When you take enough things from such a large variety of seperate sources, The end result ends up being a unique concuction. No one has mixed all these spesific traits together before. That's how originaluty works, it's impossible to br entirely original, eveything has DNA of something else, so get creative with what you mix and add your own spice in the mix if you want a new experience. Plus, more of the same is perfectly fine anyway regardless.
Developer is based in Japan, and in their culture foxes are HEAVILY associated with fire and magic. With this in mind it is pretty normal for Japanese people to think "Hmmm... we need furry that is fire mage. What could the animal base for our design be? Obviously fox, man". So I think that Wixen design is not as much of a ripoff as you thought it was.
I definitely think Chillet is one of the more original ones. It's based on ferrets, of course, but it has completely different design and animation than furret. There vibes are also very distinctive, making them cute in different ways.
Chillet’s placement is by far the most egregious. I can definitely see the similarities to Furret. But they by no means look the exact same. At the very least, I’d put it in high C-tier. Also, some of your reasonings basically boil down to “this is mostly original but because it’s in Palworld it’s clearly copying Pokémon”.
I would moreso say all Yo-Kai Watch fans have already been through this situation where Pokémon fans called Yo-Kai Watch a Pokémon ripoff and bankrupted sales in the US even though it wasn't even a similar game to Pokémon.
15:10 I disagree on pokemon inventing those cloud thing. It's a Eastern portrayal of demi gods and deity who mostly appear in the sky riding clouds. Imagine sun wukong riding on cloud, a human from below can only see above torso because the flying nimbus is covering the legs. That's why one piece kaido dragon doesn't fly but actually generate cloud that he grabs and walk.
yeah I see a lot Asian Gods depicted standing or riding clouds. Heck Lakitu has been around since Mario 1 and I think Gaijin Goombah actually covered this way back when he was on gametheory.
@@jonathanflanagan1504 yes the Japanese has those demi god depicted that way. Normal oni is just giant brutes eating humans. These magical oni have "job" as gods. Creating thunder, lightning and rain. Google raijin and fujin. One piece Enel himself with his back drum circles and luffy gear fourth smoke ribbon are a reference to these gods.
When I first laid eyes on Direhowl, I immediately got this feeling of déjà-vu, that I had seen it somewhere and I just couldn't quite remember where... then you said "an anime wolf is an anime wolf" and it hit me: it looks like a super generic wolf-type monster from a fantasy manga (and I'm pretty sure there's a manga out there with a wolf that looks like 99% like Direhowl)
Personally while i believe the majority of the designs are meant to strike similarities for the sake of overall parody of the notion of pokemon. I very much enjoy this inspiration vs plagiarism tier list over others because you showed in the prior video that there are legitimate explanations to the origins of the Pals, and showed that regardless of the design itself there is thought present. You actually know what you are talking about when making these comparisons.
Couldn’t agree more with you, like there’s quite a few I would have personally moved down just based on comparing unique features in models (of the level of the Primarina hair), but there’s also a lot which are unique and its nice to see that recognised. There’s nothing I love more than fair critique. Actually there’s some I think he might have been too harsh on, and would have moved up in the tier list.
One of the best takeaways to have from a video like this is that if you're a fan of a property, you'll see it in the first person. I.e. every Pokemon is original and Palworld is stealing their designs. Except wait, Pokemon also have some too close for comfort rips from other media properties as well. Its okay to be derivative because chances are, even the most original ideas have roots from somwhere else.
Except he's a hypocrite. On Google Images, look up Pokemon Dragonquest Copy, one of the first few pictures shows DIRECT copies of Dragonquest creatures that Pokemon were. Koffing, Ghastly, Dragonite, etc were ALREADY copies themselves. I don't see him calling Pokemon out .
@@BS-gk2cb Ok buddy, pokemon ripping from other franchises is being a little to harsh. That's like saying Yo-Kai copied. One thing is using the same base/inspiration, Palwolrd does that for the majority of the designs and that's fine. As lockstin said, the designs that are clear copies are just the ones that appear on social media
Yeah, there's no way it wasn't intentional. It seems like they were going for the shock factor of pokemon-esque creatures and doing vile things with them and to them as a contrast the overly family friendly tones of pokemon/nintendo games.
Good luck to anyone in the future who's trying to make not just original fictional creatures, but good creature designs, without ripping off Pokemon, Digimon, or furries.
And based off of some comments, studio ghibli, YU-GI-OH, monster hunter, every fakemon ever created, final fantasy, classic American literature, every fantasy game ever created and every animal ever drawn in a certain artstyle.
Yeah, but judging by how insanely fast it was taken down I don't think the Game Freak devs are unaware of Palworld, if they had any precedents to sue they would have already.
Even if it was a dog, I've never seen Slurpuff/Swirlix as dogs tbh. The fact that anyone would is complete news to me lol, so I'd say that one's a pretty big reach when there are many much more egregious examples.
The people saying "Oh I can't wait for Nintendo to sue Palworld" really don't understand. There was the whole extremely strict Japanese copyright laws you mentioned in the video, but also the original trailer for the game came out around 2 and a half to 3 years before early access dropped with many of the "just copy paste" pals being shown off in that trailer including several of the extremely bad examples that aren't even in the early access. That means GameFreak had about 3 years to do anything but chose not to, most likely cause they can't
It is kinda funny, though, that when the Pokémon Company announced they were investigating a game that was infringing on their copyright, everyone thought it was about Palworld, when in fact it was about a completely different game that was way more blatant. The most vocal people in both communities are annoying. Pokémon fans being way too territorial over the idea of monster collection. Palworlders being weirdly gleeful over the idea that this game is somehow going to topple Pokémon, despite being a completely different experience. Thankfully both groups are just minority factions, and most people are just having fun
@@Gloomdrake Exactly, me and my friends are enjoying the hell out of playing Palworld together but we still make jabs at some of the designs for being just way too similar to pokemon. Although in some cases the similar ideas for the designs I do quite like, such as Petallia and Lyleen who give a very Lilligant vibe which, if my pfp didn't clue you in on, I love the Lilligant line. Overall though I feel some arguments are extreme stretches, like even Lockstin called out Menasting having a Giratina-like mask which I don't 100% see, it just looks like a hard mask-like structure, and so saying the design isn't original because of that when thats like 5% of the design at most is very dumb.
My only counterpoint to that would be that, if they wanted to shore up their case, they'd want to wait for the game to be released so they'd have access to the models. Then they'd be able to study them and determine the extent (if any) of any plagiarism. A more solid case backed by model evidence can only be made once those assets have been released and TPCi/Gamefreak have the ability to actually analyse them properly and put a legal case together if they thought they needed to. So to do that they've only had, like, a week at this point, not 3 years.
Thank you for pointing out that Grimtale is based on the Cheshire Cat. I've seen other videos, like 2 or 3, and they keep saying it's Galarian Meowth. Both Grimtale and the Cheshire Cat are purple cats with yellow eyes and an evil smile. It's the first thing I saw when I seen Grimtale.

