    I never realized about the over lap of Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning and Skyrim. We totally skipped Skyrim after being burned by PS version of Oblivion. There is a game breaking bug that prevents you from ever being cured of vampirism that was never patched. Of course we didn't discover this until after we sunk hours into the quest line.

      It wasn't that overlapped, it also had to do with the marketing, which Kingdoms of Amalur did not had and it's pretty much why it failed, like one of my teachers said "if you want to sell something, let people know what you are selling"

    I feel like PlayStation All-Stars could make the list too, because a lot of the common character complaints would’ve likely been a non-issue five or so years later. ALSO didn’t help that Smash overshadowed it two years later and Sony Santa Monica dissolved SuperBot so both hopes for the game to get attention/patches were yoinked in one fell swoop.

    • @Dr.Deluxe
      @Dr.Deluxe 4 года назад +3

      The game just wasn't fun tho. I picked it up and played it twice before realizing it was a half assed attempt at recreating Smash with Playstation characters. Almost everytime someone has tried to replicate Smash they usually don't put in the effort so that's why they die off so quick. Rivals of Aether and Slap City managed to replicate the Smash formula and actually put in work to make a quality game and while they were both eventually overshadowed by Smash Ultimate they're both solid games so they still got dedicated fans and the devs are still dedicated to the game

    I suppose this is more of an honorable mention, since the game eventually came out at a different time, but Disaster Report 4 comes to mind. A game about surviving the aftermath of a massive earthquake in Tokyo, it was originally supposed to come out on March 10th, 2011, but got delayed to the end of the season. Then a day later, an _actual_ earthquake hit Japan, so the game went from being delayed to straight-up cancelled out of respect. The game's studio closed down soon after, but it was picked up by another studio and eventually saw release in 2018. One can only imagine how tarnished Disaster Report's legacy would have become had 4 released on schedule...

    Two Nintendo games come to mind for this phenomenon.
    Kirby's Dreamland 3 is a charming title with some fantastic art design, but it had the bad fortune of coming out both at the end of the SNES's lifespan (when most fans had moved on to the N64) and after Kirby Superstar. The latter title's big expansion of moves and mechanics couldn't help but make the former's focus on slower and simpler levels with puzzled based goals feel a bit underwhelming. Its gotten a cult following since, but had it come right after Dreamland 2, its fate might have been different.
    The other significant one is of course, Federation Force. Whether or not it ever had the chance to be that big of a success, its trailer in 2015 and release in 2016 meant it never would. A co-op shooter with a soccer mini-game was immediately despised by a Metroid fanbase that had been longing for a mainline game for years. Couple that with a controversial art style and being released in the same window that AM2R was taken down meant few hardcore fans (the ones who would make or break its sales) were ever going to give it the benefit of the doubt. A potentially right game at the absolute worst time.

    I'm a bit surprised Metroid Prime Federation Force wasn't even mentioned here, but since the topic is about bigger games overshadowing good games rather than terribly timed marketing, I guess that makes sense. If Federation Force was held back a year and a half and release after Prime 4 and Samus Returns were revealed, people would have been a lot less angry about it.

    • @vocalcalibration8033
      @vocalcalibration8033 4 года назад +2

      It's true. Federation Force is a harmless enough spin-off but I remember it really rubbing me the wrong way at the time just because it was the ON:Y Metroid thing we'd gotten' in so longwith no clear indication Nintendo had other plans for the ip. As it stands I now worry that that was the first and last chance to get some more expanded lore and games that took place through the eyes of characters other than Samus and that makes me a little sad.

    • @jlev1028

      Not to mention, Federation Force was basically released on Metroid's 30th anniversary. Think about that: A spinoff, instead of a mainline title, coming put during one of the most important years in an franchise's lifetime. It's like when Sega decided that Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice would celebrate 25 years of Sonic. Sure, Lego Dimensions released a Sonic DLC at the same time, but that was not published by Sega nor developed by Sonic Team. What I'm trying to say is that it really was bad timing in more ways than one.

    The real tragedy of Shadow Hearts isn't how poorly the first game did but how fucking few people have touched Shadow Hearts: Covenant. I will still fight anyone that argues with me that Shadow Hearts: Covenant is one of the best goddam JRPGs ever. Not only is the story phenomenal (I literally wept at the ending) but the music is outstanding and the cast of characters are just so charming. FFS one of your team is a gay vampire luchador who upgrades weapons by finding random giant ass shit laying around and deciding to make it a weapon.
