Sameee, I taught the badges where just there to show the Gym's Type, Not the actual badge Especially since you get them for the Titans and Team Star, Wich doesn't make sence on why they look just like Gym badges
For me the most upsetting thing about gyms was in gen 8, they designed a gym uniform for each of the gyms (plus some extra) and you weren't allowed to wear them in the actual gyms, because you were forced to wear the standard gym uniform...
That actually makes sense though. The whole game is designed like a socer match. You have to wear your own colours, can't wear the colours of the home team you are fighting against. But you can represent them when not playing against them.
Dated response i know which was kind of silly but i still say that was a nice step up to push customization by not only having `casual wear` but `competitive wear` you could customize. Which was definitely a step up where you were forced to wear very generic one-note type of outfits for riding pokemon i believe was in not only sun/moon but also when wormhole hoping for the ultra version and the same occured for `riding` latios/latias i think in ORAS? Or maybe that was just Rayquaza specifically, thogh might of been cool if you could of wore those outfits specifically as wear, though maybe they did, maybe they didnt, i never played those specific titles directly since i clocked out of pokemon mainline titles after X/Y and besides a few nit picks like legends arceus, i didnt return to the mainline fold till scarlet/violet where i absolutely wasted 60 dollars. Hell i was not even aware of the `badges` of scarlet/violet because i was already half bored out of my head from all the other porblems. Which knowing now that Sword/shield did a interesting trick with its badges combining together into a `coin` just like its british counterparts mimicking a coat of arms is very cool indeed for subtle gimmicks. Though as for certain other badges getting dulled down, i can atleast see some of them being more to look like fanciful pins on say a suit you would wear, instead of carrying in a case, sort of like how in the pokemon anime in the early days especially, trainers like ash would literally wear the badges on the inside of his jacket instead of a badge case instead.
@@steverempel8584 "I'm Team Protagonist!" Different outfits are worn for Home & Away matches, and change with sponsorships from various companies. So if you were wearing the dark type gym outfit, you would be endorsing the dark type gym while your team number and name would remain the same. Of course, Nintendo didn't implement different outfits in cutscenes due to time constraints (I reckon).
I think the soullessness of the badges actually fits the corporate feel of Paldea. I mean FS Larry is just told "okay you're a different type today chop chop" and he just goes with it
Also that the badges are given as part of the country's university system. So theyre essentially diaplomias or certificates, no wonder they look so formal.
I really really hate the school/corporate style that Paldea has. It's just so... bleh. SV probably has my least favorite aesthetic in the whole series.
I kinda like how each game has the gyms exist in a different context. In the older games, it’s just:these gyms exist and you fight them because reasons. In Alola you’re basically doing a hybrid of the traditional trials and new gym challenge that the professor is trying to introduce. In Galar, it’s literally a whole sporting event with huge arenas and fans that you have to be invited to. In Paldea, it’s part of a school assignment along with a bunch of other leaders that are basically more gym battles. The battles in each gen now have a different ‘flavor’, the huge sporting arenas in SWSH compared to the more personal but still spectator worth ones in SV.
I'm not gonna say the type icon choice is truly justified. However, it's important to note that as the beginning of this video states, it is for kids and we're older now. Not only that, but Gen 8's Diamond/Pearl remakes are actually the first to introduce the new icons for each of the 18 types. It's about time for the revamp and to see them acknowledge it in the badges for Gen 9 is fitting. Also remember that this is the first time we've been able to get more than 8 badges since Johto connected with Kanto to give us 18. It's also greatly underappreciated by so many people that they gave the regular gyms a unique challenge besides the gym battle, non-gym adventures, and the option to complete them in ANY ORDER YOU WANT. I'm not a fan of the school theme or uniforms, but I can understand why they'd use the school plotline to make the badges more like certificates of completion with official and unofficial stamps.
Also, someone mentioned that as you go through Kalos, the seasons change the farther in Vaniville starts in Spring, and by Cyllage and Shalour, youre in Summer, as theyre coastal. Then, when you get to Laverre City and its surrounding routes, its Fall/Autumn. And as you approach Anistar and Snowbelle, its winter.
@@amirulamani1487Would be cool if the seasons did change in-game though, with a pseudo-calendar system in-game that changes seasons after every 2 badges and then you can backtrack to previous routes that now have new Pokemon and stuff, would make the "Pokemon journey" really feel like a journey with it taking place during a little less than a year in-universe.
There's a follow-up you can do here: In Galar every type has a logo that is utilised in the jerseys, every Gym Leader uses them, Avery and Clara use two unused ones and the other ones, you can still buy for yourself. I wish these symbols were the logos
All the sparks from the Voltage Badge meeting in the center like that makes me think it's inspired by the fact that Lumiose City takes place in the _center_ of Kalos, with the sparks themselves being the different paths that lead to there.
I think one really neat thing about the kalos badge (im personally playing Y right now and im about to fight the Snowbelle Gym) is that every one of the badges has a kind of gemstone incorporated in them (that clear bit), symbolizing the emphasis on beauty in Jalos (gemstones, jewels)
@@beckhampang191 I’ve always considered the amber blocks, garnet/topaz fist, aquamarine leaf, and citrine triangle to be the gems because in the xy games you can rotate the badges 360 degrees and those parts look like gemstones
I think most of the creativity in regards to the badges in Gen 9 was put towards making unique pictures rather than making unique badges, so it's moreso a case of whether or not the player appreciates the fun character interaction more or less than they do the inspiration for the badge design.
