Thank you for the guidance on all your videos it makes it a lot more easier to understand and gives you the confidence to give it a shot. Job well done.
Good job. Friend of mine died and I took over his Jeep restoration. It had power steering but all parts were in a milk crate. Took one apart 15 yrs ago but it looked foreign to me. I may just change to manual steering as is on my 77. Thanks for doing this as now at least I have a clue to use the power. I've worn out a couple of manuals new and then partial rebuilds and just put on the new crown replacement made in Spain. I now have 0 slop in the wheel and feels like new. I was going to try the borgeson unit on the restoration. Made in USA but the 16 to 1 ratio is all they do in my spline count. That's ok. I got both ratios from Jeep years ago and didn't notice the difference. Doesn't make sense how I got 16 to 1 from Jeep but it happened. The factory ratio was 24 to 1. Both work ok. Thanks for doing this video. Very good.
You got that right! It seems like there were 4 different engineers working on the PS pump and brackets and none of them talked to each other. I had fun getting it all back together on my '84 CJ7.
Thank you for the video! Any suggestions on how to measure and change the power steering fluid. My 1974 J110 AMC 250 has the same system and I just want to prevent any issues. Thanks
Turkey baster for removal. Your cap should have a dipstick connected to it. If not then fill it up to about 2” from the top. You just need to make sure the pump wheel is fully immersed.
Did you install the Lares brand of power steering pumps? I noticed it looks like the pully is going to line up with the front main drive pully (not the back one). Was the back one only used to drive the smog pump? It looks like once I get the correct pully for my Lares power steering pump, I will have to get a new belt to drive everything (alternator, water pump and power steering pump).
Sorry so long in response. The pump that I used was, and is, original. I don’t recall what company supplied them, so I will assume AMC. If you have the dual channel pulley, it was more likely the Smog/air pump but that also depends on the year.
For the first bracket you install on your video, I have an existing stud installed already on one of those top two bolts that go into the manifold. It was used to support the smog pump. Is there a trick to remove that? Hopefully I don't have to weld something onto it to get it to back out of the manifold.
@@coolguy_CJ7 I'm good! cool guy! I figured it out. I was able to remove my existing stud pretty easy. Thank you very much for your video's!!! They are VERY HELPFUL!!!!
Do you happen to have a parts list for the bolt sizes you utilized? If not, that is allright...I will just watch the video again and mark them down myself.
I unfortunately don’t. I want to say that I replaced them all with stainless steel. Or at least the ones that I could easily get at the hardware store.
Have you ever added power steering to a manual steering setup? I have a manual steering 89 YJ I’d like to add power to. I’m thinking you just add a new box and pump?
That would be correct. But since you have a YJ, the steering boxes and tubes are not compatible/exchangeable with a CJ. Just so you know. I found that out the hard way. I believe the pump is that same.
Just in time! Boutta be converting my manual '76 Jeep CJ5 to power steering, and this is gunna be a great resource. Also, @cool guy, Do you know what the differences between the power steering setups between 76-79 and the 80-83/86? I see different parts listed for these at quadratec, and you seem to be the guy who would know the differences.
I believe the pump is the same for all OEM AMC engines. It’s just the mounting brackets and hoses that differ and those differences are for the inline 6 258 and 232. 76-79’s intake manifold are cast iron. 80-86 is an aluminum manifold. The V8’s all have the same block structure. I don’t know anything about the 4 cylinder. The mounting brackets, I don’t think anyone makes. You’ll have to find those used. I’d go with Rock auto first for the pump and hoses.

Great to hear. Glad they are beneficial. Reach out with questions.

Interesting. I honestly didn't know the ratio until you presented it. Thank you for that. Now we all know :)
Thanks for posting this. It is what I needed to see to put this thing back together. Probably a good idea to repaint my brackets first.
Painting the brackets for sure. You don’t need to do anything other than polish the pivot arm bracket since it’s aluminum.

AMC wasn't known for their engineering prowess or quality.
Very helpful on my 81 cj5, Thank you!
Glad to help.
Very very helpful. Thanks and awesome video!
Glad to be of service.

Great video!
I appreciate the feedback. I hope I was able to help.
Can you tell me what the threads are for the 4.5 bolt? I need to buy a replacement and looks to be metric.

Send me some picts at dellis6914@gmail.com so that I can see what you've got going on.

Would you happen to have a part number for that Power steering Pump? I have the exact setup for my 77 Jeep CJ5.. Thanks
Are you looking to replace it or an OEM part?
Thanks for sharing! Just curious, where did you locate the torque specs?
FSM for the 79 series.
@@coolguy_CJ7 thank you, much appreciated!
