My wife has an earlier version of the FZ200 and is happy with the reach and image stabilization. She is very excited about the constant f/2.8 and slightly better ISO on the new version.
I am a reporter/photographer for a twice weekly community newspaper and this camera is perfect for my needs. I grew tired of hauling my 60D and 15-85 lens and this solved the issue...I purchased one of those leather camera cases that fit ergonomically and has a long strap and now taking pix is a breeze.
I saw this camera a couple of months ago and I got really surprised with the zoom lens! Amazing little thing! But the aperture goes all the way up to f/6.5 or something... But still, it's way better than a point and shoot!
Awesome review! I was debating to get the the Canon 600D but i'm not actually wanting to go into photography to for blogs and pictures, chose this one to get this week. Can't wait :D
I got mine for $379 around Christmas, and occasionally I've seen it for $349 on sale, but that's kind of rare. Just have to check all the stores, Amazon, etc., or wait till Spring. It is great, by the way!
This is a great bridge camera. Where you can clearly see the craters on the moon also great micro details highly recommended has some real good features must have camera for the person looking to step up from point and shoot. The power of the zoom and picture quality for the price is outstanding.
Thank you very much for your review brother. It was really knowledgeable..But I am confused as between the CANON SX50 / SONY HX 300 / and FujiFilm SL1000. All have the 50X zoom, but could you please guide me as which would be the best choice? I am from India and would really appreciate your suggestion.
sx50 was my first camera i fluked out really as i did not know anything about photography or anything regards cameras and i have to admit now i know more that this camera made my photos a lot better than my skill level should of , isold this before id really learned what i know now if i could go back id of kept this .
The FZ70 is really quiet new and the respectable reviewers are yet to come. I've seen some videos and they are impressive. Hope you could post some still fotos soon because I'm veering towards the sx50. Cheers:0
Was expecting less image quality from this P n S, but after seeing the images from FLICKR I'm completely impressed !! Incredible details up to 1200mm!!! Downside, though, is the burst function and the slow lens at full zoom, but not a dealbreaker for me.Bought!!! Good speaking voice btw.
Hello, I shoot hair videos and would like to know is do you think that this camera is high quality enough or detailed enough to shoot hair tutorials and be able to see the definition of my hair. Also Im really new at this and have been trying to shoot with this camera in doors but the video keeps coming out dark so you cant see the tutorial, any advice?
Ha! I _yearned_ for a CanonPowershotSX50HS. Then I got some good luck and I bought the Canon Powershot SX60HS. Love it. Although I _have_ heard that some people prefer the SX50HS.
@titoes5 Pls note that zoom on Canon SX50 is still much more powerful than FZ200 - 50x vs 24x - (600mm vs 1200mm) which makes a BIG difference if you shoot wildlife or any other stuff where long zoom is needed. So just for this feature the SX50 is quite unique in its category. Concerning image quality, if you Google a bit you will also find great shots from the SX50. Personally if I went to choose the FZ200 rather than the SX50, it would eventually be for its external microphone plug...Cheers!
Raw is an unmodified image format. Instead of the camera processing the image, you process it on your computer. Usually RAW files also have a larger bit depth as opposed to an 8 bit jpeg.
While realistically I won't be replacing my zooms with this, my dad has been looking for a new camera and this sounds absolutely perfect! (And I get to play around with it too)
Hi Matt. I have owned one myself for a while, and the big drawback in my opinion is the narrow aperture. And thats not the only thing. You cant stop the aperture down. Well you can, but only like a 1/4 step, so when using this camera, just be aware that you cant control DOF. At all. All you have to play with is shutter speed and iso. The aperture is out of the equation.
Hope you can answer this for me. I know it's been 2 yrs. since your video. Here goes. When I zoom in, i don't get that "really huge zoom", that i see so many say they get with their sx50. Am I doing something wrong? Are you using digital zoom, or just optical??? Thanks for your help.
ROGER VANDIVER Not sure how to answer that. I just use optical, as digital zoom degrades the image. If you're not get the full zoom range from your camera, then perhaps there is a problem with it?