As someone with French as my mother language, this video was definitely a wild ride. Though the wildest parts were definitely the Fairy and Psychic badge explanations; I'm... really surprised that for Laverre city, Lockstin hasn't mentioned that... well... "verre" literally means glass, after talking about stained glass for the whole segment. Or how the pearl in the badge wasn't mentioned at all, since I'm pretty sure pearls are fairly popular jewelry in France? And for the Psychic badge section... well, let's just say that mispronunciation of anise was probably the worst of the video, and it's actually an English word lol
Cool to know just a bit more about Witchcrafter Madame Verre having read this. The Magistus have directly dealt with glass. Maybe glass has an alchemic significance in some ways.
Paldea's badges are probably so simple to imply a standardized feeling, which informs the simple designs of Arven's cheaper looking Totan badges, and the intentional transformation of the Team Star badges, as stated in lore. It provides a consistent reward for progression regardless of route while giving each their own feel with minimal modelling needs, and also tying the region all together. It also informa the more beurocratic nature of the Paleea League itself, similar to Galar's sports/trophy thing.
I can give one defense of the Paldea gym badges: they're "soulless" because the pokemon league is a corporation of sorts and the gym leaders are just employees. They didn't design the badges, they were put out by the soulless corporation
What I find interesting is that like Wolfrick other gym leaders have families that never show up in any form. The first gym leader in Galar has a bunch of siblings in the concept art, but there’s no mention of them anywhere else.
Sounds like the buildings in Galar and Paldea. Barren due to time constraints/ limited workforce. I want to walk in buildings and meet npcs with non-generic dialogue, gym leaders with stories (though honestly Milo’s large family and single absent facial feature does give me Brock vibes) and pursue side quests out of curiosity rather than to get whatever reward I need to enjoy the game more..
Ya through concept art, we find out that Melanie has 3-4 kids besides Gordie. Could be an interesting video in it's own right, Gym Leaders who have family mentioned or appear in their own right throughout various media.
@@tobysinbadI only found him having a brother, but Bede having alternate clothes you never see her wear or Opal being young are things I wish we got referenced too
Given that 3/8 of the Kalos badges are named after their types. I had ideas for new names. * Viola’s badge was a bit hard to think of a new name but given it resembles a beetle, perhaps the Elytra badge could go well, seeing as the elytra is the hardened forewing of beetles * Maybe they could’ve called the Fairy Badge, the Fae badge instead given that Fae’s another word for fairy. * The Psychic Badge could be called the Seer or Clairvoyance Badge with how Olympia could see into the future. 3:33 I thought of this idea where we could do a variety of tasks to get the gym badge. Like perhaps the gyms are closed and you have to help the gym leader with a task. Like for example, helping them get through an area, fending off goons from an villain team while they're busy with something important, recovering a Pokemon of theirs from a villain, getting medicine for them, battle alongside them against a Totem Pokemon and its goons, etc. Then during the post game, you can go through the reopened gyms and fight them like a traditional team.
for the psychic one i was thinking the Pythos badge because thats the name of the snake that occupied the oracle of delphi in greek mythology and the smoke trail kind of can be seen as a snake
Clemont's badge to me looks a lot like one of the symbols used in electrical engineering schematics. With this it seems fitting, as Clermont is an electrical engineer. This would also explain the lighning bolts coming out the side. He is an inventor with an electrical specialty, so his badge is a stylized symbol used in electrical engineering.
Also reminiscent of the fact that Paris is a circular city with the Eiffel tower being the brightest tower in the city at the center and reaching out with light.
The thing about Wulfric's badge Is that there is actually water inside it. I think it's really awesome that a gym badge has something organic inside of it.
I can think of one defense for the Galar gyms. Instead of a fully fleshed out badge, they all have gym logos that have more thought put into them and if they were put into a badge format, they would look like the badges of the other regions. It makes sense for them to put more focus on the logo side of things as the whole gym scene in Galar is all reminiscent of sport leagues.
I thought it was cool how in Kalos, the gym badges start out bronze (with the bug badge) then go to silver (with the cliff badge and half of the rumble badge) and finally all the badges go gold (with the other half of the rumble badge and all the badges following). I personally would have liked to see more bronze and silver badges but the idea was there and is still cool.
Honestly given that Paldea is mostly focused on its school with the gym challenge as one of the things the students can focus on, it makes sense that all their badges are the same. They’re like standardized tests, so you get a standardized reward. Plus, no offense, but there really are only so many ways you can name a badge before you run out of good names that can be understood by most players (zephyr excluded). Decided to cut it off early I guess.
Hopefully they bring some soul back in the future, but I do agre, it does make sense for them to be very plain and standardized since they are "School test/reward/whatever marks."
@@RyushoYosei especially since they canonically rotate gyms out in the region. If a new leader becomes strong enough, they can replace a different one like how there was a fight for a fighting/psychic gym.