Yeah because that’s one of the main reasons why Gamefreak said the national dex was cut. They lied and the game still looked bad. Palworld is a monster catching anime game. Some design tropes and body plans just work better than others so that’s why they look similar even if they can be more different for some examples.
if what i heard is correct the tinkaton looking one should be higher. palworld had a trailer that showed it off before we knew about tinkaton's existance. whom copied whoom here?

As an artist, the only two that actually make me cringe are Azerobe and Verdash. Verdash sucks in totality, they mangled Cinderace in the worst possible way. Azerobe just really needs different hair. I'm an art graduate, and as such I'm used to appropriation art - literally rephotographing paintings to remove them from context in some cases - being a hotly debated topic but one that is, even if you hate it, considered valid. Most of the mashups and fusions and the heavily inspired pals are still inherently creative - Broncherry is "What If Meganium was good" for example. Fengulope goes in such a different direction to Cobalion while still making people think of it. Katress makes you think of Mismagius without even remotely resembling it. Dinossom feels like goodra but uses the snail tendrils as vines. It's like a collage made of famous paintings, like listening to Daft Punk and picking out the samples. Greater then the sum of their parts. Hell, I'd go to bat for Boltmane - There's enough different (The head is smaller, the face more thin and predatory, the rear legs are completely different, the mane is more slicked back to make it look faster and more agile, It manages to look more predatory) that it calls to mind Luxray by keeping the main body the same general proportions, but After that first glance *It isn't*. It's just another big electric lion. Verdash fails at this. It's the laziest 1:1 body with things stapled on. You see it and there's not a moment you don't think "Green Cinderace". You've put him in a jesters outfit. It doesn't pass the squint test at all. Plus it's just *ugly*. That all said, If you want to know how close designs can come and still be fine, Look up the Digimon Sparrowmon. It's literally a yellow Latias with the Mega forms wing claws and more details. The body and head shape are super close. Everyone's going after Jetragon, but the true Lati Ripoff has been going strong since *2010*.

