You have two phenomenal drummers here to listen to and admire. This is not a drum battle or a drum contest. Who is better or who has the fastest hands. No super bowl stats or who has the best defense or best offense. That is kid stuff comparing. Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich had mutual respect for each other. The both drummers are having fun drumming and exchanging their individual styles and interpretation. Both Buddy and gene did something on that Sammy Davis show. True musicianship and above all respecting the other man. That's what true music is all about
Ray Szymarek Yeah, maybe, but you just have the feeling, looking at Buddy, that he always wanted to crush whatever other drummer he was playing with or against. He was an alpha, caged fury, pure energy and violence. Oh, and rhythm too! Hahaha! Just a feeling...
As much as I love Buddy, I can't say how much I love Gene for the FUN he seems to have during his solo! Two great legends. Thank god this video is on RUclips
Buddy was the more technically proficient drummer, but you have to give them both props. Gene Krupa practically invented the drum solo, and inspired a whole generation of kids to want to play drums. Buddy Rich came along and took it to another level. The same could be said in the 70's about Carl Palmer and Neil Peart. Neil ultimately demonstrated greater chops, but there might not even be a Neil Peart if it wasn't for Carl Palmer and his showmanship. They all deserve credit in their own way.
Yeah, Neil's biggest influences are Bonham and Moon, but he mentions in the Rush documentary that he wanted to play drums because he saw the Gene Krupa Story movie. Of course Neil loves Buddy Rich as well, if I'm not mistaken, he produced the Burning for Buddy tribute albums. Carl Palmer is more of a Neil Peart contemporary in my opinion even though ELP were an influence on Rush much like King Crimson were. But yeah, all of the drummers mentioned are great in different ways and all brilliant musicians.
you cant compare carl palmer to peart carl palmer is so superor. Peart has no chops compared to him Neil is clown and shouldnt be mentioned in this conversation . Why do people adore this clown he does same shit over and over has no sinbgle stroke or double stroke or groove , a shit excuse for a drummer
I met the great Gene Krupa several times in my younger days. He really influenced my style of drumming throughout my life. I am now 67 and still playing in Big Bands. I have posted my tribute to Gene Krupa on the Gene Krupa Drum Solo Page. It is listed under "Bob Pettinicchi Tribute to Gene Krupa" Hope you enjoy my tribute to a legend, a great drummer and a true gentleman !! Thanks.
As a professional Drummer myself, I can remember playing and studying Gene Krupa's Leave Us Leap and Dark Eyes note for note and also listening intently to some of the licks that Buddy used to do and put them into my own playing. These two are two of the greatest drummers who ever lived
There would be no modern drumming, no rock drumming without Krupa.. Rich was an absolute monster of the drums who owed a huge debt to Krupa who blazed the trail.. You can see the mutual respect of these 2 titans.. More a celebration than a battle.. Krupa was much older and not as fast, but creative and groovin' as hell..You can sense the joy they both experienced..
Gene was the master, Buddy may have been technically superior but look back at Gene's career, worshipped in Benny's band, idolised in his own band, [the only problem with a drummer leading his own band is that the fans expect a solo on every number], led a smaller band until finally dying of luekemia, as Benny once said, 'Gene was the greatest ever', 'nuff said.
It's Krupa all the way! These are two awesome, incredible drummers, but Krupa just erupted with every part of his body when he played, plus he fathered those drums! As a musician myself, though not drums, Krupa WAS the drums to me. Thanks for this great clip.
Love em both, but Gene is still my favorite, even when he was older here he still kicked ass. Rich was fast, really fast, but not much other than that. Theres something to love in both styles from the two kings of swing!
Two of the very best EVER. There are very few percussionists that have had more influence on drumming as a whole than these two "Grand Masters." If we could be so fortunate to spend one afternoon with these two.
+J bLACK Now you've got me. Buddy Rich has dazzling technique, but he tends to sound rather mechanical. Gene Krupa, on the other hand, has more passion and feeling. He can make the drum "sing". It is quite hard to explain, and please remember it is just my opinion.