Fujifilm FinePix HS50 can gave sx50 a run for the money, slight bigger sensor in 1/2" mic input, and f 2.8 in wide 24mm. Not as far but still very long zoom in 42mm. The main issue is weight 800oz
The constant f2.8 is nice, however a long zoom like the SX50 would almost always be used outdoors where light usually isn't as much of an issue. Plus, the SX50 is quite good at higher ISO settings so again, the slower aperture isn't so much of a problem. That's my take anyways. :-)
I am looking for a camera that I can take good pictutes of my aquariums with it, more specifically the fish (cichlids) that are in the aquarium. Would this camera be decent for that? I don't want to buy a DSLR as it is just for fun, would the appeture/shutter speed be OK for this, especially if I added an external flash or something? Or is this camera not good for this? Any advice is appreciated.
Simon M Philip Gonzales It being just for fun doesn't rule out DSLRs, those can be for fun too you know. Some good entry level DSLRs right now are the Pentax K-50, Canon 100D/SL1, Canon T3i, and I'm sure Nikon has a good offering as well, but I don't follow Nikon much. The SX50 should be fine for this use case though. The only concern I would have is how well manual focusing works on the SX50. The reason is because auto focus may often pick up on the glass tank and contrast within the tank can be bad, so the AF may struggle with shooting fish in a tank. It depends on the tank's cleanliness, the lighting, etc... An off camera flash could help, but you don't want it bouncing off the glass. One could light from a side of the tank next to the one you're shooting from if you get the fish at a good angle. Another option is to put the flash in a water proof casing and put it in the tank.
hii Rajesh here I purchase Vivitar 2.2x telephoto and .43x wide angle macro lens I have canon sx50 hs camera but I m not use this lens properly pls guide me setting about how I use ? Thank you Sir
No, haven't tried the FZ200, but considering it's more expensive than the Canon SX50 and has half the reach on the long end, I'd probably rule it out. Of course, if the price savings or extra reach aren't important to you, I'm sure it'll be a great camera. :-)
Here's the 7th reason: It can focus right up to the glass when zoomed out. You can get as close to the subjects as you want...or as far away as you want. And with a large zoom, the bokeh is excellent when you focus from far away on small objects. I would've gotten this, except I already got the SX30is (more than) 2 years ago. It is an excellent camera...just incredible...although this one gets more reach and has better ISO performance (although the aperture is a bit smaller wide open). Buy it!
My son-in-law shot an African safari with his SX50-HS camera and did a pretty creditable job of it. He has no photo experience. But that did not seem to matter!
Lorenzo you are right the panasonic lumix zf200, is far better camera then canon sx50, Lumix has 24 optical zoom but has POWER O.I.S. HYBRID STABILIZATION TOO, Canon do not have this advantage. Here in you tuve saw panasonic Lumix zf200 wild life in africa, i was amazed, canon power sx50 is not competition in video quality. Please guy, check the panasonic Lumix fz200 has better pictures image quality then canon sx50 and power O.I.S hybrid (stabilization) canon do not have in sx50, check here in you tube panasonic fz200 wild life in africa. You go to be amazed, with the panasonic Lumix fz200 i have to say good bye to my Nikon 7000.
panasonic lumix fz200 has better image and video quality the the canon, has power IO.S. STABILIZATION That canon do not has HYBRID STABILIZATION like Panonic, Far better quality the canon sx50
ArtoftheImage well i get fuzy detail. The camera performs horrible at low light where most detail is simply lost. I bought it for airplane pictures and found it doesn't even come close to a DSLR quality. Again, this camera is an upgrade from a cell phone and claiming otherwise is misleading people like me
I think the problem is that you had unrealistic expectations of a small sensor compact ultrazoom camera. You are correct that the SX50 doesn't perform well in low light. No compact ultrazoom does. In good light though, the SX50 is superb.
ArtoftheImage I bought a Nikon Coolpix S9600 and was using it to make my video and now i bought this one. I Got a bit disappointed since the video turned out noisy. In the same lighting setup my Nikon Point and shoot camera performs better. Like he mentioned the picture is not crop-able, But photography was never in Mind. Sadly i now have to increase lighting.

