Voice Origins: Super Mario 64 vs. Super Smash Bros. Melee (Comparison)

- Charles Martinet has had a number of excellent performances over the years as Mario, but I'm most fond of his first major performance: Super Mario 64. Over the years, I've wondered if those original clips have ever been reused or rereleased in a higher sample quality. Turns out, they have - in Super Smash Bros. Melee.
I made this video by comparing the original clips from 64 with Mario and Luigi's voices in Melee. As it turns out, it's not just quality that's the difference, but also some interesting differences (pitch changes, edits, and straight up mysteries) between the three voices. I've listed my findings in this video for you to judge for yourself.
(I realize this is just about the weirdest and most obscure topic I could have for a video, but Super Mario 64 is my favorite game, so that's the way it is.)
I never understood why Luigi’s voice was just Mario’s but higher pitched for 64 and Melee. It’s so strange but it fits pretty well lol.
Not when Charles Martinet did voice
Luigi in more N64 games after
MK64 USA which are Mario Golf 64,
Mario Party 3 and Mario Tennis. :/

Short answer, Sakurai was lazy.
Branny Cedeño
Yup. Sakurai is a quick cash grabbing buffoon! XD
@@lisamcrad5799 Nah, that's not why. Choosing a right voice for Luigi had nothing to do with that. The answer is still laziness. And also because in Japan, Luigi still had this weird child-like voice you can find in Mario Party and Mario Kart Advance. Sakurai probably wanted to go the easy way with Luigi's voice while respecting the official voice work already done for the character but still didn't want to just reuse the voice lines. Then again, his brilliant solution was to raise the pitch for Mario's voice, slap them to Luigi with adhesive tape and call it a day.

I remember hearing it in Mario vs Donkey Kong on GBA.

Wasnt luigis mansion a launch title, so they could have had normal luigis voices
edit: luigi also had his voice in mario kart 64
Well, the Smash team was probably too far in, this making them not able to change it before launch
I wouldn't be surprised if Melee was in development before or at the same time as Luigi's Mansion. They make no reference toward it in his trophy description and it didn't get a stage til Brawl.
Paul Novacek Well yeah. Melee was supposed to be a launch title, but got pushed back a little bit. It only released 2 months after launch.

Audio files take up a lot of space, so reusing such assets is very storage-efficient. Also time restraints, as others have said. Nothing to do with devs being "lazy," as others have suggested. Sakurai and his team poured their hearts out for this game's completion, and it shows in the final product.
It honestly shows the exact opposite in the final product. Melee was very rushed and it had no right being as good as it is. So much fucking weird glitches and so much broken completely characters and moves.
@@mohamedaminekhadhraoui6417 It depends on what you mean by "broken." I believe that normally "broken" refers to something that overcentralizes the meta game or creates gives a character such an advantage that all others are made unviable, such as Brawl's Meta Knight or Smash 4's Bayonetta. In both of these games, a majority of the top twenty players played the respective game's top character. This has never happened in the history of Melee's competitive scene.
maybe the voice actor didn't feel like showing up again ehehbdjdjsks that sentence was wrong
@@ChristianTheChicken I meant broken in the literal sense. Moves that actually don't work. Moves that work ways that aren't intended. Moves that lack almost completely their hotboxes. Sheilds that are dead on arrival. Infinite on a grab. Phantom hits. The list is really unlimited. Fox being op served the game in being fun. But then there's shit like Kirby and g&w.
@@ChristianTheChicken melee despite being a very fun and excellent game is a perfect example of an unpolished unfinished game.

Mario’s melee voice clips are uncompressed. It’s this video being bad making them sound low quality.
That weird period in time when they hadn't quite settled on a voice for Luigi yet.
I still liked it, though. It felt really natural in Mario Kart 64 and Mario Party.
They also seemed to still be figuring out where to take his personality (Melee was developed alongside Luigi's Mansion, after that I think they knew) so for the first two smash games, they just kind of made him a handsome rogue. Have you seen his weird dance from Smash 64? What a stud.
0:46 I always loved this "EEHAW" voice clip, I used to spam Mario's down+B because I thought it was so funny

1:25 I actually really like that voice line for Luigi, it adds to his weirdness as a character
It's 2 AM. I'm sitting on a toilet watching Mario sounds.
I have always preferred Mario having this voice over his "need a glass of water" tone he developed beginning with Brawl. I loved jolly Mario and he also looked the best in Melee. He sounded and looked like peak Mario. I always mod this voice and model back into the game with every Smash sequel.
Also, I enjoy how the video ends by removing the sound icon and displaying the artwork and titles raw.
My man, it's not charles martinet's fault for becoming old and sounding like he needs a glass of water
@@alesta2212 In the development of Brawl, they actually told him to sound more serious and they stuck with it ever since. Comparatively, in Odyssey, he sounds very much the closest to his golden years and far more lively.
It would've been BETTER if Luigi's voices were used from Luigi's Mansion instead of the high pitched version!

