You really have taught me a lot and I thank you. I have had this camera for a while and did not really know how to use it. Along with you tutorial video series I feel I have come a long way in one short week. Love your work appreciate the insight / knowledge you have shared. Thanks again
@@MWESTPhotography Hi, im interested in this camera, i read has 12 megapixel is that enough? for good pictures and videos quality? also at night, i have samsung digital camera ES95 has 16 megapixel (and canon is 12 i miss something), want to buy another one, for good quality pictures, i dont know about cameras, so im checking reviews for info
I bought this camera when it first came out and loved it. Since then have progressed to newer mirrorless full frame cameras. However I need to bring a small light-weight camera with a long zoom to watch some sport whilst travelling light, and have decided to bring this little gem back out. It also tests my skills re-learning all the functions and your video has been a great help. Have found many that I didn’t know from before! Thank you..a decade on!
I bought a Canon SX20 IS when it came out. I love it. It doesn't have the 50x zoom as this one does, but the main reason I bought the SX20 is that it takes AA batteries. The rechargeable proprietary batteries that most of these cameras use are expensive to replace when they lose their capacity. Rechargeable Eneloop AA's can be used almost forever & you can get regular AA's anywhere.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. The SX50 has good low light capabilities and the HD video quality is good. If you shoot video inside make sure you turn the lights on or just use an external LED light. You can buy LED lights that fit on top of your camera. I have a bunch of them and they work very well.
Good presentation. He forgot to mention that the long lens capacity is impossible to duplicate for 99% of us for a DSLR interchangeable lens camera, whereas all glass lenses of 500mm to 1000 or 1200mm can literally start at thousands and go to ten thousands of US Dollars. So, for birding, sail races, long distance sports fields, etc. this camera amazes, and offers a decent burst rate as well. It also offers good ultraclose macro features. Perhaps a review of the scenic modes would open up to the average viewer what the camera is capable of doing. It likely is good to a 16 X 24 or so print, whereas a DSLR with 4 more MP or twice as many MP can go to poster and bigger sizes.
Its a pleasure! I have been getting more and more feedback from people who want more tutorials for this camera. I am defnitely looking into shooting alot more videos. I just have to finish some current projects first.
I did not take any portrait images when I had the SX50. Way back when I first bought a S3is I was very impressed with the quality of my portraits so I'm sure the SX50 will be a huge improvement. I am planning more videos on bridge cameras in the next month or so. Busy finishing a large project. Then I will look at portraits, macro etc etc.
Hi i just got a a 50 refurbished from cannon.. works great but the problem i have is when i use the TV setting all i get is a white blur.. what do i need to adjust this? my old one worked great. but had to replace it... and never had the white blur with the first one. any help thanks Alma
Hi, I would like to know how good is the night shooting on this camera, also if you have a link where I can see low light pictures without flash. I'm a pianist and I'm interest in how is the sound quality, if you have other video examples would be great. Thanks!
Carolina De La Ossa Carolina, the night shooting is not bad.. your problem is the sound. The camera only has a built in mic. If you want proper sound you are going to invest more in your audio than on this camera. You can look at external audio recorders which you can place near the piano, When you then edit your video in post you will need to sync the audio of the camera and the external mics. Thats how I shoot all my videos with external sound.
Great video! I got this camera for my sixteenth birthday and I had no clue what the buttons meant, this video really helped thankyou. I've subscribed and looking forward to more videos.
Cool, It's a pleasure. I don't have the camera with me anymore. It's back at the camera store. If I recall you can take an image while recording video and the battery life was ok. Have you checked on DP Review for their results?
I have this camera. But when I use the built in flash, especially at night, my pics come out dark. Should I get an external flash? I don't see one on the canon site for it.
Request you share a review for Nikon P520 42x camera also. I am really confused on which one to buy between the canon SX50HS and Nikon P520 42x zoom. Please help.
where i do connect the mic ,, i got this mini mic and i cant find the right cable to plug in ,, what kind of adapter plug i can use for me can record with mic?
Its a pleasure. Glad I could help. You can also look at the Fujifilm HS50EXR, it does have a smaller zoom (42x). It does have a more SLR like feel. There is also the Sony Cybershot DSC-HX300 which also has 50x optical. We don't work in $'s in South Africa so I don't know the price on your side:)
Thanks for the excellent presentation. I am going to start attending a photography class and needed to buy a digital camera. I believe I have now found it, thanks!