It also makes sense as the gym challenge is not very popular in Paldea as it is in other regions, meaning that, canonically, they probably didn't have the budget to make each badge unique.
I'm surprised you went with stained glass speech for the Fairy Badge but didn't mentioned how Laverre could also pull from "verre", the french for "glass" (even more fitting of the badge)
0:16 Honestly the Pokemon are the one place I'd say Game Freak has kept the same top quality. It's in the games themselves where things are lacking. And I wouldn't be surprised if the top executives of TPC were doing that consciously. Good designs for the Pokemon themselves also helps merch sales, the anime, and the trading card game. You get more bang for your buck.

Now I’m curious, what if you did a video on each Alola trial? Like, why you have to do X thing to get Y pokemon to come out and fight you. Maybe there’s some sort of traditional Hawaiian activity weaved into at least one or two of these little challenges?
Tbh it might have been a really good idea to make the SV badge’s designs after the main pokemon Ex: Fire Badge would be based off fire revavroom (or torkoal?), Rock would be based off Klawf, Bug would be based off teddiursa
I think due to knowing the tyme used to be a gym leader but there is rock gym the types are constantly changing and the changing or gym leaders could have made making specific names for each type hard to do Arvin even says they he is giving you gym replica badges which are types that are not in the gym rotation
Regarding the opinion on Gen 9, I always thought the Paldea Badges were designed to be like stamps for passports or postcards since Scarlet and Violet focus so much on travel and exploration, especially since the other story paths also give you badges. Also, each of the photos you get after completing a badge kinda look like postcards.
The badges are literally even pinned to the commemorative photos you take after earning each one. It wouldn’t surprise me if, in-universe, the Gym Leaders (or at least their type specialties) change periodically, leading to the League having spares on hand for the various types that could be represented at any given time. We already kinda see that with Larry anyway.
i haven`t play Gen 9, but the badges look like these boy scout badges you sew onto your sash to display. Which was propably the idea with the school theming.....
Badges aren't important. Sure, the designs are cool & you need them to progress through the game, but (& this is just my opinion) it's the story & the journey the game takes you on that's the highlight of any Pokémon game. Meeting new people & Pokémon, having battles, customizing, training & just having an adventure. There's always something new to experience with Pokémon. I think that's why I've loved it for so long (since I was 4, now 30). It's become a part of who I am as a person & yeah, it has it's flaws, but what in this life doesn't? It's still an amazing game full of new wonders & fun! This may not seem like much to some, but for me, it's a lifetime of memories that I will cherish forever...badge creativity or not.
For me, I like the Unova Gym Badges a lot especially the golden coating outside of it. They look like Trainer accessories. Gen 1 badges are not bad too.
I never thought about it this way until I heard your description of galar's badges at 21:07, but maybe the fact that you have a bunch of separate pieces that come together to become a coin is a reference to how you can arrange the six British coins to make The Royal Shield
The thing is, the new games have had significantly more focus on the idea of the pokemon league being an official, organized... well, organization, so it makes a bit of sense that the designs are a lot more uniform. Personally I blame Geeta
So, I’d agree that the visual designs of a lot of the badges have gotten a little sterile. On the other hand, I think we got spoiled by localizations from the first two Pokemon generations when it comes to the names here in the West. The reality is that the original names of the Kanto badges were just the colors of the badges in Japanese. That’s even more generic than the lowest effort “type badge” format a lot of the games have ended up using. As for Johto, some of the badge names were changed there too from the original Japanese. Our Buzz Badge was actually the first “insect badge.” The Glacier Badge was simply “ice badge.”
The Voltage Badge is based on Lumiose Tower. All of the lightning bolts direct at the center of the town, where the tower is, the shape of the rounded triangle resembles the shape of the tower as you go away from the narrow middle, this seems pretty obvious to me.
Love the touch of having your videos playing in the background in the opening. XD Also I do agree that it is kind of sad the badges don't look really good in gens 8 and 9.
I do kind of miss the uniqueness of the different badges, but I’m not gonna go into a depressive spiral over it. Personally I think out of the 3d games so far I think sv is the best. The different story paths are fun and I think it’s cool how they come together at the end, a lot of the Pokémon have great designs, and it has possibility the best rival/friends group of the 3d games.
5:11 it’s not that they are devoid of soul it’s that it fits the uniformity of the game since the region is centered around a school where you wear a school uniform and the Pokémon league is an exam So they are like school badges or boy/girl scout badges I think that’s a cool concept
I mean, honestly? Who really cares about the badges themselves? I remember there being a feature of the DS games where you could open your badge case to polish them. What I don't remember is ever so much as dusting them off because I had other more interesting things to do. Like going to the next town to conquer it's gym, beating the regional team, catching all the Pokemon in the Pokedex, and watching paint dry. You know, fun stuff.
@@formlessone8246 I remember the badge polishing mechanic, it was in the gen 4 games, and I recently learned it’s also in the first black and white games. I would polish the badges to max shininess whenever the thought crossed my mind, but I have ocd so maybe I thought about it more then others. Though I do agree a bit that the badges really aren’t all that important as anything other then a sign of progression, and if they were the last bit of soul the franchise had then there wasn’t much soul to begin with.
