Are Crop Sensors Even Worth It Anymore?

- Canon and Sony have come out with very small full frame cameras. They are light and cheap. Canon R8, Sony ZVE1 or A7C II. Ok Sony is never cheap, but aps-c and micro four thirds cameras are often more expensive and heavier. What is the point?

Bitcoin is getting pummeled today with everything else 🫤
You can switch just your CPU with an AMD 5900/5950XT and leave everything unchanged. You will be chugging through those files, even the hard one, like a breeze.
Its relatively old tech, cheap and compatible with your setup. You could do the switch yourself provided you have some thermal paste to apply. There is plenty of tutorial on line too.
That interaction with random man was wholesome, bless this guy
The passersby heightened the excitement of the show. I must say, ZVE1 looked steady and cinematic.
Nice to see alien come down from planet camera to interact with a fellow human.
cuz its the new est camera ever
That old man was a gem
The ZV-E1 looked pretty darn good in this video
I chose MFT for the compact setup. Taking wildlife photos from a kayak, the smaller and lighter lenses are very welcome.
You're the most famous camera guy man :D Thanks for the shoutout again
Get that guy back on the channel. He's way more entertaining than you. love you
Mate, that was a heartwarming street interaction. I love stuff like that. Had a few guys like that approach me while filming in Japan.
I clicked like, just for the conversation with the old fella. Not that I didn't like the rest as well. You have a good heart Kasey.
Such a nice dude you've met.
That old guy was wholesome :D
I enjoy these a lot! I wonder, when you're out vlogging like this, do you adjust white balance or let the auto mode do it? If you decide to answer this noob question in the next vlog I wouldn't mind, I can handle the heat!
I set to 5600k.
"Oh, Cameras! Yes. My friend had many cameras once. But he died."
Oh boy. Bright future in this tech.
Pretty sure that guy was the president for Nikon, and that was their subtle way of checking you out for future sponsorship. You did well, but you should have asked him if he wanted to go get a beer. Would have been fun for all =)
I am digging this channel. But you don't even need me...😄 I really liked the interaction with the passerby. It reminds me of the accessibility of this channel. Great information delivered with great humour AND deep photographic knowledge. Very refreshing, joyful stuff. Thank you!
Hi Kasey. I remember you saying, you want to use ef glass on something. Just borrowed in our store 5D mark II. Installed Magic Lantern and i have to say, it looks great. It’s like 200$ so there’s nothing to lose. Simple camera, manual only but fun.
This look with the 18mm and the flowers 😊
More social interaction like this please
"All I want is the perfect camera"
Is the ZVE1 it? Man you make that camera look awesome! I'm just a youtube hobo that uses cameras that I find in the dumpster behind KFC, but this camera looks like maybe I should get a 2nd job at McDonalds as a fry cook, so I can save for a year to buy it.
if it had an EVF...but there can never truly be a perfect camera
Sensor technology has become very well advanced, the APS-C sensors now are performing very well , the stacked sensor from the XH2s is a marvel. The 40mb sensor on the XT5 is superb. Adding to that , gear weight saving.
That's the most perfect camera. Great footage, light, great for vlogging, 4K 120, great dynamic range. You've never had better footage and your skin looks good. Mark from Camera Crisis had a really nice attachment that works like an EVF. Try that out with the zooms.
Yes I am a photographer scrub/hobo who switched from his first DSLR to my current full-frame Canon RP. Do I wish it shot slow motion? Yes. Do I wish the 4K option was usable? Yes. Am I overall happy with my camera? Yes. I'll probably upgrade to a higher-grade R camera at some point, but I dig it. I was left with a few crop sensor lenses that couldn't be adapted, but I was able to sell them. That ZVE1 really does look good.
Thank you for answering my question!
The best thing about watching videos from the past is all the background people and scenery thank god they didn’t have broken back then as all those great old videos would be boring
The ZVE1 is the most underrated camera on the market. It’s a supercharged A7Siii with better autofocus and additional features. You keep hearing it overheats. I’ve had one a year and it’s never overheated. It may overheat if you want to film for ages, but for RUclips videos etc it is no problem. Awesome camera.
Always enjoyed my D500 and now an loving my R7.
I got the GH7 and I'm loving it but, on my test the eye detection mode on human detection doesn't work! If I switch to eye detection mode for animal detection mode though, it works flawless: Panasonic needs to fix this, but I guess they will never do it.
It's easy to turn it off by mistake. Works fine on the G9ii
Maybe you just look more like an animal lol 😂
The more time goes on, the more crop sensors make sense IMO. Better tech and AI noise removal makes a truly dramatic difference. You can have compact AND great image quality these days.
For the most budget solution (cheapest) check if your motherboard bios supports upgrade the processor to r5800X3D to get better performance, the graphics rtx 2070 8GB is a bit older but still OK (no need to upgrade), and add some ram memory if possible. (You`ll need 800w psu or more too). All in all, it would cost you less than $500.
You 100% do not need 800w for a 5800x3d and 2070 lmao.
For photo and video production the X3D line does not offer any more performance. The Ryzen 7 5800x or better the 5700x will be a better choice and cheaper.
And you certainly don't need X3D SKUs unless you play (demanding) video games. And even then you could make do with a 5600 (non X), and you would certainly be fine with the latter for most productive tasks.
@@narsustv1331 @mooksdfe guys I play with 5950x and before that I had 3700x and the difference is BIG (especially when you're doing image stabilization and color grading)!