Gene Krupa was not only a phenomenal drummer, he prompted Slingerland to develop toms with tunable top/bottom heads, which became standard parts of a drum kit. His collaboration with Armand Zildjian led to the development of the modern hi-hat stand, as well as to standardized names and applications for the ride, crash, splash, pang, and swish cymbals. Krupa was not just an amazing drummer--his innovation paved the road for every drummer that came after him.
I met Buddy Rich backstage at a performance in the early '80s and he was the coolest cat on the planet. I was a young teen then, a budding drummer, and always remember he told me "Kid, never try to cram a sixteen bar solo into eight bars. Always save a little something back for the next one." Always found it to be excellent advice whether I was playing jazz, rock, or country. Sometimes less is more.
They don't battle each other but tap the skins each, to their own beat. The ''battle'' is just the bait. They are both great on their own. And, yeah, it is Mr. Bogangles himself, Sammy Davis Jr giving his shoes to both.
At about 1:17 in, look at the smile on Buddy's face. There is a guy who appreciated the talent of others. In 25 year of playing bass, I'm grateful that, with very few exceptions, the musicians I've played with had the same capacity, both in talent and the appreciation of it.
I remember reading that Buddy always toned down his performances when he battled with Gene Krupa because he didn't want to overshadow his friend. Remember, Krupa said at Buddy's funeral that he was "the best drummer who ever drew breath." That's good enough for me. Buddy was the best. And I haven't heard anyone else to top him since.
I'm a percussionist in a community band, big whoop, and at a rehearsal once a tuba playing band director tried to correct my traditional grip... I told him that if Gene Krupa could do it, so could I,,, he said,,, "Who is Gene Krupa?" I swear all the old lady clarinet players wanted to deck him. You could hear the outrage in their tidy upper woodwind intake of breath... at 2:20 blow my mind!!!
Music is not, and should not be a competition......... It's an ART: an individual creation no points awarded, no winner or loser. It's style........ one likes one type, another another style, be objective 'cause it's subjective..... IF you're honest😉 Gene, it could be argued, was the first with individual solo popularity, but Buddy Rich would have happened anyway. Watch in awe, they're playing together and be blown away somtime during your amazement and be thankful you were blessed! 👍🤝👏🤔😯😲😅❤🥁🎶🎵💎
Buddy Rich is more technically inclined than Gene Krupa; Buddy is the better player as far as technique is concerned. I just think Gene Krupa knows what sounds good; he's better at pleasing the crowd. It's the difference between John Coltrain and Kenny G. People will buy the hell out of anything Kenny G puts out (not saying John Coltrain doesn't sell), but John Coltrain would rip Kenny in a improvisation session.
Honestly I'm not a drummer or play any instruments but I just happened to come across this and I really enjoy watching Buddy play. I've watched some of his other videos and he's awesome to say the least!
Sammy is sitting there loving this - and he was no mean drummer himself!! But when Buddy appeared on stage his devastating technique and natural ability made sure he was the one who owned it!!
+eric toth supposedly, Rich had the rep for being and egotistical jack ass to some folks. Band mates, roadies, and othews but what big time star isn't?
Rich may be a better technical drummer, but Krupa had a better swing. I don't feel like dancing when I hear Buddy Rich drum. But Krupa or Cozy Cole? My ass can't sit still.
Exactly. Drum battles aren't supposed to be enjoyable. You sit down, shut up, watch the drummer plod along for twenty minutes, and thank him for being so awesome. Fucking idiots thinking music is supposed to be fun. Who the fuck listens for any reason other than to marvel at the musicians technical prowess?
The dude with the BR on his drum schooled the dude with GK on his drum. u could see BR laughing when GK was playing his solo. he was like. seriously bro.
Ned Martin from the "Hawaiian Review" out of Cesar's Palace in Atlantic City, NJ has his own band and he was one hell of a drummer; back in 1964 to 1984!
No disrespect at all to Gene Krupa, but this is a mismatch here. Gene is a bit past his prime and seems a bit slow and sloppy. Sometimes people mistake lack of speed for "savoring" your instrument, but that is often not the case. Buddy was just incredible and took it to a whole new level
Real drummers, using the traditional grip, which as Buddy says you cannot play a drum roll without using the traditional grip, this from a guy who plays a one handed drum roll, many have tried, none have succeded.