Thanks for sharing the info. I've been researching varous bridge cameras & this looks appealing. Especially the super zoom.
The SX50.. It is equal to an Orion 4.5 inch telescope. Really quite incredible!
Thanks for the review already ordered my SX50 now just patiently waiting for it to arrive! :)
I saw this camera a couple of months ago and I got really surprised with the zoom lens! Amazing little thing! But the aperture goes all the way up to f/6.5 or something... But still, it's way better than a point and shoot!
Does this camera take additional long lens?
I'm loving the comments , for sure I will buy one on Monday.

ps: ive since upgraded to d90 then d7000 recently and to get lens tomatch this would cost way too much if they dolens that long ??
I just got mine from Best Buy a few days ago. I already have a Canon T3i, but I wanted something simple and easy to carry around.
I agree I just got rid off my nikon d3100 for the canon powershot sx50 and I'm loving it ;)
what about the quality of the battery? How many pics and duration of recording a movie? Tnx

which camera are u using for this video? is it also sx50?

Hi, does it have selective color effect? and how can an object be manually focused by SX50?
i want to buy telelens for my sx50, on ebay is 4.7X lens, but does it adds the zoom to 50X or stays 4.7X ?
hi friend, can u help me in selecting between canon SX50 and sony HX300...

Hi! Are your filming with the SX50 in this review? If not, what camera are you using?
No, I believe I shot that video with my Nikon D5200 (audio is the built-in mics).
The constant f2.8 is nice, however a long zoom like the SX50 would almost always be used outdoors where light usually isn't as much of an issue. Plus, the SX50 is quite good at higher ISO settings so again, the slower aperture isn't so much of a problem. That's my take anyways. :-)
Awesome! Thanks for the input.
where did you buy it from?
do you think this is good for video thats all i want a good camera for?

no it is not, the pictures taken by sx50 are just one step above cell phone, they have no detail, are fuzy
Simon M Philip Gonzales It being just for fun doesn't rule out DSLRs, those can be for fun too you know. can we control Aperture f-stops in this??
about 300 pics per charge, if I remember the dpreview on this one correctly. it's decent, but not as good as some comparable cameras.
No, haven't tried the FZ200, but considering it's more expensive than the Canon SX50 and has half the reach on the long end, I'd probably rule it out.

No. The Canon SX50 is a fixed lens, point and shoot type camera.
how come?
what does RAW mean?
Best of both worlds! You get to keep your zooms AND get to use your Dad's SX50... BONUS!
I posted shots taken from the Panasonic FZ70 as well as the FZ200 on my flickr page which you can find through my profile on YT.
Good review ...
Great camera, but I finally decided on the Panasonic DMC-FZ70.
My son-in-law shot an African safari with his SX50-HS camera and did a pretty creditable job of it. He has no photo experience. But that did not seem to matter!
I paid 140 for a new one, I know it's pretty old, but it's gonna be my first camera, and for the money I thinks it's a pretty good deal
In practice no. Like a quarter step.
Yes.

I have some rudimentary zoom videos of this canon sx50 on my page, check them if you're interested. This camera is amazing
no, long zoom lens built in is as long as you would ever want
The minimum aperture is like 8, so in practice no.

one reason to not replace your lens with a sx50: sx50 crops the image and any detail is lost. I have one and is the worse mistake i ever made
Not sure what you mean by this. I shoot in RAW with my SX50. It does not crop the image, and I get great photos with good detail.
