Hold on… sorry to bring drum corps to set drumming, but it just hit me: Blue Devils 2017 Metamorph snare intro is directly copied from Gadd’s solo. That’s so crazy. I keep forgetting how many random allusions are made in DCI.
Dude, no. The better you get as a drummer, the more you realize how far beyond Vinnie is from the other 2. It's not just speed.. it's how he is making music from his patterns. His flair is beyond what most drummers can dream of.
Ever seen the recent King Crimson 3 drummer gigs - that sound guy gets a gold star. Different venue every night, 3 drummers in front of a rock band - superb.
I'm listening on my KRK R 10's awesome sound guy yes 100% The panning is amazing. Gadd comes in like tribal warriors with AK 47s, shot guns, rocket launchers.
Gadd's intro is simply breathtaking. It is *everything* about musicality in drumming. Weckl and Colauita blaze you with chops. Gadd blows your mind with feel (and chops).
In the end: Vinnie’s mullet is shiny and luscious; the ends of his locks flow outwards in a controlled, rippling wave that is reminiscent of the slightest wind travelling over a small, moonlit bay. Dave’s mullet has such elegance and volume; his curls evoke the sudden explosion of flowers across a spring meadow peppered in morning dew. Like the bay, and the meadow: both occupy their own unique place and purpose in the ecosystem that is life/drumming.
*Expletive* I've been watching this video on and off for years, as well as listening to their individual work. Here's my totally subjective take: - Gadd is more comfortable with space in his solos, his rudiment skill is second to no one, and he has more subtlety that the other two. He seems more relaxed. Seems to be the most likely to be a team player. I would hire him over the other two for a session without hesitation. It's almost as if he was content to let the other two shine by going in more of a march-like feel, which ironically made him stand out the most. - Weckl has tremendous metronomic accuracy in his solos, and probably the best dynamic control. His solos are always very comprehensible to laymen like me, in spite of being almost impossible to duplicate. He probably has the most flash of the three... the most "bling," to use a subjective term. This is also a function of his highly polished sound (in terms of drum and audio gear, as well as his drum tuning, to say nothing of his technique) which is probably the most identifiable, and perhaps most influential studio drum sound in the world. - Colauita's brain is just wired differently than anybody else's. Stories of his virtuosity in recording sessions, and his relentless dedication to improvement are the stuff of legend. And it shows. His playing reminds me of the "sheets of sound" adjective used to describe saxophonist John Coltrane. Clearly he got bored with delineating measures with the consistency that the other two seem comfortable with. His playing is the most "organic" and "raw" of the three. Where the other two seem to be more interested in variations on a theme, Vinnie is almost always looking for new themes, and I find it really interesting to see where he goes. What I would find interesting is a challenge where one tries to imitate the style of the other two. I think, in that regard, Vinnie would come out on top, being able to play like the other two. Weckl could probably only convincingly reproduce Gadd's style. And Gadd is best at being himself. All this being said, I still can't say that one of them is the overall better drummer than the other two. It just goes to show you that there is always room at the top.
+ccmdav Hey,man,do you know what?I think I really agree with you.I liked your analysis, the way you dissected every single drummer's style and approach to the instrument. What you say is basically what I think of them.I give you a thumb up!
+ccmdav I've also been watching this myself since my drum teacher gave me a pirate video of the performance I think in '89. Your breakdown makes perfect sense. Gadd is a minimalist groove maker. Gadd is a flashy, polished metronome. Vinnie is a noisy, irreverent wild card. All are amazing in their own way and I think any young drummer should study this (intense) era of studio session drummers.
What I love about Steve Gadd is that he isn't afraid to leave space. There are one or two of his solos where he absolutely chops out to the level of his contemporaries just so say "I can do it too" but then he just sits back into his own groove and enjoys himself, playing what he wants and feels, letting Weckl and Colaiuta have all the flashy single stroke solos. Gadd just sits back and keeps it solid and grounded. Absolute legend
I’ve watched this at least 25 times over the years. I always wanna come out feelin Vinnie … but it’s GADD who ends up takin my breath away. 😮💨 He just gets his whole _body_ & soul into it-all feel, not chops-display.
I never try to compare musicians because we are all unique, and interpret things differently. There is no contest for me. However I still remain partial to Steve's performance. That guy could lock a groove in with uncooked hotdogs and a garbage can lid. A truly spectacular musician!