MarkR11957 - I haven't seen negative comments about Buddy, but your response is right on! My favorite drummer has always been Shelly Manne, but Buddy and Gene are in a class by themselves! Two of the greatest drummers that ever lived!
the two best drummers in one (very old) clip is just a charm. today its all about competition. here it was playing together. i still like together more then against...
YES! I wish I could bump this post up. I'm sure that Rich himself was inspired by Krupa. I really love and enjoy both. Rich had amazing patterns, Krupa had that drive and made it look fun while doing it.
saw buddy rich at a jazz festival years ago. before the show he was warming up in his bus with a set of nun-chucks or whatever you call them. pretty lucky to have seen that guy at all. wish I could have appreciated him more then....
Wow! Got my pulse going, palms sweating. Very interesting contrast in styles - GK using space more, less technical, and BR his usual bundle of perpetual motion. The fact that they often call these "drum battles" seems a misnomer; it looks more like two guys who love what they do and having one hell of a lot of fun (look at how much they're smiling.) Had the chance to see Buddy on several occasions, and it was always thrilling. Just wish sound recording tech was back then what it is today.
In THIS session I would agree...again, different talents. Krupa no doubt inspired Rich...and from the looks of this..Krupa fully appreciated RIch's gift in return. Bless them both!
Stop arguing who's better than who. Seriously. Gene INVENTED the drum solo. Gene is the giant who Buddy stood on. Buddy had a technique that goes unmatched even to this day. They're both giants of jazz and both deserve respect, just like they respected each other. Both of them did more for the drum set than many other drummers can say, so arguing who's better than who is pointless.
Sammy Davis, Jr. knew who to go party with after the show...........Krupa had already been a 'rock star' for damn near 30 years. He was the innovator that laid the groundwork for so many after him. Plus he rocked the Slingerlands!!!
Playing drum is not a competion. Its a passion, its in your soul. Drum players know that, its not about who's the best and who's the faster or whatever. Its about feeling it, its about having a good f***ing time hitting those toms.
Well and you've about to withess the most famous drum battle that had ever been performed and filmed. And I say this with all respect for all the other great awsome timekeepers who came along after this early 60's battle was fought.
You know who won this battle? The viewers, friend. The viewers.
That sounds like something Peter Griffin would say, and he would be correct.
No it was Gene. The tiny symbol gave it that extra push
Very nice comment, Fabulous Drummers and so much mutual respect. Great thank you.
Ray Szymarek perfectly said.
Hi Ray, Wonderful post!
And to think they played this wearing ties and suits!
Brilliant, both of 'em.
As much as I love Buddy, I can't say how much I love Gene for the FUN he seems to have during his solo! Two great legends. Thank god this video is on RUclips

Simply amazing. Two of the greatest drummers ever with Sammy Davis Jr. looking amazed in the background. Priceless.
Davis was no mean drummer himself...
Sammy rocked the skins too!
"Discipline?, we can't do that man! That's like telling Gene Krupa not to go boom boom bam bam bam"
buddy has unbeatable rolls and gene has an awesome expresion on drums like no other.. the best drummer ever
gene krupa for me i find it amazing that we can watch these all time greats on you tube amazing drummers both of them
Knowing that these guys were great friends and each other's favorite drummer makes this video even greater.
I met the great Gene Krupa several times in my younger days. He really influenced my style of drumming throughout my life. I am now 67 and still playing in Big Bands. my sentiments exactly tommy!
Thanks guys.
i agree!
It's Krupa all the way! These are two awesome, incredible drummers, but Krupa just erupted with every part of his body when he played, plus he fathered those drums! As a musician myself, though not drums, Krupa WAS the drums to me. Thanks for this great clip.

Pure dedication to the art that is drumming. These guys devoted their lives to this art. It’s an honour to be watching this talent 🤌
Damn! These two were the greatest drummers of all time!
Two of the very best EVER. There are very few percussionists that have had more influence on drumming as a whole than these two "Grand Masters." If we could be so fortunate to spend one afternoon with these two.
Ce sont les deux meilleurs. Point.
Buddy Rich sounds like a machine, Gene Krupa like a musician.
+p123 Please define that remark for me?