I do like in Sw/Sh that each Gym has their own symbol, separate from the badges. Like Kabu's symbol is a Centiskorch helmet with the fire Kanji, and Pierce's is a monstrous jaw, which when turned on its side is the Team Yell logo Interesting stuff
I greatly appreciate this perspective on badges, and it makes me rethink how I want to do my badges for the Fakemon region I'm creating. Thanks Lockstin for the valuable input!
Whenever someone says "It was always that way, You just didn't notice because X", That's ALWAYS a coping mechanism. It's true that getting older makes people able to recontextualize the past, but that's only 1/3rd of the equation.
The only consistently goos thing about pokemon is 1. The music 2. The pokemon designs 3. And the human designs Everything else has fallen so flat lately, i couldn't even be bothered to play the violet dlc, or play it anymore past the meh story
Clemont's badge is probably a retro voltage gauge (or measuring device in general). The rivets on the edge make it look like the lens/cover is bolted into a machine.
16:43 I've had pho at a Vietnamese place before, it's really good. The instant pho I got at a Costco near me after that, not so much. Masala chai sounds good, I hope I can try it one day, I've never seen it at any of the Asian places here in LA I've been to so far though.
I gotta say, that opening monologue is entirely correct. Pokémon hasn't lost its soul, and it's always been pretty damn easy (though we thought it was harder because we were the kids in the target demographic at the time), but what HAS happened is late stage capitalism has squashed the series for every ounce of money it can make. The problem is, and will always be, corporate greed deciding to cut corners and shove games out because they want their stupid money that doesn't even go to the people who worked overtime upon overtime for the games. I want fewer Pokémon games that come out less frequently, look fine, and result in the workers being paid much better wages (at least 5x what they're being paid right now) with less overtime, and I'M NOT KIDDING.
@@gabrielgoes0 Yeah, yeah, yeah, big arms. Go eat your favorite meal, talk to a friend of yours, and spend time with your pet, if you have one. Come back to me when you're in less of a mood to make fun of people.
The Voltage Badge is so pretty! Idk why the base is a triangle, but the rest of it makes perfect sense. It looks like rays of light, which electricity can emit, and because Lumiose City's whole theme is light. The city's light requires electricity, as we see in the in-game blackout. The badge has one of the most unique silhouettes, too.
To better explain the Lumiose city badge (since pokemon y was my second pokemon game): Lockstein pretend the badge is 3D!(3d was big in pokemon games at the time) Yeah that "lens flare" design is actually Lumiose city tower if a bird was looking down on it. (because thunderbolts/ thunderstorms come form the sky) "But why is the badge's base a triangle Kat?" I got 2 reasons for that: 1. Its taking after the triangular caution sign warning planes not to crash into the tower(because pilots can get blinded by light. Ever heard of the Hindenburg blimp crash? 0.o ) 2. Another thing it can be cautioning is electricity! (Both in the gym itself, powering said gym and not to mention bolts of lightning attracted to the tower itself)
The Badge series has genuinely made me glad to have started making my own Fan Region, honestly. One big thing that I also wish to note is Vivillon keeps getting its name botched. It's not evil, why is everyone making it a villain?
I assume part of the Vivillon thing is people sort of making a joke that it's Pokemon 666 (if you aren't aware 666 is the number associated with the Devil in Christianity). Besides that though, I think it really is just people trying to pronounce it and just saying it random ways based on how they understand grammar and such. Also yes, I know it's supposed to be Vih-Vee-On because it's based on a Papillon (Paa-Pee-On) Butterfly, but even I still say Vih-Vihl-On.
@@lordofninjas1 Oh so sort of like how Giratina isn't actually pokemon Satan and Zygarde isn't actually pokemon Loki? @@MattwosRandomNonContent not exactly. People make "evil" jokes about Vivillon simply because it's #666 and it's name can kinda be a play on that, whereas the "Giratina is Satan" thing is more based on what Giratina is and concepts surrounding him and such, things like being an entity created by God that later betrays him and is cast out into their own realm (Hell for Satan, the Distortion World for Giratina) and stuff like that. I've not heard the "Zygarde is Loki" thing or "Yveltal being Hraesvelgr" thing, I have however heard of them being the bird that sits atop Yggdrasil and the serpent that eats at the roots of Yggdrasil, with Xerneas being the Deer that dance around Yggdrasil. That said, I could see Yveltal also having a basis in Hraesvelgr, since Zygarde seems to be based on both Nidhogg and Jormangandr. Also, while I appreciate the Doctor Who reference, it's not necessary nor common practice on RUclips to sign comments like its a forum post, because its not a forum post.
@@lordofninjas1 Giratina didn't betray anyone. That's a load of BS. The _factual_ truth of the matter is according to the ever unreliable Pokedex, Giratina was _allegedly_ banished for being "too violent" something that's never even actually been backed up by any Pokemon media: In Pokemon Platinum, Giratina was happy in isolation and even brought Cyrus to the place he was always meant to be. And then Giratina in the movies was perfectly happy living in isolation and just wanted Shaymin's powers after Dialga and Palkia's battle from the Darkrai movie caused smoke to appear in the distortion world, then in the Arceus movie it attacked them for causing the smoke to appear in the first place. Zygarde's three forms are _supposedly_ based on Loki's children, you forgot 100% which some people believe to be based on Hel (I don't really know why though) and 10% which people believe to be based on Fenrir so at least one person has taken that to mean Zygarde is Loki itself. Also that's a quote citation... Do you not know how quotes work?