@@ScrattleGG if already has 600W then he is ok, although I suspect he has 500W and will have to improve it. 800w is future proof for further upgrade...
In place where I live: FX30 1.800 €, ZV-E1 2.100 €, you are lucky!
full frame is the medium format crop now what do we do?
That old man smacked the heck out of you. Was ready to call the mounties to come rescue you.
Sears is gone... Ice cream truck back there! Love that guy. I love when people want to talk. The big problem with the ZV-E1 is the price. Have a rockin' day!
2400 dollars being a cheap horrible computer??? i would of built you a BEAST for that price.. take me to him and we can jump him together lol
Yeah, I was torn between applauding the entrepreneurship for charging 2400, and calling it out. Would be nice if one of the guys that sends him gear would just send him a 12 or 16 core cpu already. Even if he just jumped up to 8 cores on gen5 it would likely smooth out allot of the wrinkles. I doubt it would be fun for him, but he probably could just reach out to Ryzen with the desire to make a video about upgrading his outdated editing system. May just get an out of the box ready to go build, or Gerald could reach out the olive branch of peace and help him build it.
From what I remember, he bought a pretty decent machine back in 2019. It was not trash at all. The problem is that the GPU prices were incredibly high at the time and he went with a 2070 (1000$+ *CAD* on its own) and IIRC, PSU, RAM and even SSD price were higher than usual.
@@JetBen555 yes I remember those times. I stuck it out with my 2070 super and didn’t go to the 3000 series due to high prices and unavailability. I now have the 4070
Dang my Lenovo laptop blows his PC away and it was cheaper lol
Remember that this is in Canadian dollars and GPU prices were fucking insane during that time.
What a nice old guy!
I think apsc cameras are great for a second or third camera sitting on a tripod. I use an R8 and my primary and R10 as a B camera
The last segment where you cranked everything up makes in look like a 70s 8mm reel that was pushed three stops.🤣🤣
Oh wow someone asked questions I wanted and the answers have not disappointed. With adapting lenses - nikon f mount lenses adapted to fuji via fringer are stable like hell. Tamron and sigma just suck at making well stabilised lenses :p most of the time.
5:44 my favorite moment of this channel
A FF sensor is also a crop of something larger.
7:25 Intel CPU (11th gen or better) and Apple M all have a built-in media engine to encode AND decode ALL the HEVC H.265/264 10bit files that you can think of (no matter what resolution, frame rate or LGOP or All-i) they can play it back. The media engine inside dedicated GPU are mostly used to encode (useful for live streaming games) not so much for decoding, it can do like H264 decoding no problem but for all the H265 stuff is messy.
Full AVX-512 support on 11th gen and the earlier batches of 12th gen and taking the 11900k for example x265 playback via handbrake only gains 0.5 fps (6.8fps off vs 7.3fps on) and at a huge cost in power consumption. 5 to 8% gain in performance comes at a 20%+ cost in power used. If you are not running a 1 - 3x negative multiplier and dont have a 280mm + aio or a Strong dual tower air cooler downclocking and or crashing is bound to happen. Often times depending on the exact instruction set being used AVX2 workloads can be harder on the Intel system than 512. Kaseys R5 3600x should be good for around 4 fps without AVX2/512f and the top cpu his mainboard can handle the R9 5950x is good for 11.3 fps beating all of intels 11th gen even without and AVX support so it seems cores are king
@@gtijason7853 I'm not really sure what you are talking about with your handbrake gains and AVX instruction non sense. It's not really complicated, if you have an Intel CPU (11th gen or better) you can easily play back 10bit 422 h265 in any NLE, without breaking a sweat. The CPU itself doesn't even lift a finger, it's all done by the media engine inside the iGPU. Even a mobile i5 with a 25W TDP can do it ... so forget about power consumption and AIO cooler. Google something like Puget intel decode Davinci.
I love peoples obsession with full frame. Used micro four loser gear is cheaper to acquire 🤩
I sold my sony A7R4 for an olympus. 60MP. Overkill. It gave me nothing my OM-1 gives me. Nothing.
That butterfly at 3:50 looked deadly
Im photographer mostly using large format ad sometimes z8 but love your channel
Nikon z dx 18-140 f3.5-6.3 vs sony 18-135 f3.5-5.6 which one is better?
Amen on the reviews who only read the spec sheet
You should interview random people about what camera they use and make an episode of it. :) Please do it!
ZV-E1 looks great, have to admit even though I hate the body for its ergonomics.
Interesting…..I was just thinking about this question as it relates to this channel…..
The idea that full frame is cheaper than aps-c of m4/3 sounds really appealing until you want to buy a lens. The Sony ZVE1 colours are a little more pleasing than the the A7SIII out of the box but if I won the lottery tomorrow I'd still buy the A7. Maybe Canon/Red will come out with a game changer next year for video centric cameras (fingers crossed).
To be fair camera companies make the most profit on the lens and if they had choice they'd charge you the same for any size sensor. For example the Panasonic micro 4/3 Leica 25-50 is $1,800 it's also big and heavy. In general the FF lenses are more expensive but it's getting to be any non kit lens is expensive. So small sensor lens start lower but they still get marked up unless you go 3rd party.
Canon?! No way..
Plenty of budget lenses for full frame, especially used.
@@Desuetus There's a special Canon "tax" that you have to pay.
I’m going to be purchasing my first full frame camera very soon. The camera of choice will be the Sony ZV E1. I see that you have sung your praises on the Zeiss primes, and my question to you is this…….if there were two Zeiss lenses for me to purchase (one for vlogging, and one for portraits/video), which two would you suggest for me to get?
Great video, my man. 🍻