Same. I recently had a convo of if you could pick just one drummer to join your band, who would it be? My answer was Gadd. He's as good as it gets and just knows how to sit in that pocket and make the most of the song. Love him.
So the scenario is this Dave...you will be jamming with Vinnie and Steve...you start. I mean he could have chosen to mind melt us all with a tom blitz, but instead he gives us such a graceful cymbal-led open...gold!
With so many drummers around; I don’t think there could be any one ‘best’ drummer and it’s a hard question to answer yes as you say subjective! From a pure genius perspective to me , Buddy Rich did some of the most awesome drumming ever, I can attest even more seeing him live in 1980! Just phenomenal
Its like comparing cars.. These guys are somewhat in the rolls royce class and travis barker is a Cadillac hot rod, Mat sorum is a dump truck, Joey Jordison a 1998 jeep cherokee v8 with no muffler and Lars Ulric is a banana.. Me, im a vas lada...
This is the only piece of music that doesn't need more cowbell. Been watching this video for years, don't think I'll ever get tired of watching 3 masters come together and just have fun playing their instruments.
11 years later, this is still my favourite drum material to look up. It never gets old!! The lessons are still relevant today as they were back then! Classic!!
That’s definitely Gadd keeping the main Latin cowbell pulse. No foot cowbell - it’s his right hand and left foot doing the work on the pulse. Notice when he does his solos the cowbell drops and there’s another cowbell sounding pulse instead which I think is Weckl. I’ve watching this video like a billion times picking it apart.
Always come back to this and send it to my students. Dave Weckl is a lifelong enduring inspiration for me and my generation (drummers born in 70s and 80s) so I am always partial to his solos. As was said by others here, the dynamic control, accents, virtuosity, ambidexterity, hand and feet combos, etc. They are unmatched and each phrase is his and you know it when you hear it. As far as this solo goes though, Steve Gadd owns the musicality and great phrasing. All the drum hooks here are his. He is the most confident. The driving beat with the syncopation and hi hats in all the right places. The marching snare pattern is gorgeous and memorable. He has the least to prove and has the most grace and power in his stroke. We need another 3 part drum solo with up and coming contemporary drummers. A 2016 version.
moonpluto I wholeheartedly agree! Though, I’m not sure who, out of contemporary drummers, embodies Dave Weckl. Benny Greb is the contemporary king of groove, and someone like Matt Garstka could fill the shoes of Vinnie (both think in out of this world processes- there’s a video of Matt Garstka explaining displacements by odd groupings like septuplets, I highly recommend looking it up). Need one more for it to be complete
Gadd and Weckl are both playing at a virtuoso level no doubt, but I can still mostly understand what they're doing. I can't even wrap my head around Vinnie Colaiuta's parts though... he's just from a different planet.
My second cousin and Vinnie went to school together. They both came up together drumming and remained friends throughout the years. Vinnie went on to have an amazing career and my cousin toured with a big band/jazz band called The Letterman for about 30 years. A lot of the big names in drumming used the same studio out in Cali to record. According to my cousin, his band, Vinnie, and Terry Bozzio were all in the studio recording various projects. My cousin's band is done for the day and he's hanging out with Terry. Anyone who knows drumming knows Terry is often considered to be one of the best drummers around. Terry is trying to sight read this song and is really struggling to find the groove. As he is taking a breather, Vinnie walks in with a sandwich to see what the boys are up to. Terry hands him the sheet and Vinnie sits down and plays it one handed while holding a sandwich. Terry walked out of the room. So don't feel bad about having trouble following him. Even amongst the best, Vinnie is on another level.
Well, no. They're pretty specialised. I doubt any of them would be able to play in a band like Meshuggah, since the manner of playing is so very different.
Drum is an instrument which if you have as much experience playing as these 3 legends and you have mastered all the techniques, you can pretty much play anything as long as you can get in the mood. Jazz is a genre which requires the drummer to be versatile more than any other genre out there, no one can argue with that. I hope that answers your question.
Matt Fite Without a doubt I would second that. The group favours Vinnie and I have enough Frank Zappa to understand his genius but for me here and now and from a drummers point of view I am in complete awe of what Steve Gadd is playing as underneath all the chops there is more of a rhythm but any of these in isolation are supremely talented and no doubt about that. I need a cold shower after that.
I've watched this hundreds of times. I remember seeing this when it first happened. I was inspired and I also wanted to quit. It is the best multi-drumset performance EVER.