@@MattwosRandomNonContent I didn't say that *is* what Giratina is or did, nor did I say that it *is* what I personally believe to be the case, I was simply explaining why people may believe that is the case and how it differs from what I was talking about with the Vivillon thing. Also even with what you say, there is still enough there and enough similarities and such that it is easy to see why people may fall into that opinion, even if it's not an opinion you personally hold. Also also, for Pokemon it doesn't exactly work to use game stuff to talk about movie stuff and whatever cause they are meant as different continuities to each other, so how things happen in one medium doesn't effect how things happen in the other mediums because of that. I didn't forget 100% or 10% Zygarde, I didn't mention them because I didn't feel it was relevant to what I was trying to say. I can see the Fenrir basis for 10%, though I just essentially say the main Gen 6 Legends are based on things from Norse Mythology, so people can take that as they will. I'm well aware how quotes work, however you didn't make it clear that you meant it in that way (a simple "I think the following quote summarizes my feelings on the matter" or something to that effect would have helped with that) rather than just posting it with no other context in a similar manner to how people often sign forum posts, which makes it come across as such. I can tell you're very opinionated and very passionate when speaking about your opinions, I would just warn you for the future it did come across as aggressive for no reason (I didn't call you names or insult you in any way and was just calmly explaining things), you might want to watch out for that in the future.
The Voltage badge always reminded me a little of those fancy mirrors or signs with the lightbulbs around the edges that they use in the theater. Still not sure how the triangle fits in, or what it has to do with Clemont, but that part does make sense to me.
While I agree the badges have become basic, at least with Alola and Paldea it makes sense why they don't have either gyms or proper badge things. With Alola the region wasn't part of the Official Pokemon League and had their own Pokemon traditions, kinda like Hawai'i did before the US fricked it up. I really liked it. Galar was a sports thing and it was frickin entertainment, we had a uniform we had to wear. The coin represented more of a League than individual badges. Paldea is a school thing. Things schools are notorious for are standardization and simplification. Calling badges by their simple names and having them look similar feels like exam reward pins some countries have had for students to compete for. Has Game Freak really lost the plot or is it that they're hinting at a much deeper lore in Pokeworld than you're giving credit for? Also, have you ever wondered why The Pokemon League and the 8 gym elite four championship format is so widespread over the world? Wiping out what could have been local sports with their way of play? What could have been before standardization is fascinating.
What some see as a shield on the Voltage Badge can easily represent a skylight or a window. Then again, if you strike a shield in certain ways you might cause sparks to fly. I'm actually a bit surprised you didn't think of that.
20:33 although I feel like it's worth mentioning that the passport you put the stamps in are likely based on Traveller's Passports (no not the legit government ID stuff) They're touristy little blue booklets that can be found in some select gift shops (I found some in the 'Iolani Palace shop) and they have little sites that highlight some visitor recommended locations throughout the islands that let you get a stamp wherever you go to (though most places didn't have a stamp to use or was even aware of what it even was so it's very niche) I got one for like $7 and I've filled out every location on O'ahu save for the Polynesian Cultural Center. From what I've found, there's about 3 types of these passports around the world: one for Hawai'i & Oceania, one for the US and Canada, and one for the Caribbean and Central & South America
Yeah, the badges were a major let down in Paldea. Barely worth noting. At least the Kalos badges look pretty cool. It's amazing you got this far. And thanks for reminding me I'm an adult now, still playing with my favorite childhood game! I was hoping for an existential crisis today! 😵💫😆
While the Paldea badges are a downgrade, I don't think they are a "major" letdown thanks to the pictures that come with them. The pictures you take with Gym Leaders, Arven and Team Star is always charming. They can be cool, cute or even funny. Honestly, I think they are the real "badges" of Sca/Vio.

I thought the Voltage Badge was like a segment on a wheel you would see on gameshows and such, like how the gym challenge is a quiz which is gameshow-ish
The lightning on the Voltage Badge could represent Lumiose City itself, with not only all the streets but all the region's routes converging in the middle like that.
I thought the shape behind clements badge was sort of reminiscent to a game show, which is what his younger sister hosts in the gym for challengers before they challenge clement. And the triangle with the arched side was maybe a reference to game shows, such as wheel of fortune, or any other game show that has a segmented spinning wheel.
Also for pronunciation of French verbs ending in -er : the r is silent, and -er is basically pronounced like the é in Pokémon, and in rêver the ê is pronounced like the a in may for example
Definitely agree here. I dunk on XY for a total lack of a cohesive story and for the desaturation of Pokémon colors, but the designs of the characters, buildings, new mons, and a lot of other things were phenomenal.

@madnessarcade7447 You make a long point. I like it, but… Idk, I want to bring up an “I need to win Worlds for GF to notice and hire me” schtick, but I am focus on some Pokémon cartridges I lost the other day. Also, *I* am unrealistic lol. That is why I haven’t given up. I’m not saying anyone else is/has. My unrealistic nightmare if I did would be like the TAWOG episode where the world lost it’s color if I lost hope. That’s really all I can say before bed.