Enjoying SX50 HS. My computer does not allow me to download editing features for my photos. What website can I go to to download software to touch up my photos. Also, if I want to do macro; what settings would you recommend?
Hi Gail. Watch my series called Digital Photography Today on my channel. I show you how the macro function on your camera works. You can look at Adobe Photoshop Elements as a paid option and GIMP as a free option to editing your pictures.
I have a problem filming with my powershot sx50, when i film video, theres a hissing or a sound with it, i turned off the fan and all but still can hear it, is there any setting to remove that noise?
MsDanielleSoFab Danielle, which fan did you turn off? To get the best result with your audio you need to use an external audio recorder. You will notice I have a mic on my lapel.
MsDanielleSoFab I dont understand what you mean with a fan. For the best sound you do need an external mic. I use a recorder with a lapel mic, then I sync the audio in post on Adobe Premiere. It is a process but very rewarding when your sound is great.
MsDanielleSoFab The SX50HS cannot fit an external mic, it does not have an input for it. You can look at an external recorder. Then connect a Lapel mic to it. I use the Tascam DR-05 recorder which works great.
Do u recommend this for a start youtube videos ? Will the quality of the emd result be good for both vids n pics? If not, what is the best yet affordable for youtube starters together with capturing pics? Thanks
From my personal knowledge I can tell you it's great for starters and I would really recommend it, but you got to have to right settings. I'm pretty sure the best setting is program.
hi I have this camera but just recently the picture viewer quit working...put when you check photos it works any suggestions I love my camera amazing pictures
Its a pleasure! This is not a easy question. The SX50hs is a very nice camera and will give you stunning images. With the 650D you will soon find that you are spending alot for all the extra gadgets. Even if you think you will not use flash you will soon find that you need it and then you infest more into your system. The 650D will focus alot faster so if you take pictures of kids your success rate will be better. You can also buy a 50mm f1.8 lens which is a great lens for low light creative pix
I'm loving viewing your videos, Great Information. I was wondering if you had any idea why they put a hot shoe on the camera? Canon shows no accessories that use it, and I can't find any aftermarket stuff that says its compatible with it. I'm looking for an external mike to use for videos
+Going NoWhereFast Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video. The Hotshoe is for using a canon speedlite or a wireless trigger for off camera flash. The SX50 does not support external mic, only the SX60 has an external mic port. You can use an external mic and record the audio on a external recorder. You will need to sync the audio in post but it will sound a lot better. That is the way I shoot video with my Nikon SLR cameras. I never record with the external mic directly on the camera.
If you can afford an SLR camera I would rather recommend that. Much better low light. The SX50 has got great video capabilities but if you are serious about your video footage look at an SLR camera.
***** I know, mate. But that's exactly the problem: "If you can afford". I can't. I'm just searching for a cheap solution. Thanks for answering though.
***** The SX50 is not bad and can be your starting point. You will then have to do your best with your lighting. I know it sucks that everything cost an arm and a leg but in the end you will get there! All the best.
Director? Use a video camera camcorder then you don't get "rolling shutter effect". MWESTPhotography mentions this problem on the comments above. This makes any video look very amateurish.
I have the camera and love the pictures and quality of the Macro and zoom. There is one thing I wonder though, do I need to buy any additional lenses or filters? I have not purchased any accessories so far and don't really feel the need to do so, but was curious if there is something out there that will increase even more the camera's performance. Any suggestions or comments will be apprecated. And again, great, helpful video! Thank you!
ay Have you watch my series called Digital Photography Today on my channel? There I talk about the different filters you can use on the SX50 and how to attach them.
I just picked up a used one of these off craigslist and this may be the dumbest question in the world, but how the heck do you set it to take videos instead of pictures?
Very very helpful video! Thx a lottt. I like this camera very much, but wifi is missed. Could u suggest suggest some easy method for transfering file to smartphone or pc?
Kenny Koy Cool, its a pleasure. I recorded a video on that. You can use a eyefi card. Episode 23 - Shooting Wi-Fi with Eye-Fi [Digital Photography Today]
Thanks for your review. I'm so much hesitated between SX50 and an SLR like 650D! I need it to take photo from babies at normal light at home. With no extra light, and nature & jungles too. The weight and size is important as I need something handy. So do you think SX50 can meet my needs? Or I should go for heavy big 650D?!