One thing that eluded me before is the way Steve Gadd's solo provides the perfect intro to the groove. It would have sounded so weird if they had gone from Weckl's relaxed cymbal intro or Vinnie's solo into the groove
I think I’ve watched this clip at least 50 times. Absolute legends, the lot of them. Colaiuta is totally outrageous, 😂 his speed and power are out of this world.
Weckl's intro is perfect. Gadd's intro is perfect and powerful with the most efficiency, Vinnie's efficiency with the amount of power and speed is incredible all the way through. And his solo at 6:08 is such a perfect phrase, it sounds like him, but directly inspired by Steve Gadd. This is the best drum exhibition ever recorded.
Everyone's talking about Gadd's snare drumming on top of the march but check out the bass drum kicks. Nice even single strokes and he supports the snare pattern like a real bass drum in a drumline. Amazing!
+SXI96 Agree 100%, I had a 6 piece hot red kit back in 86'. Hit them in the music store and it was the most amazing thing I ever heard. Went back the next day a bought them. Would have bought that kit for the kick drum sound alone.
Every time I need to remember why I chose to be a professional drummer, I always watch this video and each time I come Back here, my 15 years Old teenager inner self reappears with the same emotion and fascination of the first time I saw this 🙂🥁
Goosebumps just hearing these three introduced at the same time. The amount of awesome packed onto one stage! I grew up watching this VHS and it made want to learn drums. 33 years later, I’m about 20% there.
...one of the best drum "ensembles" of all time !!....three of the best, not "battling",but, COMBINING their immense skill into a performance that ole Buddy would have loved......AND he wouldn't have to yell : "CLAMS !!....CLAMS!!!.....ALL I HEAR IS CLAMS !! " either !!!!...
I saw Chick Corea when I was young, with Dave Weckle at a time when I thought Neal Peart was the greatest drummer. That show changed my life. I knew then and there I witnessed greatness.I was stunned, shocked, and amazed. I never knew drums could sound like that. And my bar got higher.
Don't know how many times I've seen this video, everytime I almost starts to cry of pure happiness!... So fucking out of this world... what a BIG fucking solo!! And Dave's snare sound cuts sharper than a fkn samurai sword!
It's like the heart didn't come into this until Steve laid it DOWN!! Im watching the other 2 before and after Steve's crazy army sweetness, and it brought the three of them into another place. Flow!! I'm feeling it as I watch. Props to all 3 masters!
Joseph Simon the fills you pointed out are mostly single strokes between the hands and feet, as well as double strokes with one hand and one foot, impressive nonetheless.
This video is the epitome of perfect drumming...you got it all:rudiments, technique, speed, control, rhytm, power, musicianship, showmanship. These 3 men are the Holy Grail of drumming, inspired by The Drumming God himself,Buddy Rich.Buddy would be proud of them!
Dave: What’s up, kiddos? Here’s my smooth-as-butta, technically brilliant, graceful and dynamic solo :) *plays it perfectly* Vinnie: Oh yeah, son? Lemme show you how it’s DONE...*proceeds to unleash some insanely technical chops with fire and brimstone-level energy and power* Steve: Settle down, children...lemme dial it way back, get that GROOVE going ;) *goes into Crazy Army* Vinnie and Dave: Yes, Master Gadd. OK. *both join in* Audience: OMFG
I feel like Weckl being the predecessor is the perfect portmanteau of Gadd and Colaiuta. Vinnie's hyper technical prowess coupled with Steve's ginormous pocket and backbeat. It's just an absolute joy to hear the 3 of them play together, especially at this point in their careers. A beautiful glimpse at past, present and future of the instrument by a collection of bona fide masters.
After the 3 play that roll at the end together...... I get goose bumps and my eyes get all watery... but seriously how do you pick a favourite from that ? in my opinion you just cant,
Gotta say, my fave is Gadd. He has an arsenal of style. Though, I've also gotta say he was somewhat shown up at this pass. His discipline was out shined by Weckl and Colaiuta's energies.
There not trying to out do any body just a compassion to show the audience how good they can compliment one another pure joy and respect for each other and the audience
Totally fine drummers all using English style grip rather than matched grip. Dave's single stroke rolls are incredible. I love all three drummers. The cadence of Vinnie is fantastic like a freight train coming.
He is the best drummer that has ever lived. Can't imagine marching snare without him. All other drummers are shit and Gadds solos are all so different aren't they? You fucking spastic.
