I remember as a young boy seeing my grandmother make biscuits this way, to an old rhyme:
(flour) One for Peter, one for Paul, one for the Good Lord who made us all.
A good pinch of soda, a little salt
And if they don't turn out, it's not my fault.
Then she'd make a well and pour in half & half, using the extra milkfat in place of lard or butter. Never any sugar. She'd say, "If you want your biscuit sweet, that's what the jam is for." Oh, how I miss that woman.

I came from what everybody thought was the perfect family. We were from the outside. My mother is actually a pretty cold person, yet everybody thinks he’s perfect. That’s the way she likes it to be.
Please try not to carry that stuff in your heart. I know it’s hard to move past it. I Itrstruggle for many years dealing with the pain of feeling cheated and unloved.
I just know that I’m going to do didifferent for my life and for my children I had all the trappings grownup. The new cars.. College education paid for. Horseback riding lessons. A baby grand piano bought for me just so I can learn how to play piano.
My dad was busy with his career. My mom was busy with her career. As children we were just extensions of them like pieces of furniture.
My mother only cooked on Sundays and she never showed us any recipes. My brother was never interested. I was but she always made me feel like I was in the way. I can count to three times my mother ever hugged me.
Now I’m married and I have a little girl and I spend as much time as possible in the kitchen with her doing then activities. I’m always hugging on her I know she gets sick of it I tell her I love her like 20 times a day.
I’ve learned recipes from my stepmother and from my mother-in-law and we even made a little cookbook that we could pass down to all the grandkids. You can always start new.
So when my daughter has children. We Will be able to cook together. And add new recipes to our cookbook. Hopefully it’ll be something that they’ll pass down to their children for generations.
      Hugs💕💕

Hi Emmy, my mom made biscuits or cornbread for almost every supper. (she referred to lunch as dinner) She did it the way you talked about with the bowl full of flour, she kept that wooden bowl full of flour all the time & just stuck it in a cabinet reserved just for it. She baked them on a flat baking sheet, not touching so the were brown on all sides. If there were leftover bisciuts on the counter my friends would eat them up, cold! I took those biscuits for granted because I had them practically every day. Alas, I never did learn to make biscuits like Mom but I have that wooden biscuit bowl on display! Thanks for another great video, you always have the best content. XOXO

I inherited my grandma's biscuit bowl and it has been working at least weekly for almost 100 years. I've always used self rising flour so all I need do is add the lard and a punch of sugar before using a couple of forks to cut the fat into the flour. Plop in some buttermilk or heavy cream (depending on what you're eating) until you get a good dough and cut and bake.
It's a 5 minute process once you learn it. Then put the lid on the bowl and put it back in the cabinet until next time.

Nothing says "I love you" more than fresh biscuits with a meal. Mom used her flour scoop to kind of measure the flour. And, measuring spoons to pair the baking powder and sugar to the scoops of flour. Shortning was dolloped into the mix. She would fork the mix and then add milk. She would pat out the almost all mixed gloop and cut the rounds with a special glass that made them just the right size. Nothing finer! I'll have to try this mix! Thank you for making these! My great-grandmother used pretty much the exact same recipe for her biscuits, and now my mom cooks them! Granny made a batch of them for dinner almost every night for four generations of kids. When my grandmother was little, they went completely broke, with almost no money to feed themselves. Granny would buy three simple ingredients (all purpose flour, shortening, and milk) and all they would eat was biscuits and white flour gravy. Granny would cry because she couldn't feed her family, and Poppa would always hug her, kiss her on the cheek, and say "This is all a man needs" and always ate them with a smile, so they became a traditional side at dinner. There hasn't been a single family gathering without a huge batch of Granny's biscuits in decades. Seeing Emmy make them brought back precious memories of my mom and me making them together and a smile to my face. Thank you so much, Emmy ☺️

In the UK we call Biscuits, Scones. I make them every Saturday as our mid day treat. However I don't use sugar in them but put dried fruit such as Sultanas in them.
220 gm self raising flour (ie with added raising agent. ) 1 tea spoon baking powder, !/2 tea spoon salt, mix, 60 gm butter or margarine add enough milk to make a slightly sticky dough. Like you I shape with my hands this makes 6 or 7 for me. Brush top with milk. Cook on 200 deg C oven for 14 minutes. Whats not to like. If you can do this you can make soda bread - Its just a really BIG scone. Bakes for at least 40 minutes.

My grandma has not made biscuits for a few years now because of her declining health. I decided to master her recipe, several batches of hockey pucks later, I can turn out a batch that may come close to being half as good as my grandmas. only problem is I seem to only be able to make a batch large enough to feed a small army, oh well there are worse problems to have. Emmy, Home-Made biscuits are ALWAYS Best!! 😊☀️👍 there’s so many great things you can eat them with and even do with them. The excellent accompaniment with stews, Soups, roasts, breakfast, anything savory or that you would need a slice of bread with biscuits are not only warm and comforting but they add extra love to the meal too. I say I love because it’s homemade and as we all know homemade food is always some thing that gives an extra warm feeling because you take the time out to make some thing special for your loved ones and family. When you were making these biscuits, I right away thought of my mom (Lord Rest Her soul). She used to do what was called drop biscuits. Which is similar to the recipe but just a loser batter and take a small measuring cup (not too small), and drop them on a greased cookie sheet. They made a bigger biscuit, but the lumps and bumps were more noticeable. These worked terrific with what I mentioned earlier in the post. The good thing about homemade biscuits also is there quite versatile you can even make a version of shortcake with them. Or what would seem to taste like a shortcake, just with buttermilk. You would just need to add a little more sugar or honey instead of sugar to the batter and like the recipe you were doing in this video, the biscuits will be A little sweeter tasting. Which goes delicious with strawberries berries sliced peaches (fresh macerated) so many possibilities. Anyway, just wanted to share. Thank you for sharing this video as always you are awesome!! Keep being awesome!! 😊☀️👍
PS: have you ever thought of possibly having a show on food TV? You would be great on the show. Just wanted to share. 😊

My grandmother told a loving story about her own mama making cornbread or biscuits on her old fashioned kitchen table, which had built in drawers with flour or corn meal. She simply scooped all the ingredients onto the table and mixed it like you did here. She used her cast iron spider skillet with a cover...burying it in the hot coals of the fireplace. By the time the men were done with the morning chores of milking the cows or collecting eggs, the bread would be hot and ready, crispy on the outside. Of course they served it with their own dairy butter and blackberry jam made from the berries picked in the summer by the whole family, or the apple butter made from the neighbor's orchard. My great-grandfather was so very fond of that cornbread and jam, or biscuits and apple butter!

The biscuit recipe you made here is actually a staple in the southern U.S. My mother was from Mississippi and made them several times per week and just like you did, she never measured. They were great with butter caramel syrup. She would add some sugar in a skillet and when it caramelized add water and then boil it until thick. If she didn't feel like making individual biscuits, she would press the entire ball of dough into the iron skillet and cook it on the stove until it was done and then flip it to finish cooking. I make it now and then but I use butter instead of shortening although shortening produces a much lighter fluffier product. (Trying to limit my intake of shortening.) Great video as always!
