My grandfather used to make homemade biscuits and gravy every morning all us kids would stay the night. He never gave anyone a recipe, but this is the closest thing I've seen to what his biscuits looked like, he just pushed his down a bit thinner. The fluffiest on the inside, with still the crunchiest outside. Thank you for this

I haven't had a decent biscuit since 1996 right before my sweet 86 year old grandmother passed away. She made a mess of biscuits for me about 2 months before she got sick. She tried to tell how she made her biscuits. She never measured a thing. She would say that she used a "smidgen of this and a bit of that. I honestly think that your way is the same as hers. I'm going to make these this evening. We have a convection oven and it may not be quite big enough to move around. But it bakes so good. I will need to just watch them.

I’ve been playing around with making biscuits, daily for the past week or so. Strictly been using self rising flour and whole buttermilk but experimenting with lard, butter and Crisco. My best batch thus far has been with the same lard she’s using, butter second best and crisco was my least favorite. Wondering if I try the all purpose if I’d get the desired biscuit.
What else is crazy is that I could make fine biscuits when I was a teen but as a 50yr old adult, not so much.

And who would have thought that butter and lard are actually better for you than margarine and shortening.
I recently found this out. Lard, once the staple of most homes in America, suffered mainly due to a smear campaign from the makers of Crisco.
To be fair though. Pure lard is better. The Armor and White brands seen in supermarkets is hydrogenated, which makes it little, if any better than vegetable shortening.

What if I use regular chocolate chips rather than semi-sweet? I'm a novice when it comes to baking?

I find baking powder adds a bitter taste and so I think granny tossed in some baking soda to remove the bitterness what do you think?