@@madnessarcade7447 I understand your point. I do agree that the Pokemon themselves are the most important part of the franchise. But I don't want the Pokemon Company to rush their products to the point they are glitchy. A boring game is preferable compared to a glitchy one. As long as the base is stable, I can live with it.
Gen 9 was my wake up call that TPC and Gamefreak don't care about the games anymore. SV is still a buggy mess even a year later despite them saying they would fix it. SV is the last mainline pokemon games i buy (i may still buy side games and remakes).
5:11 it’s not that they are devoid of soul it’s that it fits the uniformity of the game since the region is centered around a school where you wear a school uniform and the Pokémon league is an exam So they are like school badges or boy/girl scout badges I think that’s a cool concept
But they could have given them more interesting names but just decided not too. And I think that’s telling of the issue modern Pokémon games have. They ask how little they can get away with not how much can they cram in.
I will always be salty that they waited so long to use the Dark type for a gym, and by then it didn't get to have a unique badge to it. Yes, there was a high chance of it being viewed as an edgey badge but it would've been neat. The fact it was once again not used for a gym in recent games main story also saddens me :C
I think the voltage badge might be mimicking the city layout. I remember there being multiple direct paths to the middle spaced out Edit: it's close but there aren't six clearly distinct paths.
I have got one queation about the battle royale videos: if for whatever reason vikavolt appears in a battle royale are you going to make it super fast or super slow? I am asking because its base speed is trash even though its pokedex entries say it is a fast pokemon.
It works, but they probably could have called it thr "Shutter Badge" to make it sound less lame, plus a TON of bugs vibrate or shiver to communicate. Or in other words, they "shudder" to talk to each other.
Something I notice about the badges. Kalos was meant as kind of a jumping off point. Like the restart of the series but everyone seemed to dislike it so much so they went Altra basic in the next game. I think the bages are the ultimate consequences of this defeat
So could you explain the type symbols for Normal and Psycic in gen 9. How did psychic go from being a 3rd eye to being a bland hexagon thing, and is Normal supposed to look like an alarm clock? Are Normal types really defined by rest and snore strategies?
You know what still has soul? The button layout of the GameCube Controller. And the NYXI Wizard is a very complete controller with really excellent build quality. Click this link to get yours: nyxigame.com/
Interesting variations for the word "soul" in that context:
Poetry, effort or creativity.
POKEMON EGG GROUPS EXPALINED!
You called Arven a pokegirl. Now I must hc him as transmasc >:)
I still suggest you go over the designs of the anime original badges.
4:55 Was the Fairy an Error during Editing, or did you somehow confuse Fairy with Psychic?
Is it bad to say that with scarlet and violet I didn’t realize we got physical badges. I thought the selfies were the badges.
IIRC Arven literally says he made his own badges for you
"so what proof do you have for beating all of the 8 gyms?"
Player: *sighs while opening their gallery
Same
Sameee, I taught the badges where just there to show the Gym's Type, Not the actual badge
Especially since you get them for the Titans and Team Star, Wich doesn't make sence on why they look just like Gym badges
The Star Badges are explicitly designed to rip off Gym Badges
For me the most upsetting thing about gyms was in gen 8, they designed a gym uniform for each of the gyms (plus some extra) and you weren't allowed to wear them in the actual gyms, because you were forced to wear the standard gym uniform...
That actually makes sense though. The whole game is designed like a socer match. You have to wear your own colours, can't wear the colours of the home team you are fighting against. But you can represent them when not playing against them.
@@steverempel8584 *football
Yeah, I spent so much time trying to figure out why the gym uniform wasn't working right.
You tricked us into another badge episode, but I do agree the badges have seriously become basic
No that was gen 5

I always liked the Snowbell City badge because it looks like it is filled with blue water and you can slosh the water around inside.
yes!! i want to shake it so badly
I thought it was filled with snow
Nice try but you’re just giving gamefreak and the localisation team a pass for being lazy
Also, someone mentioned that as you go through Kalos, the seasons change the farther in
Vaniville starts in Spring, and by Cyllage and Shalour, youre in Summer, as theyre coastal. Then, when you get to Laverre City and its surrounding routes, its Fall/Autumn. And as you approach Anistar and Snowbelle, its winter.
That's definitely an interesting way to incorporate passage of time with seasons change without actually incorporating constantly changing seasons
@@RevaloNodriana I mean, it was kinda like that in BW/B2W2, it just changed basically every month
It’s also a city that apparently is prone to blackouts
the sheild thing also looks kinda like a V, as in Voltage
I think one really neat thing about the kalos badge (im personally playing Y right now and im about to fight the Snowbelle Gym) is that every one of the badges has a kind of gemstone incorporated in them (that clear bit), symbolizing the emphasis on beauty in Jalos (gemstones, jewels)
Makes sense given this gen invented mega stones
what gems do rumble, voltage, plant and cliff contain?
