I was a longtime contributor to the Cousteau Society, and proud of it. I used to fight fires up in Alaska in the late 60's and was living in Anchorage when Calypso visited to re-supply for a trip into northern waters for a film they were making. I happened to take a walk down to the dock area on a day off and there was the Calypso and all her crew, wearing their red knit caps. I happened to be standing near a bollard when the ship was due to cast off and I slacked the line and threw it to the deck hand on Calypso and Captain Cousteau was there and waved to me in thanks.

I'm hearing John Denver's Calypso I had to post it here. He captures the Joy we all felt as children watching the adventures of this great ship and crew. "To sail on a dream on a crystal clear Ocean, to ride on the crest of a wild raging storm. To work in the service of life and the living, in search of the answers to questions unknown. to be a part of the movement and part of the growing, part of beginning to understand. Aye Calypso, the place's you've been to, the things that you've shown us, the stories you tell. Aye Calypso, I sing to your spirit, the men who have served you so long and so well. "..... Thanks so much to all for preserving this history. Much Love.

There is such a bittersweet note to this restoration. To see her (Calypso) rusting and deteriorating pulls at the hearts of those who grew up joining Costeau's expeditions from our livingrooms. Many of us got teary-eyed when the late John Denver wrote and produced his song "Calypso". She was meant to "teach" not to sit and die with the past. I hope she will continue on her voyages teaching a new generation about oceans and conservation. In the words of John Denver...
"Aye Calypso the places you've been to
The things that you've shown us
    The stories you tell
Aye Calypso, I sing to your spirit
The men who have served you so long and so well"

Charles Darwin discovered a lot but Cousteau should have world recognition as well, he give us so much and only add a Howard N. Potts medal in 1970 and a Catalonia international award in 1991, this to a man that was so much more, and Calypso should be recognised by UNESCO as world heritage.
Titanic is world heritage and we can't visit.

How frail all things are in the hands of time, Calypso and her crew friends to us all as children our telivised classroom to the sea a sad sight indeed, hopefully this grand lady of the sea will become again the symbol of all thing wild and free.

The wonderful sailor Jacques Cousteau visited Iraq and filmed a famous trip from there across the Arabian Gulf, then arrived at the Bab al-Mandab Strait and burned his ship in protest against the presence of warships for the major warring countries there .... Do you have a video of that incident, kindly?

Я и не знал,что многие сюжеты из ,,Одиссеи Жака Ив Кусто,, были сняты еще в 1950 годах,.Конечно ,,Калипсо,, надо реставрировать, ведь этот корабль легендарный

As of 2014, she HAS NOT been restored, she is hold up on a barge due to non payment of bills, with barely 30% of the work done. Unless the french government takes over and funds it, Calypso will continue to rot away..

That poor boat. She has been neglected for so long. Hopefully when she is restored she will be better than she has been in decades.

Esse barco é um patrimônio científico e cultural da França, é triste saber que não cuidaram dele como deveriam.