+J bLACK
Now you've got me. Buddy Rich has dazzling technique, but he tends to sound rather mechanical. Gene Krupa, on the other hand, has more passion and feeling. He can make the drum "sing". It is quite hard to explain, and please remember it is just my opinion.
p123
buddy rich is the link to modern rock drummers. they dont use the snare as foundation anymore like buddy, but rich was mr. tomtom #1.
Buddy does not sound mechanical at all.
That's funny considering my favorite Buddy Rich tune is Machine
Buddy's single strokes are insane!!! He has his roll at full speed at a dynamic of PPP. Amazing!
Magical. x. No one can deny that these two guys are the best drummers that ever lived.
Baker was off the charts. Krupa and Rich were his idols. Love it!
who gives a shit about who do what better .watch , listen and enjoy two of the greatest .
I met Buddy Rich backstage at a performance in the early '80s and he was the coolest cat on the planet. Great advice from the master!
I wish music nowadays had more displays of skill like this.
Gene was indeed one of the greats, but Buddy was clearly something special.I believe that's illustrated here.
They don't battle each other but tap the skins each, to their own beat. The ''battle'' is just the bait. They are both great on their own. And, yeah, it is Mr. Bogangles himself, Sammy Davis Jr giving his shoes to both.

Precisely. And Buddy's is superior. Go Buddy!!!!
Okay!
Buddy Krupa ftw!
I remember reading that Buddy always toned down his performances when he battled with Gene Krupa because he didn't want to overshadow his friend.
Remember, Krupa said at Buddy's funeral that he was "the best drummer who ever drew breath."
That's good enough for me. Buddy was the best. And I haven't heard anyone else to top him since.
Sure, only Krupa died 14yrs before buddy! Ooooops!
Imagina que épico foi ver essas duas lendas juntas 😍😍
I'm a percussionist in a community band, big whoop, and at a rehearsal once a tuba playing band director tried to correct my traditional grip... I told him that if Gene Krupa could do it, so could I,,, he said,,, "Who is Gene Krupa?" I swear all the old lady clarinet players wanted to deck him. i need a drum set, NOW

Daniel Johnson Coltrane
Honestly I'm not a drummer or play any instruments but I just happened to come across this and I really enjoy watching Buddy play. I've watched some of his other videos and he's awesome to say the least!
King Gene, Prince Buddy
We could all learn something from these amazing old-time drummers! Truly amazing.
both buddy and gene were in the giant shadow of chick webb.
Sammy is sitting there loving this - and he was no mean drummer himself!! But when Buddy appeared on stage his devastating technique and natural ability made sure he was the one who owned it!!
Buddy instantly murdered him in seconds haha. Didn't even work up to it, came out the gates shitting on him.
Exactly. You can really see the respect they have for each other, it's fantastic.
Yeah, Rich is quicker, but Gene has charisma, something sadly lacking in Rich.
+Iva Biggun They both have charisma. They're very different drummers. But both are very inventive.
+eric toth supposedly, Rich had the rep for being and egotistical jack ass to some folks. Band mates, roadies, and othews but what big time star isn't?
+eric toth Well said
Two great drummers, but Gene Krupa has the feeling, you can feel the beat, he gets your feet stopping, Buddy Rich definitely has the speed.
Rich may be a better technical drummer, but Krupa had a better swing. I don't feel like dancing when I hear Buddy Rich drum. But Krupa or Cozy Cole? My ass can't sit still.
Who dances to a drum solo? The whole point of drum solo or battle is to show off skills and be better than the other guy...
Rock Hudson, damn you're a fucking buzz kill
i reallyyy hope this is just a troll comment
I didnt realize music was meant for dancing???...
Love the fact that buddy is just entranced by Genes playing, you can see how much Buddy looks up to him....
Sammy Davis Jr. slapped Buddy Rich's hand five, but he shook Gene Krupa's. That says something, damned if I know what.
Thanks for posting this.two of the greatest musicians.
That does it, I quit!
Don’t quit enjoy the experience of improving
I can't get enough of this drum solo!!!
Like comparing Astaire to Kelly
Orgasmic Gene Krupa !!!! A "battle" of amazing contemporaries. Gene A++++, Buddy A++++.