@@beckhampang191 I’ve always considered the amber blocks, garnet/topaz fist, aquamarine leaf, and citrine triangle to be the gems because in the xy games you can rotate the badges 360 degrees and those parts look like gemstones
I think most of the creativity in regards to the badges in Gen 9 was put towards making unique pictures rather than making unique badges, so it's moreso a case of whether or not the player appreciates the fun character interaction more or less than they do the inspiration for the badge design.
yeah i noticed and enjoyed the selfies more than i ever paid attention to the badge names or designs
I don't. I want my cool badges
And for the Psychic badge section... well, let's just say that mispronunciation of anise was probably the worst of the video, and it's actually an English word lol
i came here to comment about "la verre" too 🤣
Xdd
Cool to know just a bit more about Witchcrafter Madame Verre having read this.
The Magistus have directly dealt with glass.
Maybe glass has an alchemic significance in some ways.
Yes alchemy use a lot of glass exactly like chemistry, because all of the tools are made of glass. Test tube, erlenmeyer....
The way he said Anis as Anus 💀
* Viola’s badge was a bit hard to think of a new name but given it resembles a beetle, perhaps the Elytra badge could go well, seeing as the elytra is the hardened forewing of beetles
* Maybe they could’ve called the Fairy Badge, the Fae badge instead given that Fae’s another word for fairy.
I was thinking the Fairy Badge could be changed to the Sprite Badge, since sprites are a kind of fairy, but I guess people might think of the soda...
Or Pixie. Or Sprite. Literally any synonym for fairy would have worked here.
for the psychic one i was thinking the Pythos badge because thats the name of the snake that occupied the oracle of delphi in greek mythology and the smoke trail kind of can be seen as a snake
Oracle might also have worked for the Psychic badge.
I think the fairy badge is ok in this scenerio, as Valerie's gym was the FIRST EVER fairy type gym
The triangle part also seems to have bolts/screws along the edges to maybe indicate his mechanic work??
Also reminiscent of the fact that Paris is a circular city with the Eiffel tower being the brightest tower in the city at the center and reaching out with light.
You notice it looks like an explosion?? Because his inventions would explode and/or malfunction all the time
In Japanese they straight up named the guy Citron, because of his hair color and... Lemon batteries I guess?
Endless excuses for lazy game design huh?
@@RyushoYosei especially since they canonically rotate gyms out in the region. If a new leader becomes strong enough, they can replace a different one like how there was a fight for a fighting/psychic gym.
It also makes sense as the gym challenge is not very popular in Paldea as it is in other regions, meaning that, canonically, they probably didn't have the budget to make each badge unique.
@@mysticdigital5936Pokemon fans when people don't think the newer games are the spawn of Satan...
I'm surprised you went with stained glass speech for the Fairy Badge but didn't mentioned how Laverre could also pull from "verre", the french for "glass" (even more fitting of the badge)
Calling Arven a "Pokegirl" despite him being a male character is so funny, because he IS a Pokegirl, somehow.
@@madnessarcade7447holy hell, now that's a schizo rant if I've ever seen one.
aren't the pokemon designs made by Creatures Inc? So GameFreak has literally done nothing good in nearly a decade
Now I’m curious, what if you did a video on each Alola trial? Like, why you have to do X thing to get Y pokemon to come out and fight you. Maybe there’s some sort of traditional Hawaiian activity weaved into at least one or two of these little challenges?
Fun fact: we've had *three different badges* called the "Fairy Badge" since gen 6. Let that sink in.
Tbh it might have been a really good idea to make the SV badge’s designs after the main pokemon
Ex: Fire Badge would be based off fire revavroom (or torkoal?), Rock would be based off Klawf, Bug would be based off teddiursa
Voltage badge could be based on the idea that applying friction to amber with cloth will exhibit static electricity. Just my thought though.
15:35 there is a missed opportunity. They should call this Badge the "Astral Badge". This would be a unique name and would perfectly fit to Olympia.
i haven`t play Gen 9, but the badges look like these boy scout badges you sew onto your sash to display. Which was propably the idea with the school theming.....
I binge this channel for a day, forget about it for 3 months, and repeat. The quality and/or humor gets better every time.
The Paldea Genericness makes kinda sense, because the Champion Institution is kind of a MegaCorp which are famously soulless
Also also fun fact
Lavender is known to be good to relax people and make them sleep easier. So… it conects with the Dream part
My friends and I have always called the bug badge the "Bottle opener badge"
The Blubeberry Academy Elite 4 should have their own badges because they're more like gym leaders lol.
5:11 it’s not that they are devoid of soul it’s that it fits the uniformity of the game since the region is centered around a school where you wear a school uniform and the Pokémon league is an exam
So they are like school badges or boy/girl scout badges I think that’s a cool concept
They all have their own charm
To be fair it isn't hard to beat the last 3 games for friends from X and Y to Sword and Shield they are nothing to write home about
I mean, honestly?
Like Kabu's symbol is a Centiskorch helmet with the fire Kanji, and Pierce's is a monstrous jaw, which when turned on its side is the Team Yell logo
Interesting stuff
I greatly appreciate this perspective on badges, and it makes me rethink how I want to do my badges for the Fakemon region I'm creating. Thanks Lockstin for the valuable input!
Hey, even if the badges are boring as sin, you can still talk about the Gym Leaders and Gym towns of Galar and Paldea.
Whenever someone says "It was always that way, You just didn't notice because X",
That's ALWAYS a coping mechanism.
