With the costs of this hobby skyrocketing, these are the tricks that need sharing 👍
I make my washes out of Testors paints thinned with a bit of windshield washer fluid. Might take one or two applications but it does the trick. The weathering powders, I steal my fiance's make up.

I totally approve what you are presenting ! I recently bought a humbrol wash to always have some on hand, but it turns out that it's a big shit. It coagulates and forms clumps. I'm like you, I bought a palette of oil paints that I dilute with essence F (mineral gazoline). In addition, this allows you to have a wide palette of colors at a lower cost. I've been using my home made oil wash fir years, just buy tube oil paint from the art department of hobby lobby or Michael's. The hobby is expensive enough as it is without wasting money.

Richie I do the same thing but with water colors tube paste.i do my painting in enamels so like you use the oils for aycilics well the reverse of oils.i can get a box of 8 colors for 3 dollars US and last for a long time.with all of these hobby companies popping up ,there prices are getting beyond reach of normal modeler.

Is it possible to use white spirit instead of enamle thinner? I can get a big bottle for very little money at the pound shop.

I haven’t used W&N. But think they are comparable quality. W&N will be more art colors and Abteilung more model related colors may be??

I use both and the big difference is that the WN have alot more linseed oil and really need to be put on a scrap of card board to soak up the extra oil before using. Also some of the lower grades of WN can be pretty grainy. I think that with the fine pigments and far less oil the Abteilung paints are a pretty god bargain. JMHO.

Hi, aren’t the AK washes made from diluted enamels not oils? I agree though re price and durability of them in the bottle….and often use oils as my primary washes! Cheers.

Enamel paint is oil based.

I prefer to just use the Florymodels Clay Washes. Then if I mess it up, I can just wash it all off with water and start again.

I use Flory for panel line wash and oils for gear, engines etc. oil washes wipes right off with a drop of enamel thinner. Take a good 24 hours to dry so plenty of time to work with it.