Like, both Pangoro and the Kung Fu grass panda Pal are panda-inspired, but you can clearly see differences. Chillet is a blue Furret. 38:53 as opposed to a small whale? It's like you say, Pokemon doesn't own concepts and "giant flying whale" is actually quite generic when you search for it.
Yea...some of them started to go out there. I thought it was going to be how original they were compared to Pokemon, but then they started comparing them to other things. And then a lot of their lower placements were literally "It would be fine in any other game but because it's in Palworld, it's a blatant rip-off."
Yeah I got really confused towards the end. He started rating things based on concepts, some pokemon hasn't even done but he still rated them low. Pokemon does 'just an animal' all the time, bur he rated the kirin Pal low because it is 'just a kirin'... even though pokemon never did that creature before. Others were just 'this is the same animal as a pokemon. It isn't actually like any pokemon, but..." The t pot elephant and the electric dog ones confused the heck out of me. Somewhere someone has come up with the same concept. The execution is what matters. The other ones were comparing body parts. Like, yeah. Most fox will have a evee like tail because evee just has a fox tail, and looks like a fox. Whalelored is just a big whale. Furret is just a ferret. Anything based on those animals will look similar.
I thought it was pretty clear from the start. Yes, a good portion of the comparison is doing direct Pokemon comparisons, but he also brings in things from other franchises and otherwise bland or uninspired/unoriginal ideas. That's what the tiers are.
I see only hardcore Pokémon fans malding over it. Is this some kind of "both sides bad" ? Because most Palworld fans don't really cared till Pokekids got salty and started bashing the game.
As I am playing palword, I usually frequent the reddit of the game pretty often for help, mainly for resources or breeding help, and yeah, the palword fans can get pretty toxic.
@ZoomerStasi Some of them act like this game is gonna be the big pokemon killer, when we all know that's not true. And whenever you have genuine criticisms for the game they go "oooh, look at the salty pokemon fanboy" it's so irritating

Both sides are toxic, but Palworld fans are even more so imo.
Why do I feel that like half of C tier should be either in B tier according to the descriptions at the start of the video, or that there needs to be another tier in between B and C?
For real...a lot of the lower placed Pals were literally placed so low because of "In any other game, this design would be okay...but because it's specifically in Palworld, it's a blatant rip-off."

the diference is that, yokai watch was "destroyed" by the community because it was the first ds monster taming game that got out of the monster taming bubble. There were no design controversies, just a genre that people did not understand at the time, could exist without being pokemon.
God I had forgotten about yo kai watch it was so fun. I got through like 90% of the first games content and the only reason I didn't finish the second game was because my 2ds kept crashing and loosing my progress. Most definitely a game I would by a pc port of with zero hesitation.
Honestly, as someone that likes both Pokemon as a concept and the designs, and Palworld, this is a great video. You did a great job being in the middle ground of the arguments. As a Palworld fan? I wish they change some of the most damning models or discard them entirely (LOOKING AT YOU, VERDASH, I DON'T EVEN LIKE CINDERACE'S BASE DESIGN AND YOU STILL MADE IT UGLIER)
NO no, Verdash can be the Sepak Takraw to Cinderaces football. I actually want them to go on the route of visually close to Pokemon but characteristically unique. Much like what they did to Lovander VS Salazzle.
I think it's parodying and I love it, it scratches several itches for me. You know my collectors itch, my survival itch and my exploration itch.. love it!
And now for my post video comment: I agreed with most of what Gmoggin said, but the ONE thing that made me roll my eyes was at the very end: slavery. I know its a meme, i know theres a video of the assault rifle sweatshop assembly line.. but that's not the actual game. Sure, you CAN set your base to work super hard and never feed your Pals, but no one does that. Watch any video, and youll see pepple losing their minds rhat you can pet the Pals, or that theu help you craft stuff. If you let their sanity and hunger drop, it affects their productivity, so hardcore minmax gamers arent going to let that happen. And i dont know many slave owners that give their slaves luxury beds, hot tubs, cook them steaks and cakes, or, y'know, arm them. You have squirrels and monkeys with fully automatic weapons. If they wanted to revolt, they would rebolt. Its not called Slaveworld, its called Palworld.
I mean, you realize you can also catch humans, force them to work for you, and sell them right? Do you have to? No, of course not, but it is an option, which is why that's something you'd need to take out for it to be a pokemon game. It doesn't fit with Nintendo's image.
In my gameplay, I unlocked the control tower. "Cool, what does it do?" Build it, see that it gives you options to make your pals work at an inhuman rate. Deconstruct it, never touch it again
7:05 Fun fact: SMT, Dragon Quest, Digimon and Yugioh all had dogu monsters before Claydol existed. There's also Clayf from Bakugan and Maiden Ruin in Yo-Kai Watch 3 who is _not_ an Iron Maiden.
I feel comparing palworld to the release of scarlet and violet is the only bad part of this video, while there could be some similarities for a few, the game I feel is to recent for pokemon from those games to be a proper reference to draw from.
Yo-Kai Watch was released the same year as ORAS and outsold it in both Japan and the US. The very next game that they released was Sun and Moon, a pair of games that drastically changed up the main story beats of prior Pokemon games, introduced much deeper plot lines, regional forms, ultra beasts, z-moves, a very noticeable change to how GF designs new Pokemon for a region, and so much more. USUM is just that but even more. This will definitely light a fire under GF. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
I loved SV but it was hard carried by the plot. Hope ZA doesn't have the same technical problems and isn't just held together by duct tape and the fanbase's love for megas.
At the end of the day, everyone on both sides should agree that nobody deserves death threats, doxxing or any other kind of harassment over this