@@cameraconspiracies ~ good lookin’ out.
700 mega bit is like 5gb per minute of footage 😳 that is insane
I gotta say Kasey. Your last 2 videos on the ZV-E1 look freaken amazing man. It could well be because you're not using your usual mist filter, but the colors are popping, the image is sharp. Man I thought the ZV-E1 was just hyped up, but it could just be the best bang for buck at the moment.
It’s the best camera for the money on the market.
The colours are very unnatural.
@@audioupgrades he could have put in in S Cinetone for great looking footage straight out of camera. Standard profile which he is using has some punch by design. The setting at the end he has just put it on that to show the extreme.
@@wakeywarrior Agree. S-Cinetone is a great starting point and most times you don't have to do much to it.
I want you to know you are doing a good job, Kasey.

Came for the tech, stayed for the man.
Hey Review some entery level cameras I just got the Canon R50 combo kit..

Love my G9ii. Im not a vlogger. It does more than I could ever utilize. Just trying to decide on the best Wildlife lens to choose.
I have the pana/leica 100-400 ii for my g9ii, lots of reach.
what a nice old man
Photographers are like windshield wipers, looking left to right... can be easily replaced by AI... How very true !!!! (from a photographer)🤣
You got to get on Radioman 2, there's basically no choice between Blender and Maya, no soft-shaded bounding box, can you imagine working on the titan X22 fi (least arrow) without soft shading bounding box? The secret I imagined was a diamond glass, each object re-lasers the light 1/256 transform % dirty laser. This way you only need a candle in the grand canyon bat cave. Maya had the worst A.I. of all, so it evolved the slowest.
Two choices are better than 1.
Looking forward to the "Phohographers are like..." tear-off calendar
ZVE1 looks great! I would go with it but want more MP for photos.
@@mr.t8369 unless you crop a lot or intend to print them in large format it doesn’t matter. Your 4K monitor only has 8 milion pixels 🤷♂️
I did a video about photos on ZVE1, they are very good. Someone else did one vs A7Cii and unless you crop in a lot, the photos are basically identical.
I was on vacation recently and watched full frame owners cart out their hard case from the trunk to load their massive lenses. I had my new G9 mk 2 and Leica lenses in my sling bag. There just isn’t a world where for travel photography that massive full frame makes any sense.
Full frame gear can be light as heck.
Yeah I have seen some nice primes. But for any reach or zooms, it’s gets crazy big and quick. I saw people
With dedicated hard cases…an extra piece of luggage. And they are just taking it a short distance. I carry so much more and it’s so small and light with MFT. Optimal nature/hike solution.
And the video…perfectly stabilized footage as if on a gimbal. So good
Nothing wrong with crop per se but when one can have a Nikon Z6 series camera that is as compact (or more so) than a decent M43 camera why settle for lesser image quality?
Because the gh7 still offers some features that is usefull and needed for film folks
omg that old man got really flabbergasted when heard about the 150 THOUSANDS followers. I wish he offered you his relative's vast collection of cameras ;)
Just wanted to say, @ 2:47, Fuji 500mm is on the lens roadmap chart of GFX mount, a medium format.
I don't know why Fuji want to call their 44x33 sized sensor a medium format, which is far smaller than real Medium Format film dimension..
I know the cinema industry calls 135 film format a LARGE Format but.. Anyway! Good Show!
It's coming for aps-c as well.
Unlike in the early 2000s, Full frame has gotten cheap in the used market, there's no reason to go crop anymore to save money, that argument is dead
Well, define "cheap". I mean I generally agree but "cheap" still isn't cheap enough for many of us.
What about the lens´s price full frame vrs M43 vs APSC, I think is better have knowledge about phothography and video
@@schmui The Sony a7sii you can find for about $600-700, sometimes cheaper. For most of the good full frame cameras you get today, this is far more affordable a price point. You can go cheaper for full frame if you don't mind 1080p video, because the a7 often is under $500.
You often have to look for a good deal on these, with Mercari shockingly having some gems. Like for example, a Sony a7iii for $400-700. Probably a bigger risk compared to KEH or MPB, but for full frame, there are plenty of less expensive options that are far cheap compared to picking up a modern Sony a7 model.