I bought Coolpix P520 without doing any research on cameras. So far, I heard not very good things about it. I like to travel, so I need a camera that takes good quality photos especially from far distance and of course in night time. Should I return and get another camera?
No the lens is fixed, you cannot change it. I have not used the sx50 on a safari, I usually take the SLR with a larger lens but I'm planning to take the sx50 to a game drive this weekend. Looking forward to see what I can get.
Hi, I am an amateur photographer.. I really like the way you have explain the details about Cannon SX 50 hs. I liked one camera which is Fujifilm HS50 EXR, but after watching you presentation I am really confused which one to buy.. Should I go for Fujifilm HS50 EXR or Canon SX50 hs.. Please reply me ASAP as I am leaving for Singapore on Friday and I have to buy a camera before that.. It would be a great help.. Cheers MWES Photography.. :)
need help....its very hard to adjust the manual settings...if i want to change the aperture and the shutter speed...is there any short cut button in doing it.....thanks
hello sir ! nice & very informative video. I want to ask you a question. is canon have any plans to launch the advanced version of this bridge camera in near future ? especially in india ! if not then I am certainly going to buy this camera & I will learn photography with the help of your videos. pls reply .
Hi, in this video, for 1920 resolution, it takes 42 minutes. So if I buy 2 spare cards and batteries, can I film? And does the camera record total filming time? So that I remember shots in vdo to remember what I jot down in filming. I know its a photography camera but I want to experiment with video and flash so that later I can have better ideas. Thanks
question I just bought a canon sx50hs camera and it takes so very good pictures I was wondering do you know of any good wirless mics for it $600 to $800 is my range but I don't think it's a dslr camera so I don't know what to buy
Yes, keep in mind it picks up ambient sounds. So don't expect great sound if you are in a noisy area. Then rather use a external recorder for the audio.
Hi, thanks for posting such a thorough review. I'm trying to decide between this Canon, the Fujifilm FinePix HS50EXR and the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FZ70. I've been using a Nikon CoolPix P500 and am frustrated with its inability to handle low light and the slow focus. But I'm an amateur, so I need a lot of help from my camera to get the shots I want. Any recommendation between these three? Thanks.
I just revieved my canon sx50hs today from amazon. do you know anywhere that I could find out how to use the more advanced functions of the camera? ps I love this camera!
Any chance that you happen to have used Canon PowerShot SX510 HS .I am considering to buy it, But i want to clarify certain things. I shoot my videos mostly at night using a 40 watt CFL. Most of the camera's i tried produced noisy and grainy videos. These were all budget point and shoot camera's with ccd sensors. Before buying a Canon PowerShot SX510 HS, i want to make sure that it has manual controls for video's and it doesnot produce noise in video's
I have not used the 510 yet so I cant comment on it. Try adding more lights. The 510 will not have manual controls for video. The SX50 doesnt even have manual for video. That is why I shoot video with my SLR camera because I can control the camera in manual when shooting video, its very important to keep things consistent.
I am looking into the Canon Powershot SX50 HS for not only photography but for taking videos. I want a good little video camera to take videos of my mom training horses so I can make DVDs for her. So... I was wondering if there is a mic input on this camera? And if there is not how is the audio?
I am using auto and zoom to capture birds and feed on table, but camera will not focus on windy days. What do I need to do to rectify this please.? Has to be on auto as date and time stamp needed and this is only place that will work. Please reply ASAP. Grateful thanks,
Hi, thank you for this straight and in depth review of SX50. I was struggling to choose between SX 50 and Sony Cyber Shot HX300. Both of them are neck to neck in all the features and options. Before I make my desicion I would like to know whether we can take still images while we are recording a video. And what is the battery life. Thnak you.