Ameterasu from Okami is NOT based on a kitsune! The kitsune does appear in the game, but Ameterasu is the name of the sun goddess and the form she has taken is a wolf, not a fox. About Chillet: how would you make a ferret creature? ferrets look a certain way regardless. there's no way around it, it will look like Furret in shape
Give it horns and claws.
Ferrets don't look exactly like furret. Chillet exaggerates the exact same features furret does.

So there should have plenty of sheep creatures that roll around in other media right?
Rolling on purpose?
My favorite thing about Anubis is trying to point out something actually matches Lucario aside from the silhouette
The legs have a different number of joints and different pants. its hand have human fingers and arm guards.
Or, you know
Bothering to literally take 10 seconds googling to see what Anubis is.
Dude doesn't seem to realize the Pal Anubis is just cutified Anubis, the Egyptian God.
So is Lucario but Anubis is more... literally just Anubis.
@@aohige Exactly that.
To be honest, I think Anubis is a better design than Lucario. For one thing, its mouth is actually ON its snout instead of BELOW it.
Woolipop is a sheep, not a dog, it has horns on the head, that's why they have a completely different texture from the rest of the hair
I mean I called it a candy mareep but it's still adorable even if it's looks like type swapped mareep.
Exactly. Blazehowl is also not a dog.

It's living cotton candy, no one tell Willy Wonka.

In defense of Chillet, both it and Furret are basically just big ferrets so I wouldn't say that Chillet is just a pokemon when the pokemon is just an animal.

They should actually do more of these 99% copy Pals. The Verdash copy is actually a 10 for me as I prefer Sepak Takraw to Football, so I have this head-canon that he weaves ratan balls for his attacks.
This one right here.

If you don't mind me asking, what changes would that be?

1: Cute mascot hats.
A rwal time Pokemon game cpuld be really cool,
But SV's concepts were great and had creativity to them, issue is, it was never handled with any form of care, and was left a tangled broken mess without it's potential realized and so many glaring flaws weiging it down.
The hedgehog one is literally just a cartoon hedgehog though. Hell i have one right next to me that looks exactly the same and its from a grow your own crystal hedgehog kit.
Exactly, the pal looks like a hedgehog. It's not a "blatant rip-off" of the Pokémon just because that's based on a hedgehog, too.
Sounds like your kit ripped off Pokemon
Do I have to bring up Seel the pokemon is LITERALLY a seal? Or Ratatta and Raticate are literally just rats? Butterfree is just a butterfly? Krabby is just an uninspired crab along with Kinglar? Horsea being a literal seahorse?
Pokemon is littered with 'cartoon animal designs with 0 alteration' and that was me only using Gen 1 and not even the full 150.
I work at a pet store we sell a particular brand of toy called "fluff and tuff" they have a hedgehog toy that is a great example of how basic hedgehogs look. They toy lacks legs and you could slap a bush on it and sell it as shaymin.
I love how measured this list is with mythology in consideration and benefit of the doubt applied.
And then chillet sits at the bottom as if Gamefreak owns the likeness to an actual, real life ferret.
This is definitely not giving benefit of the doubt.
There are definitely some similarities that you can rule it was “inspired” by Pokémon but I feel like some of them are just concepts or creatures from myth that Pokémon obviously took from somewhere else too like people say lucario and Anubis. Bro it’s literally taken from Egypt mythology Anubis it isn’t just a Pokémon thing also chillet is a ice dragon ferret they look similar because it is based on the same thing Pokémon doesn’t have claim over all ferret lookalike creatures
18:42 this alwas bugs me because floppy was shown long before scarlet and violet came out
Yeah I would go so far as to say that claiming any Pal is based on a gen 9 pokemon is always a stretch at best, the Pal designs were likely all finalized well before Scarlet and Violet launched.
I will say that the Pokémon in SCVT were leaked ahead of release
@@BlackRaveBow By how much? The design in particular was already finalized 2 years ago. Was the dex Really leaked that early? I only started seeing dex leaks a couple months before release.