@@Ryan_Wiseman
Yeah but for 500€ I can get a used GH5 with internal 10bit video, very good IBIS, flippy screen and the ability to put all the friggin lenses on it. I'd rather have that than pay more for a bigger sensor and not much else.
Btw if you buy an Intel 12th+ gen processor with an internal graphics card, you will have the encoders and decoders needed for 10 bit h265 422
Hey any issues with overheating on the sony zve1? Considering to buy this camera. Thanks
Nope.
if you dont want a mac, intel cpus with quicksync igpus and the new intel arc dgpus all have hardware decoders for 10 bit hevc. No other hardware on Windows has those hardware decoders for whatever reason. Intel Arc cards also have a really good av1 hardware encoder so for video work they're a surprisingly good pick. but the new Nvidia 40 series cards also have good av1 hardware encoding now so if you play video games then using an intel cpu with quicksync and an nvidia 40 series is probably your best bet
He plays Frogger in real life lol
I'll settle for a Z50ii. crop sensors are amazing tools.
High resolution non stacked FF bodies should offer m43 crop mode with high frame rates then we don't need stacked sensor and bluky telephoto lenses. Currently G9 MK2 and 100-400 makes sense in terms portability ofcourse there is small trade of on IQ and noise. ( for stills)
Your intro should be : he's complaining about cameras. But sing it as : he's walking somewhere song
Here in Brazil the fx30 is slightly cheaper than the zve1.
You can get a little under three times the CPU performance with a 16-core Ryzen 5950X without having to buy any other components, can be used in the same motherboard (update to the latest BIOS first). That CPU has become quite cheap. Even if applications can’t use all 16 cores the single-core performance is around 30 % faster compared to the 3600X. The GPU’s amount of VRAM with 8 GB is also a bottleneck, current Radeon 7000 GPUs with 16 to 24 GB VRAM are relatively cheap and their software support is getting better since many users are fed up with NVIDIA’s prices.
I bought a Panny G85 to get into making videos. Now I'm also doing stills and really enjoying the camera. However, as I get better is my money better spent buying better M43 gear, or do I switch to FF and begin upgrading that??
Yes, even 1 inch sensors are worth it, which is why I paid 1100$ for an RX100 VII. I don’t want to lug around a brick body/lens and I am not a professional photographer (thankfully). Noise AI removal algos do wonders and the best camera is the one I have with me (without looking like a children stalker).
Maybe the reach of the lenses. You can't overcome physics - if you want longer reach, and a smaller set up, you will always be better off with a cropped sensor than full frame. Also in theory, cropped sensors should give you higher frame rates as it takes less processing power to read out from them. It is quite simple actually - physics.
Yes plus pair full frame lens with apsc sensor and add a teleconverter now you're at 1000mm or 1250😂
Tell that to Nikon 600mm f6.3 vs Olympus 300mm f4.
600mm f6.3 on mft would be pretty sweet though. Good luck walking anywhere with a 1200mm f-anything to match the range in fullframe
@@Renderprism yes it exists Canon 1200 mm but heavy. Oru buy an a1 and crop anyway cause we can. Apsc is sweet spot between mft and full frame.

Its no different from shooting a crop sensor, pixel size is similar.
Xh2s really needs two things to be an unbelievably great option
Improve af drasticallly i mean in all modes it has to have the same af. When your in 6.2k open gate its worse and 4k 120p and 256p af drops off..
Even the normal modes it needs a more sticky af. Thats all. It has unbelievable low light af and as long as there is one subject in the frame with a new lense and not a tricky background it performs well.
Remove the 4k120 crop..
Thats about it..
Its so close to an unbelivable all rounder.
The fuji lenses now have been revamped across the board. Whole set of new primes
And now the zooms are now nearly done

It will come then what crop system can offer better. Combo of photo video and great selection of good quality small lenses.
Totally worth it….
How much footage do you end up with now for one of your typical videos vs length of the finished product? Same question when but when you were in your first year?