This was something that i noticed a long time ago, and i finally have found someone that noticed that too.
I really don't understand why they removed the "ee-haw" clip from Mario 64, and after watching this video, i really want to know why, maybe was beacause of storage issues.
I really liked this video, keep the good work!
Now i don't feel like the only one who tinked about this.
Thanks! It's definitely a little mystery.
i think that the biggest mystery with that is where said clip would be used in sm64... Maybe as an alternate sound for landing a triple jump?
@@ganondalf8090 or maybe an alternate triple jump voice clip?
My theory is it had to do with then planning a horse. If I'm correct that was Mario 64 that they originally planned the idea before reusing it for Ocarina of Time

If we're going for pitch accuracy too, then the samples are sliiightly more lower-pitched in mario 64 than this video presents (mario getting burned by lava for example).
I looked up a longplay to be sure, thought i was going crazy.
Mario (n64): hoo
Mario (melee):HoOO
Luigi (melee):HOOOOOOOOOO
I regret to be in Super Mario 64 forever
Weird how I never noticed Mario's Melee voice was all clips from SM64. I guess that's also why I thought he sounded so much older in Brawl, since the voice in Melee was probably at least 12 years old lol
The nostalgia I have for these voice lines is immense
0:59 that’s sounds like that to Mario from Mario 64 DS
Melee is the worst Smash game because of 1 simple reason:
-Luigi's just a high pitched Mario.
EVEN SSB64
Its also got a toxic elite player base

Mario Kart 64
Mario Party 1, 2, and 3
Mario Golf
Mario Tennis
Luigi's Mansion (unsure if it released in Japan earlier than Smash Melee but it did for the U.S.)
You're entirely wrong.
@average fart pørn enjoyer (2 years later) You're actually wrong, only the Japanese version of MK64 has someone other than Charles for Luigi, the overseas version uses Charles Martinet's voice
Mario Parties 1 and 2 do use someone other than Charles, but Mario Party 3 uses Charles Martinet
Mario Golf and Tennis *do* use Charles Martinet, but his voice does sound different (Most likely because his voice hadn't quite yet been set in stone)
Also the Mario spinoffs are more important than you think, we usually only get 1 mainline Mario game per console, sometimes 2 (Or, in the case of the NES, 4) so spinoffs help fill in the gaps (With 1 being the case for the N64)
Also, Super Mario Advance, releasing in March of the same year of Melee, also contains Charles Martinet's voice clips
Luigi's voice is Mario's voice high pitched, which was done to save space.

Luigi's voice adored me man. I liked when he shared the same voices with mario. I wish he still did.
I miss when Mario says OOF after getting hit, it was my favorite for how funny sounds.
0:35 Goated sound. This version of Marios voice was the best.
Watching this just reminds me of how weird Melee's aesthetic is.
Most of the characters look really off-model, even compared to games that would release on the Gamecube. It's the same with Luigi's Mansion, characters just end up looking like vertex doubled N64 models, which means you end up with really strange looking characters that were designed to look good using very few polygons, so the designs seem really dated when compared to everything else on the Gamecube. Just look at Mario from Super Mario Sunshine, he's basically the same as he looks today, and that was only one year later, yet it feels so much more modern because they fixed his design.
Melee used the 64 era designs. It was almost a launch title. You could consider this a transition game, of sorts. Luigi was even the only character playable on the Gamecube before melee’s release.
0:29
Why is Luigi’s so high definition
Honestly, I prefer when Luigi's voice is higher than Mario, not lower, it really makes him sound younger, almost 19 when Mario's 21.
Edit: WHEN I SAID IT MAKES HIM SOUND 19, I DIDNT MEAN HE WAS ACTUALLY 19 IN THE GAME, SAME WITH MARIO SOUNDING LIKE HES 21, DOSEN'T MEAN HE IS ACTUALLY THAT AGE.
it doesnt really sound younger to me, just pitched higher
@metal mario yeah i think that voice also fits with Luigi and yeah i understand that it sounds younger cause the original voice of Luigi makes him sound like an old man of probaly 47 years old idk
Mario's 21? Good lord he ages horrible, mario looks to be in his mid 40s to early 50s
@@jeffcase7827 Well, No not now, Right now he's in his late 30's, Luigi is about...37, so Mario is 39, Since it's 2020 and Mario has been around since 1981, that makes him look his age, I'm 21 right now, as I was made a character in 1999, (although I was a power up 1996, so just call it a 3 year pregnancy)
they're twins and middle aged men wtf are you talking about
I like to imagine that this voice clip 0:46 was supposed to be in Mario 64, For example, Originally Mario would ride on Yoshi, but since due to coding error and almost time for the game to release in Japan, They only made Yoshi appear on top of Peach’s castle, but for the Voice clip, I’d like to imagine whenever Mario jumped off of Yoshi the “Yee-Haw!” Voice clip would play, but that’s just my opinion.

Mario has a better "Oof" than Roblox. Change my mind.
They probably ran out of dev time to give luigi a proper voice.
Quite possibly because the game was made in less than a year, or a time frame like that.
Fun fact: the ‘uuh’ sound plays in some new super Mario bros. Games when you get the flag
Mario’s first voice appearance wasn’t Super Mario 64, it’s was Mario’s Fundamentals/ Mario’s Game Gallery
Reminds me of the times when Luigi was just sprite of Mario but green.
I always thought the grunt sound at 0:28 sounded so weird for Mario
I think the reason they chose to reuse voice clips from 64 was because Charles Martinet was busy voicing Luigi in Luigi’s Mansion. This was probably the only way to get both games to come out around the same time.