Hello, I have a camera but also want this because of the features (zoom Ect.) just wondering where I can get one in the UK? I see eBay sell them but could they be fake on there. Thanks for the good review :)
MWESTPhotography - I have 1 cuestion for you. So, I am 22 year old and I love to take photo. And I want to buy one camera but i fon't know which camera is best to buy. - I was thinking for " Canon PowerShot SX500 IS " and " Canon poserShot Sx500hs " .. But i wan't to ask you if to buy this or other camera. ? Thankyou. U are the best.
thank you for this review. I am a beginner and I am looking for a camera with good picture quality but also one I can make good quality youtube videos with but I need it to be easy enough for me to be able to learn to work since I am a beginner. I know this camera is more expensive than the Nikon Coolpix l820 and has some notable differences. I was looking at the sx50hs b/c of the flip out screen and I know that will make it easier to shoot a youtube video but I heard I could plug the Nikon L820 up to my computer when filming and I could see what I am doing that way. I don't know if I want to spend the extra money for the sx50hs and I worry about it being too complicated for me. Should I spend the extra money on this camera or stick with the Nikon L820. The only bad reviews I saw on the l820 (and a few on the sx50hs) was that some people had trouble with focusing if there was any movement. Do you think that is a problem with either of these cameras? I would love any thoughts you have on this. Also I am looking at a refurb L820. Do you know anything about Nikons policy as far as warranties for a refurb? Any suggestions on the best place to buy either of these would be awesome. Sorry so many questions but money is tight so I have to make the best possible decision! Thanks.
I have not used the L820 yet so I can't give you any feedback on it. Your bridge or point and shoot cameras take longer to focus than your larger SLR cameras.
Great video. I just bought this camera. I wish you had demonstrated the macro function. Overall, great job.....I hope the macro is as good as the zoom.
Would you please tell me how to do a photo with a plate of food with this camera so that the background is blurred like as in the magazines.Thank you :)
I am trying to descide on which camera to get . I am trying the canon powershot sx50HS right now to see if i like it. The question is should i get it or get a SR camera. and which one would you get.
Do you have access to an SLR camera to try that out as well? Its a very tricky question with a big discussion. It will depend on the quality of the final product that you want to achieve. You will also have to invest more when you decide on the SLR route.
***** I don't have access to a SR. I tried a nikon 600 and it seems to take sharper pictures with out any work having to be done to them . It seems with the canon i have to go in and change the lighting on them I want to get a new camera but don't want to turn around in a year and not be satisfied with the quality of my pictures. you are so good at explaining things about a camera. which i need not know. I really appreciate all the videos
Sylvia Morris It is easier to achieve good results on an SLR once you have a solid understanding of the basics, otherwise you will find you can make a lot of mistakes with an SLR camera.
I just got one of these second hand and its the best camera I have owned
I do wildlife photography and it is superb for birds and distance work !

It does not support Bluetooth, NFC, or WiFi. If you're trying to transfer photos, you'll have to connect your cameras SD card to a PC/laptop

Not sure yet. If I get my hands on one I will review it.
Can I use external mics? And possibly the cannon camera app? Or should I spend the extra 200 on the sx 60
Xeriox01 You need the SX60 for the external mic support and the canon camera app via wifi.
I have this camera. But when I use the built in flash, especially at night, my pics come out dark. Should I get an external flash? I don't see one on the canon site for it.

David Emmanuel Its a pleasure!
Thanks to your video i purchased this camera and iam a newbie for photography and ive learn a lot from your videos.😃
Junalyn Bognot Its a pleasure. Glad I could help.:)
Would you take it on a safari? Can you change the lens?

Does it has a Slow motion mode when Recording Movies
ontray haley Yes.

hello sir ! nice & very informative video. I want to ask you a question. is canon have any plans to launch the advanced version of this bridge camera in near future ? especially in india ! if not then I am certainly going to buy this camera & I will learn photography with the help of your videos. pls reply .
As far as I know there is a new powershot on the horizon. Just don't know when it will come out. Thanks for watching my videos.
Thanks
dllre You cannot shoot the total time. The camera stops after a while depending on the quality setting.
What would you choose? The Canon SX50 HS or the Sony DSC-HX300? Thank you.
i just bought one today and your review was awesome
Antoine Blackwell Thanks! :)
Can I use a T2 addaptor for this camera? I want to addapt it on my telescope but I've noticed I can't remove the lens.
question I just bought a canon sx50hs camera and it takes so very good pictures I was wondering do you know of any good wirless mics for it $600 to $800 is my range but I don't think it's a dslr camera so I don't know what to buy
+Naked Creations The SX50 can not use an external mic. You will need a audio recorder.
are you going to review the canon sx510 hs?
Yes, keep in mind it picks up ambient sounds. So don't expect great sound if you are in a noisy area. Then rather use a external recorder for the audio.
