We lived in SJC along the Ortega Hwy and every rock in those jettys passed right by our house. Some rocks so big that only a couple could fit in the truck beds. Incalculable amounts tidepool sea life was lost to that construction FWIW.
I love seeing historical footage like this, background music made it even better ! P.S. it spawned a great fishing community that generates many dollars to the surrounding area. If you want to surf trestles, doheny ,salt creek are right next door.
Wonderful film. As a kid I remember the break water work. I should have paid more attention to it. The harbor is truly a Gem of Orange County and my Darling Sandee and I enjoy it often.
Building this harbor truthfully benefitted no one other than the corrupt developers, and other political and corporate capitalists... President Kennedy or President Johnson SHOULD have designated Dana Point as a National Historic Site / Park / Landmark
Thanks for posting! Very special footage. Interesting to note everyone's feelings about the harbor... Some mourn the loss of the surf break, others the loss of a marine habitat. In the end we got something precious as well, the harbor. Myself, I can't really say if it's better or worse than before, just different. There's a life lesson in there somewhere.
They could have built the harbor, anywhere but there. They destroyed one of the best surf spots in the region. And if you look at pictures from the early 1900's, it was a beautiful, natural cove. The water was clean and blue.... What the hell were they thinking?
So...this must be a sort of HORROR film for you and your Dana Point Mafia brothers. I empathize. I view it all the way from Jacksonville Florida as such. I feel pain watching these films. Nostalgic and beautiful yet emotionally saddened knowing some of the history of this area. You...were part of the healthier culture...the surf culture. It is somewhat pleasurable to just imagine that time and that culture.
Watching this makes me sad. This was all taken when everything was brand new and all the buildings were brand new. Now they want to tear them all down and build this “new” harbor which is going to be a fucking mall rather then a harbor with those ugly ass modern buildings that don’t even fit in an ocean environment, and then on top of that a parking deck, and all of this will attach so many people beyond Dana Points capacity, and likely to back up even all the way down to Del Obispo into San Juan Capistrano. Why is it so hard to just leave the existing buildings in place and just renovate them if necessary? They have already cut all sorts of those big beautiful trees down that were off of Dana Point Harbor Drive and Golden Lantern last year around November in preparation for that big ass parking deck. Corrupt ass Orange County is going to destroy our precious harbor and build a mall, when all they could’ve done is renovated the existing buildings instead if needed. The Harbor is NOT a mall, it has always been from the start a small boat harbor with a few small shops and restaurants. This is NOT a tourist attraction and or Newport Beach or Santa Monica.
Well said!!! There aren't many small harbors like DP anymore, and I think when most people come down they are coming specifically for that small harbor feel. No one wants an ultra modern place anymore... It's not special... They want something small, nice, and unique!!! I think it is perfect just the way it is!!! I love my harbor!!!
@@Parkerminami Yes they did... I wasn't alive back then though, although sometimes I do wish they never built the harbor. However, the harbor is pretty great but it should stay small the way it is right now.

Wow, when I recognized the walkways I walk on endlessly now, I started to tear up. How cool this video was!

I surfed Killer Dana in the 60's before the harbor was built. Sad to see a classic So Cal surf spot removed. RIP

So very sad
For the pre Dana Point Harbour cultural folks...this must be like a horror film.