The dude with the BR on his drum schooled the dude with GK on his drum. u could see BR laughing when GK was playing his solo. he was like. seriously bro.
Agreed buddy rich demolished gene Krupa hands down
Ned Martin from the "Hawaiian Review" out of Cesar's Palace in Atlantic City, NJ has his own band and he was one hell of a drummer; back in 1964 to 1984!
As soon as rich started that single stroke roll it was over 🔥🔥
Not my tempo
This video is a perfect example of two great solos. Krupa the entertainer and Rich the technician.
Real drummers, using the traditional grip, which as Buddy says you cannot play a drum roll without using the traditional grip, this from a guy who plays a one handed drum roll, many have tried, none have succeded.
Buddy is just incredible. Makes my jaw drop every time I watch him play.
They both killed it. Its a draw.
Two kings.
I just love when Buddy Rich shows us “what it’s like!!!”😂
I think that guy in the end was Sammy Davis jr.
Would make sense, as it's the Sammy Davis Jr. show.
i feel so stupid
Don't, you were correct.
MarkR11957 - I haven't seen negative comments about Buddy, but your response is right on! My favorite drummer has always been Shelly Manne, but Buddy and Gene are in a class by themselves! Two of the greatest drummers that ever lived!
Not quite my tempo.
HAHAHA
i get chills every time i watch this. just incredible
this is the greatest drummer who ever lived, on stage with HIS hero! great clip!
You hit the nail right on the head billddrummer. Buddy was the best and will never be topped in my estimation.
the two best drummers in one (very old) clip is just a charm.
today its all about competition. here it was playing together. i still like together more then against...
YES! I wish I could bump this post up. I'm sure that Rich himself was inspired by Krupa. I really love and enjoy both. Rich had amazing patterns, Krupa had that drive and made it look fun while doing it.
Buddy was faster for sure
saw buddy rich at a jazz festival years ago. before the show he was warming up in his bus with a set of nun-chucks or whatever you call them. pretty lucky to have seen that guy at all. wish I could have appreciated him more then....
Being a drummer, I have no clue how these guys can get behind a drum kit in a suit & tie and tear it up!!!
Fantastic...Never be another GENE....!!!!!
Love it
WoW,… Gene & Buddy are “Bad to the Bone “ ,…with the drums 🥁
༼☯﹏☯༽👍❣️💞💜💖
Two of the best ever to sit behind a kit
BEST POST ON HERE. Well SAID. I would say that they each had their own style, and phenomenal gift....and appreciated it in each other.
My ears were in heaven for the entirety of this clip. Thank you for uploading it :)
Gene krupa and buddy rich are a joy to hear and watch.so happy with thier talent.boom boom.
Rich had the speed and tenacity and Krupa had the "jungle beat"... both amazing
These guys are something else.... all that speed and never once dropping a stick or hitting a rim.
THANK YOU SOOOOO VERY MUCH FOR POSTING THIS VIDEO!!! Both Krupa and Rich are my favorite drummers. This was simply AWESOME!!!!
In THIS session I would agree...again, different talents. Krupa no doubt inspired Rich...and from the looks of this..Krupa fully appreciated RIch's gift in return. Bless them both!
Sammy davis looked like he was amazed by what he was seeing here and so are we. Incredible !!!
How lucky are drummers that followed them, to have two greats to learn from.
The two greatest drummers of all time!!
Stop arguing who's better than who. Seriously. Gene INVENTED the drum solo. Gene is the giant who Buddy stood on. Buddy had a technique that goes unmatched even to this day. Staggering! Come on you modern guys, i dare you to try and get close to the 2 ultimate masters. Mind blowing stuff.
EPIC!! Legends in music, hell in entertainment!
Can anyone name a drummer as good as either of these guys playing to day? These two are just....brilliant.
the3machin3 Carl palmer
It's cool to see the old Western handgrip, it was phased out by the mid 80's when I learned from my marching band percussionist.
This is without a doubt the greatest collection of win in one video on RUclips. This shit restored my faith in humanity.
Obviously they are having fun - and so do we. Thank God for such moments!
First concert I saw was Buddy Rich opening for Maynard Ferguson in 1985 in Madison, WI. Wow- what a show!
That was ALL respect and love between those two.