It's true that getting older makes people able to recontextualize the past, but that's only 1/3rd of the equation.
The only consistently goos thing about pokemon is
1. The music
2. The pokemon designs
3. And the human designs
Everything else has fallen so flat lately, i couldn't even be bothered to play the violet dlc, or play it anymore past the meh story
Clemont's badge is probably a retro voltage gauge (or measuring device in general). The rivets on the edge make it look like the lens/cover is bolted into a machine.
Paldea's badges are the race cup icons in Mariokart 8.

19:06 in the anime the locket contains his Key Stone to mega evolve his Abomasnow.
The hexagon sgaie could also dereference that when water freezes, the molecules expand and form a hexagonal shape
To better explain the Lumiose city badge (since pokemon y was my second pokemon game): Lockstein pretend the badge is 3D!(3d was big in pokemon games at the time) Yeah that "lens flare" design is actually Lumiose city tower if a bird was looking down on it.
(because thunderbolts/ thunderstorms come form the sky)
"But why is the badge's base a triangle Kat?"
I got 2 reasons for that:
1. Its taking after the triangular caution sign warning planes not to crash into the tower(because pilots can get blinded by light. Ever heard of the Hindenburg blimp crash? 0.o )
(Yveltal is absolutely pokemon Hræsvelgr though, even if all the Helheim Bird is actually known for is being where wind comes from)
"I love humans. Always seeing patterns in things that aren't there." - Eighth Doctor
One thing you can say about the Paldea badges is that they are actual badges now, before they were more like pins... its not much but its something!
Not the typo for Paldea badges! Psychic badge picture, fairy text haha love it
The Voltage badge always reminded me a little of those fancy mirrors or signs with the lightbulbs around the edges that they use in the theater. Still not sure how the triangle fits in, or what it has to do with Clemont, but that part does make sense to me.
I kinda feel Clemont’s electric badge is meant to be reminiscent of his Heliolisk with its frill up? Iono. Thanks for another great badge video! ❤
I thought the Paldean badges looked like Merit Badges from scouts, uniform in size and shape but with a symbol showing what they're about.
Think about the badges of Paldea as coins you’d find in a Treasure Chest meaning it’s “Treasure”
What some see as a shield on the Voltage Badge can easily represent a skylight or a window. Then again, if you strike a shield in certain ways you might cause sparks to fly. I'm actually a bit surprised you didn't think of that.
22:37
Arven best Pokègirl for real lmao
I love the victory photos in Paldea, I wish I could look at them whenever I wanted.
world's smallest violin playing over the bug badge
🤔... perhaps the Voltage Badge's design is based on a solar cell, collecting energy to convert into light. Just a thought.

I thought the Voltage Badge was like a segment on a wheel you would see on gameshows and such, like how the gym challenge is a quiz which is gameshow-ish
Man, been a long ass time since I've watched a video from you.
Finished watching it, good video.

Definitely agree here. I dunk on XY for a total lack of a cohesive story and for the desaturation of Pokémon colors, but the designs of the characters, buildings, new mons, and a lot of other things were phenomenal.
I love how the Galarian badges form a circle together. Like a medal for you to have to show that you qualify for the championship

I always assumed the Luminose badge was the big tower giving off electricity to the city, but flipped upside-down hence why the triangle is inverted.
I like to think the Voltage badge is similar to Heliolisk just like Clemont's Solar Charger is based on Heliolisk
I will always be salty that they waited so long to use the Dark type for a gym, and by then it didn't get to have a unique badge to it. Yes, there was a high chance of it being viewed as an edgey badge but it would've been neat. The fact it was once again not used for a gym in recent games main story also saddens me :C
Weirdly cool dorks is a good way to describe the Team Star leaders
EVERYONE: *Hyped for Indigo Disk*
LOCKSTIN: Pokémon has lost its soul...
EVERYONE: 😞
LOCKSTIN: ...when it comes to badge design.
I think the voltage badge might be mimicking the city layout. I remember there being multiple direct paths to the middle spaced out
Edit: it's close but there aren't six clearly distinct paths.
I have got one queation about the battle royale videos:
if for whatever reason vikavolt appears in a battle royale are you going to make it super fast or super slow?
I am asking because its base speed is trash even though its pokedex entries say it is a fast pokemon.
FUN FACT: Viola is a photographer. A nickname for photographers is “shutterbug”, which also works for Viola’s type.
It works, but they probably could have called it thr "Shutter Badge" to make it sound less lame, plus a TON of bugs vibrate or shiver to communicate.
Or in other words, they "shudder" to talk to each other.
22:34 Can't tell if he was joking or if he literally mistook Arven for a girl.
I think you mean that the last “BASTIODON” of soul in pokemon disappeared?
Something I notice about the badges. Kalos was meant as kind of a jumping off point. Like the restart of the series but everyone seemed to dislike it so much so they went Altra basic in the next game. I think the bages are the ultimate consequences of this defeat
So could you explain the type symbols for Normal and Psycic in gen 9. How did psychic go from being a 3rd eye to being a bland hexagon thing, and is Normal supposed to look like an alarm clock? Are Normal types really defined by rest and snore strategies?
i think normal is supposed to be an animal head, bc they're mostly normal animals