I've been playing drums 25 years, not usually a big fan of solos. This is the absolute best drumming and solos and talent I have ever seen in my life, awesome!!!! NYG
I've watched this for years and have and will forever use this video as a benchmark for why Jazz drummers are just better at controlling a room. And that's what no other genre of drummer brings anymore.
I remember when I listened to Chick Corea's electrik band, someone had me guess the drummer. I said DENNIS CHAMBERS, and it was Steve Gadd. My opinion of Gadd changed forever from that moment on. Though now after 17 years of playing, I'm blown away by everything Gadd plays. It takes some time to "get" his style. All of that said, Vinnie C should be tried for murder after what he did in this video. Double homicide.
One of the GREATEST DRUM SOLOS YOU WILL EVER HEAR... Vinnie was on another planet..lol... PLEASE... put this in vault somewhere deep in the ground for the future generations to discover 1000 years from now...
Watching this in 2024 and still in awe
Me too.
Weckl is the brains, Vinnie is the muscle, Gadd is the heart. What a machine :)
Perfect description.
@@juresaiyan Yeah. Except for the muscle. Doesn’t really fit. But it sounds good
I'd say all three were all three
Vinnie is an Alien.
Well said

Gadd's groove makes my spine melt.
Gadd Gadd and more Gadd for me…!!
GADD IS SO EMOTIONAL ❤❤❤❤ HE PLAYS MORE GROOVY AND SIMPLE BUT HIS WHOLE LIFE IS ❤❤❤❤❤ENGAGED ! ! !
THis is it man !!!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Gadd's marching snare solo in the beginning gave me chills. Incredible.
Remember Steve was an Army Drummer
And the power his kicks bring in… almost three decades pass and still brings tears so my eyes and a HUUUGE smile on my face! 😃

@@gabrielbryson8854 Its a really old piece written sometime around the 1940's by a drummer named Ed Lemley...The piece is called Crazy Army
Weckl’s opening is like a sound poem. Colaiuta pulls off the sickest drum fill in recorded human history. Gadd can groove like no other.

Speed: Vinnie
Groove: Steve

YES! Those dynamics oh my God!
It is poetry :)

This is a video of how good I will never be on drums. Seriously, I think Weckl told the best story with his opening contribution.
I can't stop watching Steve's marching groove. Damn clean and powerful
when I watched this video for the first time 12 years ago, I thought Steve Gadd had it hands down. 12 years later I still think the same.
It's not fair , Steve was "Out-Mulleted"
He was ahead of his time.
Hahahah. Nice.
Love this comment
Gotta have lived in the 80s to know what that means.
His drumming for the band stuff is legendary.
This is the most memorable drum exhibition of all times!
Amazing!
I've been watching this video for 8 years now, and I will keep coming back to it for the rest of my living life.
Dave Weckl's drums sounded so much better back in the day, recording customs are amazing !
+SXI96 Agree 100%, I had a 6 piece hot red kit back in 86'. Hit them in the music store and it was the most amazing thing I ever heard. Went back the next day a bought them. Would have bought that kit for the kick drum sound alone.
Every time I need to remember why I chose to be a professional drummer, I always watch this video and each time I come Back here, my 15 years Old teenager inner self reappears with the same emotion and fascination of the first time I saw this 🙂🥁
Steve Gadd solo - Legend of the One-Eyed Sailor. Awesome stuff.
There's only about a hundred drummers that can keep up with Dave...He's a super drummer...Most of them are long gone...
Don't know how many times I've seen this video, everytime I almost starts to cry of pure happiness!... So fucking out of this world... what a BIG fucking solo!!
And Dave's snare sound cuts sharper than a fkn samurai sword!
This gave me goosebumps. Electric!!
This video, I just had an eargasm. I need a moment. ♥
this is the most incredible thing I've ever seen in my life
Passion = Dave
Grace = Steve
Fire = Vinnie
Not just for great guitar trifectas anymore!
It’s so good it actually brings me to tears sometimes.
If I had to sum up each player's style in one word...
Weckl: Finese
Colaiuta: Power
Gadd: Groove
I would say colaiuta is force
One of the greatest drum solo performances of all time.....truly amazing!
3:43 Gadd’s fill is sublime. Oh yes gimme all dat
They way he hits the drums and how his body moves.. the guy is the greatest
it is a very, very musical fill indeed
that Dave Weckl intro solo is one of the most amazing things ever played.