Palworld is a hodgepodge of all sorts of other games mixed together, it isn't all that original, however it is still very fun to play.
@@MinervaMayhem07
Yeah, it can be argued Palworld is original/unique the same way something such as Undertale was in 2015.
How many other turn based bullet hell mother influnced RPGs with SMT negotation can you name?
Likewise, how many monster taming 3rd person shooter survival games qhere you get your brainwashed monsters to run factoriew for you with comedic tonap whiplash between adorable and morbid can you name.
When you take enough things from such a large variety of seperate sources,
The end result ends up being a unique concuction.
And I mean, he knows where fire foxes came from, he explained it in a previous video, THAT'S LITERALLY THE NAME OF A BROWSER FOR GOODNESS'S SAKE.
I definitely think Chillet is one of the more original ones. It's based on ferrets, of course, but it has completely different design and animation than furret. There vibes are also very distinctive, making them cute in different ways.
"A fluffy dog" >Clearly a ram
I will be honest, I saw a poodle. I thought the horns were hair pins or something.
12:17 All Yokai Watch fans known this Pal is just the Yokai Sheen. Even has the same damn hat flame.
Now that we know they will take designs from other monster capture games, we should look into it.
Yes, it looks exactly like it with minor tweaks!!

I would moreso say all Yo-Kai Watch fans have already been through this situation where Pokémon fans called Yo-Kai Watch a Pokémon ripoff and bankrupted sales in the US even though it wasn't even a similar game to Pokémon.
Yea I noticed that too, I still want to play Palworld whenever I will get the chance
Let's not look at one part of the design (proceeds to look at one part of the design specifically the talons)
Just look at Goku riding on flying Nimbus
He was referring to them specifically also being oni though, wasn't he?
Right but do they all go shirtless with cloud hair and no lower body but the cloud?
yeah I see a lot Asian Gods depicted standing or riding clouds.
It reminds me of the monster rancher Tiger breed, but without the horns obv.
It looks like Wolf Link
It looks like Wolf Link
I mean, it could be argued that Direhoul is Twilight Princess Wolf Link form. It's very generic.
And based off of some comments, studio ghibli, YU-GI-OH, monster hunter, every fakemon ever created, final fantasy, classic American literature, every fantasy game ever created and every animal ever drawn in a certain artstyle.
a good thing to remember about that mod that got taken down was that it was behind a paywall which is why it was taken down i believe
Yeah, but judging by how insanely fast it was taken down I don't think the Game Freak devs are unaware of Palworld, if they had any precedents to sue they would have already.
I'm pretty sure it was also full of models ripped direct from either Sword and Shield or Scarlet and Violet, which is probably why it got the axe.

@@the_godbodor7026 Michael Bay Optimus Prime has the same face mask thing Girantina does, so I'm not gonna make a fuss over it
My only counterpoint to that would be that, if they wanted to shore up their case, they'd want to wait for the game to be released so they'd have access to the models.
What was the completely different game?@@Gloomdrake

Halfway through the video I couldn't tell if you were rating them based on how similar they were to pokemon or similar to an idea that already exists.

"Cool, what does it do?"
Build it, see that it gives you options to make your pals work at an inhuman rate.
18:40 LOCKSTIN NOOO FLOPIE EXISTED BEFORE TINKATON!
wait what? damn that is funny.
I feel comparing palworld to the release of scarlet and violet is the only bad part of this video, while there could be some similarities for a few, the game I feel is to recent for pokemon from those games to be a proper reference to draw from.
Wait where was Flopie seen before the SV release
@@johnedwards4313 From memory it was in early trailers.
If anything, I wonder how the game will look after early access.
Not only that, but the RotomDex had an uncanny resemblance to the talking ghost from Yo-Kai Watch!
GameFreak undoubtedly started working on the next Gen before Palworld dropped.
I loved SV but it was hard carried by the plot. Hope ZA doesn't have the same technical problems and isn't just held together by duct tape and the fanbase's love for megas.