Can you use autofocus while in video? I am thinking of buying and using this on beauty videos and autofocus is always a plus
Thanks.
Its a pleasure. I have only spent time on the SX50 so I cant comment on the other cameras. You can try dpreview to compare the different cameras.
Nice review, but what about battery life? is it needed to be carrying a spare one?
greetings,
Pop-up flash has stopped working. Tried all settings, just doesn't work. Any ideas?
I was given one of these last week and this video was excellent to help me get started.
I just revieved my canon sx50hs today from amazon. do you know anywhere that I could find out how to use the more advanced functions of the camera?
ps I love this camera!
Can I add a microphone to the camera?
Thanks for the suggestion. I will look for increasing lighting.

Its a pleasure. Your lighting will make a HUGE difference. All the best!
Thanks for this amazing review. I just want to ask u that should i go for this camera or sony hx300?? which one wud b better?? kindly help..
Its a pleasure. I have not used the Sony HX300 camera yet so I really dont know.
It will depend on your photographic needs, that will influence your choice between a bridge camera (SX50) and SLR camera (D5100).
Can I ask ? How do you transfer your pictures?? Canon sx50 HS to cellphone or computer??
Have you also looked at Sony Cybershot DSCHX300 ? It is around 40$ more and very similar (50x, etc). It has focus/zoom dial on the lens which is nice.
I bought this camera based mainly on this review....excellent review mate...THANK YOU!
Its a HUGE pleasure! :)
is there a way it can stop taking two pictures under AV and TV.
Grateful thanks,
Thank you. Very helpful. Best review I've seen on this camera. Thanx again.
You did a really great job on this video! I really think this might be the camera for me!
Excuse me, can you attach a microphone to this camera? If not can you tell me a way to attack one? So does it have a 3.5 mm hole?
I m already having this camera
I want to know that is this camera dslr or slr??????
Hi, thank you for this straight and in depth review of SX50. I was struggling to choose between SX 50 and Sony Cyber Shot HX300. Both of them are neck to neck in all the features and options. Before I make my desicion I would like to know whether we can take still images while we are recording a video. And what is the battery life. Thnak you.
Hello, I have a camera but also want this because of the features (zoom Ect.) just wondering where I can get one in the UK? I see eBay sell them but could they be fake on there. Thanks for the good review :)
can't find multiple shooting mode on this camera, can you help???
MWESTPhotography - I have 1 cuestion for you. So, I am 22 year old and I love to take photo. And I want to buy one camera but i fon't know which camera is best to buy. - I was thinking for " Canon PowerShot SX500 IS " and " Canon poserShot Sx500hs " .. But i wan't to ask you if to buy this or other camera. ? Thankyou. U are the best.
Can you tell how to focus i have power shot sx50 hs
thank you for this review.
***** ok thank you for your response
Great video. I just bought this camera. I wish you had demonstrated the macro function. Overall, great job.....I hope the macro is as good as the zoom.
I'm debating on buying this one or the Sony HX 200v? Which is better?
Well this helped me out a lot on my choice for a camera! Definitely getting this camera! Thanks for the information!
Watts-Up Vlogs Its a pleasure!
should i get the fujifilm s4500 or canon powershot 5X50hs??
Can we attach external mic to this device?
nikon p600 vs canon sx50 hs which one is the best buy. please suggest asap.
is it possible to change the lences in canon powershort sx50hs ????????????
pritam gurung of course not. It’s a built in bridge camera.
Would you please tell me how to do a photo with a plate of food with this camera so that the background is blurred like as in the magazines.Thank you :)
Hi, i was thinking about either this or fz200. Which should i go for?
Please tell me which i camera i should select between canon sx 500is & canon sx 50hs.
I am very bigginer in photography.
It seems with the canon i have to go in and change the lighting on them
I want to get a new camera but don't want to turn around in a year and not be satisfied with the quality of my pictures. you are so good at explaining things about a camera. which i need not know. I really appreciate all the videos
Sylvia Morris It is easier to achieve good results on an SLR once you have a solid understanding of the basics, otherwise you will find you can make a lot of mistakes with an SLR camera.
Nice Detailed Review...Is it a good idea to get a spare battery, as I imagine shooting in VIDEO mode consumes a lot of battery.
Hi Andrew,
yes, I also got a spare battery:)