Amazing accents Dave gets with the traditional grip. AMAZING!
Dave, Steve and Vinnie are the gods of drums!! Amazing!!
love it
Who doesn't
The worlds most perfect drummer all in statement…brains, balls and class!
Why would you give this a thumbs down?
dave weckls hair.
Let's build a wall to protect us against that hair.
frankieknuckles82 They don't know what *art* is. 😌
Buddy Rich's ghost.
Lars, was that you?
It's like the heart didn't come into this until Steve laid it DOWN!! Im watching the other 2 before and after Steve's crazy army sweetness, and it brought the three of them into another place. Flow!! I'm feeling it as I watch. Props to all 3 masters!
I watch this often, specifically to see Steve Gadd go into "Crazy Army" - damn! Also Vinnie at around 4:25, and again at around 7:00 - wow.
+Joseph Simon Yeah... but as simple as it is, Steve at 3:44 is by far my favorite. Love this trio.
Joseph Simon the fills you pointed out are mostly single strokes between the hands and feet, as well as double strokes with one hand and one foot, impressive nonetheless.
Yeah it's way unbelievable and imagine...this is recorded andplayed back in 1989 ....
I watch it too and blow my beans because my life has no meaning
This video is the epitome of perfect drumming...you got it all:rudiments, technique, speed, control, rhytm, power, musicianship, showmanship. These 3 men are the Holy Grail of drumming, inspired by The Drumming God himself,Buddy Rich.Buddy would be proud of them!
Dave: What’s up, kiddos? Here’s my smooth-as-butta, technically brilliant, graceful and dynamic solo :) *plays it perfectly*
Vinnie: Oh yeah, son? Lemme show you how it’s DONE...*proceeds to unleash some insanely technical chops with fire and brimstone-level energy and power*
Steve: Settle down, children...lemme dial it way back, get that GROOVE going ;) *goes into Crazy Army*
Vinnie and Dave: Yes, Master Gadd. OK. *both join in*
Audience: OMFG
Ahmed El Assy Haha thanks.
I get goose bumps and my eyes get all watery... but seriously how do you pick a favourite from that ? in my opinion you just cant,
My favorite drum video for all Time
Gotta say, my fave is Gadd. He has an arsenal of style.
Though, I've also gotta say he was somewhat shown up at this pass. His discipline was out shined by Weckl and Colaiuta's energies.
It's all about balance. Three divas on one stage is too much. Somebody had to take the high road.
There not trying to out do any body just a compassion to show the audience how good they can compliment one another pure joy and respect for each other and the audience
I always come back and watch this video from time to time. Such greatness and masters of their craft.
Totally fine drummers all using English style grip rather than matched grip.
Dave's single stroke rolls are incredible. I love all three drummers. The cadence of Vinnie is fantastic like a freight train coming.
Weckl's amazing ability to hear sounds has always impressed me
at 4:27 that lick Vinnie does just blows my mind
Then you should also watch Eric Moore and Jonathan Banks
@@da9elbP in 80s?
@@simonrobert9858 Doesn´t matter
Three different styles by three legendary drummers !!!!!
Unbelievable performance!!
Every drummer should watch this video religiously man its a masterclass
Gadd held the three of them together - He has the best groove of the 3
+Jack Ledsha Steve G. has more intelligent!
He is the best drummer that has ever lived. Can't imagine marching snare without him. All other drummers are shit and Gadds solos are all so different aren't they? You fucking spastic.
Nope, you're wrong. Opinion, not a fact, even though your opinion is flawed in a lot of regards anyway.
I've been playing drums 25 years, not usually a big fan of solos. This is the absolute best drumming and solos and talent I have ever seen in my life, awesome!!!! NYG
Stuff like this this should be a required vid in all school music classes.
It's really great to see Gadd hit the drums hard! Amazing drumming all the way around!
steve gads base drum sounds so amazing!
Gadds groove is the absolute people pleaser. Such nice beat!
Anyone else still watching this in 2019? Just saw this 3 times in a row.
I've watched this for years and have and will forever use this video as a benchmark for why Jazz drummers are just better at controlling a room. And that's what no other genre of drummer brings anymore.
when i was a kid, someone showed me this and said Gadd schooled his kids... I thought the opposite. 20 years later, nope, they were right
Moog Luva still a dumb shit then?
Mark Jones Stay classy kid
@@MarkJones-ji8fd lmao
Moog Luva same! ☝🏻
